Mark is really going to let this team blow this game. I’m in disbelief at the numbskull turnovers. Where is the discipline?
Anya HAS to be the smallest big man in basketball. The kid cannot finish at the rim. Wonder what his hands measure.
This is a Mark GOTTfried bball game all the way. Letting a 19 point lead dwindle down to nothing. Zero defense being played in the face of atrocious offense.
Lacey playing bad? Give credit for Tokoto for his defense. Mark’s offense just does not work right now. A lot of our sets are just 1-on-5 dribble the ball into oblivion. The fact we were in it late is pretty crazy.
What I want know: WHERE THE HELL WAS BARBER?
Paige ate that kid’s breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
As for the end of the game, I only have one complaint, and that is why we called a timeout BEFOREHAND Barber brought it across the timeline. Having to inbound on the other side of the court sets up a completely different play. Barber HAS to play with more urgency and focus, and Mark has to be smarter and more patient in that situation.
They may not have a #1 NBA draft pick on their roster, but are definitely deeper and super athletic across the board. Will be tough if we can’t defend without fouling. Refs let both teams play in the first half of the Duke game, and hopefully that happens again.
In all fairness, no one was calling for Mark to be fired. After a few games of misserable, unfocused basketball and tough losses, it’s reasonable to question the coaching.
Beating Duke, while a HUGE, win just furthers some points already made: we need to move the ball more, we need to box out, run the floor, play better D, make FTs, etc. We did all those things that we haven’t done in the losses (the main one being passing the ball and moving more).
We FINALLY corrected those things, and pulled out a win. Not settling for mediocrity isn’t asking to reset the whole program. We rose to the challenge-players AND coaches-which is all disgruntled fans were asking for.
Now, we just need to do it again. One game is a STEP in the right direction. We need to make this a habit.
FINALLY make some free throws down the stretch and we pull it out!
Oddly enough, this was a better win than last years UNC game. We had control of that game up by like 24, but somehow let them get it back to 4 with 4 minutes left. TJ was unstoppable, though.
Can’t hold composure when we’re WINNING at HOME by 18 points. How can we go on the road (NCAAT) and win?
Aaaaaaannnnnddddd no composure. How hard is it to dribble down the clock and take a shot then get back and play solid D?
Winslow checks in at like 6’6″ 240? Hard to believe he could get knocked down by someone fighting through a screen.
See Cat layup. See Cat defense. Can cat close this game out with positive play? We will NEED 100% focus at the PG position to end this game.
Cat needs to get the bench. He hasn’t done anything all game, and now he doesn’t want to play defense. Time to sub in a Martin twin.
I’m just tired to the excuses Mark spits out. He’s filled with useless platitudes about what we need to do to improve, but is unable to actually coach the game of basketball. And his recruiting? Don’t get me started–very overrated recruiter. All this combined with the fact that he takes ZERO accountability for losing doesn’t sit well with me.
I’m not saying we need to change. But I’m definitely paying much more attention to his coaching now. Recruiting has fallen off and winnable games are being lost. We booted Sendek even though he made the tourney year after year. Does Mark face the same fate?
Idk know man. Playing 1 vs 5 in college basketball, ANY team could FORCE you into that. It has happened all year long. We get blown out or we barely lose, it doesn’t matter, the play stays the same. Only difference is that this game the shots were falling. When it gets crunch time; time to really strap up your boots and go to work–does Mark Gottfried have the coaching capacity to get us there? I think not.
Is it time to start questioning Mark’s coaching? We were hanging in there with better than average shooting, but when it came down to it, we couldn’t play smart enough, eg the really bad shooting decisions, to pull it out. Not only that, we didn’t really stop the bleeding–which I attribute to coaching–until Mark decided to call a timeout with 1 minute left to go and down 10 points. I just think the guy is in over his head here. Not to mention he doesn’t even recruit that well.
After all that, all we need to do is score 3 more points than them in the second half. GREAT GREAT GREAT free throw shooting on our part. Our fouls are looking OK. The guys looked a little bit shell shocked given the atmosphere. Maybe they’ll settle down in the second half. AND REBOUND! Though, something tells me that this Boilermaker team is going to out rebound a lot of teams due to their length. Still, no excuse for not boxing out.
As much as a mess this has been the first half, you gotta think we’re lucky to be in it right now. Gotta think rebounding número uno second half.
