So next year are we expected to be a lot worse than our Sweet 16 team this year with a more experienced Cat Barber, Anya, Freeman, and Abu? That’s a pretty solid lineup if you ask me.

    Just a few cautionary notes:

    – Last year we had three true guards, and all could play the point. This year we have one;
    – We would not have made the NCAAT without Lacey;
    – Kyle Washington won a couple of games for us, and he is gone

I’m sure Gott will fill in a blank or two with a juco or grad transfer, but the pickings are getting pretty slim.

Basically we are one injury from disaster.

And to throw more tires on this fire, we most likely are losing Anya, Cat and Abu after the 2015 season.

I have steered clear of the ongoing questioning of Gott’s capabilities, and the job he has done up to this point, but something inside me says that had we beaten Louisville and moved on to the Elite Eight and lost there, we would still be having the same conversation about Gott. College basketball has changed drastically since State won a National Championship. Hell, our conference has changed drastically since then. Gott is four for four getting us to the dance and moving to the S16 twice. Shoot, in the 21 years before Gott we went to the big dance a mere six times. None of the three coaches prior to Gott had a winning conference record in their tenures, and the conference is arguably much tougher and more demanding since 2013. Gott is 92-52 (.643) overall and 39-31 (.557) in conference. We were 125-209 in the conference under Robinson, Sendek and Lowe. Personally, I look at Mark Gottfried as a stunning success so far. For him to be successful with four very diverse teams says that the man can coach, and coach very well, thank you. Counting his 3 years at Murray State and 11 years at Alabama, Gott has taken a team to the big dance 11 times in 18 years and is 371-206 (.643) overall. That doesn’t suck. Yeah I know, we all want to win conference and National Championships, but our expectations should be tempered with reality. Only one of 16 wins the ACC Championship and only one of 68 wins the National Championship. The odds are what they are. With the right mix of players those goals are not out of the question with Gott steering the ship, and I wont be surprised when that mix of players is on deck and more goals are met.

In your opinion, lets say Gott gets in the tourney next year, do you think he draws interest from another program?

Personally I think we have seen the peak with Gott and if the recruiting doesnt pick up then we are dead in the water.

Delete it then. Because I don’t like gott doesn’t make me some troll. That’s stupid. I don’t care for his representation of ncsu or his lifestyle.

I have the same reaction if it was Ole Roy or K- who gives a …

Never have flown much have you?

I flew for my job for 15 years and I never curled up in a ball on the floor. But then again I was never a drunk/hungover basketball coach either.

Theres a reason you have never seen K or Roy or hell anyone like that. We mocked Williams mercifully for the same thing.

I think he easily goes pro next year. I don’t see him transferring at all. Going pro now would be the ultimate example of the NBA being all about POTENTIAL, wouldn’t it? But guys at the end of the 1st tend to be dart throws, so why not a guy with a 7’9? wingspan who was arguably the best defender in the league last year, despite only playing 15-20 mpg?

Your post makes too much sense and makes me immediately sad that we are about to lose him as well.

This week was always the week we were gonna have to sweat out. The thing with Anya…total freak of nature, physically. Just takes one team drafting late to convince him they would draft him, assign a personal trainer, and develop him into a specialty weapon. He’s WAY more of an NBA prospect than Lacey, IMHO.

Wait, you think he is going pro? I just assumed he was transferring because he is unhappy for some reason. Him going pro now makes no sense at all. I can see next year but not now. Wow. So I think its easy to assume that after the 2015-16 season we are losing Abu, Anya and Cat. Assuming we stay status quo from here on out. Which I put at 50%. Damn we are going to suck in 2016

King Hippo! Beloved nickname for most beloved Beejay Anya. If he leaves, I will die of a broken heart.

I actually post as King Hippo on another site in his honor.

I cannot imagine why he is not happy. He should be a huge factor next season. If something happens to him then we seriously need to re-examine what the hell Gott is doing exactly. Like I said earlier I think all this is finished by the end of the day tomorrow.

I don’t think Cat would leave unless it becomes a “sinking ship” situation. That said, he has family responsibilities. That also said, he has a great all-around year and a guaranteed NBA contract allows him to legitimately meet those responsibilities.

Only a fool would project beyond next season anymore. I already feel stupid for projecting beyond last season.

Hindsight is 20/20, though it’s fair to say MG gambled and lost. I still say it was a logical gamble to take, if the program goes tits up, he will answer for it, so no reason to burn the place to the ground ahead of time.

In a sense, Rick and Dog are both right. Teammates and coaches first. Gott saw a group of kids who seemed to have real bonds to each other first and he thought he had a read on them that was apparently off (not wrt Angel of Death, in retrospect he clearly saw that train coming by the playing time reductions). But Almond Joy not listening to reason and King Hippo possibly following…that he didn’t bet on. It would be doomsday.

You have to place your bets somewhere, and take it like a man when it comes up snake eyes.

Yes, KH is who I was afraid about. Now that the name is in the public domain, I can say it. That would obviously destroy me on a personal level. I absolutely LOVE the guy. The other mods (and Dog) can attest that I brought his name up privately yesterday.

    who is KH?

I remember someone really jumping down my throat when I said we should expect at least one transfer given the numbers alone.
If you factor in early declarers that aren’t first round Gott is averaging almost 3 players a year leaving before their eligibility is up.

7 scholarship players is not good. No way you can spin it as anything but bad. This is also why you never want a recruiting class of zero.

2016 looks to be like a complete (blank)show unless something drastic happens

is Cat talking about going as well?

supposedly yes, we will hear today, rumor is Abu has already said next year is his last and there is some scuttlebutt from posters on PP that Anya is not happy.

Not a good situation at the moment but we will know everything by the end of tomorrow. This sucks and I hate the people that are saying that this happens to all programs because that is just an outright lie.

At this point I just want to see another ACC title in my lifetime. We had a good shot with this team a week ago.

Next year looks bubblelicious and then 2016 looks like a friggin nightmare. I hope those rumors from PP and the tweets are not real or we could be in real trouble next year. I guess we will find out today or tomorrow.

I am really really starting to outright hate Gott. Between his questionable off the court behavior, his lack of recruiting, his inconsistency during the season, his lack of maintaining a team or building positive chemistry or his lackadaisical approach to defense I am finding it hard to support this retard. I wonder when our fans and alums will wake up and see this cat for what he is? Is it going to take Cat or Anya leaving this year to wake people up? You can bet your butt that Abu is gone next year as well. The chemistry on this team is piss poor.

Henderson is a more athletic BSW. Steps right into the lineup.

Biggest issues are complete lack of PG depth and an injury or two would kill us. But our lineup 1-8/9 would be as good as almost anybody’s. I would seriously give us a puncher’s chance at a Final Four if we stayed healthy.

    PG – Cat
    SG – Lacey
    SF – Henderson
    PF – Frenchie
    C – KH

Bench – Twin A, Twin B, Abu, Angel of Death (if he comes back)

Henderson can play some 2, the twins can play anywhere from 2-4, which gives us tons of versatility EXCEPT at the point. Cat’s great, Lacey is sometimes adequate in short bursts.

I hope one assistant is scouring the country for the elusive Alex Johnson clone. Or alternatively, NC State’s version of Krieger is working on creating one.

Hence, thats the rub. We should be good next year, on paper we look awesome. But as NCSU fans we know the devil is lurking in the shadows

choppack1 wrote As for next year, we should enjoy this year because we simply don’t know what next year will bring..aside from what the experience of being a middle-aged state fan has taught me”

I understand the sentiment: when you think things are finally looking up NC State s*** happens.
Also, you are correct when you say next year looks interesting at best. Who replaces Turner and where is our recruiting going at the current time?

As some posters have said in this and other threads, Yow fired TOB for the exact same reason. Mediocre results, piss poor recruiting and a fan base that became uncaring. Couple that with her top 25, championship talk then next year is going to be interesting for a plethora of reasons. This was a big issue I have always had with Yow, whether it was in person or during press conferences, she has a tendency to run her mouth and not think before she speaks. See the Garry Williams/sabotage, national news article, etc. She puts herself in weird situations and next year may be awkward for all parties involved.

Oh, I like him as a player and hooe he stays. He can score – has range. But right now not nearly good enough a defender or rebounder. Clearly the 4th guy as the season has played out. I trust the staff on that one.

I hear you, I just think we need to keep everyone on the roster as it stands. With no recruits and the chance of injuries (which we miraculously avoided this year) its nice ot have some talented depth at the end of the bench if needed

I expect him to go after the season.

I’d be shocked if he stayed.

that would stink pretty badly. I thought he show some grit at times specifically the first duke game and I was under the assumption that freeman was the odd man out.

I’m having flashbacks to a Lee Fowler prediction that State would be one of the top teams “next year” because everyone was losing so much. That “next year”, State finished the year on the Herbble following a collapse of massive proportions.

If we finish on the bubble next year Yow is going to have to either eat her words about a top 25 program blah blah blah or make a tough decision. If Gott doesnt get it done next year then in reality when? She basically fired TOB for the same thing and was the reason Herb frustrated our fans to no end.

2015-16 is incredibly pivotal for gott and our program especially with our recruiting look like horse poo

ND and Louisville lose A LOT. The Holes weren’t really much account this season. I think Duke, UVA, and State will be the class of the league in 2015-16.

Duke could potentially lose 5 of their top 6 players if those kids all go pro like expected.

Top 4? What? Y’all are messing up the rotation. Puff puff give. Puff puff give.

care to explain why you dont think next year we should be in the top 4? Top ACC pg returning, top ACC shooting guard returning, size in the wings, since in the front court, depth, pretty much everything a team needs to be superior.

I just hope its not a rehash from year 2. I think however if we can put together a good to great season then 2016 recruiting can pick up and we can afford a blip in the radar if Cat leaves with Lacey. If not then I am not sure what our program will look like.

I wonder what is going to happen if we have a next year mirrors this season? Uneven play, bubble to the end? I think the fanbase may start to splinter.

As for the Gott bashers, where have you been the last couple weeks? This team has come around and grown up. Tonight was an egg but sometimes that happens. Even Archie Miller’s teams have had some eggs this year. For a guy who can’t coach, Gott is 4-2 against Williams, Pitino, Boeheim, and K.

we all knew this type of game was always floating out there

Its unbelievably frustrating that we could play as well on Wed but come out like we did last night. When the rubber meets the road his true coaching colors come out

I would love to see him here but it is not going to happen. He is going to get a big time job before Gott runs out his tenure.
Anyone who has seen his teams play knows he has it. Sigh.

Yep, his teams play all out. He reminds me of Tony Bennett lite. His teams seem to be gritty.

On the other site a couple of posters mention that he would never play for Yow. I have no clue if this is correct but does anyone know why that could be true?

The timing is going to happen where somebody big picks him up and we are stuck with Herbv2. Only at NCSU

Yea I think it dawned on me watching Gottfried’s post game with Julius the other night. “We’re gonna celebrate tonight”? I’m sorry, but what exactly are we celebrating? 8-7 in the ACC, still on the bubble looking in? Nothing’s gonna change in Raleigh until we stop celebrating victories over Duke and UNC. Maybe if I stop using unflattering nicknames for those teams and start treating them like any other team that we should just BEAT, just maybe we’ll actually start a culture of winning.

Did he really say that? Holy crap if thats true.

I like DD. I think he’ll be here a while. I think NC State basketball and NC State football are vastly different entities with different expectations. I know that DD is young and has a world of potential.

Having said all of that, I wonder if we’ve not learned something from our contract situation with Gott. Like we did with Gott after year 1, Deb’s signed an extension and raise based on “early returns.” Will we regret this move in a few years? I say the chances are less likely than with Gott, but it still makes one wonder……

I agree with this entire post. I think he is going to be successful but whats the rush to do this contract? He isnt going anywhere and if he has a great year next season and a big boy school still wants him this extension isnt going to matter. Just a bit of odd timing IMO.
