BTW, the Quadrant system is helping us because we have some good Q1 wins. Use Syracuse as a comparison. Your RPI tracking chart has Syracuse in but the pack at the bottom of the bubble. But a couple of the bracketologists have State in the last 4 in, but Syracuse as just out because we look better.
But in your RPI article you think 9-9 in conference won’t do it for us and I agree. If we get to 10-8, I think we should be in. 9-9 we would need something special in the tournament. Beating Syracuse on the road gives us another Quad 1 win and gives us a head to head against a fellow NCAA bubble team. It also get’s our needed win count down to 3. A Syracuse win does not help them as much since they are home, but it certainly helps them. Let’s hope we win tonight or we will have to win 4 of the last 5.

UNCG is almost a Q2 loss. Pull for them to improve to 75 RPI or better. Helps to get rid of a bad loss.

    And according to freshment 83, I am a Q4.

I agree BJD, I think we have 3 capable QB’s. So if one stumbles, we, the peanut gallery, will be in loud voice.
And this team should be good, but with the ACC improving, we have one hell of a schedule. ECU, WF, BC and Cuse are must wins for us to just go 6 & 6.

Then again, if the big Turk joins us and Abu stays we will be loaded this year, and there are names kicked around that can come in the following year. Gott could pull a rabbit out of his hat and somehow turn the ship around. This is a dicey game going after the top players with the big boys. He’s brought in two new recruiters, maybe this whole list of haters chewing his ass is for nothing. But I’m afraid he’s gotta do it now or it’s over for him, and our competitors are surely using this churn against him with the recruits. That said, the guy that brings in more 3 stars and low 4 stars would have a steadier program, just not much chance of winning a championship. The grass always looks greener, curious to know who we could get.

So, we have 8 guys going to the nationals, 4 as ACC Champions. The announcers were talking about our chances for the whole thing. NCSU is still young and should be quite competitive going forward. One announcer expressed that you need to win 3 or 4 individual championships for your team to win the National Championship. That sounds like a crazy lot for one team but I guess if the Iowa’s and Penn States are recruiting the very best every year, maybe they do that.
The pack has one very likely champ in Gwiazdowski as he is the reigning champion x2.

Jack was an all American last year (I think that means top 5 finish) so he has a shot. Gantt also could make some noise. What we need is all 8 to win early and accumulate some team points for us. The fact that we had such a great dual meet records indicates our guys can beat strong opponents and pull some upsets. So you never know.

But most of our wrestlers are Freshmen and Sophs so this team is going be getting better.

Tuned in near the end of the consolation finals and had the same fun switching between the two ESPN3 streams. Watched all of the finals. Great job men.
Gwiz sure put a scare into me in the last period letting the VT wrestler shoot so deep – twice! The tourney was already won but I did not want to seem him lose. As it was, he quickly manhandled the guy and put up another 2 points at then end. Maybe he was never in as much jeopardy as I though he was.

I guess to clarify my point I believe 3 point shooting from Caleb and Rowan is the one thing that could have made this team different, the biggest weakness.
Our blowout at UVA – at one point UVA 6-9 from 3, NCSU 1-9 from 3. That’s a 15 point difference. It’s been hard to watch this team. Hard to hear announcers talking about States poor shot selection when they not bad shots, we just missed open 3’s. In the UVA game, I did hear the women announcer actually say State was getting the shots it wanted but missing them. So at least she did not piss me off as much as most of the loud mouth prognosticators.
Think how if affects the game overall. One thing defenses did not want to do with the likes of Wood or Turner is let them have an early open 3. Because they might hit those at a 60% rate. Hit a couple, and then the shot selection and makes start coming from a fast break, of 5 feet beyond the arch, or while covered. You let a guy get hot and he makes them from everywhere.
Defenses do not have as much pressure to worry about Caleb who never gets so hot that you think everything he shoots will go in. And Rowan has only shown that a couple times this season. So with the 3 less of a threat from those two, guys that are not going to go off and beat them, they can focus on Cat and the inside game. We are just missing that piece of the puzzle.

“This team is not one player away from being something special.”

True, Who knows what Henderson would bring. The real issue is the percent chance of Caleb and Rowan hitting the open 3. It’s too low. If one of those guys gets on a hot streak, we are competitive, if both, we could be “something special” but after a whole season of waiting I realize, their hot streaks are few and far between. There is no slump that is going to end. It is what it is. Maybe they will be better draining 3s next year. As it is, I’m hoping but not really expecting, beyond one game. Go watch Scott Wood highlights and dream of next year.

Fergus, I get your point because in general, the team with the best players wins. Looking at several rankings, we had several borderline 3/4 guys and Moss was not our best. That D lineman and the new receiver both look to be better. My counter point was, with less playing time to offer, it looks like DD did a solid job. And, I see the consensus above is, the product on the field needs to start looking better, to keep and build on the momentum. I don’t think this class really lost ground as compared to the other two.
I expect next year’s defense to be very strong. We lose Rose – great but we have equal guys filling his spot, and two D backs. Those guys were solid but as much as the backfield was complained about, the experience of another year for the rest of the squad, and more height coming in, hopefully the backfield will improve. Everyone else returns.
Unless we have a disaster in the QB situation – Coach13 – more than one guy flops – The offense also will be solid. I’m worried as much about the O-line as the QB. We lost 3 starters there. And a TE.
    Go Pack

P.S. I was looking at Scout. Luke DeCock was looking at 247 composite which had Duke above UNC and NCSU 9th in ACC. None the less, I think the class was solid. Need a good season and a good haul of recruits next year to keep it going.

Fergus and PackofMac, DD had been a solid recruiter. His first couple classes when he could promise playing time were very good. Without that much to promise, except maybe at certain positions, he still brought in a class rated in the top 50. Not great but solid. Look at O Brian’s last two classes. In the 60s or 70’s I think. If this can be the low end of DD’s recruiting, we will be a top 35 team year in and year out. Stay that solid, and recruits take notice and then you make a climb into a top 25 year after year, make another climb and the team would be where we all dream they would be. Duke’s class came in about 30 this year and I think it speaks to the reputation that was slowly built there. I believe DD will do the same. Unfortunately that other team, whether from name recognition, or the fact you don’t have to take classes, never needs a great effort to get a good haul. We will always have to out work them.
This year we are a bit behind Louisville but better than VT, VA, Maryland (yea I know), Syracuse, WF, GT and BC. Oh and ECU was way down the list at 87. If (maybe if should be capitalized) this is our low end then we will do very well. If it’s a beginning of a downward trend, then we are in trouble. But looking at the energy DD puts into recruiting, I think we are good. If the QB play is solid this year we are going to surprise some teams.

On discussing Gottfried, disagree with some of what was said. The biggest issue is Gottfried’s recruiting. You can miss out on some key guys, but you need to have those other guys too. How can we only have 9 scholarship players. With one hurt and most of the team being young, this team is in trouble.
But as to “maybe that’s who State is” as in not a power name in basketball, no the rise of the other teams show that’s not true, especially in basketball, A great coach should get the kids he needs at just about any location, especially the ACC.
I’ll give coach a pass this year but next year’s team is not going to be any better, A freshman Smith verses a Junior Cat is the only difference, unless he brings in more guys.

I try to watch all the ACC games and most of the big games outside the conference. Don’t know why folks bitch about lots of football to watch. But the only losing records that make sense would be a 6-6 team that lost their Championship game – AKA UCLA. Hey, the Panthers made the playoffs last year with a losing record. They were worthy.

Next Year’s QB? I think the hype out of camp was that the true freshman was pushing the Redshirt Freshman. I hope that’s because they both are ACC caliber. But they are DD’s type QBs so I trust they will be.
Of bigger concern is losing 3 starters off the O line. We will have the two right tackles back as sophomores, I assume one plays LT or LG. Tony Adams will be a Jr. I assume he takes the Center job. Bryce Kennedy, Garret Bradbury have had some starts and good game time experience but look out guys, this is the group taking the longest to rebuild and if the QB and O line don’t get it done, I can hear the squealing getting louder.
I think all other parts of the team are going to be damn good. But I’m pro DD because of his recruiting. I think he’s still learning as a coach and did not have the team and playbook ready for Lu and VT. But he’s a smart guy and will learn from it. I see the results of the depth everywhere but at O line, that’s what scares me for next year. But I’m gonna give the man more than next year to build the program. It’s will take years, and if we keep bowling, were on the right path. Out of Conference schedule is tougher from now on. Bowl eligibility will be harder.

My view has always been you rise in steps. Gott’s success is now opening doors for more higher level players to see the Pack as an option. He may have down classes but I expect the overall recruiting classes to continue to rise. This past year was tough but he sure salvaged it by brining in a few athletes. This next class may become a juggernaut. 2017 looks promising. So as in football, I think the next couple of classes will “raise the bar”.

Great reminder of past games. Here’s one at the top, in the 30 year window. And considering recent events, gives a shout out to Eric Kramer.
SC at State in 1986. We started the 2nd 1/2 with good lead but SC powered their way back. Two field goals (defense led by Ray Agnew and company holding on but no help from offense) and TD by SC. And then we throw a pick, they get a another TD +2 to take 6 point lead. We trade possessions and get the ball back near their 40 off a poor punt with 33 seconds left. And then on what looked to be the last play of the game, their D linemen jumps over the O line and pulls down Kramer, replay clearly shows he’s offsides and jumps early. One last play, untimed because no time on the clock, hail Mary to Danny Peoples in traffic. Big Time WIN!

Yes but after redshirting a year, Dorn will be in the same class as Kirk and Rowan. I like seeing it this way better.

Sorry Wufpacker, I had to think about that one too hard.

I read one review that said Papagiannis was a one and done type player. If that’s true, I assume he is going to do more than provide depth. I would expect he would cut back on Anya’s minutes severely. I like Anya as much as the next guy but unlike some, I don’t think he will be NBA ready after his junior year. He’s still got to change his body and learn to be a force all the time on the court. But if we get Papa, we will have a much stronger front court than last year, with possibly 3 future NBA’rs to go along with the 1/2 dozen wings (sorry, lost count), and one great point guard.
I say much stronger front court than last year because
    1. I expect Freeman, due to his youth to continue to improve at a good pace, 2. Abu to pick up where he left off at the end of the year, and then some, as that jump from Freshman to Sophomore year generally proves.
    3. Anya, I sure hope he is continuing to reform his body. We have not heard the reports this year like last year but I am assuming he is fighting to get better.
    4. Papa, is bigger than Washington and has been playing tough competition, playing full games and has been expected to score.
Papa and Abu as the starting two would be very strong. And great depth from Freeman and Anya, both capable of being starters. But, since I think the team would be so great, I just know it can’t happen, so I’ll dream while I can.

Thought I’d add something new to the conversation that has not been discussed.
When V was coaching NCSU had a reputation that was about equal to the best teams in the country. Any possible recruits knew here was a team that had just won two national championships. When V left we had 10 ACC championships, UNC had 10, and Duke only had 7. Twenty-five years later, possible recruits would not list NCSU as equal to KY, UNC, Duke, Kansas. With the changing landscaper (1 and dones), the haves seem to have separated themselves even more than back 30 years ago. It will take a few years of regularly making the tourney and competing with and beating Duke and UNC before recruits see NCSU as a top tier program. I for one am one of these who “fail to see the issue” with Gott because I do not think there is an issue. He has done incredibly well in turning around the NCSU perception and if he continues at the pace he is on, better players will come and kids will see us as one of the top programs again.
The only way to turn it around quicker is to have instant name recognition with a top tier coach. I’m not sure Archi Miller or even Shaka from VCU could do that. I think Gott is building his name and this program. For those that don’t, I hope you have big bucks to give to the Wolfpack club, because they will need it to bring in a “perceived” top 10 coach.
I think if Gott is here when Roy and K retire, our programs will be near the same footing at that is about all we can ask for.
