Good point there by the commentator, with all the offensive rebounds we should be up, even when you consider the wacky play where we got 5 orebs.

    We’ve not beaten a top 3 team since 2005

We beat #1 Duke at PNC in 2012.

does Mark Gottfried have the coaching capacity to get us there? I think not.

I think it’s fair to question it. Dude got out-coached HARD tonight. It’s like he was surprised we were playing so well, because you just know some of those shots were not the product of good play-calling. I mean, the three by the Twin? That was NOT drawn up. That ridiculous Lacey three? Ad-libbed. I like Gott, I do. And I will always say that. But I am not sure he has a handle on this 3-headed beast of a team we’ve got. By no means does that mean fire him. But even he’s gotta be tired of these “moral victory” spins he’s gotta spin during his post-game.

    Questions I have:
    1. When will Gott talk to Lacey about not playing hero ball?
    2. When will our PGs learn to trust the bigs enough to throw it to em off the pick and roll?
    3. When will our bigs learn to actually finish from 4 feet?

Free throw shooting. Lacey playing unnecessary hero ball. Defensive rebounding.

    Moral victory?

Only meant someone with Vandy’s height. And I was one of his biggest detractors over the years, but he really did step it up last year. We need one of our bigs to step it up in the same way. I’m not saying to ACC POY level, but Vandy really made a point to contribute in his own small way, whether it was cleaning up misses, grabbing boards, or just playing tough D. And that was huge b/c the rest of our bigs were young and untested.

Des Lee is right where he needs to be (on the bench). Anya has no post moves, could be his lack of quickness, still needs to shed pounds. KW is only okay on offense, defensively, he plays soft for a “big” man. And, I loved seeing the Martin twins playing together, I think they really thrive playing as a duo. If we still had a legit tall guy like Vandy and a clear floor general, we would be dangerous.

Great win. As a coach, i would always be happy with great defensive effort in the face of a loss. And that’s what I want out of these guys in the next three games, no matter if we win or lose, play hard, tough defense. Hope the boys keep it up.

Pointing out deficiencies is not a bad thing. Having lived the Lowe years, actually on campus from 2007-2011, I will admit I was glad to see him gone. And I really enjoyed Gott’s first year, showed a lot of promise. Sadly, we’ve underachieve since. And I am beginning to *see* it all unravel. I still like Gott as a person, but damn, can we play defense? Can we bring the ball up court and get into our offense? Can we rebound? That’s all I want. Is that too much to ask?

Wow, I wasn’t even aware that Cronin wasn’t coaching until after the game. Lose at home. Lose at home by double digits. Lose at home by double digits to an assistant coach . . . .

Was at work so I had to listen on the radio, but even THAT sounded ugly. Porous defense and no sign of the high octane Princeton offense. ACC play is going to suck. That press will kill off any chance of us picking up signature wins against Dook, UNCheat, or UVA.

I think Gott is a good guy and all. Really appreciate the 3 straight NCAAs. But he isn’t the coach of the future.

Cat was NEVER better than Lewis. It’s simply because we saw Cat play in smaller doses last year. I was VERY underwhelmed with his play, but we all tricked ourselves into thinking, “Oh, he’ll get better during the offseason.” NOPE!

Gottfried should have never benched Tyler Lewis. I know he was small etc., but that kid could play. He knew how to run an offense like a QB and he had sooooo much heart. Cat seems to be a street baller–he can’t play organized basketball to save his life. And Gottfried’s lack of defense is really showing. I know 3 straight trips to the NCAA sounds great and all, but I don’t see us making another one with this group of guys, meaning we’re out of the tourney for at least 2-3 years. And Gott may be out of a job by that time.

    BJD,
Do yourself and favor and do not watch.

Gotfried has recruited these guys and they are all flawed, except for Lacey.
    Big men who cannot score.
    PGs who cannot shoot.
SF who cannot do anything but shoot.

Definitely excited for Saturday, always liked Hugs. I remember when WVa was really good a few years ago, but I don’t recall what happened to their squad to make them less than stellar since then. A win would be a great confidence-builder for our guys heading towards the full non-conference schedule.

My buddy said it best, we are the NCAA equivalent of Oprah when it comes to giving leads away. And the commentators are aware (“and the NC State fans are starting to feel comfortable”).

Watching us run our offense is . . . so painful . . . yet somehow . . . buckets? Thank God for Ralston Turner.

There is a whole thread on this.

Ahhh, my bad, have not been on SFN or the forums in a long while (studying for the bar exam).

What do you guys think about ESPN’s Top 50 Coaches list? Gott isn’t up there (not saying he should be, though they have the likes of Mike Brey on it). I think 3 straight NCAA appearances, including 1 Sweet 16 (after years of futility), good recruiting, and a player taken in the lottery deserves at least an honorable mention. Though, I agree with what everyone else has said; we MUST get better defensively, particularly defensive rebounding and cutting down on the TOs (especially on inbounds).

I see us finishing with a better record next year. Another NCAA berth. Challenges are the norm: Dook, Syracuse, Louisville, UNX. The rest of the ACC is either in flux (like us) or not as good as us imo. Our guys really started to get it towards the end of the season, and I believe they will put the work in this summer and fall to get there.

Proud of TJ. Ever watch The League? Well, TJ’s a class act lol. We basically knew he was gone (let’s be honest), so the guys were ready for this news.

@bill.onthebeach – Well said. Lewis did save our butts on more than one occasion. That said, he had some deficiencies on defense. Good luck. Now Gott needs to develop Cat. And that’s gonna take a helluva lot of work because Cat’s game as a true PG was not as consistent as Lewis’. But that’s why there’s an offseason.

So when’s this presser? My thought was TJ would make an announcement today, or does it just mean he is going home to Durham to have a sit-down with his folks tonight, with a potential presser tomorrow? Ennis is gone. Embiid is gone (but he says he’s undecided). Paige is returning. Selden is returning. What’s TJ doing?

TJ and his family will make the best decision for him. It’s really funny, many of my NC State friends were texting me, posting on my Facebook etc. about him leaving, but for the first time in a while, I wasn’t worried about a star player leaving. I really think TJ’s a good kid, plain and simple. He had his little mess-up with Coach Gott and Twitter last year, but apart from that, I think he’s got a good head on his shoulders, and I believe in my heart that whatever decision he makes will be one guided by maturity. It’s been a pleasure and an honor to witness the history that TJ made this year. I’m only 24, so I never got to see Corch, the Skywalker, or Gugliatta play in State unis, but TJ is definitely up there with Julius as one of my favorites to ever wear the red and white.

Best of luck to you, young man.
