Pack Loses Thursday Off, ACC Loses Last Shred of Credibility

In the most incompetently officiated game I have ever seen, on any level…NC State falls to the 5th seed and 11-7.

Anyone who doesn’t want to leave this bullshit joke of a conference needs their head examined.

Not sure how you can watch that game, say it was inconsistently officiated. Poorly officiated, sure. But watch any NCAA game and you can gripe about officiating. Badly officiated, maybe; inconsistent, nope.

Called lots of ticky tack stuff against both teams. We benefitted as much as them. Our two best frontcourt players put themselves in foul trouble largely because they play defense with their hands, don’t move their feet well, and lose composure. Same ole.

ACC refs screwed up 5 fouls and you’re out. That’s about as basic as you can get and they couldn’t get that right.

I honestly have no idea what is a foul any more. I really don’t. The officials are that inconsistent these days. And when college basketball has become as Jay Bilas said “organized fouling” you end up thoroughly confused and frustrated. It has to be 10 times worse for the players and coaches.

I think that Gott just pressed the wrong buttons today, starting with pre-game practice on.

The team came out with a lack of urgency, it played without composure and his chess-match moves in a possession-game at the end were countered effectively each and every time.

Finally, however he has coached Leslie has been ineffective. It’s like he’s a more talented version of Bennie Bolton…

As I sit looking out the window on this beautiful day I can’t get too upset and have several thoughts:

    1. As a 5th seed we beat VT and maybe eak out a win against UVA only to be crushed by Miami.

2,In the NCAA tourney we head out west and maybe win the first round to be crushed by a middle of the road non top twenty five team in the second round.

3.Leslie and Brown return for their senior years. CJ begins to finally get it about March of 2014.

  5. BJD95 03/09/2013 at 5:13 PM #

Nobody’s saying we played WELL, or deserved to win. I’m just saying that we don’t know whether we COULD have played well, because the tone was set early (and kept that way) for something that did not even remotely resemble basketball.

There really was no way to adapt and play through that. None.

  6. Whiteshoes67 03/09/2013 at 5:13 PM #

On the bright side, team defense has improved.

  7. Wulfpack 03/09/2013 at 5:13 PM #

I also noticed some tension between some of our players. Leslie just has a bad attitude and Lo was on him. Then Lo got on Warren and Warren blew him off. Doesn’t look good.

We can still have a good ACC tourney even as a 5 seed, but something tells me Maryland is going to beat UVA. Keep the heads high and keep working. Now it is all about postseason play.

We’re not 20 points better than FSU (like the score indicated in the first matchup). This game was going to be close. Everyone knew it.

We got burned back-door a few times. Everyone gave up a layup.
Foul shooting sucked. Leslie didn’t show up.

We played fairly hard at times, but we got outhustled by a more determined team.

Talking about Leslie and Howell getting themselves into that position (fouls). A lot of focus on accountability on being able to work through “adversity.” We’ve got to be better talk. He talked in code and there was the usual coachspeak. I betcha his conversation with Yow is much different.

Howell had a poor game, but the kid has been more than accountable through the season.

Leslie on the other hand…well, I have said since the OK State game that when he leaves it will be addition by subtraction. And if he thinks that NBA scouts aren’t seeing his antics — the airball jumpers, the turnovers, the sixth grade level of free throw shooting, he’s utterly insane. The best thing he could do would be stay in school and get his s**t together. I’m somewhat worried that’s what he’ll do.

In short, Leslie has the physical ability of an NBA all-star and the basketball IQ of a middle school player. He seems to be uncoachable.

I second the handsy, no foot movement, frustration foul defense sentiment. The worst is when you see Rich get mad at something and absolutely knowing without a shadow of a doubt that he is going to commit a frustration foul on the next defensive possession, which is exactly what he did on that lunge that picked up his 3rd. CJ does the same thing, only he makes it worse by tossing in the occasional frustration tech, which should probably be called more often, to be honest. So frustrating…

Whiteshoes, it’s not just the number of fouls in the boxscore. It’s when and who the fouls are called. It’s player combinations. It’s timing.

We were done early in this game. It was not an evenly called game even when I was listening to it on the radio. If you call a certain type of foul at one end, how about the other? That’s another difference in this game.

  12. BJD95 03/09/2013 at 5:16 PM #

It’s inconsistent when they call touch and ghost fouls, but not what would be criminal assault on the streets.

I suppose we could have adapted by literally body slamming guys, but otherwise giving a 5-foot buffer?

No prob Muffette, my love is unconditional.

I get pissed at my wife and kids, dogs and cat, too. Still give’em hugs and biscuits.

  14. WeAreCured 03/09/2013 at 5:18 PM #

The obligatory CJ travels and goal-tends are quite frustrating as well.

  15. Whiteshoes67 03/09/2013 at 5:18 PM #

I see the CJ situation a little differently. I’ve been a critic, but I know there’s no way we’re where we are as a team or program in 2 years with Gottfried without CJ Leslie.

Biggest problem, he has a little hangdog in him. When things don’t go his way, rather than gritting his teeth and fighting, he folds. Not as much as 3 years ago, but it’s still there. The loss of composure today was huge, but I’d rather see a Leslie that fights with that intensity than the one that coasts. The latter we’ve seen too much as well.

Leslie came out playing really hard today, like the WFU game.

  16. DrWuffette1day 03/09/2013 at 5:19 PM #

Howell was getting killed. So was Leslie. Then they get called. Hmmm, no.

It wouldn’t have been so bad if they just would have got their money’s worth with their “fouls.” Again, they didn’t have a chance. I stand by the kids on this one.

  17. Wulfpack 03/09/2013 at 5:19 PM #

And yes, I am MORE than ready to leave this crap conference. It has basically become the Big East. No thanks.

  18. swamppack 03/09/2013 at 5:19 PM #

Plywood- Try this on for size. Not only were we pathetic on our own, I hope Gott doesn’t have the same attitude about the game or officiating as you have. WE lost that game and a lot more just like it THIS year.

  19. Alpha Wolf 03/09/2013 at 5:19 PM #

All I know is that if Lutz leaves as some say will happen, Debbie Yow needs to absolutely insist that Gottfried hire a defensive guy who drills fundamentals like a Marine basic training instructor.

  20. Khan 03/09/2013 at 5:21 PM #

We should have started the second half with the line-up that left the floor at the end of the first….you know, the one that got us back in the game. Oh yeah, and this should be read and re-read:

“Well said! Why people keep blaming officials is beyond me. We have the MOST experienced team and probably the MOST talented…in a down league…and we go 11-7? FSU was playing freshman for Pete’s sake! In a very needed game, we just didnt show up. We had a terrible game plan and got out-coached by Leonard Hamilton and out-played by freshman. Officiating may have sucked, but why is it that the margin for error for us is constantly so slim with 2 seniors and 2 first round draft picks in our starting 4?”

  21. Gowolves 03/09/2013 at 5:22 PM #

Gottfried, just want you to know we are all counting on you.

  22. WeAreCured 03/09/2013 at 5:24 PM #

Technically, BJD, the criminal charge would be battery, not assault, as battery is an offensive or unwanted touching, but assault is creating a reasonable apprehension while not touching. In hoops, assault is good, but not battery.

    ; )

  23. Whiteshoes67 03/09/2013 at 5:24 PM #

The fouls were called consistently. Ticky-tack stuff across the board, the whole game, starting with about 2-3 minutes in. Some were arguably ghost fouls. But after the incident where there was chatter among players, they called it really tight. Hell, FSU’s Ian Miller and Brandon fouled out after playing 37 minutes combined. As for why their starters weren’t whistled nearly as much, Ojo only played four minutes, they play a deeper bench.

We’re a finesse team, we benefit when the whistle is kept in the pocket. But there was hardly an consistent ignoring of routine body slamming and body snatching that some of you allege. Ridiculous.
