ParticipantI’m not sure how or if she was involved in that bad spending at merryland but what is the current financial state of Screw Up U?
“Yow’s “pick,” N.C. State Chancellor Randy Woodson, praised Yow for the success Maryland athletics has experienced under her watch. Since Yow came to College Park, the Terrapins have claimed 16 NCAA-sanctioned national championships in five sports. She also helped reduce an inherited, unfounded department deficit of $51 million to $5.5 million.”
“Last fall [article published June 26, 2010] Maryland revealed that season ticket sales in football have declined each year since the 2005 season. Last season [2009], the Maryland football team finished 2-10, a performance that led Yow to attempt — and fail — to raise the funds necessary to buy out Friedgen’s contract, according to multiple high-ranking donors. Many of those sources said Yow also tried to buy out Williams’s contract during the 2008-09 season.”
Looks to me like she was responsible for quite the financial turnaround as well as trying to boot the underperforming FB coach. She also had to deal with cranky Gary, who has poisoned the waters.

Participant“Yeah, beating Dook was great Andy, that was our second win in a 12 game stretch of futility including the 51 point beatdown at the Holes, losing to BC, GT and Wake. Twice. But hey, we went to the tourney a while ago, right? Did I mention that we’re 325th in scoring defense? Pretty good if you ask me. The ACC is tough. Boggles my mind how Virginia can be number 1. They must practice that stuff. But who cares, we’ve got the #1 PG in the country. How you like them apples?”

ParticipantNattering nabobs of negativism.

ParticipantFrom an ESPN Insider article by Jeff Goodman and some other dood (I can only see the beginning because I refuse to pay for it):
“It wasn’t all that long ago that NC State fans and athletic director Debbie Yow were ecstatic with Mark Gottfried.” That’s the first sentence, and for the life of me I don’t recall anyone being ecstatic with Gottfried. I think for the most part, at first it was “who?”, then “OK, this might work out” and now “what the WTF?” I have been ecstatic about the TEAM, especially getting to the Sweet 16, but IMO those events were lightning in a bottle and not the result of building a program. Actually it was all the more frustrating knowing that the team could compete, but lack of leadership (and defense) held it back from being a consistent contender. 2¢.
Of course the lead photo is Arch.

ParticipantPlease, no letters, no updates, no public displays of frustration… just surprise me with a hire as soon as the chosen coach is available.

ParticipantIMO Parrish et al are just outing themselves as ill-informed, surface-level gadflies. Hell, if they would give xphoenix87’s Defensive Breakdown series a read they might be able to figure out that there are real coaching shortcomings here. That said, you can lead a troll to facts, but you can’t make him think.

ParticipantArchie spoke fondly of his time at State, and the competition on Tobacco Road. He was absolutely non-committal about everything but coaching his team – as expected. Any contact at this point would have been through an intermediary anyway for plausible deniability.

RE:
Things always change, always, always. They always do. We can be successful. There is no birthright to success anywhere.
This. I am so tired of lectures from Holes who think that this situation cannot change, and that State fans should just deal with it. That coming from a school that cared so much about winning that they created an entire sham course of studies to keep athletes from multiple sports eligible. Get out.
MrPlywood
ParticipantListening to Archie right now. Crazy that the State announcement right before Archie came on. Of course he denies contact with any school.
MrPlywood
ParticipantIF we are concerned about how we are viewed by coaching candidates, then as much as I dislike it, we should let him finish the season.
Listening the Newy Scruggs Show (NBC Sports Radio) again this morning, caught an interview with Jeff Gravely who perpetuated the “Debbie Yow is hard to work for” meme. Guh. WTF is with that?
Newy to his credit is still in State’s corner and touts State an opportunity for the right coach, and like posters here pointed out, that other ACC schools are doing well despite competing with unx and Dook.
Speaking of Dook, Scruggs mentioned Chris Collins as a potential candidate (his idea) and his on-air partner said that no Dook player would ever coach against Dook in the ACC. Really?
Archie is on the show at 2:30pm EST. Of course he won’t say much about any job openings, but I’ll listen anyway.
MrPlywood
ParticipantIf he’s gone, this is silly. I’m on the Coach Anya train.

ParticipantSurprise me and name the successor 24 hours after Gott’s official day of reckoning. No muss, no fuss.
MrPlywood
ParticipantIMO a win tonight would be even more evidence that the program is in disarray.
MrPlywood
ParticipantNewy Scruggs on NBC Sports Radio was talking up NC State and the “open” position, adamant that State can compete and that it’s a good situation for a coach who wants to compete and take on ORW and K. He reminded everyone how K started out. And he mentioned Archie, who will be on the show tomorrow. The show starts at noon EST.

ParticipantI’m not sure about the link but I love honking the horn anytime someone is putting or teeing off.
So that was you back in the day when I was playing the old par 3 18th at RGA.
Looks great. Nice, new approach to golf instruction. And then, on the other hand, it looks like crap.
Get yourself a copy of Jack’s “Golf My Way” DVD, watch, absorb, replicate. I find Chamblee to be insufferable, so for that reason alone I say no.

ParticipantThe general rule of thumb for predicting State decisions, is to ask yourself, “What would a proactive, highly successful organization do?” Then simply expect the opposite. This highly scientific method has proven remarkably accurate going on 27 years now.
The solution is simple, really…

ParticipantThe Demarest Tweet is about as clear as a Michael Flynn explanation.
MrPlywood
ParticipantIf he’s fired, let him walk and finish with an interim.

Yep. So if something is in the works, do you whispers into the kids’ ears or what?

ParticipantWell, I’m not the jinx since I didn’t watch and they didn’t win. I will pretty much watch any State game any time, but completely zoned on this one – signs of the times. I took a walk in the very rare 10″ of snowfall we got over the last 2 days, and returned refreshed and in a good frame of mind. Funny how that happens.
As for Gott, I don’t see a way forward. He had plenty of talent, just a delay with Yurtseven getting on the court and Mav’s concussion. Hopefully DY is concocting a health related early retirement scenario for Gott, and has had minions already on the phone with potential replacements.
I was thinking about the Falcons hiring Sarkisian, and just to be morbid I wondering what the equivalent hire would be for State bball. Then I thought that maybe Gott was it 😐
MrPlywood
ParticipantI did (do?) grudgingly admire the “slap the floor we’re gonna tighten up the D now” choreography that Dook used to do. (Do they still? Doesn’t seem like it.) I think it inspired their team to play tough, instilled fear in the hearts of opponents and worked wonders getting the refs to prepare for “tendencies” aka “Dook is playing very aggressive tough D WITHOUT FOULING”. I really wish State had something like that to fall back on, along with actual defense skills and strategy. The Pack never should have lost to Cuse or the Canes, because they should have had a plan to shut down the likes of Gillon and Reed having field days.
