Pack Loses Thursday Off, ACC Loses Last Shred of Credibility

In the most incompetently officiated game I have ever seen, on any level…NC State falls to the 5th seed and 11-7.

Anyone who doesn’t want to leave this bullshit joke of a conference needs their head examined.

When your big guys are on the bench, the game is not going to go well. I checked out early too – listened on the radio while running errands and shopping. This was a train wreck. Refs weren’t going to allow us back. This team willed itself back but they really didn’t have a chance. No momentum.

G’s after-game chat was totally different than what I was expecting.

inhoc is right…you have to adjust to the way the zebras are calling the game.

Typical whining about officiating. 22 fouls per team. Whistles were pretty consistent. Our play and coaching were not.

The 2nd foul and technical on Calvin were unacceptable. The third on Richard was unacceptable. On the CJ foul, he had the trap set, but he reached and slapped at the ball, got whistled. Richard picked up this third near half court, after his teamate already had two. Stupid. Then, if you have 3, you absolutely cannot pick up a cheap 4th. What does Leslie do? Picks up a cheap 4th.

Now, I’m gonna rant againt Gottfried. This game reminded me of the regularl season UNC and Duke games last year, where foul trouble against our frontcourt hurt us. Those games, as this one, was critical. We’re not a bubble team but playing for seeding. Once your players get in foul trouble, you have the luxury of sitting them for only so long. At the 10 minute mark, you could clearly see this game unraveling. We had a frontcourt on the floor or Vandenburg, Wood, Brown, and a backcourt of Lewis and Purvis. Never ever should’ve happened.

Keeping your best players on teh bench in the second half of a critical game, when the momentum changes, is unacceptable. It’s like lagging a putt for the win, or TOB and his punting on 4th and 1 on the 50 with 2 minutes to go at Clemson. It cannot happen. To top it off, Gottfried had the wrong personnel in at the end the game. We had virtually no players on the court to give fouls. Was he hoping for the steal? Really? Put Purvis and Lewis or somebody in besides your point guard to foul. Purvis wasn’t even in with 20 seconds to go when you needed a three….And there was a stoppage in play….I could go on

“we suck and look pathetic without the offial’s help”

That’s just a dumb comment. IMO, the officials sucked in all aspects. State doesn’t need their help, they need them to get out of the way. Let the players call their own fouls and State wins by 20. Good refs set the tone early and make consistent calls – these guys had no clue and it showed in the lack of flow.

That said, State did commit some dumb fouls and had their opportunities at the line.

Hilarious eas! Hamilton doesn’t coach a lick! That dude with the goatee does everything and Leanord just stands there.

Refs were terrible. Nothing else to say there.

We were also terrible. Zo played like crap. Leslie mine as well should have stayed in Raleigh. Kid can’t even shoot a free throw after three years. Warren and Howell were solid. We lost the game when we got in foul trouble and Vandy had to come in. FSU exploited him and got back int the game.

I will still be cheering for Maryland. Still a chance at the four seed. But this will hurt our NCAA seed if we can’t pick it up in the ACC tourney. Get in foul trouble and this team is screwed. Doesn’t bode well for tourney play. Disappointing loss. 11-7 for this squad is very so-so.

What did he say in the post-game Wuffette?

  7. Alpha Wolf 03/09/2013 at 4:54 PM #

BTW, the rugby match on BBC America had less contact and pushing and shoving today.

My only wish is that Vandenburgh would get a tight end type of foul once in while…just to send a message. If you’re going to get a whistle, knock the breath out of their players…if that’s the way they want to play.

Officiating was bad but we were even worse. Coaching, FT shooting, ball-handling, critical defensive/rebounding lapses. CJ would have served the team better if he just stayed in Raleigh. What a liability. A great team would have taken care of business today. A disappointing end by an underachieving team to an over-hyped frustrating season. I have very low expectations for the ACC/NCAA tournaments. I could see us make a quick exit on Thursday vs. the 12 seed and then lose the 8/9 matchup in the NCAA. Go Terps……. If it makes a difference.

  9. BJD95 03/09/2013 at 4:55 PM #

Incompetent officiating from start to finish. Calls against both teams were bad. They called touch fouls and “no touch” fouls…and then swallowed the whistle on near body slams. Either team should feel cheated with a loss, because that’s not basketball. That kind of chaos certainly benefits the less skilled team, though.

I am so mad I can hardly see straight. This will also dislodge us from our groove, for when NCAAT play starts and games are officiated normally.

Wasn’t Ray Natali one of the “KH tape” three?

  10. Alpha Wolf 03/09/2013 at 4:55 PM #

Oh and let’s not forget that Leslie had a couple of his customary airball 15 foot jumpers.

NBA skills, my foot. I should mail him a pair of tweezers so he can pick out the pine splinters out of his ass from the NBA D-League…if he makes that. I predict Italy or Spain is in his future.

Bench to be commended for their first half play, keeping us in the game. Warren nearly had a double double, held his own inside despite little help. Tip of the cap to him.

You can always tell who the old guys are on this board. Such cranks-probably Cousin of the Cletus Pack fan who got ejected.

  13. Alpha Wolf 03/09/2013 at 4:58 PM #

IMO, the officials sucked in all aspects. State doesn’t need their help, they need them to get out of the way.

Didn’t help CJ when he was gang-tackled under the basket at the end of the game.

The refs can call a game tight, they can call it loose, but they absolutely must call it consistently.

  14. Whiteshoes67 03/09/2013 at 4:59 PM #

I HATE SITTING PLAYERS ON THE BENCH IN THE SECOND HALF BECAUSE THEY HAVE 3 OR 4 FOULS. If they foul out, so what. No worse than sitting them. CANNOT STAND IT. Early in the season, maybe, see if you can develop some bench, rest your guys. But late in the season playing for seeding, or in last year’s case, playing for a NCAA birth, you don’t sit starters for that long. Ever

  15. BJD95 03/09/2013 at 5:01 PM #

Yeah, I don’t see how you can adjust to the way it was officiated. Consistent either way, you can and must adjust. Though tight whistles are extremely challenging for us to deal with. But this veritable circus – no way. It was incomprehensible.

MG did one thing really wrong, having Zo in the game when he knew we had to foul. That was insane.

  16. Pack Mentality 03/09/2013 at 5:02 PM #

We would be a better team with a 6 man rotation without Leslie.

  17. Alpha Wolf 03/09/2013 at 5:02 PM #

I have to agree with your Whitehorse, that was a poor sequence by Gottfried at the end. Heck, he almost didn’t have Lewis — who DOES have a three-stroke — in at with less than a minute to go.

  18. Whiteshoes67 03/09/2013 at 5:04 PM #

Not sure how you could watch that game, and at least not see that the officiating was consistent. 22 fouls per team. Lots of ticky tack stuff from near the start. We’re a finesse team, so of course it benefits the hackers, but it was consistent. We just shit the bed.

  19. BJD95 03/09/2013 at 5:04 PM #

And we absolutely are NOT better without Calvin. That is as nuts as saying that the incompetent, inconsistent zebras had no impact.

Games like this make me realize:

“I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue!!!”

It looked like a rugby match and after seeing years of bad officiating at the most untimely of times, I can’t help but think how interesting it is that today, we had a first round bye on the line and the game was officiated the way it was. FSU (as did GT last sunday) were playing football as much as bball today. Yes, fouls were 22-22, but we had our top 4 players with 5, 4, 4 and 3 fouls.

With that said, we did our fair share of contributing to that mess today. I am glad to see that several of the guys have improved as the season has gone on. Warren and Purvis have really improved in all areas (including FT %), as has Tyler. Those guys also seem to not be impacted by in game adversity as some of our upperclassmen, so I’m looking forward to the future.

  22. DrWuffette1day 03/09/2013 at 5:06 PM #

Talking about Leslie and Howell getting themselves into that position (fouls). A lot of focus on accountability on being able to work through “adversity.” We’ve got to be better talk. He talked in code and there was the usual coachspeak. I betcha his conversation with Yow is much different.

All good and well for a bland post-game interview but it’s hard for a team to implement under the circumstances. We should not have been IN those circumstances.

Agreed with the BJD and Rick’s comment that Gott should of extended himself and gotten a tech. We were not going to win that game. Our players were completely out of flow.

A Coach Gott tech would have been a good thing entering into the ACCT. He’s acting like a championship coach. It’s classy but we (our team and program) are not there yet. Maybe he has a special lesson he wants to drive home or it’s mentality prep for the upcoming tournaments. I dunno.

Thanks to those who realize the loss is squarely on the team in red. Not the team in stripes.

After that jackass fan’s court display, I can’t handle much more bleacher jock embarrassment.

    From friends, no less.

I tried watching a couple of times and couldn’t stomach both our play at times, and the usual horrible officiating. This game should have and could have been won in spite of the refs. As bad as they were they did not cost us the game but I am sick and tired of the acc refs allowing football games on the BB court. I am also sick and tired of this team with all kinds of talent finding ways to screw up opportunities like they had today.
