^ you’re the selfish teammate if you don’t want the best scorer in country to shoot a lot. He has high FG percentage not many bad shoots like Kobe.

    Vandeburg has awful hands.

The V Tech and Pitt game was very evenly refereed. I focus on that aspect when watching neutral games just to help balance my bias when watching ours. Too bad we didn’t have good officiating when we played them.

Jim L is a hel of a coach to be 5 pt favorites against a team as talented as ours. Remember he’s working with a bigger rebuilding job than us without the talent. Amazing.

All else equal, I prefer the recruits come from NC, because it signifies a feasible and competent long term strategy. Sure a coach can get lucky and nab a top 20 FL recruit, but is that sustainable? Is that good strategy to fly down every weekend and recruit against better in-state schools? No. We didn’t need Amato to realize that. Red flags when the cloches rely on Catholic schools in Ohio or Florida scraps.

1- Cheaper to recruit both from coaches traveling and paying for in state scholarships. WPC must pay out of state dues for those kids FYI.
2- More sustainable to build relationships with high school programs and younger kids. Relationships drive (ethical) recruiting.
3- NC has the highest black southern population outside of Texas Florida and GA. Black players make up approx 70% of NFL yet 30% of population.
4- In state schools have a competitive advantage. Not using that advantage signals incompetency.

Seeing us dominate recruiting here signals a competent strategy that is the only real chance we have to build our program into a power. We are damn lucky to have a growing population and blessed demographic makeup. We spend our resources nurturing that benefit and we can become a power.

We need in state improvement next year. I’d be interested to see what % of top 30 recruits UF, Miami, Fl St, UGA, UT etc keep. That should be our benchmark. Steal some from the border states when possible. I have a vision this is a relatively simple enterprise.

As good as Seattle’s GM is, and despite having read and understanding the tenets of Moneyball, he will succumb to the NFL custom and award RW with a $100,000,000 contract. He will join an elite club of overpaid QBs: Flacco, Ben R. and Eli Manning, all of whom should bequest half their salary to those Super Bowl defenses that won them their wealth.

“Luck plays a large role in every story of success; it is almost always easy to identify a small change in the story that would have turned a remarkable achievement into a mediocre outcome.”

“Success = luck + talent; Great success = a little more talent + a lot of luck”

    – Daniel Kahneman

Congrats RW, you lucky SOB. Now donate some some of that 100mm to WPC.

Amazing how a woman who bats over 50% in coaching hires in a job with baseball averages is given such a short leash but the coaches are afforded significant latitude. I’ll refrain from going to my cognitive bias dictionary. Doesn’t seem fair tho.

Marshall is still there for the highest bidder. Pass. Could he recruit top 10 classes like Gott? I’m not sure. That was his Achilles heel. I won’t trade one flawed coach for another. Remember Gott had his team ranked #1 at Alabama and claims an Elite 8.

I’m realistic with Gott. He’s the best we had since V and has a high ceiling albeit with high volatility. Roy is an avg coach – which I define as within 1 st deviation around the mean – yet has rings. Caveat I don’t see Gott accumulating comaparable talent levels consistently.

Bottom line is I’ve seen enough of G to make a an unwavering assessment. If I’m Deb I keep him around until Archie, who appears to be a great coach and great recruiter like his brother, is ready. This may be sooner than we think. You don’t repeat history and watch a gem get hired to a bigger school. We’ll just keep banging our head against the wall…only if…Jimbo, Sean Miller.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchoring

Anyone who uses pre-season expectations or NC State’s previous 2 coaches to rate Gottfried is suffering from a cognitive bias called anchoring.

Gottfried is an average coach. He’s not awful like Sidney Lowe. He’s average. I don’t think he’s significantly better or worse than the majority of BCS college coaches.

The cream rises to the top however, and he certainly is in no way, shape or form a “good” coach.

He’s a really really good recruiter and average coach. We knew this when we hired him. A down year will be what you see – but make no mistake, about 20-30 coaches would have our team playing much better. More years than not we’ll have enough talent to make the dance and if we’re lucky, perhaps we’ll have the perfect mixture of talent and maturity to make a Final 4 run.

If you gave Gott 10 years I bet he could make one Final 4 run.

    Whatever.

I suggest Debbie keeps him a few more years until Archie Miller is ready. We may not have long until Archie is hired away and I Groundhog Day resumes as we bang our head on the wall AGAIN b/c we accepted the status quo. How’s Sean Miller doing at AZ…the same Sean we could have hired instead of LOWE?????

We need a good coach AND good recruiter to be the program most alumni aspire to be. At least Archie will inherit a talented class (like Gott) and rebuilding won’t be mentioned.

Let’s hope Debbie has the courage (and $) to can Gottfried sooner rather than later. If we’re lucky he’s hired away.

Could anyone imagine a Wes Moore coached team completely embarrass themselves such as Gott has done against Duke, UNC and UVA?

A good coach doesn’t get blown out by 20+ points multiple games (this qualifies despite final score).

Playing with house money today. Ten point dogs. Perfect game to play loose. Instead we play like our sphincters are sewn shut.

Note we are only ten point dogs bc Gott is at the helm not bc of insurmountable talent discrepancy.

Awful game plan and preparation. Average coaches won’t ever beat equal to higher talent without luck.

    Halftime stats:

UNC shooting 48 FTs for every 100 shot attempts.

NCSU shooting 17 FTs for every 100 shot attempts.

Cold hard facts. Grab a Coors and enjoy Kersey in 2nd half.

Didn’t watch second half but I’ve mentioned before that Lewis should get more minutes. Gott has to develop him he needs minutes to adjust to college it will take him longer.

It took Steve Nash 4 years in pros to make all star team (he was an “old” rookie at 23 to boot). Compare to Derick Rose/John Wall who didn’t bat an eye with athleticism adjustment in NBA.

The season should be played to develop and KEEP talent. We don’t have luxury to be cavalier and say. “screw kids if they want to whine about playing time let them transfer.” That is beyond lunacy.

We suck this year and NCAA is a long shot and even if we make it we will lose quickly. We just suck real bad it’s awful to watch. Not Sidney Lowe awful however. Silver lining.

This team has not improved all season. Very disheartening to see a team so young stagnate (arguably regress) since young teams should enjoy higher marginal rates of improvement.

I’m the new Noah and call it like I see it. Mark hit on my ex-gf in front of me (she was hot I can’t blame him everyone did). A trusted friend of mine drank with him and a dozen or more other “name” coaches in Wichita (or somewhere in midwest where NCAA offices are) at a hotel bar…they were ummmm, being disgusting men and hollering at women who walked by etc… Amusingly they were making fun of Brad Stevens who was siting along at a table “working” though who has the last laugh there…. I could care less about Mark’s moral compass if he wins.

To be fair, Mark was much more subtle about flirting with girls than Lee Fowler, who is a creepy pig blatantly hitting on 22 year old graduates I do draw the line there. Keep it middle/upper 20s and above.

Anyway game is blacked out in my area anyone know a site i can stream for free.

Is anyone really bored enough to watch this game? I might be too.

Any win we have this season is dumb luck combined with playing a crappy team. Without the mask of offensive firepower and top of the conference talent, the tide receded this year and exposed Mark’s coaching skills. Lets just say he overcompensates through booze and women. I should have gone into coaching.

His old white man dancing seems to amuse 18 year olds but personally I’m more amused by his coaching ability. You can’t ever take back the Duke and UVA games.

You can always tell who’s naked when the tide is at its lowest. Just because it goes back up doesn’t change the facts.

Cat’s development is very discouraging. Same can be said for Lewis but coach gave up on him.

K’s paradigm works like a charm against 95% of other teams.

    1) Get smart kids who can learn and develop in your system. Allows synergy.
    2) Get laterally quick players (usually) who can be taught to move their feet and play great defense.
    3) Get shooters.

    Secondary attributes:
    4) Get best athletes.
    5) Get length. (Roy, Gott and Calipari weight 4 and 5 much higher than 1-3)

Wow. We are making Duke look like an All Star team. We are playing and coaching right into their competitive advantages.

The cognitive bias phenomenon of “anchoring” has caused me to compare Gott to Lowe, which makes him look like a helluva coach. Now that I’m watching a very well coached team in Duke play a Gott team, I am enjoying the benefit of relativity. The contrast is stark and frightening.

1- why are our guards not coached to dribble into contact? If you haven’t painfully noticed…we have the quickest PG in the ACC yet he doesn’t draw many fouls when defended tightly away from the basket nor on drives. Even Vandy hasn’t learned in 5 years to maintain position when being hounded defensively on the high post. Sure they called a foul but the possession before he was falling away from the defender instead of standing your ground and drawing a foul…coaching.

2- we aren’t a good up-tempo team this year. Duke lacks a true post presence. Why are we having a track meet with them and playing into their strength? In fact one of our many weaknesses is ball control and turnovers. We should minimize possessions to have any chance.

Duke thrives off tempo, aggressive defense and just general chaos.

Gameplan: disrupt their essence by making the game half-court. Dribble and drive into their players ever possession. (our players don’t have that skill b/c they haven’t ever been coached to do so) Be physical inside and foul them hard when necessary.

Basketball coaching isn’t hard. Could you imagine if NCAA coach’s average IQ was 130 instead of idk…115.

Are recruits still going to UGA to be part of the most talented teams to never win anything?

If DD is only an average coach and can consistently recruit 20th ranked classes, we become a 20th ranked program.

Short term goal is to become a top 25 program in 3-5 years.

Medium term goal, is to remain a top 25 program years 5-10 years.

10+ year goal is to build upon the 20-25th ranked program. Utilize the 5th most talented state (behind CA, TX, FL & GA) in the country’s rich population and demographic resources. (in 10 years our population could overtake GA’s)

These are realistic goals assuming we have no major donors step forward and provide transformative gifts giving a competitive advantage.
