He deserves more praise and recognition than he will receive just because he’s on a team that’s not a threat to win the conference. He is so fun to watch.

Were I an NBA scout, the only negatives I see regarding Barber’s draft stock are his size and style of play. By that I mean he has a slight frame and he plays a game that initiates or invites contact. The bodies at the next level are taller and heavier and his body will take a beating. All that being said, I don’t see how he’s not a top 20 pick especially if scouts take note of how much his 3p shot and FT% has improved.

I recently heard one of the radio talking heads discuss about how San Antonio has completely changed the way they use their personnel and play the game. For instance their players don’t dunk. That paired with the way they limit their star players’ minutes in back-to-backs help their guys stay fresh later in the year.

“Yeah, I would start playing Kirk and Li’l Corch just to spread the misery/suck around, if nothing else. Allows you to pull dudes out when the effort gets to “Twin A in the first half” level, too.
Are they not ready/ACC caliber players? WHO F-ING CARES??”

^ That’s what I don’t get. If he has job security for the next year or two, why does it seem he’s coaching for his life and not using the seldom used bench players for in game teaching moments and to send messages?

I think it’s worth reiterating that this Louisville team lost 83% of their scoring from last year. That was a team we beat in Louisville and many thought we should have beaten in the S16.

That Louisville team had 7 departures. One graduated (W. Blackshear), two early declarants for the NBA draft (So T. Rozier and Jr M. Harrell), one dismissed from the team (Sr C. Jones), and three transfers (Fr S. Aaron, So A. Gill, So A. Agau). And they look pretty good despite the attrition.
(all this info I gathered from their Wikipedia page so take that for what it’s worth)

“ ‘Painfully loyal’ Daniel_Simpson_Day? I don’t see how she’s been ‘painfully loyal’ to DD. ” – maybe you should go back and read my post again. You asked why she wouldn’t fire Doeren when she has shown a history of firing other coaches. My answer is because historically ADs don’t fire HCs they have just hired, especially in high profile coaching positions; it reflects very poorly on them. I didn’t mean to imply she was painfully loyal to anyone; just pointing out ADs are willing to accept short term below average or mediocre results from their hires.

And I think most everyone understands there is a direct correlation in college football between recruiting rankings and performance. Most of the teams in the top 30 in recruiting rankings are annual contenders for conference championships and top tier bowls.

“so why do you think she would be any different for Doeren?” – because it is common practice for recently hired ADs to remove a coach hired by the previous administration at the first sign of under-performance. However, ADs that are relatively new in their position are painfully loyal to their hires. Few ADs who have been at an institution less than 10 years are going to be allowed to lead a second football head coaching search.

“who are you going to get at this point who is better than you currently have?” – it’s a gamble. Maybe you roll a 7 maybe you crap out, but the alternative may be a decade of a younger version of Tom O’Brien (or worse).

And these conversations are fun/interesting for the MBs, and maybe some of the trustees have the same discussions behind closed doors sipping brandy and smoking cigars (wow how dated is that imagery). But nothing is going to happen anytime soon barring a colossal scandal or collapse.

My biggest gripe is not building a deep roster. Rowan and Kirk should be playing fill in the gap minutes. Glue guys that really contribute in year 3 & 4, not be expected to contribute the number of minutes required of Rowan right now.

What do we have, 9 scholarship players eligible to play minutes (and actually make tangible contributions)? And one of those is out until February? Has Gottfried ever had a roster with more than 10 eligible scholarship players? And I’m not talking about a walk on who was awarded his scholarship because we couldn’t sign anyone else. Why do people continue to accept that Gottfried is only utilizing 75% of their scholarships (the program’s most valuable assets)? I understand you want to maintain good scholarship spacing and keeping an ace up your sleeve for that big 5* recruit you might sign, but Godamighty at some point you gotta make sure you have enough bodies to run an effective practice!

As others have said, Gottfried’s rosters have no margin for injuries/illness/suspension. To me that is a correctable flaw (even though the staff has shown no evidence they realize it’s a flaw). And with a deeper roster, the coaches would be able to encourage more aggressive defensive activity. You just can’t play aggressive defense when you only have 7 guys that can give you quality minutes.

Maybe it’s the holidays, but I think the reduced activity around here shows a hint of apathy toward the basketball program.

I was trying to watch on my tiny Nook and not really listening to the audio, but nobody’s asking the question I had at the end of the game. Why sub in Anya to shoot the FTs?!? I understand wanting Anya in for defense, but why not sub in someone who can shoot FTs at a clip better than 1-3 (even if it is a scrub) for Martin and sub in Anya for Rowan? I just didn’t get that.

“I’m a little worried about what the coaching staff seems to be doing with Cat” – I don’t understand how/why he plays 40 minutes when we have a 20 point half time lead. At least give him 2-3 minutes near the end of the first half. I’m afraid he will be mentally exhausted by February.
Before I ever saw this team play (and before the Henderson inury) I really thought this team could win 10-12 ACC games. Now I’m thinking 5-7 could be a more realistic target. Ugh.

“Miami at #2? Someone needs to back away from the crack pipe.” – yeah, if you haven’t seen any of the pictures of the crappy attendance for their senior day you need to check them out. That’s all you need to “negatively recruit” against them.
From what I’ve heard, Miami doesn’t have money to spend on an elite coach and they are in a long term lease agreement with a pro stadium that is a 45 minute drive from campus.
Of course, VPI and So. Carolina have their warts too.

I see 12 conference win. Personally, I see a lot of parity in the ACC this year; could be very little difference in teams between 3 and 10.

Choppack, how refreshing. There are still sensible posters who have not either fired the coach or put him in the HOF.

I’m sure WV Wolf will be putting up the post game stats soon, but I noticed in NCSU’s two losses, the opposing QBs have managed to complete 43% of their passes for a total of 261 yards.

10 for 27 for 100 yards by a freshman QB on the road. We got beat by that? What’s going to happen when we run up against a team with a seasoned QB that can complete 50% of their passes? Ugh.

Were I a bookmaker, I’d set the over/under for regular season wins at 8. I salute all the fans who are able to look past our historical egg layings…I’m not there yet. I just see several games that are a coin flip for me; momentum swings either way could lay the ground work for a magical season or another ho-hum season of beating up on 4 cupcakes and going .500 in conference.

You can please all the people some of the time, and you can please some of the people all the time; you can’t please all the people all the time. If he was recruiting and signing marginal 2* and 3* guys just to have a warm body to fill out the scholarship allotment, someone would complain. When those marginal players transferred because of a lack of PT, someone would complain. He swung for the fences on some high end recruits and he missed. That sucks. If he has a contingency plan that means getting a marginal 2* or 3* recruit and maybe a transfer or two so we have enough guys for 5 on 5 drills then I’m ok with that. If we go into the ’15-’16 season with 7 scholarship guys and a half a dozen walk-ons I’ll be a little more concerned. Until then, I’ll be one of the wait and see guys.

I didn’t want to derail the wonderful commentary of the “Trevor Lacey going pro thread” with a UNC scandal tangent, so I’m using this entry to link an article on SBNation’s Kentucky site.

    http://www.aseaofblue.com/2015/4/27/8502327/has-north-carolina-reached-the-eve-of-destruction

It’s a pretty good read and at least somebody is talking about it (even if it is a Kentucky blog). There is also a reference to another entry on SB Nation’s Duke Basketball Report:

A friend of my cousin’s wife’s husband works with Ingram’s father. He said if it wasn’t for the impending NCAA sanctions over Carolina, Ingram would be going there. I wasn’t told where Ingram was going, but I found it interesting that their scandal was having a negative impact on recruiting.

Yeah, I went in a convenience store a couple of weeks ago and failed to buy a lottery ticket. I could have been a multi-millionaire. What a huge missed opportunity.

I think Jiggs made it abundently clear why it is unreasonable to have expected this team to have done much more than they did.

Had we beaten a 1 seeded Duke or Kentucky I could see Rick & Rye’s point. But we beat a 1 seeded Villanova; a team the regularly exits the tournament earlier than expected. That didn’t really shock anyone (not like a GM or VCU type upset) so I don’t see how anyone can be disappointed (or call it a missed opportunity) that we as an 8 seed lost to a more talented and HOF coached #4 seed in Louisville. I just don’t get that.

Yogi the negative I’ve experienced with centipede is it’s just not resilient with regard to traffic. When we moved into our house in 2005 we had a good (not great) stand of centipede in the front and back yard. Between the dog and the kids, the back yard is basically only 25% centipede. I’ve still got about 80% coverage in the front yard, but I anticipate the kids’ electric tractor and four wheeler are gonna have that down to 50% by next spring. I’m sure this is common knowledge and I’m not telling you guys anything you don’t already know.
All that said I haven’t done very good with regular maintenance. I’d basically put out weed and feed or fertilizer once a year and I aerated maybe 3 times.
I’ve got some St. Augustines coming in from my neighbor’s front yard and I’m hoping it will really take over everywhere. My laziness really has me leaning to CD’s approach to the lawn.

WRT the garden, I recently planted my okra seeds but haven’t done anything since. I’ll get the old lady to go get me some pepper slips to put in this weekend (habaneros, jalapenos, hot & sweet banana) and I may plant a few lima and/or green beans. Cuc seeds will also go in this weekend weather permitting.
