    TOTALLY AGREE!!!! BRAVO!!!!

And don’t interpret this posture toward our program as cart blanche to just do your best and we’ll see. No, DD has standards he has to meet, don’t worry. But let’s make those standards realistic.

Even, when year three doesn’t turn out to be the golden year we want (see cutcliffe) we need to keep a realistic timeframe in mind. I mean, Mullen has had much higher ranked recruiting classes at Miss St., and he’s 33-27 overall regular season through his first five seasons. Year six is his results year.

    Wow, this is wild!

Winning cures everything. So, please continue to say what you will until we win again. BUT, when we do, step back for a minute and think about the long-term direction and what it will take to get us there.

I really like Lewis as well, but I think you have to look at upside when comparing our two PG’s from this year. I know Cat had plenty of Freshman moments, but the real comparison is whether Cat’s offensive leadership will be less of a weakness than Lewis’ defense. For me, there’s no question you have to go with Cat moving forward, and that means he get’s more playing time this year.

There’s just nothing you can do to improve a guy with Lewis’ physic on defense (and this is coming from a 5’8″ guard). I’ve heard coaches from lower college ranks say that players have the skills that it takes to play at the highest college levels, but the guy whose 4 inches taller and 20 pounds bigger can do it just as fast and as good as you can.

I felt like our real setback in the ACC semi’s were when we needed Lewis in the game on offense, but had to resort to the zone for a few minutes to offset the defensive weakness. This is when Duke pulled from 3-4 to 8-10 points ahead. Honestly, other than that spurt, we stayed with them. So, I’m pleased that we need Cat’s offensive leadership to improve in the future rather than Lewis’ defense.

Can’t believe I’m saying this, but for the first time all season I felt like we had other go to players on the team. I remember watching in the 2nd half when warren was taking a breather, we had 5 guys on the floor who all wanted to score: cat, turner, Washington, lee and Anya. Our offense was active and aggressive without warren. I remember thinking, so this is the beginning of what next year will look like. Last night, it actually looked pretty decent.

Gott said in the post game how much this team has grown up and I think we saw some of that last night.

Great article. I really enjoy doing this every year, but hopefully it won’t matter so much for State fans in the future.

Without reading ahead, I did the exact same elimination process to get down to the final four teams. I think this is what was being discussed:

Are we really going to give the ACC 7 teams? If not, then FSU vs State is one of our answers. I think the head-to-head win and the better ACCtourney record was what did it.

Then I would have chosen Cal over Iowa for two reasons: #1, the OOC SOS was not even close, #2 if you eliminate best and worst wins in the final table, you have to give Iowa a slight (very slight) advantage.

    Glad we’re in.

So, I don’t agree with mouthing off, it usually creates a whole lot more problems than it solves. But I have to say, thank you for writing this piece. It’s the piece I wanted to write as soon as I read the full article on their website.

Pakfanistan, I understand your comment (I was actually expecting it as soon as I read it), but you’re missing the point. Don’t attack the letter but understand the meaning. It’s obvious you have to score more points than your opponent to win, but the point obviously being made is that neither team should have to do more to have an equal opportunity at winning. If this weren’t true, it is the very definition of a disadvantage and is the very thing the referee’s are there to avoid.

Somebody should make a vine of this, then we all donate money and take up space on every digital billboard in the triangle area for one day just replaying this vine over and over again, with the hashtag #9outof10secrefs

Look people, it’s the job of the coaching staff and the players to forget about the refs during the game and play their best. But it’s the job of everyone else who supports the team to make sure the team gets a fair shake when the clocks ticking. So, don’t give me any crap about not complaining about the refs.

I do not necessarily subscribe to the conspiracy stuff, but this is what I do subscribe to. It’s unavoidable human nature for these refs to go into this kind of game with subconscious thinking that State will need to take advantage of UNC to win, whereas UNC has the talent and experience to beat a team like State without any help or even with a few things going wrong. This provides a context for refs to take a defensive posture against protecting a team like State whereas it’s very natural, given the context, for them to “protect the quality” of the better team.

While this is, as I’ve said, unavoidable human nature, it’s OUR job to call attention to it and try to change the reality in a respectful way. So, get off my back about complaining about the refs!!! When you’re watching what I watched, somebody has to.

So, discussing the actual call. I’ve watched the video from two angles and my opinion is that the foul was committed when TJ was still dribbling. I’m not exactly sure whether he is, by rule, allowed to then leave the floor to shoot. But it would appear that the foul was committed before he was in the act of shooting (although the call, of course, was not). Someone else will have to inform me what the exact rules are on “the act of shooting”.

I think the bigger problem was the idea of a flagrant 1 foul. I’ve looked up the official rules:

    Flagrant 1 Personal Live
    A personal foul that is
    excessive, but not based
on the severity of the act

I though I’ve read somewhere that committing a foul with two hands is a flagrant 1. It seems clear to me that the defender had his right hand on TJ’s back and reaches around with his left hand to swat his arms. I don’t see how this wasn’t reviewed and determined to be a flagrant 1 foul. Can someone clarify the two-hand idea for me.

IF it is not a flagrant 1 foul, I think the correct call was a foul on the floor.

Add Thomas-Williams to WVU, which brings the out of state schools taking top NC talent to 69%, with 46% going to non-ACC schools.

I’m not in the know about recruiting at all, I really just keep up with it from a distance. One question I have is about in-state recruiting, as I know most everyone would agree this is one of our largest opportunities for improved talent.

A quick look through the ESPN 300 (not to credit these rankings over others, but simply as a quick survey of some of the best talent in the nation), shows 13 recruits from NC. Two of them have committed to UNC, two of them have committed to State, one is still uncommitted as far as I know, leaving eight going to out of state schools, or 62%, with five of these eight going to non-ACC schools (two to UGA, one to Florida, one to Tenn, and one to Penn St.).

I understand that when you’re a nationally recognized recruit, you’re targeted by nationally-ranked schools. How realistic is it to think State could begin to pull 1/3 to 1/2 of these top in-state recruits? Should that be our #1 recruiting goal?

If we’re out of the running for Scott, how’s the visit for Thomas-Williams looking this weekend? Do we have a realistic shot at one of these guys?

I agree about rebounding. That stat has so many hidden parts to it. I wonder how many fouls we pick up after an off rebound? I wonder how many buckets we’ve made on the possession following a def rebound?

The list goes on. All of this comes down to rebounding.
