Thankfully, I missed most of the game. However, it sounds like we lost the turnover battle and got killed on the boards. Keatts’ teams will lose when that’s the case because his entire philosophy comes down to having more shots than the other team. They may shoot at a good clip, but we will shoot more 3s, not give up as many 3s and turn you over.

It will be interesting to see what next year is like with more depth and more long guys. I think our offense will take a step back with the likely loss of Yurtsven – but we should be able to defend and turn teams over better. (Of course, if you looked at Keatts Wilmington numbers, you may just conclude that his teams don’t win with defense. I think that’s a little simplistic, but I do believe teams will usually shoot a good percentage vs us because our primary focus is full court press and close out on 3s.

Disagree on Bennett. They are more fundamentally sound than most teams. As for the “it makes my eyes bleed” – if it ain’t sorry grapes, it probably means you deserve basketball the brand of which was employed by Gott.

So Vawolf – what are your thoughts on what we need to do, if anything in the tournament to secure a bid? Personally, it seems to me that we need to win Wednesday to have a relaxing Sunday. All the brackets have us in, but our metrics don’t correlate to a top 10 seed.

Yea VaWolf – notre Dame’s problem is that they haven’t proven to be a great time since his return. A deep ACC tournament run could change that. But thus far, his return has meant a 1-1 record with the only win being a non at-large bid team and a loss to a likely no 1 seed.

The only way we stop this officiating madness is if we start calling them out publicly. There are basically two options:
    1) Hold a press conference and announce that you are hiring an independent firm to look into bias against NC State (note, I chose bias because all too often one of the tactics used to counter the “officials hurt us more than team x” argument is to accuse those making that argument of saying there’s a conspiracy, when people aren’t saying that.) In the initial press conference announce that in 6 months you will hold a press conference to release the findings.

    2) Option 2 – hold a press conference similar to the one you held today (or actually hold a press conference to air your grievances) and say that this type of thing is ridiculous and it’s been a problem for a while. We have gone through the path prescribed by the conference and we aren’t getting anywhere. We refuse to let our athletes and coaches be treated like this. End the press conference there. Next time you see the treatment you got from TV teddy or Jamie Lucky in a nationally televised game – you pull your team off ths court. This needs to be done on the road and in the first half to maximize the impact, preferably at Cameron Indoor or the Dean Done. It’s the nuclear option, but it would get your point across in a dramatic statement.

Well. That stinks. Hopefully, we get the loss out of our system. A bye would have been nice. Take care of business at home vs Louisville and we will be OK.

We 2 more to rest easy on selection Sunday. We just made our job a bit tougher.

Fastback – can’t do that. They are calling plenty of fouls on us. Heck, their pg is actively pushing our guys out of the lane. Yurts guy is pushing him in the back. Freeman got fouled then so did Lenard. Turrible.

Keatts has broken the mold with this year. Most years we are on the bubble because we don’t have those real quality wins (or just have one).

No worries on that front this year. I think we need to 2 of next 3 to be comfortable a week from Sunday. We got 1-2 and we will be sweating it.

Further, a regulatory body that controls the availability of the labor is not a federal, local or state government.

    OK… who’s that ?

the real reason this problem exists us because you don’t have a true marketplace.

True… but if Universities could pay athletes legally, would that not make a ‘market’ either within the restrictions of the ‘baseball rule’ or something similar or if there were no ‘restrictions’ ?

The is so great and the wage cap is so low

typo… What is so great? Supply or Demand ?

    GO PACK!

Bill – the regulatory entity that imposes the wage ceiling is the NCAA. This artificially low ceiling creates a black market and non-transparent (in some cases illegal) payments.

I think the 3 year requirement is unfair as long as the NCAA tournament generates the insane revenue it currently.

Truthfully, all college athletes should be able to negotiate their terms as long as they are qualified academically. And that’s the second peg of this problem – the biggest producers are often unqualified for the school and/or uninterested in taking college classes.

The whole thing is just a sham – at the highest levels, because so much is at stake.

Botb – the baseball rule won’t help much. It’s true, the NBA’s rule does encourage / force kids who have no desire to attend college to do do.

However, the real reason this problem exists us because you don’t have a true marketplace. You have millions of dollars floating around and valuable producers for whom an artificially low wage cap has been set. Further, a regulatory body that controls the availability of the labor is not a federal, local or state government.
The is so great and the wage cap is so low that actors go around the artificially low cap and try to hide the money. Next time, these actors will set up legal entities so they aren’t money laundering (assuming they aren’t already doing so.)

Gentlemen. The stakes have morphed, but the recruitment game has not. I frequently breakfast with a former State coach of the late 60s and early 70s. I speak on the phone monthly with an assistant to Rupp and Wooden.

    Choirboys leave collegiate basketball.

Yea Cow – you would know better than anyone.

Here’s my take – you have a “non-profit organization” that serves as a farm system for America’s two most popular professional sport leagues. The organizations within this non-profit were formed with a much different purpose than the for profit entities they feed. Further, many of those in the glorified farm league have minimal interest in the primary reason for existence of these institutions.

The non-profit enforces arbitrary rules that create an incentive to be less than transparent in ones actions. People, being rational actors participate in the aforementioned transactions.

Then your government entity cracks down on them because they are not reporting these profits to the IRS.

Gott’s and assistants names have shown up on an email.

Shocking that this would happen with Gott I tell you. At this point, I will be shocked if Keatts isn’t involved. I don’t have much confidence in Yow at this point in judging character. Keatts seems to be solid in that category – but I am not sure how he’s in the business and whom he has been associated with – that he is not involved.

The good news is that we haven’t really been involved with too many blue chippers thus far in his tenure.

    Oh well, time will tell.

To be fair, Gott hasn’t been named. Hopefully, he won’t.

College basketball is rotten to the core. That core starts rotting in AAU ball, probably in middle schools where shoe money starts getting dispersed. I am thinking that the coaches – if they were smart had some buffer here that insulated them from the payments.

Went out to bracket matrix and we are in 70 / 77 brackets. This means we are tracking better than the previous week. (Good news!)

I looked at a couple of others that didn’t have us in and we were first four out in all of them.

Good stuff as always Vawolf. I think 3-1 can have us feeling pretty good on selection Sunday. I seem to recall you calling out Louisville a few weeks ago. Since then, aside from one decent road win they have done nothing to help their cause. It would be great if we could go 4-0 down the stretch to really allow us to enjoy the ACC tournament.

I am worried about the BC game as a loss at home to them could really hurt our chances and I think they will be a tough match up for us.

I have been kind of surprised by the stubborn lagging of our RPI. In addition, our resume on kenpom and sagarin could be higher. If they were, I would feel more comfortable with a combination of 2 wins in our remaining 5. However, given our lack Top 45ish ranking in any of those, I think we need to win 3 of our next 5.

That’s not an impossible task. Since the 0-2 start, we have gone 8-4. Let’s just say 4 of those wins we’re against teams that won’t sniff the tournament….that leaves us 4-4 against some pretty good competition. We have one of those games left (@ GaTech) – but the 3 left are pretty much in the toss up category.

Texpack – our RPI will increase because of the road win. Not sure the weight of the old formula.

Our guys totally tried to ruin a solid 30 minute effort in the last 5 but an ACC road win can never be taken for granted.

Rye and wulfpack – that is my concern as well. I hope You thoroughly vetted Keatts. I know that it’s just our luck for us to dragged into this while the school down the road walks away from the biggest cheating scandal in college sports virtually unscathed (though t did hurt their women’s program.)

No freshman 83 – they use the old RPI formula. They evidently saw more correlation between for tourney bid teams than the newer RPI.

What’s interesting about this year is that usually we don’t have a lot of wins vs quality opponents at this point. This year is obviously different.
