*Edit – I mentioned Thunder Dan’s opinion but the relevance may not be clear. He’s currently on our Strength and Conditioning staff and obviously works with LB’s. So from working with him since Day 1 he is pretty excited about that kid.

Its a light weight dream come true watching him now. I used to tell him that he should pick us (starting in the 6th grade) not thinking the stars would ever align. Then I just did some where are they now research randomly and found out he did pick us and low and behold he’s still a stud.

carry on – I ramble when I get excited… and all other times too

    http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcwest/post/_/id/110198/wilson-and-glennons-life-changing-moment for the full article.

“But I didn’t think he would tell me not to come back,” Wilson said. “North Carolina State was an awesome experience for me. I graduated in three years and went to grad school. I wanted to finish my senior year [of football] there.”

“I tried to do everything right. I love NC State. It was just one of those things. Coach O’Brien wanted to move on. So I had to move on, too.”

I remember reading another article maybe on GoPack where Wilson was like, name Glennon the starter and plan as if not going to be at NC State. Just give me an opportunity to compete for the job. We all know how that convo ended. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

The sky isn’t falling and this signing period isn’t over yet. Our past has stung us all bad and I think that evidence is coming out on this board and Trevor Lacey’s twitter feed.

Gott hasn’t only offered 5* recruits this year. If you think that you really haven’t paid attention to our recruiting as the year has gone on. We just happened to have missed on a lot of kids. He even extended offers well into this basketball season and as the high school season ended. We just didn’t convert. Its not the end of the world yet.

Losing KW sucks. TL was one of the best players in the ACC so not having him sucks but guys people make the best decisions for their lives. Who knows how many guards are declaring next year?

I say this to say, due to consistency and playing together I had higher expectations with only one new key piece being added to the team. I hate relying on unknowns because they can turn out like Lacey did or like Rodney Purvis.

Now, we need to wait and see what Gott brings in over the next few weeks. Even if that turns out to be nothing. I have a hard time understanding the the extent of the pessimism here. Its like you guys want to forfeit the games before they are played and fire the coach before his next class arrives in ’16.

I’ll trust Gott until our performance on the court tells me we shouldn’t.

I’ve always liked Lou because he brought this calm swagger that was legitimized by his past accomplishments. Very unlike journalists like Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith would argue that their expertise is more relevant because they’ve written about it for longer. That always annoys me when a person with no expertise can legitimately undermine, question, and critique an expert on TV as if their opinion is equally as valid.

Even for a bonehead move like having RW pass the ball on the one with Beastmode, I’d rather hear Bill Cowher opine about the lunacy then a Stephen A or Skip. That being said Lou falls in the boat of Bill Cowher as someone whose commentary I really respected.

However, I always felt that for his quality of life he should retire and enjoy his family and let his family enjoy him. Lou is the man and I only wish he chose to go out on his own terms versus the “mutual agreement”.

Grey I thought we only lost one or two seniors last year on the O-Line. I know one was Rob Crisp and the other number 74, his mom came out to a came watch this past year. Very cool lady. They are both our tackles so that is a little bit concerning but I remember our lineman actually swapping pretty regularly last year so I have to believe our starters there have experience and are capable.

Our secondary… gives me nightmares / chills / stress induced hair loss and WR’s (yes a year more experienced, new talent coming in, red shirts actually playing) but they consistently were inconsistent minus Bo. So many drives stalled due to dropped passes that were on the money, or that one GA Tech interception and recovered fumble, that should have been a TD. Instead it indirectly led to a pick 6.

I trust DD don’t get me wrong, I’m a believer like most of you. Even despite the 3 win start I never lost faith because he has always found a way to be successful and winning with Mitchell as our qb would be a tall order for a Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, no less a DD.

Brissett is the real deal I just hope our WR’s and defense come to play. I think our O-Line depth is ok… but I could be overlooking transfers / booted off the team

I don’t know that much about MLB but with Strasburg and those other horses up in DC its hard not see this as an upgrade for Turner. The move sucks, not having any influence in critical decisions impacting your career SUCKS… but this may be a move for the best as long as is still on the field in DC

I share Tau’s belief in that with exception of TDT everyone Gott has brought in has developed, contributed, and helped make us better. I thought Gott would have given Des more playing time this year but he knows more than I.

If we didnt get a single player I’m ok with it because even next year we only lose Trevor Lacey (presumably) which gives us a senior laden team the following year while freshman get integrated into the offense and contribute in a major way as sophomores because of the expected departures.

I think we will be in the do or die position next year that some posters believe we are in this year. Now, obviously my risk tolerance is higher because NCSS obviously decimates this plan. Early draft enrollee, injury, or transfer will likely drop us out of contention.

after reading the article it was about as informative as a daily horoscope. I was hoping he talked with Doeren or another coach and got some insight into why past weaknesses or inconsistencies will be strengths. We know we responded well at the RB position but are there any surprise contributions coming in at WR / LB / CB or the DL?

wow… I’ve never been big into drugs but man I want some of what that guy is smoking. Not saying we are the SEC but I don’t how long before Beamer gets VT back on track, UL will no doubt better than they were last year and we know all to well what trips to Wake Forest are like.

Maybe this is a best case scenario projection not what he really thinks will happen. I think 8 or 9 wins in the regular season is reasonable and 10-2 if we are a special team again. Our WR core has me a little nervous but at RB we are deep as humanly possible.

I look forward to watching it all play out

Prowling Wolfie… I agree. I think that KW is what we want given he does let the shot selection get a little better. I’m ok with him taking those long jump shots though. He was our best 3 pt shooter on the team @ 54%.

What’s missing is he can’t truly play his game unfortunately without others establishing themselves in the low post. If Kennedy Meeks has to account for one of our bigs down low on the opposite side of the paint. KW shooting threat draws another big out of the lane.

Then you have Cat, Trevor Lacey, Twins, Terry Henderson now with room to do some things and much harder to double. I think the key to NC State accomplishing something special is Anya / Abu / Freeman getting on the low blow block getting points in the paint and drawing fouls. Then KW stretching the defense with the help of the twins all while our guards really start to have to have some fun and get some easier buckets.

I really like that depth across the board.

I’ll be a little anxious if Gott can’t convince some of these kids to hop on this train before it leaves the station though.

for those that say its hard to beat the same team twice we had to beat UVA twice in 83 to take down those nets. This year is starting to take on some strange similarities to that year minus a Whittenberg like injury.

I was a male greek at state and the penalty seems harsh (I’m biased). Were the guys wrong for making these comments yes. Should a punishment be forthcoming so that NC State is clear where it lies with regard to racism, sexual misconduct… etc – absolutely. Suspend them for a year, sentence the chapter to community service or something.

I feel like the action to disband the fraternity was akin to buying your kid a muscle car and selling it after the first ticket. Now, its probably a different story if this particular fraternity stayed under the watchful eye of Paul Cousins (dean of student conduct or something another) for multiple major infractions. This could be the nail in the coffin. A bit harsh for a group of 18-20 year old first time offenders

Mista Wolf I love the question. We all know that anything can happen on any given Friday so why not us. Sweet 16 given what we have and will have next year is extremely gratifying because of how we have finished the season. Regardless of whether that LSU bucket falls or rolls off the rim… we could tell we have a team working on having a program.

2 sweet 16’s in 4 years makes it easier for others to believe, recruits to believe we are working on a program. Gott put Katz in his place when he said you all didn’t seem to think we had 2 line talent at the beginning of the season.

Now we did our bracket one favor by ousting the number one seed. MSU took care of VA. Given the previous game, who we have coaching, and the matchups we are about to present I do like our chances. RP is 11-1 in the sweet 16 so if we do make it to the elite 8 it will be another game we have to take to get there. To be honest this season I was playing for next year (before this run I had high hopes for being consistently top 15 next year) given that it took our bigs so long to develop, but they are coming around just in time.

I’ll only be mad if our PG’s don’t take care of the ball (1st half LSU and Duke ACC) and if our bigs don’t control the paint area by boxing out, not getting drawn too far out of the lane, fighting for rebounds. These are issues that should have been fixed but if not we should be able to make adjustments in game to limit our exposure.

Coach Gott stated was I was trying to say in the interview with Katz. The first time our talent has been complimented is when we got hot late in the season and the explanation couldn’t be good coaching nor favorable scheduling so of course it’s the talent. Our team as come along way this season from start to finish.

Ralston lets get hot one time or three for Gott before you go.

Heads up – my post is the long way of saying this “Hats off to Mark Gottfried and his staff – not just their recruiting”

I think we are saying relatively the same thing. I don’t look at our talent pool as drastically superior than most and I know its not bad at all. We had a top 5 class which there aren’t any remaining members right? Wasn’t that just RP, TL, and TJW? Then we also had a 17th rated which is middle of of the pack.

I follow our recruiting very closely and I’m aware of the rankings and the excitement around every player when they signed. I’m just saying our talent level isn’t far superior than most of our competition (ranked teams) playing in the ACC. We’ve gone into the tourney with drastically different teams every year. Lorenzo Brown / CJ Leslie / Wood / Howell to them plus Buckets, RP, and TL to last year with Buckets pretty much carrying our team to this year since the emergence of Cat 2.0 and Pack Defense we are a balanced team.

Most of our losses are good losses but we have some WTF’s. When Georgia football loses a game or two their lunatic fringe says fire Mark Richt, I live here and its nuts. While MG hasn’t built anything near what Mark Richt has I feel like our dissenters are sniffing the same stuff 🙂 after our bad losses.

I’m not intending to be argumentative, I really appreciate your (all SFN) perspectives most of the time and they help me really understand our team’s strengths and weaknesses more. Our kids this year developed a little slower (first 20-25 games) than we wanted and it was frustrating. We saw flashes and were disappointed when it wasn’t sustained. However, by the end of the season we have seen virtually every player minus Trevor Lacey (BALLER ALERT) and Ralston Turner make huge leaps from game 1 to now on both sides of the ball.

With the additional experience this year Gott has our team going into next year with the consistent style of high level play that it takes to be successful and compete with the blues. Gott has been getting his type of player, developing them from individual talents to PACK players. All in all building a solid program. Hats off to him and his staff (not just their recruiting is what I’m saying)

its funny that Mark Gottfried gets no credit for great coaching or the program is quickly building. We only have 2 game changing players on our team. One of which has only been game changing the last 10 games. Where is all of the “talent” that people are talking about? I mean most of the team is comprised of top 50 recruits but the only McD AA that’s left is Cat. I remember all the griping out the transfers/early exiters being a sign of poor organization per some.

Purvis, Lewis, and Buckets are all gone. Now if we still had all of those players then I could see all of the talent accolades being bestowed on us. I don’t think any of players outside of Cat 2.0 and Lacey have begun to show us what they can do. Twins, Abu, Anya, Kyle Washington and Freeman are all still very raw but improving. Remember where they were at the beginning of this year? It hurt to watch but we stuck with it… #GOTTCanCoach We’ve always talked about in game adjustments recruitment and player development are the marks of true coaching (and keeping jackasses off the team).

No knock on any other coach in the country but I’m rocking with Gott! I hope this run doesn’t interfere with the off season these guys need to have to be ready to make another (and decidedly more consistent) run at it next year.

Man I’m so looking forward to Friday. Although I like the fact that our players get to rest. Hopefully they aren’t feeling themselves too much. Louisville is a great team led by a legendary head coach.

I don’t expect anything less than a dog fight.

Survive and advance… part 3 of 6… run up to the championship

I can’t think to Sunday… I think I may even listen to Jessica Black this Friday.

We are still in the hunt for Malik Newman along with a bunch of others. My guess is Anthony Grant’s current job situation had to drop Alabama off of the list for his services. I’ve always liked him as a coach although his results didn’t follow him to Tuscaloosa.

I totally hope Gott reaches out to him to see if would join the staff and maybe pull a few recruits in with him. He’ll still be getting paid by Alabama the next few years hopefully so we won’t have to offer him a huge deal to make the move to Raleigh.

Enough of my mind at work… I just hope we get some good kids to say yes. Life is easier with guys like Lacey and Barber in the fold.

ChemE our bracket having 3 ACC schools in it was one of the first things I noticed. I then thought to myself they wouldn’t overload one 1/4 of the bracket with any one conference. I figured at least 9 ACC schools got bids. 2 in every bracket and 3 in ours. Nope they overloaded one bracket with ACC schools.

Hell one game at a time… survive and advance… one pack one goal… statement … we are a hands in the dirt school… whatever the freak we need to hear… win one for the gipper… win one for the V… and hell if neither of those guys matter just win it for lil old me

I think Henderson was a 3 star SG and he looks to be ok. We would have Henderson for the next two years and Lacey for next year (fingers crossed no NCSS) but we could use a reserve SG to provide depth.

I hope we get a baller that doesn’t disrupt our team like Lacey and Buckets last year. I feel like JJ Hickson was equally as dominant but we didn’t seem to be a team.

His stock has cooled a little thank goodness. I don’t think we have to worry about him and the pros. Who worries me most is the black hole Kyle Washington. I like his game alot. Yes it needs improvement but on our team whose game is where we would like it to be? His drastic reduction in playing time has me anxious, almost like Gott is telling him he needs to move on.

sore spot… I absolutely hate that face of March Madness can’t be found on campus anywhere. This is my history lesson hearing that this guy was one of the orchestrators… certainly no love lost.

Him aside, when will Jimmy get the court named after him? I know its only one championship but him through his foundation’s partnership with ESPN and cancer research has made him one of if not the most recognizable name in college basketball. I bet there are students today who know the name but not that he was our coach. I figure you can name the court after him for his off the court accomplishments by now.
