Caleb Martin was the most pleasant surprise. Lacey has been hyped enough that I wasn’t as surprised by him. Martin’s only weakness is ball handling, but he’s very solid all around for a freshman.

Barber’s three point shot will change the way everybody has to defend us if it holds up.

The bigs, who I’ve been hyping for over a year now, were a big disappointment last night.

The only other downer was FT shooting.

The defensive effort is the best I’ve seen in years from a State team. If we play 9-10 guys all year, we can press enough to cause some real problems for others.

Barber and Lacey really do play well together. They have excellent chemistry.

This is always the most important game of the year since, way out here in Texas, the neighbor over the back fence is a Wake graduate. I have been know to hang the Wolfpack flag over the fence after a win.

More on income inequality. I should have known there had been a “study’ on the subject that got everyone fired up.

We have an excellent at being the least deserving bowl team of 2014. I will gladly accept that honor.

We will find out how serious the committee is about the importance of being a conference champion if a one loss Miss St. makes the playoff ahead of a one loss conference champion.

Hopefully all of the SEC teams finish with at least two losses and they get, rightfully, shutout of the playoff.

Only 10% of boats are seaworthy?

I don’t think I would phrase it quite that way. Some of the boats aren’t as equipped for changing seas as others. The link below is a pretty good example of what I’m talking about. One of the problems I have with the whole income inequality “problem” is that people think it’s indicative of some nefarious activities and that it can’t possibly be the result of the free market.

Income Inequality = Skill Set Inequality * Motivation Inequality

As you can see from the article below lots of hard working, really good people can end up with skill sets that are no longer valuable. Does that make them bad people or mean that it’s their “fault?” (the obsession with finding who is at fault drives me nuts also). Is it somehow the fault of Wall Street that the coal mines are closing? Of course not on both counts. It’s just the way life goes sometimes.

I spent 19 years in the Paper Industry after I got out of NC State with a Pulp & Paper Degree, but the domestic industry was in a steady downward spiral so I reached a point where I had to go somewhere else. I started over making about 35% less than I had before in another industry. It’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. I see resumes all the time from people who put in 6-15 years with one employer before they closed their doors. It takes some of those folks another 10 years to find a good long term landing spot.

One of the main reasons that income growth hasn’t been as equal as it was in the past is the loss of manufacturing jobs. Those jobs provided people whose education ended after high school, or perhaps a tech school, with the opportunity to earn a middle class wage and provide that kind of lifestyle for their families. The “service based economy” that we were told was so much better than the manufacturing economy has proven a disaster for lots of America.

The other reality that becomes obvious, if you think like an economist, is that the American factory worker on average was grossly overcompensated by the time the 1980’s and 1990’s rolled around. There are/were some inequities between countries due to HSE differences, but those only account for a portion of the difference. The short sighted nature of the US corporate management and the US labor unions in the 70’s and 80’s was largely to blame as well.

As for the “rising tide floats all boats” premise, boats that have holes in them, i.e. a lack of appropriate skills and/or knowledge, don’t float as well as other boats that are better equipped for the changes that have taken place in the economy. People have to constantly make sure that they have marketable skills today. They can’t just expect that somebody else is going to provide them with a job to match whatever skills they have.

I am so glad I live in Texas where the Legislature only meets for 90 days every other year. They don’t have time to meddle when they have to get a budget done for the next two years. You should try it in North Carolina.

Lewis filled a role on the team. As a retired (from BB) slow, white, undersized PG, I felt a certain kinship with Tyler but he was a defensive liability. I think when your starter is as wide open as Cat, it’s nice to have a back up who can play a tad more under control. I still think the most important things for this team to learn will be how to post up and how to make a solid entry pass. It’s all about the bigs.

More so than ever, it is a week to week league.

Just a few weeks ago everyone was burying the Patriots and crowning the Broncs. Same for Pitt. And now the Chargers can’t get out of their own way. It is a long haul to the finish line.

The Texans offense, however, is the model of consistency. It sucks every week.

This comment is for beej and others who know the rules.

When Payton was sacked on a play in the third quarter he was hit right at the knees! What happened to the Brady rule where you can’t hit a QB towards the knee area? It was such a blatant call. The defender went right for Manning’s knees!

I didn’t like the rule when they put it in play but it is a rule now. CALL IT!

You answered your own question. It’s not called the Brady Rule for nothing.

I predict Colin Kaepernick’s Canton highlight in the “Hall of Busts” won’t be that QB sneak from yesterday. That was awesome to watch.

I’ve been saying this since early last season. These guys can be dominant. The depth we have inside will allow them to play a tad more aggressively and that will make them even more effective. Frenchie will get serious votes for All ACC this season. What that kid showed at barely 18 years of age last year was amazing. I think he may be the next Richard Howell, only he doesn’t need to shed 89 cheeseburgers at this point in his career like Howell did.

We have had good stretches of run stopping all season. The problem has been giving up too many 20-40 yard runs. Syracuse is no GT in the run game by any stretch, but we are definitely playing better defense. I’ve been as critical of Huxtable as anybody, but maybe he has the defense turning the corner a bit.

I’ll take 6-6 all day long, but it would be so sweet to keep the cheaters out of a bowl and go 7-5.

Yogi – I noticed the manners as well. Kid was in the library studying, not out in his rented SUV with guns and drugs. He’s quite an athlete based on that return.
