We were a bubble team last year? How can you say we would be talking about seeds?

Almost didn’t even answer this because it’s a ridiculous question, but I will just for you in case you honestly don’t understand. We would have Cat playing at this level (a level that is BETTER than last year) and we would have an actual 2 guard in Lacey who would also very likely be playing even better than last year which would take even more pressure off Cat. This improvement that you dismiss would be due having Lacey back another year experienced.

But yet history has shown, especially here at NCSU that Gotts teams no matter how talented live on the bubble.

To me it’s pretty clear that Trevor Lacey leaving last year was unexpected even by Gott. That’s the one thing about Gott that has me worried is his players leaving early and/or transferring. In my opinion that has been without a doubt the BIGGEST factor that has dampened his results here, and especially this season. Not the defense, not the X’s and O’s on offense, not the recruiting, not the friendship between Yow and Gott.

He was fully expecting Lacey to be here this year and I can guarantee you we’d be having talks of how high of a seed we could get in the NCAA tournament rather than bickering about his records at Bama and Murray State.

Cat is gone after this year, 100% adios. Thats written in stone.

I keep reading people saying this. Is there any particular reason to believe this? Like, is there inside information about Cat that he’s already decided? Cause just from the outside looking in, it’s far from a foregone conclusion to me. He’s not anywhere close to a first round draft pick at this point, and maybe not even a second rounder. If he really wants an NBA career, he’d be better off trying to have a Jerian Grant-esque senior year and winning scouts over.

He was brutally close to leaving last year. He has a little girl that he has made comments to others that he “needs to support”

I think all thinks considered at the rate he is playing now he will probably feel he is a first round at best and at worst can easily go to Europe. There is no way he is back next year.

If this season continues to be terribad, then it puts lots of pressure on next season. It is what it is.

Here is where I am at with the program. Cat is gone after this year, 100% adios. Thats written in stone. If history holds true we will probably lose at least one of either Abu, Anya or the twins. Thats how its worked so far. We have Dorn coming but excuse me if I dont put a ton of hope on a UNCC transfer.

Dennis smith has already told the coaches he is one and done regardless. So we are now relying on a freshman to carry the team from the word go, not to mention its going to take some time for him to get his sea legs. So I see 2016 as a bubble team at best with no other recruits on the horizon and 2017 as the total rebuild. A la Coach DD 3 years ago.
years ago. This is Gotts program, this is what he has built in 5 years time. Add to the fact that his teams have never been fundamentally sound enough to beat other squads straight up and we have a recipe for disaster.

Now you know how Yow is going to spin this. NCAA 4 years with 2 sweet 16’s. Thats the cred she is going to lean on to try and calm the masses. Some will agree with her but others like myself will look at where he is finishing in the conference and how his teams play throughout the entire year.

And in the meantime, our homegrown alum that is killing it in Dayton will be snatched up by a bigger program and he will be out of the mix the next time a search happens just like his big brother. Just think if Fowler wasnt so much of a retard we could have had S Miller as our coach. He wanted to coach, he begged for an interview and we all know the rest of the story.

Nobody here can say he has peaked. He is an average to good coach. You can’t ignore the question of who do you hire if you are willing to get rid of what you have. Yeah this year looks like it could be a down year but every year that is said. This year you may be right

Here is what I know. Talent wins games. Most college kids don’t want to play defense. All believe they will be playing in the league one day. I know what we have in Gottfried. Warts and all. He recruits well and his teams don’t play defense on a consistent basis. Do I think he can catch lightning in a bottle just as easy as the next average to good coach they decide to hire? Yes I do.

Based on his history yeah, we have an excellent idea of what he is. A bubble coach. Nothing more nothing less. I would rather have a team with an above average coach then above average talent on the roster. The NCAA is loaded with teams way less talented than us and way more successful. Its across the board. How can anyone argue that based on talent alone we are in another stratosphere than ASU, Winthrop, WandM, HP etc? Speaking of ASU we out-recruited herbs team by a wide margin in the past three years, they get a gritty new coach and boom look what happens.

Coaching in the NCAA is absolutely everything. Gott is a bubble coach. If you are happy with that then so be it. It sucks as someone mentioned earlier that Yow and Gott are actually ‘friends’. Its not a standard boss/employee relationship and it clouds the vision of the program. The raise and ext are exhibit ‘A’.

I think we are sunk as a program until at least 2019, probably 2020 when a new AD gets in and wants to hire his guys for the revenue sports. That is unless Yow gives us a parting gift of another substantial raise and ext before she leaves.

“We are scared of NC State’s defense” …said no one. #GottD?

Look if you’re happy with the results over the last 4 years and don’t expect anything more then you’re more than happy with keeping Gottfried around forever, hoping he’ll trip over himself to a better result.

My bar is not determined by the 3 previous predecessors to Gottfried and their average to epic fail results. Please don’t spout the line about if Henderson was healthy all year we’d be better because Henderson can’t overcome the horrendous defense this team puts on the court. In all likelihood Gottfried has already peaked at State but thanks to Yow’s colossal mistake of giving him an extension before this season started there’s no chance of replacing him anytime soon. My only hope is UCLA or some other program gets really drunk one night and hires him away.

I still to this day dont understand the rationale for giving him an extension and 20% raise. I asked before and got some vague answer about recruiting, rewarding sweet 16’s and better than our previous coaches. If someone could explain it to me like a third grader I would appreciate it.

^ I stand by my statement. Didn’t say he didn’t land some great NC kids. To clarify, the net outcome of his time here was alienation of many high school coaches and programs.

There is absolutely no proof at all especially considering he was still recruiting well up until the end.

Amato recruited well but not particularly well in NC. He landed Mario Williams and Tank Tyler but his recruits in-state weren’t phenomenal. He upgraded speed by hitting Florida. Helped that Joe Pate and staff landed a few NFL picks from Alabama. More problematic was that Amato managed to alienate and insult a number of NC High School coaches and programs.

His tenure was followed up by arguably the worst recruiting staff in NC State’s last 20-30 years. O’Brien and co just didn’t work hard enough here or elsewhere.

DD has done pretty good in-state until this year. If he wants to continue that progress, he has to win on the field now. The next two years are pivotal. I wouldn’t measure success in-state by looking at the top 10 players. Lawrence wasn’t only a top 10 player in-instate, but a top 10 player in the country supposedly. Sure, it would be nice to land a few of those, but classes vary in depth and position from year to year, as do team’s needs. We could definitely use help at some of the positions above, but some aren’t priorities for this year’s class either. IMO, if you expand the list to the top 25-50 players, we should be getting at a minimum of 10% given the number of schools in state. Anything less, I think, doesn’t bode well.

Dude his instate haul was phenomenal. Not sure where you are getting that. Baker, A brown, AJ Davis, etc. He struck gold here in this state as well as FLorida.

The market spoke on Chuck Amato’s coaching ability. I said he’d never come anywhere near another HC job, and he didn’t. WAY more than just his arrogance rubbing donors the wrong way (also assistants, players, staff, administrators, etc.).

Totally totally get that but if talent wins games and if recruiting was going well (he was still pulling in the top NC talent) then I think his leash should have been longer.

Just have to win. Adebayo chose UK because they win. Clemson is competing for a national championship. Just that simple, win.

Technically we lost Bam because Cal puts kids in the NBA. But your point remains.

As far as recruiting we will always and I mean always be behind the 8 ball in football recruiting in this state. Too many variables to overcome. The once in a generation type recruiter that we had (amato) couldnt get along with Murphy and was fired prematurely.

So I have always advocated we need to hire a gimmicky coach like Leach, Dykes or Ken N (Navy) and try and win like that. I think the air raid in the ACC would win a ton of games.

I guess good is relative. But I am not going to knock the man for not winning in an impossible situation. The limitations he had placed on the program would make it hard for anyone.

Sid should never have been hired. He looked like he should be chopping barbecue at Wilburs during games. Sweaty and had absolutely no clue what was going on.

That is the question every year for most all ACC teams. As the competition grows the where becomes more important. At this point I see the same model as we have seen with Gott. Slow start, team improves and makes it to the NCAA tourney. Maybe one day more but that is the history. Those that don’t like the routine I remind of Lowe, that other guy and Les.

Les was a good coach (x and o’s) and did the best with what he could. Sid should never have been hired in the first place so both are not remotely comparable IMO.

If this is Gott ball, living life on the bubble then that simply is not good enough. It just isnt. We have been on the bubble 4 out of 5 years now and at some point it needs to become unacceptable. But who are we kidding here, Gott is here for as long as Yow is and 2019 is when a new AD comes in and they typically want to do their own hiring. So as a Pack fan we must continue to just suck it up and wait for that proverbial “next year”.

I get the sweet 16 talk and accomplishment I really do, but at some point he is going to have to finish in the upper tier of the conference to do any damage in the ACC tourney. The extra games now for the lower seeds creates an unrealistic disadvantage as you go further in the weekend. I may be out of my mind and an old timer but I would much rather see us make some deep runs (finals etc) in ACC tourney and maybe win it then a sweet 16. I know others put more emphasis on the NCAA but I think we just need a title in something to get the monkey off our back and Gotts teams/style/method simply isnt going to do that.

“I’m a little worried about what the coaching staff seems to be doing with Cat” – I don’t understand how/why he plays 40 minutes when we have a 20 point half time lead. At least give him 2-3 minutes near the end of the first half. I’m afraid he will be mentally exhausted by February.
Before I ever saw this team play (and before the Henderson inury) I really thought this team could win 10-12 ACC games. Now I’m thinking 5-7 could be a more realistic target. Ugh.

Once we hit the grind of the schedule in the ACC, I just dont know where are points are going to be coming from outside of Barber.

Gott started with a bang, and now it appears to be tapering off (at least as far as this season is concerned). Herb started very slow then became Mr. Consistent as far as NCAA bids go. But, we all knew we weren’t going anywhere with him beyond what we had already reached. Some may be saying the same about Gott now. I don’t know. I do know that if he and/or his staff does not begin to emphasize team defense in a serious way, we’re probably stuck in neutral. It’s really stinkin’ bad now. Part of that is personnel, but I see no evidence of any kind of focus on that end of the floor.

To me, the big wildcard is how long do K, Roy, and Pitino go? Can’t be too much longer. When they bow out, are we prepared to take a major step forward? UVa found their man. I believe Wake has as well (at least until Self retires). We need him to have us exactly in that position to fill the void. But it has got to be on both ends.

I wish we would just hire Archie and get it over with. Gotts teams will never play the gritty way to finish in the top tier of the ACC. He is proven to be just what he is. Take away the miracle sweet 16’s and its a pretty crappy run all things considered. Its just a damn shame trying to figure out how teams like Dayton, Xavier and Cincinnati are better and way more prepared in basketball then we are. It just seems like this program has an unlimited resource of excuses.

Gott pretty much sucks and his record is proof positive. Same teams year in and year out.

TA fumbled the ball at Ohio state as Rivers was leading a come from behind. He cost State more than one win.

And Maryland, dont forget that one

Gottfried is a C- coach. But we have a couple of Sweet 16s to show for it, so why complain, amirite?

Is a sweet 16 really that big of an accomplishment to hang your hat on all things considered?

In these close games where things are tough offensively, it would be nice to be able to rely on our team D to pull us through. Not the case with this program. It is frustrating. Same problems over and over.

Maybe I am being too pessimistic here but I just feel we are in a dark dark place with Wolfpack athletics. Gott is who he is and doesnt seemt to even want to change his style or coach the team up. Same issues since year one and I agree its frustrating. To win the ACC its imperative to finish in the top tier to avoid the extra game and I just dont see that happening this year or any for that matter.

Coach DD is so far behind the 8 ball now its not even funny. I think with this team he had a good oline, 5th year senior qb, Vtech/louisville down, easy OOC, that this was the year to make a big statement. Nope same crappy recruiting, same boneheaded lack of adjustments etc. Next year is going to get ugly based on the schedule not making things easier for him at all.

Yow is here for 3 more years AND she just gave both raises and extensions (for God knows what reasons, PP says they share the same agent but I cannot confirm) so all 3 are here for at least 2 more years. Probably 3.

Just bummed man, really bummed. I wish I knew the answers but I truly dont. My wife and I gave until it hurt in the early Chuck years but that has tapered off dramatically due to things like kids and oh the product we are watching.

I see other programs being successful and just cannot figure out for the life of me why NCSU makes it so hard.

BJD: I’m with you on that one. Our mission every time we get the ball should be to put it in the end zone. UNC is going to score. If we’re going to win, we’re going to have to score early and often. While field position will be important, this game won’t be won playing Beamerball.

I don’t like our chances, but I really hope the team proves me wrong.

Not to sound redundant but I think the only way we can win this game and by pulverize Williams. We have to hit him hard the very first play and not let up.

Updated bowl projections have us in the Military Bowl against Navy or the Belk Bowl against LSU.

Both would be tough outs. That big kid at LSU would give us fits and the running game of Navy is fun to watch as well. How the hell hasnt Ken N not been hired somewhere by now. Its obvious that dude can coach. Wish Yow would have looked at him harder.

The Memphis coach Fuentes I believe, is a hot name and could end up at USC.

Don’t be surprised if Virginia tech makes a run for miles.

I have a friend at church that is tied in pretty well with the USC athletics and he says they are looking hard at Fedora. Not sure what that means exactly but he is on their list.

If Miles or Richt got fired then we should pat DD on the head and send him on his way if we could get either of the 2. richt would be a God send since he already has the recruiting ties built in. I know they would be expensive but IMO would be well worth the cost and the return on investment would be spectacular.

I agree Gott is a B+ coach. I believe he will never win a title of any sort while he is here but we don’t suck. His indifference to defense will always keep him from doing anything really significant. I wish I saw him changing but there is more than ample history to see he has no desire to change that. I am fairly apathetic at this point.

My very long range prediction is this: Gott is obviously here through Yows tenure 2019, producing the exact same results, middle tier ACC finisher. Perennial bubble team. New AD comes in and wants his(or her) guy in that position. Much like Yow and TOB/Lowe. New AD applies crazy pressure a la yow TOB/Sid and has to make a change when results are the same. Fanbase again splinters.

That is all contingent of course if Yow doesnt give him another raise/extension on her way out which is pretty likely given her history.

V is a “once in a lifetime” kind of phenomenon. If you are really, really lucky.

He was the total package. From recruiting, to bringing excitement to the actual x and o’s come game time he was the real deal and just a treat to talk to.

He veered way the hell of course though as soon as he became AD. No need at all for him to be in that position IMO.
