Best first half I have seen on the road in a long time

And BYU was up 23-0 with 5 minutes left in the half. Then, they give up a FG, a tipped pass which is intercepted followed by a spearing penalty turns into a TD and then a fumble leads to a hail mary for a TD. An easy cover up 23-0 at the half becomes 23-15 (missed both PAT). No wonder Vegas is so rich. Suckers.

NC State (-2) at South FLorida – OK, I have missed the Pack’s game both weeks so far. But I have confidence in the offense and a less extreme South Florida offense. If Maryland can win there, State will win there. Besides, you know Jacoby has this game circled and wants a big performance, being from South Florida.

Texas A&M (-31.5) vs. Rice – This A&M schedule is so weak. Lamar, Rice, who is next? Texas State with Scott Bakula as QB?

Southern Miss (-48) at Alabama – I just don’t envision Saban running up the score so big that he beats someone by 7 touchdowns. That is way too much for Saban. Spurrier would do it in a heartbeat, but Saban is a defensive coach. He doesn’t want to run it up too much. Plus, he is handicapped having an OC of Lane Kiffin.

Old Dominion (-17) vs. Eastern Michigan – That offense we saw last week is really good and Eastern Michigan has struggled over the past year or two. They even struggle running onto the field.

BYU (-18.5) vs. Houston – Houston lost to BJD95’s new favorite team, UTSA, by 20 at home. BYU went to Texas and won by 34. The transitive property in math says that BYU beats Houston by 54. That will easily cover the spread.

One big positive from the first two games. 5 total penalties for only 25 yards. Great discipline so far.

I have a friend of a friend who after graduating from an Ivy league school, moved to the Triangle for work. He and his family about 15 years ago decided to buy Duke season tickets (4 for $99) in the horseshoe. They really liked them (although they had zero pull for Duke over State or UNC…it was a money thing).

He stopped getting them this year now that they are getting good. The quote is “They are getting decent. Too many people are showing up at the games. We have too many people sitting on our row.”

If guys transferred in college for whatever reason, and then they make the league, the media will always say that they are from the last school they attended. Case in point. Troy Aikman is always from UCLA. You never hear that he is from Oklahoma. He transferred from Oklahoma to UCLA.

I know it is a little different since Wilson graduated from State, but still.

If Alex Johnson, Ralston Turner, Trevor Lacey, etc. makes it to the NBA, you will hear the media say that he is from NC State, both Cal State-Baskerfield, LSU, or Alabama, respectively.

I appreciate Wilson acknowledging his time with the Wolfpack and he is a fine representative of the school.

NC State (-16) vs. ODU – The Pack continues the second half surge against a team that is nowhere near the level of Georgia Southern.

BYU (+3.5) at Texas – With Texas QB Ash out (and with so many concussions I hope for his sake he retires), BYU returns with a potent offense and will straight up beat the Longhorns.

ECU (+16.5) at South Carolina – While South Carolina will play better (they can’t play worse), I can still see ECU and that offense pulling out a W. But I definitely envision Hardy running roughshod over the Gamecocks D and will keep this game within one score.

Kentucky (-11) vs Ohio – The Wildcats may not make a bowl game but they are improving. They looked good last week and their revamped offense will take care of Ohio.

Auburn (-31) vs San Jose St – Nick Marshall is back. In the 2nd half, they outscored Arkansas 24-0. It may be the same score at the end of the first quarter on Saturday.

One thing that sticks out to me is the lack of penalty yards. This team has to minimize the negative plays, both sacks and TFL as well as penalties. No holding calls, no personal fouls, no pass interference. That was a good sign from Saturday.

NC State (-22.5) vs. Georgia Southern – No chance of overlooking Georgia Southern after what they did to Florida last year. Brissett starts out strong.

Ohio State (-17) vs. Navy – Ohio State, still smarting from a Spartan beatdown, dots the I and wins easily.

Nebraska (-23.5) vs. Florida Atlantic – Bo Pelini takes revenge for Florida Atlantic no longer having his brother Carl as head coach.

Auburn (-21) vs. Arkansas – Arkansas hit rock bottom last year (even worse than after the Bobby Petrino “incident”) and has to be better this year. But starting off at Jordan-Hare and the ghosts of “The Miracle at Jordan-Hare” and the “Kick Six” will guarantee the Razorbacks will continue their struggles under Bret Beilema.

Baylor (-33) vs. SMU – Baylor is the Oregon of the Southwest. With the QB Petty returning, and SMU losing their QB Gilbert (ex-Texas QB), this game will be a blowout. I forsee 65-20 for the Bears.

    P5 includes Notre Dame automatically.

It isn’t any different if we were to schedule Duke as an OOC in 2023.

I hope that both programs are back on the way up as life is much more interesting, except for Morganton couches, when both teams are winning consistently.

Good seeing some of the Olympic sports do better. This was something that needed to happen to improve the Director’s Cup standings.

Now, if the basketball programs to continue to dance in March while getting the football and baseball teams back on the right track, achieving the top 25 program will be very doable.

Good point ncsslim. If you look in the Atlantic Division (and divisions don’t matter for the ACC Tournament), the three teams in front of them all have 12 wins. If State plays well and sweeps Wake, State and Wake will both have a 12-15 record in the ACC. And Clemson only has 12 wins too…but with only 11 losses, they are a good chance to make it to Greensboro. If State and Clemson finish with the same number of victories, my assumption/guess is that Clemson would finish above State since they have fewer losses (even though State won the series with the Tigers)…but I could be wrong.

As far as the sweep of Coastal Carolina, Rodon pitched great and finally got a lot of run support. Turner was a beast this weekend, hitting something like .818. He was on base for 14 straight appearances. Never heard of that before. Kizner hit the ball well. Ratledge and Austin continued their hot bats. Armstrong and Shepard are coming around as well.

The pitching staff is getting better and the bullpen is not last year’s, but a committee effort. Even little used members earlier in the year are seeing crunch time now, like Beckman and Wilder.

IMO, the key for the stretch is three-fold:
    1. Turner stays hot. If he is getting on base, State is a pretty tough out. He is the catalyst.
    2. Other starters get to the 5/6/7 inning. If that happens, whether that is Peterson/Peterson/Jernigan/Stone, whoever, would be great.
    3. The defense tightens up and lowers the miscues in the field. Can’t give up extra outs to teams.

Good and much needed sweep this weekend. Probably need to win 5 of 6 ACC games to have a solid chance to make it to Greensboro. 2 games out of the tournament with 2 series left. The two teams in front of us are Maryland (who swept State) and Pitt (who didn’t play State).

Maryland plays at Pitt this weekend (Maryland’s last series of the year)
Pitt goes to Notre Dame (cellar dweller) next weekend)

It is possible, but it is not certain.

What would be interesting would be if State sweeps both Wake and VT but fails to make it into the ACC Tournament. Would the NCAA pick State as an at-large seeing as they could be on hypothetically a 13 game win streak, finished .500 in the conference, and have star power. The committee would know the team could make some noise in the tournament if they get in. It would be an interesting decision.

Bye bye Donald. I think the part that is being overlooked and is just hysterical is that he told this to his girlfriend but he is still married. Imagine that 25 years ago. That would discussed more even though his own statements would definitely be the lead story.

In the battle of cheeses, Wisconsin really told American who is boss.

And Pitt must think that they are still playing UNC. What a beatdown on Colorado.
