OK….what I am doing UP at 3:20 AM? Why am I posting….Pure and simple…I figured out that my 7 YO Sony TV has a bad Prism in the light bock module…and Googled it and even Werner Von Braun would have difficulty just putting in the module….but the dude that did the YouTube has a setup where HE can do a factory recalibration….RIGHT…I can replace (solder/desolder) capacitors and stuff….that is what I thought that NCSU EE’s did….Foolish me….so after picking out a NEW TV and reconfiguring my old custom cabinet….I say down and had a double Crown….and surfed.

Jimmy V is (was) a bit younger than me. Met him a few times at WPC meetings. Followed the pack incessantly during the 83 run. My family’s WP blood runs deep….I have two nephews that are FOURTH generation NCSU Grad’s….that’s some connection. In 1983, each of my BIL’s has a special memory….the younger met his wife at the Brickyard and the older and his wife came to Sanford to watch every game with us.

Fast forward to the mid 90’s….V has passed away. My wife has several books about the championship run that I bought her. I purchased the “THEY….Declared me DEAD” audio book on ebay in Cassette. I eventually converted to MP3 and have the ESPY speech and the WRAL “Wolfpack” song. Jimmy V was vindictive and obviously hurt when he wrote the book. Seems like that was enough to “get it out of his system”. The cassette version is pure V…doing a stand-up routine. I used to run Audio at WRAL and understand scripting. V had a bullet outline and some notes….and WINGED IT.

V’s legacy goes beyond NCSU and the V-Foundation. I personally used some of techniques and also quotes….as well as examples to totally turn around a very poor safety record for a large S&P 500 division. I can truthfully testify that at least 100….maybe MORE folks did NOT have a Lost Time accident during my tenure and that my programs and the continuing work of the teams that I helped train and development kept the string going. NO ONE lost a finger or an eye or anything else.

Jimmy V was “my idol and my dead mentor”. When I would need an inspiration for a new program or to make an after dinner speech at a safety or environmental celebration, I would use him directly or indirectly.

I will not go so far as to say, “I wuz channelin’ V”….but I would say that all the countless hours on an air plane listing to him shuck and jive through the book or in the car as I drove had a profound impact on me.

He was pretty straight up and admitted some mistakes. He was funny in all the “stories” of his life.

SO, I too, get teary eyed this time of the year. I also think about the “witch hunt” that transpired in Raleigh and the “Ho-Hum” response for a situation down the road. Comparing UNC’s “The Great Unpleasantness” to the Jimmy V. Crucifixion….is like comparing 5 pound slab of C4 to a Cherry Bomb or an M-80.

As to NCSU…YES, the AD and staff and the BB staff do “GET IT”. BUT, the faculty and Admin do NOT. They still hold St. Monteith in the highest esteem….despite the fact that he was a mere pawn of Claude Sitton.

Some of the press that covered the “public tar and feathering” are STILL making the rounds. They say that if the AD tried to single out Jimmy V…like naming the PNC Court for him…since it was HIS idea and dream to BUILD SUCH, would be cause for another round of “public Reputation executions”. The much brained, but brilliant folks that followed St. Monteith around is like the spaced out crowd that worships the Rev. Bully Barber. THEY were fed the RED Kool Aid….and if it were Hemlock and St. Monteith said DRINK….this is the Cup of Life…they would never question WHY the servers had AR-15’s and why there were bodies piling up everywhere.

SO, it IS right and PROPER that we think of him. Tell me, do you see DEAN or Roy or, GASP….Mikey on the tube like you see Jimmy V? Of course not. Do miss the V-Man….one wonders if he would have taken over for Letterman many years ago….since the show originates from NYC….

    Outta here….

You know….we REALLY set ourselves up also….

I could do a monolog on the “BitCoin” bowl. Do a Wiki on it….

Laughing at one’s self is considered to be healthy because it exposes your own “weaknesses” and you don’t take your self seriously….

We got INTO the BitCoin Bowl due to some “Back room speculation and manipulation” by certain conferences….and the process was hardly OPEN and Transparent (Hmmm….where I heard THAT before?). That mirrors the BitCoin “index” or value.

The BitCoin chose two teams….for a Bowl whose matchup was the result of “Manipulations” and is sponsored by a “currency” that is so murky that it makes ObamaCare look easy to follow….

They chose teams who’s “value” varies from game to game…..and ONE of the coaches is the ultimate “gambler”….

All I HOPE….is that we did NOT agree to accepting the Bowl Payout in BitCoins….

It is LATE….watching GOTT’s TV show. Intro is a hoot….CORNY, but a HOOT.

Gott’s GREEN Plaid Coat….over the “Red Checked” shirt that he wore almost all of last years….maybe that is a tribute to Sloan….or the fact that he does NOT have, seemingly, anyone to give him wardrobe advice…

    BUT….back on POINT….

UNC is going to the QUICK LANE BOWL? I guess that the QUICK GRADE Team(s) should play in the QUICK LANE BOWL….in motor city….(well it used to be…) the SOUTH is more of a Motor City than Detroit is…

I LOVE IT….we may be playing in a “Bogus Internet Currency BOWL”, but it can be used to buy your new Tesla….

    GO PACK…

    OK….coulda, shoulda, woulda, maybe if…

It is what it is. We ain’t going to Motor City. So, get over it.

NOW, I am NOT planning on traveling….several PERSONAL reasons….like the day AFTER Christmas and the fact that I have a 2 week February motor home trip planned to Tampa….so that is it….

I WOULD recommend that Ft. Meyers and the Edison “campus” be added to the agenda for a really “Cool” side trip. Maybe that is only for us Engineering types, but it our entire party of my BIL and wife and my 20 YO son and my wife thoroughly enjoyed it.

As to Mr. O’Leary being a “Rich Man’s TOB”…..with ALL DUE and APPROPRIATE RESPECT….I can NOT agree with that. TOB, for all his shortcomings, was an upright and straightforward individual.

Coach O’Leary perpetrated a HOAX in his resume (some 20 odd years ago….just “FORGOT” to update and/or correct it). Seems that he was not the “Jock” that he clamed to be at NH….OK…maybe a few of us embellished our HS careers…..

BUT, inventing a “Higher Educational Institution, and then getting a “Master’s Degree” from said “Paper Institution…..Even Good Ole Professor Harold Hill (Music Man) at least had a REAL school….but it had burned down two years BEFORE he said he got his “Professorship” degree there.

Really sounds to me like Coach O’Leary would be an IDEAL candidate to replace Harry (What am I doing here?) Fedora at UNC….after all, they have fake degrees for their athletes…..why NOT a coach with a Fake Degree…

THEN the players and the Head Coach could REALLY bond…..next thing, they could be copying and producing FAKE Money….for those little trinkets that the UNC folks like.

Seriously, We SHOULD forgive and forget Coach O’Leary…..

At least he did “fess up” when confronted….and it finally took that DNA laden Blue Dress (I guess the Monica was REALLY the Devil….with a Blue Dress ON….or in various states of ON and OFF according to her tales to her buddy, Linda….I am RECORDING THIS….Tripp). We seem to FORGIVE certain leaders when they are CAUGHT in a LIE and crucify SOME for making a harmless remark of a simple mistake…

Anyway…I am willing to let ByGones be ByGones….he lied….he paid the price….he showed that he is a good coach…

BUT, he will NEVER be the “straight up” person that TOB is…

GO PACK….I shall support you in absentia…..with full spirit and enthusiasm…

At least we know that O’Leary is of the River’s School….of IT IS NEVER TOO LATE TO WIN…Speaking of PR….is anybody watching the SD v NE game? No WONDER Rivers is not going well…..he is PROBABLY very ILL at the colors of the Uniforms that SD is sporting….

Intereresting….at one point last night, in the second half, the foul stats were NCSU (7or 8) & WFU 2 or 3). THEN it was NCSU 10 & WFU 4. Never seen a game, that I can remember (this is my 9 Season of LTR’s in the Champion’s Club) that had that larger spread.
Perhaps a little history or reminder.
    Feb 18, 2012 – NCSU v. FSU – Hess, Dorsey & Natili – Googs and Corch EJECTED

Mar 8, 2012 – ACC Tourney Opener – WFU v MD Dorsey, Luckie, Eades & Clinton – KH (Karl Hess) tribute on shoes

Mar 8, 2012 – Second ACC Tourney game – NCSU v. BC – Dorsey, Hull & Jones, L – Refs were TOLD to remove KH Tribute tape.

Dec 6, 2014 – ACC Opener – NCSU v. WFU – Dorsey, Luckie & Covingington – 51 FOULS called. NOW, some were EOG JTV “Put ‘em on LINE” strategy…

From Statsheet…..GREAT LINK and the info this year has been expanded.
    http://statsheet.com/mcb/teams/north-carolina-state/referees

Having trouble with tables or tabular data…..here is the syntax

Referee; NCSU total Game; Average Fouls/Game; Rank (Fouls/Game) for “selected” officials.

    2011 – 2012 Season
    Luckie; 4; 21.0; #1
    Nestor; 6; 19.8; #2
    Natili; 6; 18.2; #3
    Dorsey; 6; 17.8; #5 (Tied with Jones,L)
    Jones, L; 5; 17.8; #5
    Hess; 5; 14.6; #11 (out of 12)

    2012 – 2013

    Kissenger; 3; 21.7; #1
    Clinton; 4; 19.3; #2
    Jones, L; 8; 17.9; #3
    Natili; 6; 17.3; #4
    Luckie; 5; 17.2; #5
    NO HESS or DORSEY….HMMMM?????

    2013 – 2014

    Luckie; 7, 22.0; #1
    Hull; 6; 20.6; #2
    Dorsey; 5; 19.4; #4
Natili & Jones, L were toward bottom of 14 Refs.
    STILL NO HESS….Double HMMMM?????

I will leave FURTHER interpretation up to the reader…..suffice it to say…

YES, we DID look a bit ragged…as did WFU…

YES, we DID come alive in the second half….but there were “extenuating factors or influences”, seemingly, in the first half.

The score would have had, IMHO, a MUCH greater spread if there were “Different” officials with perhaps a “NO AGENDA” attitude on the court…

Gonna cheer for the Lady Pack today in Reynolds…..

Did not turn on the TV until late yesterday. Saw the last few minutes of the game….SD’s D let them down….fortunately, the Ravens only got a FG…..so it was up to PR to “do his thing”.

Reminded me of Toby Keith’s “As Good as I once Was”. PR is obviously NOT as good as he once was, yesterday’s performance and the march down the field and the score was pure poetry.

We saw it many times in CF. PR NEVER, EVER gives up. He thinks he can pull the bunny out of the beret and that he CAN win the game.

He did and I was one more happy WOLFPACKER. Still euphoric over Saturday and yesterday just was the icing on the cake.

WOW….I watch PR do a CF style comeback and you lads (perhaps lassies…who knows) are AT IT AGAIN….

I thought that CowDog said he had ConCUSSIONS….and then cleaned my glasses and it was “conclusions”. THANK GOD….he might wander off and not find his way back here and I enjoy him.

Bill….is the beach THAT deserted? I thought it would have been a wonderful sunset..

Seriously….over in UNC land, the erstwhile Bob Lee has just RESIGNED (torn up his membership card) in the Larry Fedora Fan Club. THAT is telling. He hung in with Holden for a LONG time….much longer than the rest.

I don’t know if UNC has MONEY to buy him out. THE Buyout would have to come from the Ram’s Club or the UNC AD. Even little Ms. Light Blue Smurfette can not issue an Executive Order to take the “Unregulated or NON-Restricted Earnings” from the Chapel Hill Fund to pay that little petty cash expenditure.

Jimbo getting advice from the Imperial Bowden? NOW that would be an interesting conversation….one that I would pay a LOT of hard earned pennies to hear.

I DO concur that Jimbo has got his hands, MORE THAN FULL, with jaMEis Winston. I once had a very intelligent Boy Scout as part of my troop. He was brilliant and street smart as well. I and the other leaders took the troop to Charleston to spend the night on the battleship…USS Yorktown. He missed curfew…..ever try to find to find a missing kid on a BATTLESHIP when there is a Private High School Graduation party also going on? THAT is what I think jaMEis is….only orders of magnitude WORSE.

His little “shoving of the ref” incident totally convinced me…..There will be a SECOND Heismann Trophy winner that goes on trial for a capital….or at least a MAJOR Felon offense. It is JUST a matter of time. WHERE are all the adults that are supposed to be around him?

I still can NOT pull for FSU….but think I will let it play out….regardless of the bowl possibilities. Been to the Tire and the Belk Bowl….been to the Citrus and the Gator (more than once) and to the Papa John’s.COM bowl….as well as the LIBERTY BOWL (toes still numb)….plus a few others. I do NOT plan on going to Detroit or to the Blue Bell whatever…..ECU in Annapolis….don’t know….

You guys just keep pecking the keys….love it….

Larry the HAT is NOW irrelevant….and there is absolutely NOTHING that he can do to make the team any better….short of cutting off MANY scholly’s….

I don’t think that Bubba is WORRIED about sanctions over FB….I think he is worried about redecorating the rafters of the Dean Dome and not having enough banners to spread out….plus there is not enough electronic correction fluid in the universe to fix ALL the records that would be vacated….SHOULD the NCAA EVER act….

    Outta here….play nice….

    Thanks, WufPacker,

That’s clears it up a little. I do NOT believe that I can stand to watch the FSU-GT game next week. I believe that we (the WP) should be pulling for FSU….and Johnny Swoff will have all the “creative officiating” mechanisms in place.

BUT, I can NOT get past that idiotic war chant. If we wanted to be politically correct, we would vote (as a conference) to let them keep their name…or maybe change it to the Tonto’s. And we would BAN the chant. Even a spontaneous chorus of it would draw a 15 Yarder….on the Crowd. Ron Cherry would then have his “Giving us the Business” call.

OK….I am NOT an insider…..at NCSU or UNC. But, this is “The Hat’s” third year at UNC. He is 2 -1 against NCSU….but I have read the articles about his contract….and it has a bunch of performance bonuses….such as if he can play drums with Holden Thorp’s Garage band and keep up…

There is NO “BEAT NCSU” payment. He has a 7 year deal…right now the buyout would be around $1.950 Million….say a cool TWO Million. IF he makes it through January, he gets another $100K added to the $400K for each year LEFT….so it will cost a net $300K LESS next year if they keep him.

WHAT is the REAL (not the goobers and boobers on INSIDE Carolina) story on all the rumors….or the REAL skinny on the coach’s tenure?

Just curious….Bo Pelini is now on the market….and BOTBob supposedly has been in contact with him and will tell Bubba about it tomorrow.. KIDDING….but the IC crowd will take it and RUN and the plane will be leaving tomorrow for the presser.

What say you guys? Don’t know WHERE this question should be?

OK….HELP….I do NOT understand JG’s logic….here is what I THINK he said.

FOUR Tier I Bowls (Belk, Sun, Pinstripe – Yankee TOWN and EITHER Music or Gator….not both). That is FOUR…by my count, which includes 15 hours of MATH at NCSU with MA301 being the highest…

There are 6 TEAMS in contention. Three of the teams have 9 – 3 RECORDS. ND is the “fair haired child” and the Remainder of the Tier I teams draw for them…

NOW WAIT A MINUTE….you got 4 Tier I Bowls….and THREE of them are going to Clemson, ND and Louisville….that leaves 1 BOWL….and ND gets it.

SO, how do you get to the REST of his logic.

I really hate to be dense….but as Robby the Robot said in “Lost in Space”….THIS DOES NOT COMPUTE…

    HELP…

Couple of comments….which have probably been made.

Even my wife commented earlier in the week when Jacoby was SO sweet and complimentary about MW….and Hakeem was badmouthing him…..

THAT Hakeem was probably talking the talk of the locker room….which should NOT have been said in a Presser and that Jacoby was trying to cover his team mate’s little gaffe…

    Here is a Doeren comment….

“He was saying what all of us were saying, but it’s not what we needed to say in the (Monday) press conference, right?” Doeren said. “(Williams) is the guy who stirs their drink on offense. He’s a really good player and when you hit a really good player repetitively it makes it hard.”

I took that to mean he is the Wine Steward for their Wine (WHINE?) and Cheese (and today it looked CHEEZY) offense. You gotta love the guy’s down to earth (and also master of the zinger) humor. He does NOT smile much on his TV shows….but let him get “Emotional”….then he is great.

Speaking of Emotions, don’t know what the Side Line Femme Sports person exactly asked, but it dealt with a few “emotional mistakes and penalties”. He said that he WANTED the team to be EMOTIONAL and to play with intensity….properly channeled and he was NOT going to shut it down.

I also cringed (and texted a UNC fan at the game) when I heard Ron Cherry’s unmistakable voice. Obviously Swoff thought he could be a Ref Knight if needed. I told the UNC guy…”regardless of the outcome….BOTH teams are F@#$%^” and he agreed.

FINALLY….with so much jubilation….and the “ARTICLES” being written as we type here…..if you are so INCLINED…go to the News & Observer.

There is an article on Holden Thorp…..Remember him….and HOW he has found “his place” at Washington U in St. Louis. WU is a neat “suburban” campus….we drove through it on a Tour when we followed the WP to Gott’s Sweet Sixteen game there. Really “ivy leaugish” without the ivy…

SO, Holden NOW has time to work on his bass guitar runs and “mingle” with the students. I thought he did the right thing with Butch….but that is about all he gets good marks for. If he had been spending less time working on his Garage Band routines and asking MORE questions about how AFAM and Old Dean and Ole Roy and BOTBob and his crew were “circumventing” any academic controls, then I would have given him higher marks.

One DOES have to wonder about the timing….

HighStick….there seems to be LESS blood on your countenance…..

    I am like Richard Prowse….Can’t keep a thought….

Last night at the BasketBall game, there was a middle to older aged gentleman that had on a RED Tee in the Champion’s Club.

It was a picture of a roll of Toilet Paper and each sheet had a “UNC Degree” or perhaps “UNC Diploma” on it…

You can write your own text….it was something like….”Take one…you’ll need it”. I can NOT find those…or I would buy one.

Today was the funeral of Dr. Robert A. Robinson, the Assistant AD under Valvano. He had an EdD from NCSU and was a ECU grad. Great and learned individual….small in stature, but a GIANT of a brain and wit.

He was quoted extensively and told the AP that “Institutions that claim HIGH graduation rates are delusional and they are awarding them instead of Certificates of Attendance”.

NOW, I know that Dr. Bob as we the choir called him was sharp….but even he did not visualize what UNC had cooking. He was WRONG…rarely such….but WRONG. He did not realize that NOW, you can get an UNC Degree without even “Attending Class” so the correlation between Degrees and Certificates of Attendance NO LONGER exists at UNC..

BTW….the N&O is running an article on Holden Thorp and how the Part Time Garage Band Rocker has found his “niche” at Washington U in St. Louis. WOW….talk about timing. If he had been spending less times on his bass guitar rifts, then MAYBE he might have figured out WHAT was going on and saved UNC (Non Compliance, No Class, No Consequences….keep going) about 5 – 6 MILLION….

Obviously some of you were either up early…..or did not go to bed. Since everyone is expressing their sentiments (which might not be those of the owner’s of this site nor the majority of the users….here goes)

First….how many of your remember the UNC v. ODU game last year. The final score was UNC 80 – ODU 20. Read the attached….my SIL commented on it prior to our game.

UNC-Old Dominion game cut short after Tar Heels score 80 points in three quarters

The final quarter was 10 minutes and a RUNNING clock. I do NOT remember such since 1960 when our sophomore Intramural Team played the 5 Sophomore Starters from the BB team. It was so bad that the coach (who grinned when he let the Varsity Starters PLAY on that team) came over and told the time keeper to NOT stop it. I fouled out….but we had 6 “players?” on the floor and the Refs were told NOT to count. THAT is how bad the ODU v UNC game was.

NOW, is this the SAME ODU team from last year? I do NOT think so, but it does cause me to ponder….

Next….the Black Uni’s. I was also wondering how LONG it would take for Darth to make the scene. I watched ODU’s march and commented to my wife and our group that the Sinister and Macho (BAAAADDDDDDD) image that our Black’s were supposed to connote obviously went over the heads of the lads in White. There WERE times when our Defense reminded me of the Ewok’s…..and we did NOT have their numbers to even it out.

My DW of 49 years also (NOT a Student….by any stretch of the imagination….of the game) commented….I thought our defense was supposed to be better, especially in Black and feeling like they had swallowed the entire vial of Viagra….In other words, we looked like we had EDS….Effeminate Defense Syndrome…. BUT….to their credit, they hung in there.

I always felt, even more so than last week, that we would pull it out….just needed to get motivated…..and did not know HOW many points we had to be DOWN to do that.

The execution of the offense was pretty good….all in all. Kudo’s to the coaches for the discipline on the penalties. I watched the Akron Zip’s give PSU a first down on TWO consecutive Off-Side penalties….right after Chuck got in their face and told them to “Get off the LINE quicker”. I guess he forgot “AFTER the snap”. SO, even with the Military Precision of Tobey, we STILL had penalties.

Finally….I watched the frivolities after the game. Seems to me like they were GLAD and also wanted to share their emotions with the fans. I watched as the fans leaned over the East side wall and every member of the team reached up and gave a “low 5” to any fan with his hand extended….and the LAST ONE was the guy in the Red Shirt and Black Hat….Coach DD himself was the LAST ONE in the line. I think that type of intensity and enthusiasm will eventually put more wins in the season than losses.

FWIW….Tommy Bowden on the ACC Blitz predicted a Bowler for us….now he did so last year….so his calls are not exactly “spot on”.

Came away a bit relieved…..and also feeling that each week it WILL get better. Problematico!…will we improve enough to not let some Thug-Alete Team pound us into oblivion PRIOR to our 2nd half spiritual awakening? Time is gonna answer that little riddle….

I read this last night….then decided to tell my wife about this morning…

    Couple of comments….

UNC is hiring someone as a “High Paid Baby Sitter”….as my wife puts it. My daughter complains about how much “good” baby sitters (older teens without guns, tattoos, and fully dressed) costs in Cary/Apex. Here is a link….
    https://www.care.com/babysitters/raleigh-nc
The average rate is $10.25….and they do NOT get fringe.

SO, UNC, the paragon of social justice is paying UNDER what President Obama demands as a MINIMUM federal wage ($15 – $16). Ordinarily the folks at UNC would be holding candlelight vigils and protesting the petty payment…

I think that UNC has it all wrong….they need to hire “Handlers” instead of class attendance checkers…..CBS (dating myself….when I was a lad) had a VP in charge of Arthur Godfrey…

    AND they want a Bachelor’s degree…

Now to NCSU75’s comments….and also the ADMIN’s feedback to him.

NCSU75….you make a valid point. A LOT of this site does do some serious (as well as humorous) topics on our sister (as well as others, sometimes) institutions and their goings on. When something happens at NCSU, it is probably covered well also.

I, too, wish that perhaps there were TWO sections….State SPORTS…as it relates to the “competition” and MISCELLANEOUS….sort of the editorial overview of what OUR admin does and the goings on of others.

BUT, they are intermingled….like PNB & Jelly….and difficult to separate and in the end, get mixed anyway…

BUT, consider that the cost of this site is free and the guys that run it put in a LOT of time…

So, take it for what it is….enjoy the humor. Enjoy the info on State…

    Welcome…

Posted last night…first one, but the cyber gobblers gobbled it up…so here goes again.

FIRST, if you have not read the November Issue of the Wolfpacker, I highly recommend it. I got up early with the DW and then had a little time to kill. It has a LOT of good articles on the players and their backgrounds. It also filled in some stuff for me. In addition, GoPack.com has a pretty complete overview or summary of the upcoming games. Very informative.

Last night, I watched from our seats in the Champions Club and saw the team see-saw during the first half….then settle down during the second. It was a very strong and good win. NOW, who knows how good or bad Richmond was playing. Their three guys did score a bunch of points. The crowd was small, but really into the game. It was a great game, from a fan’s viewpoint.

NOT BEING paid the big $$’s as a talking head or a coach or even a novice, I will offer some observations. Many have commented and hope this is not redundant.

Gott talked about the game and, in particular, Lacey. Last night, Cat was off. In the previous home games, it was a “friendly” (hopefully) competition between the two. There was barely a 2 point difference when both were on the floor. Last night, Lacey ran away with 19 points (memory) during the first half. Cat only had 2. During the second half, Turner took over and went from maybe 6 or so to 23. Cat finally got 2 FT’s and a FG for a total of 6. Their combined 55 points sort of evened out the scoring.

Gott also commented on Lacey being the “Coach” on the floor. Thought it was pure coach glib. Then Tony put on Lacey. They FINALLY had to cut it short. Lacey just took over….not in a domineering, but matter of fact manner and they let him talk. He commented that the team was enjoying the run and gun pace of the first half and at halftime, Coaching staff (Lutz?) settled them down and they concentrated on D. Then he analyzed the 2nd half. Tony commented that some of the junk defenses that they were running were new to him and he had not watched all of them in practice. Lacey said that some of them were things that the “guys on the floor improvised”. YES, the “Coach” on the floor actually was calling the D and running things that they had only “played with”. After the interview, Gary commented that Gott had played down Lacey’s prowess and even chided him for giving out too much info at a WP gathering. He wanted to keep Lacey’s talents hidden as long as possible.

OK…THAT interview and the comments were an eyeopener. I have been listening to the players of the game do interviews since the 70’s on radio or on TV. Sidney Lowe (Jimmy V’s “floor” coach) was good. He was articulate and concise. I honestly believe that Lacey has a better instinct or knack for the game that Lowe did.

He was as professional as many of the coaches of the lower level teams that we have played this year or last. I was IMPRESSED.

Today, reading the background stories on the team, I paid attention to all the articles and the “fluff” stuff. Our “stars” all say that in 20 years, they want to be still playing in the NBA or retired and living the good life in LA. Lacey’s vision is that he will be an assistant NBA coach or perhaps a head NBA coach. Now that is powerful.

I have a whole new respect for the “behind the scenes” stuff that Gott has done to get Turner and Lacey (probably bent some NCAA rules about “trolling and contacting”). BUT, he pulled it off. With the new guys (but HEY….we have had NEW superstars before), we have a bright future….

I think that the press has, as usual, missed on us. We will not finish around 7th or so….it WILL be higher and I think that we will do well when we get to the dance. NOW, will Gott take us to the final dance number? WOW….what Odds…BUT if we continue to improve (Lacey says he is still VERY rusty after his year off and is improving) and if CAT can find his Mo-Jo (he really lost it last night), then we will win a lot. I sure hope that Gott feels the need for a “tribute” to Jimmy V and has a short…”This is how you cut down the nets” drill. THAT emphasized Valvano’s faith or dream in his guys and did a LOT for their personal confidence….

GO PACK….Boise whatever will be here tomorrow night…

NEVER thought about it….Not being a “social media” user or follower nor had inclination to invest in such directly (but own a bunch of it in Mutual Funds), I guess we of the order of the Red, White and Moral do owe a debt of gratitude to the following….

Jack Dorsey; Biz Stone; Noah Glass & Evan Williams. Looked them up and NONE are UNC or NCSU Grads….or even attended. Closest I found was that Evan Williams was a Farmhouse Fraternity member….so I guess I should ask for a few shares of TWTR since I was once such.

Had it NOT been for their High Tech “Look at ME” app that even the “Duh…..we can barely read at a 3rd grade level” folks like Twettin’ Marvin, then this little warm breeze off the coast of Western Africa would never had been spawned and turned into the Cat 5 Storm that it has….maybe it is more like a disturbance in the West that developed into an F5 monster that just dropped out of the “Light Blue Skies” without warning and devastated the entire campus of UNC….laying waste the Athletics Department as well as the complicit Academnians that let it grow and mutate into the multi tennacled and faceted gremlin that it is.

SO, after all the turkey, while you may be having an adult beverage while watching the NFL or other entertainment….hoist an adult beverage to the four individuals above and say….”Thank YOU!”. Had they made it anymore complex, then the Flagship’s “students” would have been too technologically challenged to ever get the word (and pictures) OUT…

On to Saturday…..bring your EMPTY Red Spray Paint cans for the “simulated” celebration and defacing of Kenan after OUR Victory.

Not a whole lot to add to the game. Go to any site that has the stats or box score. That speaks volumes….best performance of the year and a complete team effort (OK, Cat was not exactly at 100% efficiency). Where we had Cat’s deficit, Turner and Lacey turned it on for a combined 49 points….so that HELPED.

Aside from how good we looked, especially, in the second half, the REAL story….or at least to me is the OTHER side of Lacey.

If you did not catch the Radio Post Game show, then you missed the inaugural edition of “The Trevor Lacey Recap”. During the Post game interview, Gott was gushing about Trevor. He has made a few references before about Trevor being a “Coach on the Floor”. He said that again tonight, but added….during timeouts, Trevor was tell me and the staff WHAT we needed to do or to try.

I thought….OK….maybe a bit of the glib and golden tongue of Gott. THEN, Tony and Gary had Trevor on. It was like listening to any of Gott’s assistants. His understanding of the game and what they (never said I) did to win was fascinating. He also gave you a player’s perspective. He said that they had a “lot of fun” during the first half and that the Coach settled them down (maybe Lutz…specifically) and they were much better in the second half.

Tony was talking about some of the junk defenses that the team was using. Tony commented that he had not seen those in practice. Trevor said that they were some “improvisation” that he and the guys sort of “came up with” during the game. Did you comprehend that? Remember when HWWNBSOHA was asked WHY he did not make defense changes or use some “junk” and he said….”We never practiced that…”. Tonight, we used some junk and it worked.

I have listened to WP BB since the early 70’s. USUALLY on the radio. I remember Sidney Lowe (V’s coach on the floor) talking after the games or being interviewed for TV specials. Sidney was SHARP….and I mean SHARP at recognizing what was going on. I NEVER, EVER heard him summarize a game as concisely as Trevor did tonight. Tony and Gary just shut up….they just let him talk and occasionally threw in a comment or a question. Time finally caught us and they closed it out.

It was unbelievable. I have heard a lot of coaches talk about their team’s efforts and the reason for their loss or win. This guy was as good as at least half of them.

Trevor also said that he was “still rusty” from sitting out a year and was improving each game. I hope that every game is a bit better…..and we wondered where TJ’s firepower would come from??? Tonight we found out.

GO PACK….on to T-Day and then Boise State on Friday…

I am saddened to advise that one of Jimmy V’s Assistant Athletic Directors, Dr. Robert A. Robinson passed away today. Dr. Bob, as we his fellow choir members called him, was 91 and had developed a serious illness that his body could not stave off. Dr. Robinson was quoted many times by the local media. He was the one that quipped….or perhaps was a bit more serious….as he had a keen wit and could throw a zinger….the following…

A story published by The News and Observer of Raleigh and an Associated Press dispatch on Thursday said Dr. Robert A. Robinson suspected that schools that boasted a 100 percent graduation rate for their athletes simply awarded them “certificates of attendance.”

NOW, we know that Dr. Bob was indeed wrong…rarely, but this time. The folks at UNC did not even have to attend.

Here is a link to an old article that describes his role and comments…

    http://www.fayobserver.com/sports/of-valvano-s-recruits-have-graduated/article_76a1e86a-172b-5481-91c6-a84123d2d4af.html

Dr. Robinson’s services will be held at the Macedonia United Methodist Church in Cary. It is diagonally across from Colonial Baptist Church, where I think that Kay Yow’s services were held.

The family has a planned visitation at 10:00 and the services will be at 11:00 this coming Saturday (11/29).

Knowing Dr. Bob, he will probably take Jimmy V aside and have a little talk with him….and Lo and Kay will be next on his list….he was loved and respected by a LOT of folks…

Very nice and touching article. I have the distinct privilege of having his book….”Lifetime Contract….Declared me DEAD” in an MP3(4?) format. I dubbed it from cassette to CD and then converted it. I listen to it every year. Tim Peeler’s comments are the same ones he made in the taping. The book was VERY vengeful….but give the V man a microphone and he becomes a comic. He used comedy to actually cover some warts. So, when he sat down to do the Audio Book, it was more of a stand-up routine…I actually DO get teary eyed when he does the “Dean Smith….I don’t worry about defeating him….I will outlive him…” line.

Second thing that other books points out and you get this when you listen to the V man is his definition of success. It was measured in dollar signs. Even the team managers would comment on the Coach writing down financial achievements, over a beer, on a white board. He WAS a dreamer….

I can NOT help but throw in a comment that I made many weeks ago. Jimmy V had a DREAM. Dean (and maybe ORW) had a SCHEME…

That sums up Jimmy V’s personality. He DID, according to most inside sources….get caught up in the “OK, you can make any side money you want….” syndrome. From motivational speeches to car commercials to whatever. Terry Gannon once quipped that he would SO glad if he could watch a re-run of “F-Troop” or some other TV show in the afternoon and NOT have Coach V hawking a product.

BUT, he was OUR V man….I will not dwell on the things that happened to him….his “sins” were little white lies compared to mass murder….or to The Great Unpleasantness over in light blue land.

Jimmy V recognized that he would not achieve all his dreams. YES, he did set up the V Foundation so that Pam and family would have some gainful employment as he had NOT really socked away the fortune that he knew he could make for them. BUT, that quickly became a moot point as the Foundation is TOTALLY self-endowed or sustaining. Therefore, 100% of every donation to the V Foundation is used for cancer research…..and NOT admin expenses.

I often listened to the Jimmy V audio CD’s when I traveled and had to make speeches to groups promoting safety and environmental excellence….and that is a BORING and not really interesting topic. BUT, I would gain a LOT of insight into how he approached motivation. I used his lines….I also used his “aura” as folks all the country know Jimmy V as that crazy guy running around in ABQ after pulling off the biggest upset in NCAA history…..and having a dream….and then realizing it…

RIP, JV….we really need to put your name on the court at the PNC….might just help those FT’s fall….even though they would have pasta sauce all over them….

It was an interesting game. We never were able to put them away. We struggled a bit in the first 3 games….but always had a good margin.

Tonight, we were up by 10 or so about 5 minutes into the 2nd half and we barely pulled it off. That final 3 looked awful good. Listening to the post game coaches comments…..

I would say that the SF coach (he and assistants are NO slouches….Cal trained them) was fairly upbeat. Gott was disgusted. It was like the losing coach was more upbeat than the winning coach.

In the last 3 minutes or so, I had horrible flashbacks to Central….

When all cylinders are NOT clicking (as in Turner pulls a “Scott” and goes cold) and Cat really TRIES too hard, we have issues.

The “friendly competition” between Cat and Tyler was MORE obvious. When Lacy got a really big “edge”, Cat looked like his old out of control and desperate self tonight. NOW, he had made GREAT strides, but he got out played (and out faked) at the end and turned over the ball.

Anya was a surprise start. And he did well….but he still does not have the stamina to run up and down the court….for 35 minutes.

Caleb Martin was a blessing. Des Lee has been in the dog house….or maybe he just got “outplayed”. I do not think that he played in the last game. He came in tonight and energized the defense. He missed a critical 3, but Gott game him one of the warmest “Atta Boys” that I have seen Gott give anyone when he shut down SF’s offense at the end. His 5 or so minutes were the difference.

My opinion…..it is OVER. We dodged a bullet….we need to improve….we got another opportunity to play against a zone….something that we will get almost every game….

Free throws…..Shmeee throws….I think that everyone is stressing way too much over it. It is now our own personal “albatross”. Gott has commented that if he keeps beating it….it will become a huge negative. We need a shrink to fix it. From what the announcers and the coaches and the players say, we can shoot them WELL in practice and Gott has “penalties” for missing such as running laps. We just need to get our head on straight. If we had put SF away, ala ORW and Mikey, then there would be NO mental pressure on making critical FT’s…

I wonder if there has EVER been a “FOUR Blocked Shots within one series” like we saw last night? That was unbelievable…and I was there.

It was an interesting game….off to a slow start…then turned into a rout…which is what we need. Mikey and ORW do it all the time to teach the “pups” the thrill of victory.

I had a copy of an old media guide on my phone and had looked up the most blocked shots in a game record. 9 was the record held by Fuller (V. William & Mary) and Bailey (V. West Virginia). Thurl’s record was against a WVU in the early 1982-83 (YES….THAT season…as in NCAA Champs). I can not quite follow the “syntax” of the statistics. However, we won 67 – 59 on a Neutral court. WVU later won their Conf Tournament and went to the NCAA and Lefty’s bunch knocked them out in the first round.

BJ’s record will go down in the books without an asterick….I LOVE to see him play and admire what he did in the off season. It will be interesting to see if he breaks one of the Season records or Career records for Blocked Shots..

    OK,
My take from the PNC last night. We looked solid in the first half. Played with intensity and poise. I DID note the Gott TO after the 6 points from CM’s little lapse of concentration. What was interesting to me, as we are in the club level looking directly down the scorer’s table with the Home bench on the far end….was the score board. I do not think that there was ever more than 2 points or so difference between Lacey and Barber when both were in the game. One got up a point and you could bet that the next time down, that the other would shoot or drive in order to get on the board.
Maybe that is what Gott wants, but it worried me a little. Interesting that Lacey started last night and Lee sat out. It was a very productive offense (and defense) for a while. BJ (the BEAST) looked a little slow and out of step. Abu (or Bobo….how about our Walt Disney Offense….Bobo and the Beast?) looked pretty good.
I did note the classes of the lineup. None of the Triumphant Triumvirate is on the court…Long GONE. And we have folks that were role players or almost “non-players” from last year that are supposed to be these talented leaders. We do NOT have the Coach K or ORW talent…so we have to excel at what we do best and hopefully not get mauled whilst doing what we don’t know how to do..
As in, the ZONE. YES, we will being seeing MORE of it. Gott even said that IF we playing us, the would run a fulltime Zone until something happened.
Turner was cool last night. He started a bit slow…then when the PRIDE (isn’t that a collection of hairy lions?) went “Z”….and I mean BIG TIME Z, it was like we were in the twilight zone.
YES, we did slap a few errant balls to the Pride….but we did have good hussle.
There was a time when I had the “OMG…NC Central all over again”, but they kept hustling and kept their poise (albeit NOT pretty at times) and were able to stave them off.
SO, a W is a W and their coach was right. We did get the upper hand….and that is what kept the score in our favor.
Would have thought a blowout, based on the first half….but did not leave early even to get the GK’s home earlier as it as school night. I really was worried during the 7 – 10 minute mark in H2..
BUT….Dontchaknow….The Tigs from Orange land went DOWN to the Wimpy Winnies of Winthrop. The W’s are now 5 – 34 in the ACC….

Actually, I believe that such happened in the 60’s. NOW, this is an urban tale. In the early 60’s the females in the cheerleading squads and majorettes were “protected”. Their parents actually did not let them travel with the bus of males. They either got private car transportation to away games or their parents provided it.

In the LATE 60’s, free love and whatever from UNC invaded our haloed campus. I lived in an apartment building close to campus and our parking lot was HUGE. However, the apartments next door had none…if any. One of the female members of the above mentioned organizations (I will NOT say which) often had large groups of the football players over for late night parties. It was rumored that she “KNEW” all three levels of each position as well as the special teams.

I was not inside….but I can also tell you that she did have friends and I watched the young ladies escort young males to OUR parking lot where they steamed up the windows….and then they, half an hour later, would escort ANOTHER male out….cycle was repeated. THAT is a FACT….

SO, we did have our own issues. However, over at UNC, they had this down to a more efficient process. Again, this comes from a UNC grad who was a manager of an athletic revenue producing team. He said that the recruits were “PROMISED” a Sweet Caroline if they came to UNC for the entire FOUR years. They also got to sample one during their visits and they got their CHOICE once they were on campus. There were “sorority” recruiters that had a LIST of young ladies and what “they” preferred. Sort of a an early paper version of Match.com. The coaches were aware. If a young male’s hormones were in check (or being relieved), then he could concentrate on his job more. In addition, he ran less risk of having to ply a young girl with alcohol (as well as himself) and did not have to start his moves as the bar was closing. Thus having a reliable supply of female companionship and also such that would actually “keep him in check” was GOOD.

AND there was NO shortage of recruits because you were in the “IN CROWD” of the high esteem BMOC. There was NOT such arrangements for the Chess Club or Debate Society.

Again, this was told by someone who did not BS…

    HrryHood,

Could not get the link to work….but here it is…yours probably has the BB player’s name.

    http://media.102jamz.com/a/99022771/3live-crew-interviews-tydreke-powell-of-unc.htm

That was entertaining…..and please, I am NOT a racist, but the elocution skills and enunciation of Tydreke Powell are perhaps NOT up to WRAL’s Jeff Gravely standards (who has a NCSU degree). You have to WONDER about what course he took…

I would think that a “communications” degree would have at least ONE or TWO courses in Public Speaking and basic grammar…

BUT, in his own street creed….he does lay it out. MAYBE there needs to PEER review so that student athletes like Tydreke get the necessary “remedial” help that qualifies them for UNC Courses….?

Alpha Wolf…..that about sums it up. I was thinking that if Bernie Madeoff is the epitome or “KING” of an Investment Flimflam, then Deborah Crowder is QUEEN of Academic Flimflams….

I usually check the Obit’s on the N&O (to see if my DW of 49 years has OTHER plans for me) and then their “opinion”.

This morning their “OPINION” or editorial is calling for “UNC Faculty Activism”. WOW, what a concept. I think that Dr. Larry (Saint to his friends and the 1990 NCSU Faculty Senate) Monteith has a new book out….

“Faculty Activism and Involvement for Dummies” It was written after the successful overthrow of Jimmy V’s empire where he did not foster the proper attitude and control over his team from both a moral and educational perspective.

    http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/11/09/4309336_faculty-needs-to-stand-up-for.html?sp=/99/108//&rh=1

You gotta love it….probably nothing will come of it….but hey, you never know…. if this were a stock or new “concept”…..will it be a FaceBook or MySpace?
