Thanks Roo – all I did was scroll to the Sat night listings and it showed on cable channel 12, whatever station that is. Just as channel 5 (WRAL) is shown on 3, whateever station that actually is is shown on 12.

I did not think to look at 1215 but good to know as I would prefer in HD. Had no idea that 12 would be SD.

Now how can I root for us to go 11-1????? I would love it but the thought of anyone running nekkid thru campus frightens me.

I think we have something we have not had in a long time, and that is some speed and depth at key positions.

The D came on strong last year and I expect even more improvement this year. We lost some key guys on the line but our depth is good and new guys ready to step in. Our LB’s will be strong and secondary should be as well.

We rarely play well in Tallahassee but we always play Klempsun tough in CF. I think if we beat Louisville, and I think a good chance in CF for the home conference opener, we have a good chance of splitting FSU/Klempsun. If we lose to Louisville, I think we lose both of these others.

VTech is always a tough game but I think our D will be enough to hold them down and hope we get some quick scores on them to force them to play catch up.

Summary – I beleive L is the pivotal game to determine the fate of the season. Win L and I think 10-2 is a good possibility even if the 2 are FSU and Klempsun. Lose to L, and I think it could snowball to VT as well and 8-4 is a distinct possibility.

We WILL break the hold in WS and Chestnut Hill this year and no way UNX beats us in our house.

I was in school with Erik and casual friends but not tight. He always had a great attitude and was proud to have him as a part of the Pack family.

The article I read did say his concussions had a role in this. Also, his son died of a drug overdose shortly after a divorce. His ex wife said there is no doubt his head injuries contributed to his change in demeanor, which is what ultimately led to the divorce. She was quoted as saying they would still be married if not for the damage caused by the head injuries. Erik has had a lot in his plate in the last few years.

On the positive side, he is recovering from non-life threatening injuries, and we can all pray he receives the help he needs.

Congrats to 17 – there is no classier individual in the game and I am thrilled for him. I believe he does have a few good years left but I also believe his best years were wasted.

I know the fans in SD love him as well, just as much for his off the field as on the field and it is nice to see him rewarded.

Is he a shooting guard (SG) or power forward (PF)? Seems a contradiction.

As I read, he seems like a shooter – we had Scott Woo and then we had BSW. Can we call Maverick Woo Jr? Hopefully we plays some defense so we can add the D back to the name.

Good pick-up though, and I am happy to see him on board. Now if we can just keep him out of the jetwash.

Wow, watched the entire game and was still leery at 4-1 but when we made it 8-1 I thought for sure we had this one in the bag. Total collapse by all.

I am not a skipper fan BUT during the collapse I wondered how many here would point the finger at number 9. CD, I only have one beef with the skip – albeit in hindsight a big one. The collapse/choke was totally on the players.

Here is where 9 messed up – in the 10th, one out, runners on 2nd and 3rd, YOU WALK THE BATTER TO LOAD THE BASES AND SET UP THE FORCE AT HOME OR BETTER YET THE DOUBLE PLAY! By not walking the batter, the infield must play in, and makes it easier to find a hole. Sure enough, I think the winning hit could have been a double play grounder to second if the infield is at double play depth. The fact the team was in that position was still completely on the players – but that final play could have had a different outcome.

I have been worried about that since January or so. Lack of PT for someone who deserved it. It is the one thing I don’t like about Gottfried. You can’t sit players like that on the bench and expect them to stay. I felt like he was the best offensive big we had. I wish Yow would sit Gott down and tell him to stop losing top notch players.

Another thing, as we develop a history of not giving players PT, it will make recruits think twice.

Walton, he was our best offensive big, but what did we lose on the D side with Kyle in the game? I hate to see him go as well, but as I said in my rambling post, maybe the signs he exhibited in practice led to him not playing more. We dont know. Maybe the coaches gave him specific things to work on and he told them where they could put their suggestions. We just dont know all the details, except we all have opinions on who deserves PT and who does not.

New post to tack on to the previous. let’s take the case of Kyle. At 6’9″ in HS, he had a huge advantage over his competition and could probably score at will. He did not have to play D because his size was a dominant factor, likely going against a guy 4-5 inches smaller on most games. He could get by with D simply by being bigger and his weakness was not exposed.

This is a kid who STARTED 18 games this year as a sophomore, but started 25 as a freshman. It’s not like he did not have an opportunity to show what he could do. When he lost his starting position, we started playing better as a team. Freeman did a great job on D, rebounding, and being a glue guy. Kyle sees his time diminishing, so what is he thinking? He better score more – after all how can coach keep him out of the game if he is scoring? So he shoots almost every time he gets it, sometimes scoring, sometimes not, and taking bad shots. Meanwhile, getting toasted on D and rebounding, the case for more PT is not being helped. At this point, there are 2 choices – keep shooting, or work my butt off in practice to show I can play D and can rebound.

We dont know what happened in practice. We dont know what his attitude was – was he sulking or was he supporting those working harder? Maybe the lesser playing time was a result of practice time or an attitude adjustment wake up from the coaches.

I am sorry to see Kyle go, but let’s look at the future. He spent 2 years here, and wants more PT (who doesn’t). So he is leaving, and how much PT will he get next year? Oh yeah, NONE because he is sitting out. If he goes to a similar D-1 program, history will repeat itself with the same issues and nothing is resolved. If he goes to a smaller school D-1AA, the talent level is such that it wont make a big difference. A D-2 school, and then he really falls off the radar.

So what has he gained by leaving? Nothing, except maybe a reputation that he ran when the going got tough. Lacey is leaving for the pros because he sat out a year and is 23 and will be 24 next year as a senior – better get out now while I can. KW will be in the same situation, a 5th year player for his 2nd year on another team. Learning a new system, new coaches, and trying to fit in chemistry wise are not benefits.

The best solution is to wake up and look in the mirror and put in the effort it takes to improve your own game. But back to my previous post, the kids today are not willing to do that – they have never had to. They dont know how to. And most of all, the “people” they are listening to are giving them bad advice, filling their heads with what they want to hear, not what they need to hear. This is why kids are transferring, and many here want to blame Gott?

Examples – Lewis (dad), Purvis (mom and AAU), Harris (dad) Raymond, TDT, Harrow, and the list goes on. Rare, very rare exceptions does a transfer play out well. We GOTT very lucky with Lacey and Turner but for the most part in most cases a transfer is a lose/lose for the old school and the new school. Kids transferring is not always a reflection on the coach – I would say in most cases it is a reflection of the kid and his “supporters”.

I have read the posts and bit my tongue but finally giving in.

I hate it Lacey is leaving BUT………the kid is leaving to make a living playing a game, probably overseas but still going to make more than any (or most) of us to play a game. Good for him, bad for us, but life goes on. You never know – how many times did we stand around and wait for TL to create something? We played well against MD last year without TJ for a game and we played well the one game this year TL was out.

As far as the transfers go, this is really where I have bit my tongue. I understand transfers look bad, and we can argue until we are red in the face about how transfers reflect on the coach. No one mentioned that Dook and K also average about a transfer per year and no one is saying K is finished because of one and dones.

WHY do players transfer? Or more specifically, WHY do players transfer out of NC State? Rather than the obvious of PT, let’s look at the reality of college basketball today. I read somewhere that approximately 40% of players today will transfer or leave early. While that number seems high to me, it was from a reputable source and study. In my ever so humble and often wrong opinion, players transfer because expectations were not met, and the next point becomes whose expectations?

A player recruited to a D-1 program like NC State is a high level athlete, not just a good athlete, but an elite. The kid who can light up cross town rival high school for 20 a game does not get a sniff at this level. The kid is an elite athlete, pampered at every level, but more importantly, has been told he is the man, the star, the one always put on a pedestal. Now, put that kid in college where he is equal to everyone else, and all of a sudden, now he has to WORK in practice, WORK in the offseason, and continually improve his game. As an 18 year old, pampered through school and AAU, now all of a sudden he is not starting? What are the boys back home saying? What are the parents saying? Who has the kid’s ear?

Everyone back home is saying he is getting a raw deal, he is better than the guys starting in front of him. The kid listens, develops an attitude of “you are right” and it creates dissension on the team, chemistry issues. Go back and read the posts from Nov-Jan and many here talked about chemistry issues, who had the ball at crunch time, who was not passing to who and so on.

One of the hardest things in life is going from “the man” to one who has to pay his dues and wait his time. Kids today are not willing to do so. We live in an society that demands instant gratification and college basketball is no exception. I could go on but have rambled enough.

I’m concerned about possible mid-air collisions with all of these searches going on. If Barnes moves to Knoxville he can save on wardrobe costs by continuing to wear orange stuff that has UT on it. Gott’s name will surface in one of these for sure. Especially if we win one or two more games.

Texpack, I am not that concerned about Gott leaving. Either of those programs would be a step down IMO and I think Gott is happy here to be building the program he is.

It is an honor to be considered and money always comes into play, but I cant see TX or TN giving him significantly more than we are. But I hope we win a few more games and his stock rises!

Same here StateFans, the whole reason I started the thread. Someone at CBS and NCAA must have called the zebras and told them to call it tight. 4 fouls in the first 3 minutes, including 2 on their best player in that time frame………..sound familiar?

HWSNBN must have some compromising photos of Bilas somewhere. Anyone remember the pics of Reggie Love? Maybe Bilas was in on those.

OK, so the zebras call it tight and no chance. Actually glad they are calling it the way a game should be called but this is one I want both teams to lose.

Agreed it is UGLY the way they play and I remember well the beating we took when the refs would not blow the whistles. And watching them rough up MD (dont even wish that on MD) was a joke. If I had to place a wager on the game, I take KY every time but just hoping maybe they can throw them off their game and get in their heads a bit.

SWEET! I stayed away during the last 2 games, because when I am here during the games it seems we do worse. I do not believe in superstition but why mess with something that works. I wore the same shirt last night also that I did Thursday.

Great game, great effort, and props to a team that never gave up. They fought, they built the lead, and they held on. Only once was I even concerned and that was when Hilliard hit the 2nd NBA deep 3 late – the looks on our guys faces were down and shoulders slumped. Went to a TO and they came out ready to go, even in spite of the turnover from Lacey.

Gott has done a fantastic job with this team. I dont think he is done yet as even when the season ends, there is more work to be done to continue molding this group together. But here is what I want to say and you can say what you will about Gott – ONLY 3 coaches in ACC history have taken their teams to NCAA in each of their first 4 years, and Gott is one of the 3. In the 20 years before Gott, we had been to the NCAA 5 times, yes only 5 times out of 20. We are now 4-4 with Gott.

Sorry BassPacker, I have to disagree. Yes, LSU missed some shots at the end, BUT we came through when we had to. We never quit, never gave up, and earned the win by being tough.

I want to say a big part of the missed shots came because of the pressure we put on. The comeback and the constant attack added to the pressure, and we made the shots when we had to. We WON that game.

I did not think UCLA should have been invited but I always liked Alford so glad to see them advance, especially since SMU is coached by Larry Brown. Alford’s kid was 9-11 on 3’s in this game.

WOW UCLA with the upset too. Goaltending on a 3 point shot – how often do you see that?

One interesting point About Arch – heard him on the radio Monday. The host asked him specifically about other jobs and how he approached them, and his answer was stunning. The host tried to lead him down the road of “you are an up and coming star and you will have offers from bigger and more prestigious schools.

Archie’s answer was basically I dont care, I am happy where I am and I am not looking to leave. He added, “I made a commitment to these kids and we are a family, and I am planning on being their coach.” He went on to say there is more to life than money and status and his word and commitment is worth more than status/money.

I have always like Archie, and yes I have been critical of people wishing him to come here. Nothing personal against Arch but I just dont like seeing people lobbying for another coach given our current status.

CBS right now has us a 10 against St Johns (7) as others have posted, and with a win against Wisconsin, the #2. That is also the bracket where KY is #1 – talk about a tough draw.

Lunardi has us as a 9 against 8 Ohio St, wiht Nova looming on the horizon. Just for kicks, Lunardi also has UNX as a 4 in the Duke 1 bracket. I did not think conference schools could play in a regional earlier than a regional final, and a 1/4 would be a semi-final. Those types of matchups are always what makes the seedings interesting and you will hear the experts say so and so got moved up or down a notch to accommodate the rules.

Ironically in the FSU/UVA game, the FSU center Bojanovsky crashed to the floor during a rebound and FSU started a break. The stripes blew the whistle immediately and stopped the FSU fast break. I thought it was odd they would stop play – it was FSU’s break and to their disadvantage so I thought the refs would let it go. It’s not like Boj was in the line of fire.

So when Cat got leveled, play goes on. The difference was now Duke had the advantage and they let it go. For consistency, had Jefferson hit the floor would play have been stopped as it was in FSU/UVA?
