I would take a loss tonight and then win 5 straight including UNC and @ Pitt in a heart beat. Two top 50 wins in our pocket and a road loss against a solid team. If we did that we might pass Pitt in conf standings. 5th gets you the winner for #12 vs 13 seed and then 4 seed on Friday. I just reviewed the Tourney format. A win on Friday will count a lot. It will be against a top 50 team. There are no easy games on Friday (except the top 4 seeds may have one).

So I still say going 5-1 gets us in no matter who the loss is to. It’s solid play and 1 or 2 top 50 wins. Then a must win on Thursday. 4-2 is bubble.

13OT I agree with you on the basic concept regarding 6 teams but I think it comes down to RPI and top 50 wins. 5-1 and we don’t flop in the Thursday game, were in. So if we lose to the kittys we better beat Pitt and those A$$heals. 4-2 and the two losses are to UNC and Pitt (worst case of the 4-2 outcome) we have to win Thur and Friday, and probably Sat to get a good RPI win. Go 9-9 in conference and we’ll just have to win the ACC Tournament. At least we think it’s possible after staying with Cuse.

So beat Clemson tonight and then pull for them to go on a winning spree to up their RPI. I don’t think it’s us vs them for the Tourney, it’s RPI, and theirs sucks worse, but they have that Duke win. Of course if both teams are at that last in, first out point, then it is sort of us vs them. Damn, I thought I knew where we stood.

Thanks for the 1/4 speed. I don’t know the rules well enough to determine if it was a continuation or not, but it sure looked like a broken tackle which Warren ran through for the game winning TD.
F1 two shots and the ball.

If the refs had at least looked at it again, and I think they should have, coach could have worked the inbounds play a little better.

When we were figuring out how to get to the dance, this was the least expected win. Were still on track although it is up hill. 5-1 in but should win on Thurs in Tourney, 4-2 bubble, need to win Thursday and Friday to be sure.
But, on step at a time. We need to win at Clemson, and then get it done at VT.

But I gotta say, if letting them play is best for the end of the game then why even call the foul on Warren’s shot. That call did nothing but hurt us.

I’ve been hoping with the rest of you for a better coach since Jimmy V was run off by the press. We went through 3 mediocre coaches and 20 rough years.
But I was speaking of referees and games. Crap happens and calls are missed for all teams.
    But
I will not deny that the conference administration has looked the other way while UNC has blatantly padded players grades. And this is as bad a method of cheating as recruiting violations but it is not treated that way. One of the big attacks on Jimmy V by the press was a period of time where no players were graduating. If we had done it the Carolina way, they would have graduated.

Yes I do think we will get there and we are doing it the right way.

Leave the ACC, you guys are nuts!
I’m going to say it now and get attacked but, NC State S#!+ is all in your heads and ACC conspiracies are too.
What you guys have witnessed is breaks tend to go to the teams with the best players and best coaches. With a great coach and great players and a lot of momentum we won it all in 83.

As Wulfpack pointed out, a changing of the guard in coaching is coming but we know Duke, UNX and Cuse will continue to be high profile teams when it comes to recruiting. But the pack belongs up there and now that we have a coach I think we will build back that reputation. Gott is certainly building our recruiting profile. And as these young players gain experience, they will make close games go our way more and more. And they are learning strong defense without fouling. We’ll get there.

You can “what if” that play all you want. Anthony could have held the ball 5 seconds and we would at least set up a defense, or better yet, hold the ball 4 sec and bounce if off a knee. But the kid was trying to do the right thing and move the ball. We are better than the start of conference play and will get better. That was one aggressive trapping defense the last minute and we almost survived it.

I don’t blame the players, our coach, the refs or NC State $#!+. It just didn’t go our way. Hopefully we get some back these last 6 conference games and tourney games. And yes, although continuation to the basket is more prevalent in the pros, I thought Warren’s shot should have counted. But I don’t think the call was part of a conspiracy. And yes I was calling BS on the 2nd half foul discrepancy, but practical reasons for that discrepancy have been discussed. If I say more, the trolls will attack.

It was great to see Washington come out of his slump. He was awesome last night. Yes he deserves his minutes. Some were bashing him last week.

One last though that will wake up the trolls, but this is a late post so it won’t be read by many. I’m tired of the whole NC State $#!+ shtick anyway.
I think all teams have things go their way and go against them. The less talent a team has probably the more breaks go against it. Better players can make things happen. I think as Gott and DD bring in better and better players, the breaks will go our way more often.

But if you believe in fate, then the 83 team used up 30 years of it and now we should get back to normal. Just saying….

Anyway, Hell yes the team has improved, yes we had a chance last night and some of us said so before the game and yes we have a chance to make the tournament although it has been and is a long shot. I think 4-2 does it because of the last 2/3rd of the conference play. A Tourney win on Thursday is a must and a Friday win also if we don’t get a top 50 RPI win in regular season.

yea it would have been better to have held the ball 5 sec. They would have to throw it in.

But guys, we have improved. We just need to go 4-2 the rest of the way.

NO WAY, do I think we have regressed. Of course I have watched for signs of improvement and may therefore see things that aren’t there but I don’t think so. I said the wake game could tell the tale. It sure looked like improvement. We have won 5 of the last 6.

And if you expect someone to go back to the mean, does that mean that players do not improve. That’s BS. You know they improve the most over the course of the season. But one game is not evidence of anything. I will say that Turner’s 3 point shooting did take a while to get going but I don’t expect him to go back to pre-conference averages. And TJ may be getting more comfortable from the 3. Confidence is everything. We’ve had a lot of practice against good zones since conference play began. I think we are getting better there as well although we are all afraid of how we will stack up against Cuse’s zone.
This game may also be an indicator of improvement. Can we not lose to a good team in the first 10 minutes, and make a run near the end?

RPIs for a team change for two reasons, 1, it was way off in the beginning, example NCSU #1 in conf last year, 2, the team improved or regressed. There is no way to really know at the start of the season so the best analysis is the final RPI. But the selection committee should consider evidence such as a young team improving or a key player being lost (for win value, not if a team should qualify). I think the games at the end of the season say the most and should count the most. Let’s just keep playing strong. I think it’s great that we still have a chance. 5-2 we are in, 4-3 and we are bubbling up.

hpack, you have it about right. Maybe we only need 1 win in tourney at 10-8 w no big wins, but assuming that 1 win is not a big, then, yea, two wins, because that second win will finally be our big win. Or we could get lucky and the selection committee realizes we are better than FSU and Clemson and does not want to stick the ACC w only 5 teams. Personally I think they would love to shaft the ACC.
I think we need to win at Clemson and at Pitt on our way to 11-7.
But this was a long shot a week ago. We expected to win the last two so going 4-3 is still a bit of a long shot. Going 5-2 will take some real gutsy performances.

Well, even with all the RPI discussion, it still looks like going 10-8 in conference is bubble with some work to do in the tourney and 11-7 should be in.
But, per above, it would be better if that 10-8 (4-3 rest of way) came with a win against Cuse, UNX or Pitt and a loss against one of the others, then to beat all the others and lose those 3.

Washington should end up quicker/more versatile, better than Painter. And if Freeman becomes half the man Howell was, and I think he can, we are solid at Power Forward for a few years.
But we need their best of the year these next 8, 11, 14 games.
We have not seen improvement from that position, nor from the 5 position in during this 4/5 win streak.

Some of you guys want Gott to coach with a moneyball strategy. This man means 1.8 more points but .4 less rebounds, based on 50% shooting, that’s still 1 point better per 40 minutes therefore he should get more playing time than that man. I’m not sure how that works in basketball.
It’s probably a lot more feel. I think it’s figure out who is hot today and get them the ball. But yea coaching is a bear of a job. I blow clock management in little league football games.

But yes Washington is in a slump. He needs to move in a little and not shoot from just inside the arch. Like a slumping 3 point shooter, get something easier to get your shot going. But as to a greater upside over freeman, who knows, the kid is just barely 18.

And someone besides Warren has to be able to take the ball inside against the zone!

Yep, we started the home stretch on the road and this is it. We need to be 8-6 when UNC comes to town, and then beat them or Pitt and Miami and BC.
Maybe there’s not much chatter today because this task is about impossible and the Football Recruiting news offers more hope.
Hope goes down hard. I’ll be hanging on every game.

Additionally – 11-7 vs 10-8 vs 9-9 is not just about our conference record. It’s about what the wins and losses that it will take for the pack to achieve the conference record and what it would do for our RPI. 11-7 means no bad or even medium losses and a top 40 RPI Win along with 6 other good wins. It would be very tough to do.
10-8 means going 6-3, either a top 40 win or no losses to our peers and the bottom dwellers. This also is looking very tough. The door is closing, our boys either have to kick it in or get out of the way.
May they fight to the end. Go Pack

I understood what you meant by UNC and FSU as undecided if they would join the top or not. It clearly shows that UNC is trending upwards and I believe they will hold the 5th spot if not climb above Pitt. Key games for them are us, and Pitt, @ FSU and their games against Duke, especially the home game. They would need 3 of those 5 to climb higher.

As to the Wolfpack, I believe 11-7 gets us in, 10-8 is a high bubble, 9-9 no way. So we must win the middle and bottom games. Lose just one and we have to beat @Syr, UNC or @Pitt. To get to 11-7, we have to win all others and one of the those 3. I don’t think a strong tourney can help us at 9-9, unless maybe the finals combined with a strong RPI win or two.

That said, I think we need the win at Pitt, and I’m worried about UNC.

tjfoose1, you are so correct. I have always said that is an issue in NC. South Carolina has two schools. We have 5 that compete for the best. 5 of 20, 9 of 30, 15 of 50 is damn good for a second year coach that did not win a conference game.

We did take in 5 of top 20, so that is 25%. Maybe 1/3 is closer than I think. So I count a total of 33, 9 in early and 24 more.

Charger17, I think 1/3 to 1/2 half of the top 15 in NC is unrealistic until we have a FSU/Clemson type reputation. Even those silly blues can’t pull that off.
And I would be curious to see how many of the top 15 Florida recruits went to FSU. But Dave is bringing in 15 of the top 50 which is an improvement and I do expect In-State-Recruiting to continue to improve. Dave has said that is a big part of his focus since day 1.

But if all goes well, we will be 4-0 going into the FSU game and healthy. At the end of the season when (example) we are 7-5 (3-5 ACC) we’ll go bowling and be better prepared for next year. Next year, we need a better OOC schedule. Is ND next year or 2016?

If we beat GT and FSU, we rise to the top of Slim Chance and maybe to Maybe. But how can we advance from there or stay there. Win at Miami, home WF, at Clemson, at VT, UNC home, Miami Home, BC home. In other words, if we win all but at UNC, Cuse, at Pitt we go 11-7 and have a chance to make it. 10-8 might make it but…. And nothing less will.

I guess part of our upward rise beyond beating MD is that the three teams that stomped us are all on the rise. If we beat FSU we may see the peak of our rise. Unless we keep winning against the bottom and middle.
