3 number one seeds have been upset in their conference tournaments. The bubble either just got smaller OR we know some of the teams that the bozo, talking-heads will be whining about. Gonzaga vs ST Mary’s today for another possible upset.

Buzz’s schedule was not quite Seth-bad (ie 300+); but a long ways from being good. This year, VT suffered the same mishap as Clemson…weak OOC schedule (ranked #255) and a poor performance against that schedule (8-5).

I started to list the smaller conferences that will still get multiple bids; but decided not to.

In the American, Cincinnati, Temple, and Tulsa are above the burst line on the Dance Card. If anyone else wins, then a bubble spot might disappear….but then that assumes that someone like Tulsa will keep their spot. In the end, I decided that there were too many moving parts to try and project all of the possibilities for all the mid-majors.

The Selection Committee does make mistakes from time to time. But the committee is made up of athletic directors and conference commissioners. I choose to believe that their goal is to give every team a fair chance; because they would want their team(s) to have that same fair chance.

I hope that they don’t listen to Lundardi because his goals are less clear and frequently look like he is just trolling for more clicks to this bracket.

I don’t always agree with the Dance Card either, but I do wish the committee would at least give it a glance as a quick sanity check on their decisions. If they had looked at it last year, they would have seen that their decisions on Temple and UCLA could probably use another check.

Chop’s vision represents my best-case scenario. Then 92owen lists all the reasons that the actual season could fall far short of that. It wouldn’t shock me if next year’s team fell short of the NCAAT again.

    So what do we do?

Now? Nothing. Gott has done more than enough to show some patience for one bad year. Other than the basketball coaching search, I’m not aware of any missteps on Yow’s part. Don’t forget that Woodson rejected a committee’s recommendation to replace Fowler and contacted Yow directly. There is no reason to think that he will replace Debbie without real justification….not just our speculation.

Miss the NCAAT next year and no improvement in recruiting? Time to make a change.

But State will undoubtedly end up somewhere in the gray area with no easy path forward.

I heard an interview with Feinsten several years ago when he talked about trying to do a biography on Dean. But Dean’s dementia had already progressed to the point that he couldn’t answer many of Feinstein’s questions…so Feinstein didn’t do the biography.

So it’s neat to see that he’s done something about K, Dean, and V. I’ll have to read it.

. Who in their right mind is going to sign up for a situation where their boss will definitely change in 2 years?

I could argue this from either side. For a successful coach, it doesn’t really matter who the AD is. And no coach is going to last long with mediocrity (unless Fowler finds another job) so it may not be a big deal. But it is important to know who you are working for and the unknown could easily complicate the coaching search.

But I just don’t see Woodson or Yow putting up with this level of suck for three more years.

Side note to all of this…Woodson’s current contract runs through 2019 too.

As for the letter that was one of the biggest PR gaffes that I have seen at this level and profile in some time…It was awful and only signaled that things were terribly of the tracks. It tells me that Gott wasn’t a candidate at that time, that Yow probably feels like he bailed her out, and that those two or linked for the duration of her time here.

I strongly agree with most of this and it pretty-well summarizes my feelings and why I don’t want to see Yow run another BB search. The last BB search was so bad (just being better than Fowler is not nearly good enough) that I don’t want to watch another one.

But I won’t go so far as to say that she will coast into retirement with Gott if he has more years like this one. This year was so bad that I really don’t think that she will sit around and watch this level of suck continue through 2019.

When I googled “debbie yow contract” to get the correct contract duration, I found an article from N&O in 2015 when she got an extension/raise:

There was more to the job and reaching that goal than she originally thought, Yow said Friday, but she was also proud of where the program is.

Seven of N.C. State’s 23 varsity teams have produced top-25 finishes thus far this academic year and the Wolfpack ranks No. 26 in the latest Director’s Cup standings. Not that Yow is ready to claim any kind of victory.

“I feel like we’re still a work in progress,” Yow said. “We don’t know where we’ll finish this year, but it’s going to be better and we’re making progress.”

And to Chancellor Randy Woodson’s approval, the progress in the athletics department has not come at a cost on the academic side. N.C. State has posted its highest scores in both the Academic Progress Report and the Federal Graduate Rate.

I think that it’s beyond doubt that Yow has brought mostly positive changes to NC State. But the last BB coaching search was not one of her high points.

Unless we have unexpected departures (read anyone but cat) – we should be good again and we will be perhaps his most talented team yet.

Color me skeptical. It wouldn’t shock me if next year was only marginally better than this one. It also wouldn’t shock me if someone else leaves early.

Pack IsnottA very good ACC team… When does football start?

Better find out if the Pack has a QB before you start wishing the summer away.

But that is more based on Gott’s past norms than anything else.

And the assumption that no one besides Cat leaves early?

I saw that State had new post-season uniforms. I’m assuming that we’ll see them for a game or two in the ACCT.

I don’t think we need our QB to be great this year, but they will need to be very good

Not much distinction there. I don’t ever remember State having a good year without a very good to great QB. (Though there are people around here that remember teams that I never got to watch.)

With State’s QB being a complete unknown, I expect State to be picked in the bottom half of the conference by the various media outlets. If the QB is not very good, then that is also where State will finish.

I think we’ve seen the ceiling of the Gott era

I said about the same thing about Sendek during the days of the Great Herb Debate. Since then, I’ve thought a lot about how to best use a coach’s past record to predict future performance. I’ve decided that the most intellectually honest approach is that once a coach has an established record in a P5 conference, you don’t necessarily know the best/worst record of the future…but consistent performance (at whatever level) is a good indication of the AVERAGE performance in the future.

Jerry Tarkenian is my own personal example. For years, I said that his run/gun offense would do well against lesser opponents during the season, but always fall short in the NCAAT. Most years, I was proven correct. But then he got Greg Anthony, Stacey Augmon, and Larry Johnson….all selected in the first 12 picks of the 1991 NBA draft. Tark’s coaching didn’t suddenly improve, but his talent level and ultimately his accomplishments sure did.

According to this link, a third loser tournament (for mid/low majors) already exists and a fourth one is being added this year.

New in 2016 is the Vegas 16, a 5-day postseason tournament featuring 16 teams playing all games in Las Vegas in the week leading up to the Final Four.

    http://bracketmatrix.com/nit

For what it’s worth, this site has Clemson, FSU, and GT in the NIT.

The Pack has been awful in a historically bad ACC.

I agree with the first half, but not the second. Hopefully, I’ll have more on that after the regular season concludes.

Agreed. But I’ll still be disappointed (but not surprised) if at least one banner doesn’t come down.

NCAAT men’s basketball championship banners coming down qualifies as “dropping the hammer”.

I doubt that anyone else would ever emulate State’s self-castration. And for sure, UNC isn’t going to do anything to themselves and will force the NCAA to levy the penalties.

I have no doubt that a number of programs will be hit hard by the NCAA. I’m less confident (but hopeful) that we will see banners come down in the Dean Dome.

State is two games behind FSU and GT and three games behind VT with three games left to play. State plays on the road against SYR and ND and hosts BC. So it is practically impossible to pass both FSU/GT and avoid ACCT Tuesday. An improbable tie against anyone wouldn’t help since State is 0-4 against FSU, GT, and VT.

His [Herb’s] recruiting was good though based on rankings, you cant argue that.

But how much do the rankings mean when the big wins don’t follow? Herb cleaned up against the bottom of the conference year after year and struggled against anyone that could be considered “good” (ie RPI Top-50). Teams moved beneath or above State in the conference rankings, but State was pretty consistent in years 5-10 (exception: #2 regular season finish in 2004).

The Great Herb Debate was driven by the issue of using present/past results to predict future performance. In other words, pretty much the same place we are today.

    VaWolf82

Herbert was winning and recruiting at a pretty high clip his last 4-5 years.

Better than his first five years?…yep.
    Better than Sid?…absolutely.
    Better than this year?…sure.

But if Herb had actually been winning and recruiting at a high level, then the Great Herb Debate would have never gotten started.
