Just talking to my Dad on the phone about Hazel. He was 14 years old, the swamps and roads were flooded here in Ernul (Craven County in case you’re wondering where in the hell Ernul is), and they were using a home made 14′ boat to rescue hogs and move them to higher ground. I’m sure the hogs were happy, until cold weather set in and it was time to make cracklins and sausage.

Also, it would be interesting to know the number of GD’s and MF’s just uttered in Georgia.

That was setting up to be the perfect soul-crushing loss, and then…

I lost an Uncle to ALS…evil disease. He was one of the most talented musicians that I have had the privilege to meet. He was from down here in New Bern, NC. Played first chair trumpet as a freshman in high school, joined the US Army and was accepted into the Field Band during the Vietnam Era (after graduating from ECU’s school of music), earned his Masters Degree from Miami of Ohio, and shared the stage with Louis Armstrong and Dizzy Gillespie…not bad for a poor white boy from Craven County. My Uncle Jesse Nelson is my musical hero.

I have a photo of him with Dizzy backstage in Chicago during the 80’s if anyone is interested.

    Chris, keep up the fight.

BOTB, in reality, I totally agree with the “50% of the time”…I was basically exaggerating for effect.

Also, did anyone catch the ending of the Dallas/Giants game today? It was eerily similar to the ending of our game yesterday.

CD and BOTB, correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe it was Bear Bryant who once said something to the effect of “A good coach can take his’n and beat your’n, and he can take your’n and beat his’n”.

At this point, I am nearly 100% convinced that if you gave DD Alabama, he couldn’t beat ECU.

“Sail with the Pilot, at the wheel”…anybody remember?

N&O ran an article about DT and Towe with the Alley Oop…glad I’m old enough to remember…at least we have our history. If you look at stats since 1987, it seems that no one in Raleigh at State College gives a crap about our history.

Thanks MrPlywood. I was not able to make it to Raleigh Sunday, but I did listen to the audio coverage. The announcer just went on and on about the great job that Malik McDonald did to not allow bonus points…and what else is there to say about Gwiz? What an awesome performance!

Thanks for the update on the final match…I was streaming the audio and lost it in the first period…Nice!

Maybe we should stop calling them the asterisks, and start calling them the colons. (heh heh!)

SaccoV, the pleasure is all mine! Glad I could lend a trifle to the thorough coverage that you provide. Again, it was so refreshing to meet the team, and experience first hand just how polite and respectful every member is, and the way they interacted with the small kids was great to see. I implore everyone, even if you are not into wrestling, to at least go experience this one time; you just might get hooked! (And its also free!)

I was at the match today, and it was great! We took 6 members of my son’s high school team, and they participated in the free clinic from 11 to 12, and the match started at 1. Here are the scores that I jotted down in the order they wrestled:

285 Nick won by technical fall
    125 Fausz won 8-4
    133 Morris lost 2-17
    141 Jack won 10-0
    149 Donahue won 9-6
    157 Gantt won 11-9
    165 Rohskopf won by pin
174 Hall won by technical fall
    184 Renda won by pin
    197 Boykin lost 3-5

    Final score 35 – 7
Also had chance to meet all of the team after the match, and got an autographed poster by all of the team, and Coach Pop too. It was an awesome event to attend, and any of you Pack fans that live in the Raleigh area, I encourage you to be at the fairgrounds next Monday, January 25 at 7 pm to cheer on the Pack against the Holes. It was nice to get the opportunity to meet the team, and shake hands with Gwiz! Go Pack!

Hey SaccoV, it appears that I will be traveling with my son’s wrestling team to Raleigh on Sunday…hopefully I can get some good pictures, too.

Hey SaccoV. It is uncanny how similar my son is to your time in wrestling. He is over 6′ tall at 14, and struggling with the sport, but he loves it. Last year he was 170, but after a season at high school he is now in the 150 range. He is lean and loving it! It is amazing what this sport has done for his confidence. He has great coaches, and he listens to every word they say. If he never wins another match, he has definitely grown as an individual. I am amazed at the effort it takes to excel at this sport…football at NC State could learn a lot from this level of dedication.

SaccoV, thanks for this thread. I never wrestled, but my son started last year in the eighth grade…watched him get his first pin in a live match Tuesday night. I hope to get him up to Raleigh on the 17th to watch Gwiz…my son is awed by that dude! (and his old man is too!) Thanks again for the great coverage!

Based on sheer quarterback comparisons, it was like we had Grady from “Sanford and Son”, and they had Michael from “Good Times”.

I also listened to the interview with DD on the radio after the game. One of the questions was about getting McClendon in the game at the end. DD said that they talked about it, and asked JB if he wanted to be taken out to let JM play, and he said “No, he wanted to finish it.” ???

Thank God that I don’t have to go to work Monday and listen to insufferable Holes fans rant about being ACC champions.
