Amen. Great post JackWolf! I am a die-hard State fan and Davidson graduate. My father is a State grad as is my younger brother. My hatred of everything Carowhina began in elementary school in the mid-60’s spurred by cruel, obnoxious, condescending UNX fans. I decided at an early age that I would never root for those hypocritical asses wearing baby blue. When Russia came to Chapel Hole in 1980, I said,
“Go Big Red!” and I meant it. I watched the NCAA render swift justice on State in the early 70’s for David Thompson sleeping on the floor of a friend’s room at State basketball camp(a benefit valued at $8.00 per night) and Coach Biedenbach playing in a pickup game with Thompson after Thompson had already signed his Letter of Intent. I think Thompson was also given a ride home to Shelby by an assistant coach. For these violations we were placed on probation for one year and robbed of a chance at a NCAA championship in 1973 when we went 27-0 the year before our NCAA championship in 1974. I stood by in 1989-90 as our Coach Valvano was crucified by the News & Observer and he and our basketball program were unjustly punished by our own administration, by our Tar Hole-centric Board of Governors, and by the NCAA for a smear campaign based on a book of lies by Peter Gollenback and based on jealousy of Coach Valvano’s growing celebrity by Tar Hole journalists at the N & O. The NCAA never substantiated any of Gollenback’s allegations and accepted State’s self-imposed punishment. During these two decades I was asked many times how I could support a bunch of cheaters and told that UNX was the shining light of the NCAA and that all schools should follow the example of UNX to achieve the proper balance of academics and athletics. I also heard many parables and epistles of St. Dean Smith, the paragon of virtue. Now we find out that the Saint himself and his AD, John Swofford established the AFAM program which enabled the great diploma mill of the University of Non Compliance to keep athletes who did not attend classes and did not do their own assignments eligible and win championships. Rather than admitting their transgressions, accepting their punisment and moving on, they have spent $18 million in legal fees over the last 5 or 6 years stalling and delaying any judgment by the NCAA. The NCAA also has been very slow to act while smacking many other programs with strict sanctions during this time. The most widespread and long-standing athletic program academic fraud in NCAA history needs swift justice, and the NCAA should stop nothing short of removing the NCAA championship banners of 1993, 2005 and 2009. Any other school would have probably received “the death penalty” for these circumstances. They will probably get a good wrist slapping and nothing else, but I am holding out hope that the NCAA will grow a pair and do their job for a change. I will continue to despise them and will not root for them for as long as I live. Just watched the game tonight and was very disappointed in the outcome. Remember, cheaters never win except at UNX.Pompous, smug, holier than thou arrogance. That’s my short version. Not enough space to relay my long version!!
I have always liked Lenard. He is a blue collar guy who defends and rebounds well and does not have to score to be happy. He gets most of his points from offensive rebounds. He has been very consistent for us since returning to the rotation and starting lineup. He can be the 8 point 8 rebound guy that every good team has to have–Tim Stoddard and Phil Spence in ’74 and Lorenzo Charles in ’83. Glad to see him getting some props. He and Abu make a nice combination and the four big man rotation of Freeman, Abu, Anya and Washington has become solid. Go Pack!!
So proud of this team for the effort, the attitude and the love. They have come together and stepped up as team at the right time.
Cannot give enough props to Des Lee for his contributions in the last two games. He is a senior who does not want this journey to end. His two timeout calls while he was being tied up in the first half were huge because they kept the possesion arrow with us. This allowed us to keep the ball after Beejay’s monster block\tie up at the end of the first half which of course allowed Lacey the opportunity for the huge three at the first half buzzer. Great, smart senior plays by Des.
Keep it up boys and help Ralston get on a hot streak and the glass slipper will still fit! Channel V and the ’83 Pack and bring home another trophy.Very proud of Lacey for not pulling a Ty Lawson and dunking on the last possession when we already had their asses whipped. Too much class. The Wolfpack way. I wish our 50 fans had stormed the court though:)
UNX response: This is the diabolical work of a rogue congressman who is calling for an investigation by a rogue congress. Why is everybody always pickin’ on me?

Some observations:
1. Purvis sure is close to championships. He decommitted from Louisville to play at State last year and Louisville then won the national championship. He then transferred from State to UConn after his freshman year and UConn wins national championship last night during his redshirt year. I think he gets a ring as a member of UConn team. Is he the next Kemba/Shabaz? Doubt it but we will see.
2. UConn was banned from NCAA tourney last year for graduation rate issues several years ago. UNX is giving away grades in no show classes and diplomas in no show majors for years and nobody in the media will report on this disconnect and the NCAA apparently does not give a damn.
3. ’83 Pack was not as big a Cinderella as reported. That team won six games against teams ranked #1 at some time during the season–UVA twice, UNX twice, UNLV and Houston. When they were healthy, they could beat anyone in the nation.Wow. We suffered through Javi playing all those minutes and dribbling out the shot clock for four years. Now we lose a smart capable point guard due to either unrealistic expectations on his part or a rift with the coaching staff. This is getting old. Gott to start recruiting dedicated 4 year players who are loyal to the program and have a clear understanding of where they stand and what they need to do to increase their position in the rotation.
No play-in team or 12 seed has ever won it all. GOTT to listen to Whitt, channel some Jimmy V and survive and advance!!!! Go Pack!! Very proud of this team. Already have exceeded expectations. Catch fire Buckets and lead us on a deep run.
We continue to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. That is all I can muster after the late trip home last night.
