Guy Lewis should have known to “dance with the one you brung” and what got Houston to the dance was a high-flying, slamma jamma offense.

1983 was awesome with the cardiac Pack. Beat uncheat with Jordan and Virginia with Sampson both twice that season not to mention Huston phi slamma jamma for the Championship. Saw the unx defeat at Reynolds. Sweet. The end of season campus party was legendary.

They may have had the Phi Slamma Jamma but IIRC we opened and closed the game with a dunk. Houston may have had one dunk if any at all. Their holding the ball and slowing the game down was a gift beyond belief.

It’s a whole lot more fun winning than losing, eh?

We sure could have used that tall, #14 last year. Where’d he come from? (sarcasm alert)

We have 8 or so tough and/or competitive games. We are due a little luck. If we get it, we could win 9 or 10 regular season games. If not, then… oh, well. We should beat Georgia State. We could beat all the rest. We likely won’t and we likely won’t embarrass ourselves.

    My how times have changed!

We ought to undefeated and bowl-eligible when we head to Death Valley on Oct 20th…

If it turns out that we are undefeated going down to Clemson, this ole boy will be ecstatic. I usually say some far-out sh!t but Bill, I think you out did me on this one. 😉

I’d say these home games are decent, not national headliners but decent.

Well, we didn’t screw up the in-bounds play leading by 8. LOL

    Yogi,
I love where you are looking and I most emphatically agree with your “recruits are upgrades” point of view.

I still say Reggie is the “next man up” and will be until that “shining star” shows he has all it takes to be a P-5 RB. Our system dictates we be able to pass block as well as run and receive. We may be in the situation we were in several years ago when Tony Creecy was the starter but took fewer snaps than the next 2 RB’s.

I’d like to see both Person and Collins get touches as they appear to be the ones in 2019. Unless another “shining star” comes along.

Small point about Payton Wilson, he said he was switching to State because he fit in here. He isn’t a poser, he’s a hands in the dirt, great work ethic kind of guy.

Wait, did I initially say anything bad about Keatts? He’s done a bang-up job, more than I expected, and I think he has great character. However, I’d like to close out games without having a heart attack. That’s a little bit of coaching, but I also think it’s mostly the players executing properly.

You’re cool. Our need to work on inbounding the ball in late game situations was just so obvious that it was almost insulting to point it out. I shouldn’t have said anything and I apologize.

We do have team needs and Keatts IMO should be working from his list of priorities to coach, which isn’t necessarily the same as our list if priorities. That’s what I mean by letting the man do his thing.

I wonder what Keatts thoughts are about Allerik Freeman. You can’t just tell a player not to shoot so much even if you think those thoughts. KK seems to be doing a great job with team chemistry. Whatever he’s doing is working.

    Go Pack!

Not sure if he’s quite ready. As they say ‘next man up’, which will probably be Person.

Next man up will be Reggie Gallaspy. Take a look at his work in the Sun Bowl. In both halves he ran hard and actually picked up more yards than Hines in less carries. “Next man up” will have to show proficiency in pass pro before he gets a lot of caries in our offense.

Best case scenario will be Gallaspy doing the heavy lifting until Person and Collins demonstrate they can pass block. Shifting our focus we could be just about as well off as we would be without Hines. I’m smiling to myself thinking of RG wearing the defense down and Person and/or Collins ripping off some big gains in the second half.

We need to work on inbounding the ball in late game situations. At least Keatts took that TO.

This observation would have been brilliant — had it been made before the last 2 minutes of the game. Made after the game it almost insults our intelligence.

If any of us have ever coached at any level, we know that teams have multiple coaching and/or training needs. You could say that the games are played to see what we need to practice or teach. Before last night’s game we had many needs (and still do) with a higher priority than the last 2 minutes when we are ahead by 6 or 8 points.

Keatts is exceeding expectations. Let the man do his thing.

Huzzah that is good news. Hopefully he and others will come back with the attitude that there is some unfinished business to take care of.

I think Finley knew all along he wasn’t leaving. Leary not enrolling early is a tell. Finley is coming back. Leary can red shirt his freshman year and have 4 years eligibility assuming he doesn’t get beaten out which is unlikely.

“unfinished business to take care of” is the reason Chubb gave for staying another year. Jones had personal family financial reasons for leaving but Finley does not nor does Hines. Roseboro is staying likely because of a promise he made to his father shortly before his death.

The last piece to the leaving early puzzle is Richardson. I don’t know Richardson’s personal circumstances but I do know he owes his team mates one for getting himself suspended for the SoCar game.

Given we lost by thirty any discussion about what we are doing right would be pretty short. But there’s nothing stopping you from having that conversation.

Oh no, Basketball is your thing Rick. I just hate to see the crap start — and it’s already started — on Keatts like it did you know who.

Have a nice season. I’m out of here. Might see you again in the fall. 😉

Our game threads are all about what we are doing wrong. IMO Any fool can “see” what we are doing wrong. What would reading these game threads be like if we were commenting on what we were doing right — just occasionally.

How long is going to be before we are making lists of what Keattts is doing wrong and what he should be doing. About relatively the same as football would be my guess.

I also find it funny we gave DD the benefit of the doubt for football for a few years, but KK hasnt even played a full ACC schedule and some want to get rid of him. Just Crazy

You must not have been here when Doeren went 0=8 in the conference. I’ve been reading, lurking if you will, and no one is advocating firing KK. Some will soon enough because that’s all they know to do. Keatts is a teacher. I’m watching him on the sideline. He want lose his team with ridiculous looks and rants.

I have more to say but learned my lesson in the football threads.

Mobilehoma should win this thing comfortably.

What does a tornado and a divorce decree have in common in Oklahoma?

If either one hits, somebody is losing a mobile home.

-My phone’s been ringing. Every telemarketing outfit in North America has been calling.

Instead of getting annoyed I’ve started having fun with them. When they ask for me, I answer in my best old man voice, ‘Who is this anyhow?’ And it goes down hill from there. 😉

Our last chance to move up in the final rankings has evaporated with the five picks thrown by Lamar Jackson.

The bowl got what it wanted — the chance to see a former Heisman throw 5 INTs. LOL

Great game yesterday, felt like the Pack was in control for the entire game.

I wouldn’t be surprised next season to see Hines moved to Samuels’ spot and Gallaspy taking over as the primary ball carrier. That dude has languished behind some good runners, but he has done a pretty good job when he gets touches, and he is the bruiser runner. That would then leave those two positions open the year after for Pennix and Person, who along with Leary (assuming Finley doesn’t leave) would all have a year of college football under their belts and 3 years to play together. And both Pennix and Person could be worked into the rotation next year to give them quality playing time…assuming, of course, that they are both up to the jobs.

I like where you are looking!! Gallaspy on the inside and Hines with the jet sweeps and other roles JaySam had. My only rap on Hines, Des Kitchings really, is he hasn’t been coached to turn it up field. Stringing it outside sometimes works but often is a set-up for lost yards.

We are starting to become a team that reloads, not rebuilds. 2018 will be a very informative year.

All I’m saying is there will be that day. The days when an assistant leaves or is shown the door. It happens. As the leader Coach D has to be prepared. I’m not advocating removing anyone but unless head coach’s money it will eventually happen – and maybe then watching the FSU thing. I do think efforts have been made to keep assistants but as we all know at some point someone will leave.

Doeren is starting his 6th year. We don’t have to speak in the future tense. Doeren has been and is prepared. He made the tough decision with Canada. Jackson was replaced by McDonald.

What I was addressing was HOW he is prepared. We don’t have the big bucks to throw at big name assistants so Doeren has created a culture where coaches want to come here to coach for a lot of good reasons. We have a culture where our coaches when they get here, don’t want to leave.

what we haven’t seen is potential turnover with assistants. Not being negative as that is part of building a program.

Let Mr. Sunshine weigh in: Doeren gave up a million dollars to stay here, what would an assistant be willing to give up to stay?

Doeren appears to take family life for himself and his assistants seriously. I’ve heard he has run an assistant out of the Murphy Center who was there after it was time to go home. He’s concerned or so I hear about assistants having an opportunity to schedule vacations with their families.

The LSU coach admits he interferes with the play calling. He has the right to do that but what does that do for his relationship with coaches. You don’t keep coaches by screwing around with them just because you can. Drinkwitz, for example, is young, brilliant and learning how to win. IMO you have to let employees make mistakes, even sometimes costly mistakes, in order to keep the ones with real potential. Drink has real potential.

Drink is in the box. Ledford was shown on the sidelines today with a headset on and identified as the Run Game Coordinator. That level of participation is vital to having job satisfaction. George McDonald is the Passing game Coordinator. He has job satisfaction. Nearly all assistants have young families. Time with the family, job satisfaction, decent working conditions and working for a man with a vision for the “company” all go into making leave or stay decisions. It isn’t always who will pay the most money.

We have not renewed some contracts of coaches who weren’t fulfilling expectations and we have lost coaches to what I would call promotions to Coordinators which is what you want to be the reason every coach leaves — he was poached for a step up in his career.

I hope I don’t sound like I know it all as most of this speculation and guess work based on a few bits of information I have gleaned.

BTW Dave was given a Gatorade soaking today. He seemed to love it. A happy man. (Would he been as happy at the Pinstripe Bowl?)
