N.C. State (6-0) at Purdue (5-1), Mackey Arena – 9pm; TV: EspnU

So here it is, the first road contest of the season for the young Pack – and against what appears to be a pretty solid opponent. The Wolfpack has been a pretty decent road team for the first three seasons of the Mark Gottfried era, and I’m anxious to see what they look like tonight.
As for Purdue, after reaching the NCAA Tournament six consecutive times under Matt Painter from ’07 – ’12 they fell off the past two seasons – finishing under .500 in each campaign. Most pre-season predictions had this iteration of the Boilermakers pegged to finish pretty low (read: around 12th) in the 14-team conference. Some Boilermakers fans though feel this is too low, and argue that they’ve gained addition by subtraction through the transfer of Ronnie Johnson – plus they have returning players A.J. Hammons and Kendall Stephens.
The Boilermakers have some size (two 7-footers, including Hammons) and early indications are that the backcourt is settling in after an off-season of flux. I saw Purdue play some in the Maui Invitational – my personal take was that the Boilermakers are vastly undervalued based upon the preseason prognostications. From what I witnessed they were very efficient of offense and have the size to compete on the boards, while not overtly strong on defense. If the Pack were able to capture a victory, my feeling is that it would look pretty good by the end of the season. Any road win is great, of course, but I have a feeling Purdue won’t be finishing as low as 12th or 13th in the B1G.
Purdue and the Pack have faced no common opponents so far this season. The Boilermakers stubbed their toe in the opener of the Maui Invitational – falling behind by 20+ against Kansas State before falling short in a rally, but finished up the Invitational at 2-1 by defeating a reeling Mizzou program and then notching an impressive 87-85 victory over a solid BYU squad.
This should be a very interesting game for both teams tonight, and a Wolfpack victory would bode well.

I don’t make a lot of predictions, except occasionally for the BIG games…
but with the BIG ROLL everybody (bball, football, RW, PR, etc ) has been on the last week or so…
I won’t be surprised to see that continue tonight…… and then, on the other hand, I won’t really be surprised to see us play the worst game of the season, either…
disappointed, but not surprised…I don’t know if they still exist… but there used to be a whole lot of common ties between State and Purdue…
just like with State and Penn State… which made this matchup more interesting than it would have otherwise been…See ya’ll around NINE pm !!

Way to commit Bill! 🙂
12/02/2014 at 2:25 PM #63678GowolvesParticipantFound this link. Few things I took from it.
Good on the offensive glass
Good defense based on field goal %
Giving up a lot of points on turnovers.12/02/2014 at 2:34 PM #63679navParticipantFrom what I know about Purdue, they are a zone D based team. They’ll feel right at home giving us a fit on offense. In my mind this whole games comes down to how our outside shots are falling. If Lacey, Turner, and Lee (can’t forget twin A) are hitting some 3’s then we’re golden.
We also need Cat to hit some of those crazy 16-18 foot outside jumpers.
12/02/2014 at 3:06 PM #63680redisgoodParticipantWP76, thanks for the write up.
Yes, Purdue does play mostly zone. Their bigs are foul prone, so what I hope to see is Cat, Trevor, and Dez bust the zone with dribble penetration, and get their 7 footers to foul. I’m not confident any of our bigs can do the job offensively against these guys without fouling, so in my opinion it is in the hands of the guards, as well as Trevor, Ralston, and Caleb from three point land.
Defensively, BJ and Freeman need to deny the entry pass. Otherwise their 7 footers will score a ton or get fouled. BJ’s M.O. has been to let his man catch the ball and then block his shot. That won’t work tonight.
I’m predicting we will shoot well enough from outside and play good enough defense to win something like 70-60.
12/02/2014 at 3:18 PM #63682wufpup76KeymasterThanks for the positive words and insight, everyone.
Agree that guard / backcourt play may be the key for us tonight. Caleb could have a big impact, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Des get more run than he’s been getting – he’s excellent at penetration/slashing … this could pay big dividends if Purdue does indeed zone up.
12/02/2014 at 5:06 PM #63693bill.onthebeachParticipant^Ply…
Oh… I’m “committed” as much as I ever am… except when we play Dook, *NC or those Twerps…
To put my comments in context….
If you’ve ever traded Options on the CBOE or elsewhere…. you should be familiar with the term “Volatility Index”…
This game tonite has a HIGH Volatitly Index… which means the only way to “play” this game is with a “Long Strangle”…
which is the same move I will be using on my Modelo’s…
Pop!

If anybody has real time weather from along I-78 in NJ and Eastern Pa I’m all ears. The radar no worky with Southwest WiFi.
12/02/2014 at 6:27 PM #63702WufpackerParticipantPretty much in the clear b/w Jersey and Allentown at the moment it looks like.
If you’re going west of Allentown, looks like a crapshoot.12/02/2014 at 6:54 PM #63704TheCOWDOGModerator“If you’re goin’ west, east, north, or south of Allentown, I’m betting hard on 6’s. Roll’em.”- CD 2014

12/02/2014 at 8:07 PM #63713LoCoPackParticipant“but there used to be a whole lot of common ties between State and Purdue…”
Bill, one common tie we have with Purdue is their former Provost and our current Chancellor, Randy Woodson. I hope we make him proud he chose the Pack!
12/02/2014 at 8:11 PM #63715TheCOWDOGModeratorNot to embarass anyone, particularly moi’, but how ’bout the PUP76 coming strong here?
Sounds funny, though…Pup…’76…

This.
12/02/2014 at 8:26 PM #63718WufpackerParticipantAt this point, ACC looking like a good bet to get out to an underwhelming 0-4 start with both Wake and Pitt down double figures.
‘Cuse up 2 at the half in Ann Arbor.
12/02/2014 at 8:31 PM #63720bill.onthebeachParticipantSounds funny, though…Pup…’76…
^Cuz… doesn’t that all depend on whether 76 was the year Pup was born or the year he graduated from NCState….
Nobody knows the truth but wufpup76…
… I don’t remember anybody in our class named “Wufpup”… do you?
