Heard an interesting story yesterday. Not sure how reliable it is because the source isn’t a close friend, but he claims the BOT forced Yow’s hand. They were very involved in the decision. And Yow was allowed to decide whether Coach finished the year or not. Interestingly, the timetable matches. BOT did meet on 2/16-2/17. Nothing on meeting agenda that stands out, but my guess is this was a closed door meeting or communication since it’s a personnel matter, and those aren’t subject to NC open meeting/record laws.

On another note, ran into an ex-player from the Sendek years recently who I see from time to time. He’s worked out periodically with the team. He was unimpressed with the practice routines and preparation and development of players to say the least. Just supports what we’ve all observed. And to echo what others have said and what now seems obvious, Lutz was absolutely the only planning/prep and X&O guy worth a crap.

I don’t think Marshall is that difficult to read. Had we done our due diligence, a competent AD might have hired him when Lowe was hired; he should’ve at least been among the top of the plan B candidates. Second go around, he should’ve been choice #1. Pieced together from plenty of news reports where he’s directly quoted, and a little inside scoop, my take is that he didn’t come the second go around because we didn’t offer a long-term deal with enough incentives. I think it was probably comparable to what Gottfried was offered. Given his family’s happiness in Wichita, the really strong team he had coming back, it wasn’t an offer befitting his ability and success. I don’t think the Yow factor, at least personally, played in to it at all with him. Yes, Smart shouldn’t have been offered first, but had the right deal been presented, I think Marshall still would’ve been commanding our sideline. And I think it’s a completely inaccurate characterization of him to think he wants the spotlight, or needs to be the big man on campus. That’s about the furthest thing from the truth. He’s very humble and down to earth. He’s incredibly hardworking and doesn’t put up with a bunch of crap. It’s simply not all about the bucks. The guy has long arrived and shown he can win with less.

^I’d actually be surprised if Marshall wasn’t interested. I don’t think it’s as high at may have been in years past. But I’ve said it repeatedly, he wanted the job twice. We blew it. And it has more to do than money.

From 2015, which about sums it as I’ve heard from longstanding close personal friends of he and his family:

“Marshall’s family enjoys Wichita, its schools and their friends, they have said. The happiness of Lynn Marshall and children Kellen and Maggie have always played a role in Gregg Marshall’s decisions and explain, in part, why he remained at Winthrop and Wichita State when tempted with other offers.

“If it ends up being about money, then there is some point that number is not attainable and wouldn’t be financially responsible,” Sexton said last week. “But there are so many other things that add up to what is a great job opportunity. We try to pay attention to all of those things.”

The article also goes on to discuss why he’s turned down more money in the past:

“Marshall’s most consistent standard for a new job is that it not be a rebuilding situation,” particularly as it applied to Alabama.

    1. We are not a complete rebuild. Anybody can recruit here.
    2. He wanted the job twice.
    3. Marshall is fantastic evaluator and developer of talent, and he’s an excellent recruiter.

TOS reporting sources indicate a budget of 3-4 million per year. That’s not upstart money. That’s you-better-win now money.

I think it’s less than 50% he’s interested, but Marshall, who’s a young 53, and hungry, has to get major consideration. I realize Miller is the sentimental pick, and I think he’s a great coach, but…

Being of his generation, I’m afraid his pacing of the sideline might harken up old memories of the great wood chopper, and I’m not sure I can stomach it. It took many years to purge those memories.

Gottfried is leaving here just like he did Bama. They simply had the gonads to at least tell him to pack it up midseason. Real coaches take menageries and turn them into stone, or they don’t recruit what’s breakable.

The guy is an first rate ass and shyster of the first order. Good riddance.

tip a the cap to wulf for the preview. Can we pitch? That’s the question. As always, D-1 Baseball, following in the footsteps of Baseball America. has us overrated early. East coast bias.

Great makeup of a roster but I’m not sold on the pitching and don’t think EA will run enough to outscore the opposition

Classy as a Capital Blvd. used car salesman. I’m grateful for Year 1. Every other was a dud. He’s robbed the bank and ruined a golden opportunity to resurrect a career. There will be cheers out of respect at his last game but it will be brutal until that time. Laying the blame anywhere other than at his feet for this debacle is shameful.

Anyone who doesn’t take a job because an AD is reportedly hard to work with is a patsy.

This team could do no worse if it were to carpool to the gamesite without coaches.

Early in the season, there were multiple instances where Schroyer through up his hands in disbelief over effort, a defensive lapse, etc. The head man did nada.

Pine time plus drills are the only ways to communicate and teach 18-20 year olds, especially of this generation. Cause there’s a good chance they haven’t had much instruction on the defensive end anyway.

AD’s intermediary – “Coach Marshall, AD Yow wanted me to let you know she knows she screwed up last time. We should’ve made you our number one priority and showed you how much we wanted you. She wants to personally extend her apology.”
Marshall – “Yep, I’m still listening.”
AD liaison – “And AD Yow wasn’t the AD the previous coaching search, but we should’ve hired you then. We want to make up for those piss poor decisions. We want you to spend the rest of your career in Raleigh kickin’ those blue sons of bitches asses”
Marshall – “Uh huh, show me.”

His interview last night had the feel of someone making their last stand. He’s toast. there is no amount of inspiration that can overcome the lack of gonads and fundamentals displayed by his teams

    1. Marshall’s decision not to come here in 2011-2012 wasn’t about money
    2. If Marshall was to be interested in 2017, it wouldn’t be about money. With that said, you still throw a boatload at him to see

And I’m not by any means suggesting that Arch can’t command a big payday. It’s just not the premium you should offer Marshall.

And concerning Marshall, there are multiple articles citing the offer (not simple interest) by NC State, but here’s one where he notes State as being the closest he’s ever been to leaving Wichita.

Marshall is still young enough to give you quality years. I think it depends on what his goal is. If it’s to compete for national titles year end, year out, Wichita is a mediocre option, even in Kansas. Throw about 2-2.5 base at him, with a long-term contract, and give him major escalating incentives. And start by apologizing for not offering the job when Lowe was hired and Gottfried. I don’t think he’ll bite, but if you don’t start here, you’re nuts.

Concerning the loyalty of Arch to Sendek, I don’t think it comes into play.

    1. Sean Miller left Sendek to go with Matta when he took the OSU job after Xavier
    2. Arch’s teams play more like Matta than Sendek
    3. Arch is a Jon Miller protege. Plain and simple.

Gottfried is done. He quit. The only negotiation should be how much $ he gets to walk. But for the life of me, how many parties in the AD’s office would’ve even privy to a discussion about a firing?

^yes, it was turgeon, and I don’t why there’s even an ounce of confusion about it. Was discussed ad nauseoum. Marshall was offered the friggin job and declined. He should’ve been #1 choice but we went after Smart. And Marshall was still close to accepting the gig. He’s admitted as much publicly.

^Pomeroy has said numerous times that his methodology is only meant to be predictive of Team A playing Team B. Wichita State got a bid last year with its relatively unimpressive resume because it played the early part of its year against a fairly strong OOC schedule without it’s all-conference point guard who was injured. IMO, that’s more of an example where the committee may have used KenPom to justify a sound decision, when the subjectives–the loss of a key player early–knowingly hurt its positioning in other polling and ranking systems.

^This subject was covered by national media and other Pack sites in detail upon Gottfried’s hiring. It was a known fact that his defenses were not good in the weak, top heavy SEC. The only surprise this year is just how terrible we actually are on that end.

I’ve said all along that we’d never be good on defense under him, and the only way to possibly counter that weakness, would be to speed up the tempo considerably, press, trap, etc. Now, with that said, I didn’t imagine that our presses, traps, would actually be great considering the overall defensive weakness, but it would speed tempo, possibly force quicker shots, and rely less on communication in the half court. We’ve not really had adequate depth to run in a lot of quality bodies until this year, but look how he uses those. Awful substitution patterns.

On the coaching front, personally, I like Miller due to his age, track record, and experience. Pony up for a long term contract with a relatively low base, heavy on incentives, and room for base growth. Pony up.
