ParticipantSpeaking of DT’s fall when he went over the shoulder of Phil Spence is something that is indelibly etched upon my brain. I was sitting in the first row of the end zone just a few feet from where it occurred and was able to to see him totally unconscious with his blood on his head and on the court. I truly thought that he had died that Saturday afternoon. The sound of skull on wood was damn near deafening and sickening at the same time.
They took him to Rex Hospital and he returned in the second half with his head heavily bandaged. It took 15 stitches to close the gash in his head. He got a standing ovation from the sold out crowd and there was not a dry eye in the house. The Pack went on to rout Pittsburgh 100-72 as Burleson played like a man possessed in the second half. (12 reb 26pts) Spence finished with 14 boards, 4 assists and 10 points.
The following Monday (3-18-74) in the Technician (I still have a copy) Sloan was quoted from his Sunday basketball show as saying: “I thought the near tragedy of what happened yesterday was the greatest display of love and affection for a group of people, for one individual, and concern for an individual I have ever seen in my life. I know the ball game and the season became totally meaningless to us and members of the squad when David had his accident.” Sloan claimed that even CBS News Director Walter Cronkite called Sunday to inquire about David’s health. What happened after that day, and for the remainder of the season, is also etched upon my brain and is arguably the greatest time in N.C. State athletics history.

Participantclarification, Chop…It was Haskins that missed two field goals, not the second year kicker, Bambard….Bambard was one for one…
Wolfanatic
ParticipantMaybe it’s my half-full attitude or distorted hopes, but I think Haskins will atone in a big way down the line…Hope is a good thing…..maybe the best of things…DD needs to get busy winning or get busy losing….

Participantmaybe it’s just my old ass and my failing eyesight but our uniforms numbers are hard to discern on tv unless the view is up close. Hard to tell 6s and 9s and 3s from 8s….not that it affects our play or anything.. With some new kids playing sometimes it’s hard to tell who is who.

ParticipantIndeed it is a great upload…Very well conceived by DD..thanks for posting that..

ParticipantCongrats Chickens!!!!!
A gut-wrenching bottom of the 9th…couldn’t help but think when they were one strike away that we were one strike away from sending them back to Conway… Good job Chickens!

ParticipantWell, of course I’m pulling for Coastal. Why wouldn’t or shouldn’t I? They were there in 2010. Current T.B. Rays player Taylor Motter was part of that squad…. From a Rays fan: watch them make Motter into another Zobrist. The kid is alright…

ParticipantI don’t disagree with you Pack 1997, but I recall back in 2010 when Clemmons fans were screaming for Dabo’s head. Cooler heads prevailed, obviously, and since then he’s 56-12, 4-1 in bowls and a final rank inside the top 25 each year. Now, that’s not to say DD will match that. Only time will tell. Mind you, not long after I graduated State (1976) I lived in Clemmons and their facilities back then were no better that ours..Questionable tactics by Charley Pell and Betty, I mean Danny Ford, helped to move their program ahead of ours, and give them some of that “tradition.” One never knows, DD may yet prove to be an elite coach. No one would have used those two words to refer to Dabo in 2010..

ParticipantRye…Just saw your post back on page 17 of this thread…It did finally post… Excellent post…nice pictures. Indeed, we are behind all of those schools despite the limited progress we have made. And thanks to CD for aiding my warped memory, which is more warped than I thought. Truthfully, I have not set foot in our yard since 1976. So many factors go into the decision of where you want to play ball if you’re wanted by numerous schools. When it comes to the yard, I can see some weighing that factor more heavily than others – as in a power hitting leftie would probably choose FSU with the short porch and high fence in right. Does it hurt our product? Maybe, but not significantly I believe.

ParticipantCatchers don’t get close to the outfield fence…..other than when they jack one…

ParticipantIt’s humorous to hear people talk about our facilities ranking near the bottom. I don’t know about the validity of that, but I admit I have seen much nicer facilities, and obviously, some that are worse. No, it’s humorous to me because when I think back to the Fall of 1972 and the Spring of 1973 the facility was completely different than it is today. A few, maybe three or four aluminum bleachers behind home and the first and third baselines – no real stands or seats – bleachers only – first come first serve, a chain link fence in the outfield with no covering, unprotected bullpens, no metal building by the Pack bullpen and the six to eight foot pine saplings in right field. Maybe time has warped my memory, but I think I’m fairly accurate. The point is, if you think our facilities are lacking now, you should have seen them then. It was little more than a high school field. Indeed, forty-four years later it doesn’t look so bad. Could it look better? I suppose. Would that help to improve the product? I can’t be sure, but I rather doubt it. I know, I’m old. Don’t get me talking about how when they emptied equipment bags onto the field to start practice, five or six no-break catchers mitts rolled out. Yogi would have loved it.

ParticipantNCSU 1987.. ok, got it..t’was a good bunt…I forget who our right-handed hitter was, but it was a hit and run, and he swung very late; and offered not much protection for the runner..which made the steal attempt appear to be a bad call.. You were talking about their bunt…my bad…
Wolfanatic
ParticipantNCSU 1987: Damn. That was a perfectly executed bunt. Damn. ……AIR, the attempted steal that cost us did not have a bunt. It was a delayed swing on a hit and run that cost us…
