I seem to recall Saban being opposed to fast pace of play and proposing the 10 second rule. β€œPlayer safety” was his concern

Shouldn’t be many complaints from Bama fans on this given the number of Booth Reviews. Damn, just fake an injury like the old days. πŸ™‚

Conference finish may be more skewed than normal with such a talented group of teams this year. Either way, there is enough here to have this team as a solid top-25 squad. Given so many new pieces, I do think there would be a greater likelihood of that happening next year rather than this year, but at some point you have to part ways and stop saying wait til next year.

I think at the end of the season I (personal statement here) will have sufficient information to make a well-informed decision on his ability to achieve longer-term success. I said early on that a 6th place finish in the ACC would be solid. I wouldn’t bet on that currently. πŸ™‚

So if it were me running the show, I would be getting things in order now to put ourselves in the best position to make a solid hire in the no too distant future (something I don’t think we’ve done previously).

That the quality of our practices is a point of discussion, much less debate, is proof that we’re truly grasping at straws to explain the total shellacking we took on Sunday.

Bottom line, it is Gott’s responsibility to get them fully physically and mentally prepared to to perform once they cross the “white line”. I’m going to go out on a limb and say he fell short against Carolina.

I may have missed it, but I’m curious what more knowledgeable basketball minds saw in the 2nd half that said we made the significant, much less, the appropriate adjustments (x’s and o’s) to effectively compete with Carolina.

Maverick and I saw that last play the same way as the defender seemed to be trying to hug the receiver.

While I wasn’t shocked they won, I was expecting Watson to press too hard and throw a pick at the end of the game.

Kudos to him for staying cool after the way he got knocked around and then taking it to the Bama Defense.

All of this holiday tradition talk got me thinking about stockings. My wife’s family was pretty old school. Simple knit stockings with an orange, some nuts, and maybe a piece of candy or two. The orange was then used for dinner (and maybe the nuts too).

With 7 kids and not much money, my parents didn’t do much for stockings (although my Dad always found a way to make Christmas a HUGE deal), but I swear if we got oranges and nuts, then us 5 boys would have ended up hurling them at each other and smashing something that shouldn’t have been.

Chop, I completely agree with your sentiment. I also believe that this squad will fall short of that. I am sticking with a 6th place finish until I see results on the floor that say otherwise.

Bumping this back to the top. Is there any chance we could get a basketball poll on where we finish in the ACC standings (or record)? Given our play to date, some of us may be rethinking our original predictions. πŸ™‚

Fruitcake and Eggnog are two things I would never buy in the store, but will always try if homemade.

Maybe it has to do with the alcohol, or maybe it has to do with some things just being better when made in the kitchen.

p.s. I do consider myself very sensitive to and aware of others (I draw a distinction between that and being PC), but I laughed at the story about the old woman. Sorry, but funny is funny!

It sure helps to have your opponents do well (and we should say extra prayers for them too), but I hope our postseason hope don’t come down to these four OOC games and their respective RPI ranking.

We have 16 ACC games to make a statement. I hope we figure out a recipe for making that happen … and soon!

I have no idea how much we were impacted by this, but if the coaches are the CEO’s Executive Management team and they don’t work well together, much less get along, then the results on the field will suffer.

    Management 101 gents.

I’d like to think that when hiring HCs and Asst. Coaches, these things are taken into account. Unfortunately, I have seen proof otherwise.

Unlike most here, my hatred for Carolina was cemented BEFORE my love of the Red and White.

At 12 years old, my large, Catholic family moved to Greensboro from up north. Although their were little adjustments, we fit in well and with a family with 5 boys (4 in 4 years too) being good in sports never hurt that

Fast forward to the 81 National Championship game betweenIndiana and Carolina. Great game from my memory, but that guy named Isaiah Thomas really chewed them up. Being a bit of an antagonist my brother and I decided to make a t-shirt and created a handmade IU jersey complete with name and number.

The next day at school the Carolina fans weren’t just unhappy with my choice of attire, but down right ugly and racist. Yep, nothing like dropping the N word and telling me I must be a n-lover if I would root for Indiana and wear that shirt to school.

Yep, I knew Wal-Mart fans BEFORE I even knew of Wal-Mart.

Two years later, I comemerrated the 83 victory with a handmade Lorenzo jersey. Two years after beginning my hatred for Carolina, I began my path tkward Raleigh.

Could be a good one, but I have managed my expectations. Like Chop, the team will tell us what we need to know (perhaps not what we WANT to know). I am watching this somewhere that serves alcohol though.

Wufpacker, their coach wasn’t wrong in his assessment of our D, just a bit classless to put it that way. I haven’t watched a game yet this year until this one. Better than I expected.

Anyone hear the Creighton coach at the break? Something to the effect that they were in good position because they have a good D and we don’t. Ouch! He does realize that it was a nip and tuck game, right??? )

I had no clue about Chris’ Dad so thanks for sharing the article as well as that picture. That picture takes me right back to my youth.

Although an Orioles fan in the mid-70s (other half of the family were Yankee fans), I had a special affinity for both Catfish and Reggie (who left the O’s the prior year). To me, these guy were larger than life, but in different ways.

Living just 30 minutes outside of the city a bunch of kids (ages 10-15) took the bus in and caught the Yanks-Red Sox matchup in September of ’77. Remember it like yesterday as Reggie crushed a game-winning homerun. To this day, I have never been part of a celebration like that. Of course, upper deck seats in right field at Yankee stadium during that day were pretty raucous anyway. Not quite soccer hooligans, but close.

As for Catfish, I was fortunate to meet him at a Juvenille Diabetes fundraiser in Greensboro. Easily the most down-to-earth “sports celebrity” I’ve ever met and kind enough to sign a table decoration (i.e., an A’s baseball pennant) for me.

Thanks for the walk down memory lane!

Is a 12:30 game with national exposure better for us than a 3:30 game without? I’d say more exposure is better for the program, whatever that means these days.

Also, as Chop said, I know how to tailgate. Lining up a well-stocked bloody mary bar, breakfast burritos and hash browns fresh off the grill, and whatever else I can muster up.

Perhaps the ACC saw how our fans were taking the results this season and decided to save our collective livers by cutting down on our consumption time. No worries, I’ve outsmarted them. πŸ™‚

Just enough time for a quick comment. I really appreciate the differing opinions, commentary, and links to articles. Lots of great stuff for me to finish digesting and arrive at a more fully-informed opinion.

Hopefully, I will some time later this week to add something to the commentary here.

50-50? While he is only slightly (5k?) ahead, I’d give ol’ Roy (v 2.0) a better shot than that. Kind of interesting how he so diplomatically announced himself the winner. Mighty big of him, but McCrory showed a big set plays in the Gub’ners mansion. πŸ™‚

Btw, speaking of Governors, Jim Martin is still on the my personal $h!t list after his “move along, nothing to see here” call at UNCX.

It occurs to me that over the years the whole game day experience β€” especially that part inside the stadium has been scrubbed, sanitized and polished to craft politically correct images into a polite TV version image of the University β€” the modern Urban and Urbane Land Grant University.

Yep, and it feels that way too. Being at the game in Greenville this year wasn’t nirvana, but it felt authentic and as though they knew who they were (… a BRAND). Our experience feels manufactured. Actually, more like we just cut and paste things we like from other colleges.

As for the noise, I thought the fans were better than average. The issue I saw was that there was a large influx of FSU fans (at least in section 2) and they were quiet UNTIL they took the lead.

SI have no clue whether Kitchings would be a good hire, but I am pretty sure that executing a transition until DY is closer to departure sounds easier on paper than in reality (I have been a part of something fairly close to that, albeit on a smaller scale). Maybe if our coach stepped down, but otherwise at best it seems that we come across as weak and indecisive (accurate?).

If we’re going to make a change, then let’s do it right. Sign me up for the $7 ticket increase. Worst case I drop one of my 5 season tickets (hey, at least I get TWO parking passes).

If we are to hire someone like Kitchings, I hope we can evaluate their ability to build and manage a staff. Seems that between that and the Recruiting/Coaching piece we haven’t had someone who can do both well (i.e., a CEO of BC State Football) in a while.
