The worst part of that holding call was there was at least one other holding call on the same play. Ridiculous.

I began listening near the end of the first quarter, and Tony Haynes mentioned on the radio that holding was NOT going to be called today. I’ve noticed that on EVERY stretch play Pitt has run, their blockers have handfuls of State jerseys between the numbers. The ‘pick’ play call was the worst I’ve seen. Holy schamoly. Defense needs to get a turnover.

Va Tech and UN* in 2015 are just two examples of complete absent quarters of football under Doeren. I don’t know how you can call yourself a decent coach when this seems to happen with regularity in ‘must-win’ games.

Among the many negatives to take away from this game, the biggest one has to be the lost 3rd quarter. I will be researching this soon, but it seems in every game the team decides to be completely lost/disinterested for an entire quarter giving up multiple scores while not scoring on offense. South Carolina scored two touchdowns in the 3rd while NC State managed about 20 yards of offense during the same timeframe despite receiving the ball first. During Doeren’s tenure this complete lack of focus for a 15:00 stretch should be the reason he is fired at the end of the season. How is it in year 5 with a senior-laden squad (2nd-most 4th and 5th year players) does this continue to happen? We’ll have a 7-win season, maybe 8. But fully expect to see another complete wasted quarter in several games this season. Not sure my BP can take many of these.

I can’t give Dave Doeren credit for slow-playing his hand. The Cerberus running game should be in order for the 4th quarter.

Tackling shouldn’t be an issue for a DC in year 5 and many multiple-year starters. But, yet … we are NC State.

Even more disturbing is the tackling ability of our defensive players is awful. South Carolina doesn’t miss tackles.

Fortunately, the Columbians only had TWO open receivers on that TD play. Our defense is playing well below anyone’s expectations.

We gained over 300 yards of total offense in the first half. Got to force more than two punts to win this game in the second.

I saw this on TOS and thought it would be enjoyed here. I agree with this dude. We can’t give up the fight for the story.

This is my response to a link posted on Facebook to a high school colleague and UNC fan (not alum). This short discussion is more reason than ever that our posts and threads must continue against the PR machine employed by the BOG and UNC.
My response is to the posting of a link to Amazon Video of “Unverified” to which I respond:

    BenStoneSays:
An interview with Jay Bilas is included in this film. He has firsthand knowledge of the scandal, right?

    Wal-marter:
    More than most

    BenStoneSays:
This film must be Chapter 2 of the ‘redemption’?

    Wal-marter:
    Chapter 1 actually ?

    BenStoneSays:
Of course. Three investigations (two done internally and paid for by the University) obviously were prejudiced against the University.

    Wal-marter:
I’m not going to debate. Stuff happened. Just ready for NCAA to rule and move on. I didn’t trust them before this and won’t after this. So nothing changes for me.

    BenStoneSays:
So why are you waiting for them to rule if you do not nor will not recognize their authority?

    Wal-marter:
It’s not up to me to do anything. Plus, they don’t have the authority to handle academic issues which is what they are trying to do. Just like the Penn State case they are overreaching and in the end they will not make anyone happy because Carolina will have dealt with years of embarrassment and the banners will stay right where they are. Honestly, no one against UNC cares unless men’s basketball gets hurt and I don’t think that happens.

    BenStoneSays:
Academic eligibility is not within the NCAA’s purview?

    Wal-marter:
The NCAA is an athletics organization. The academic boards are the ones who judge the academics and they haven’t removed any type of certification. It is what it is. Things were done that shouldn’t have been, but it has not been proven to be an athletics doing to this point. Were athletes involved in the classes/department in question? Yes. But it has not been proven to be specific to athletes only. Whether people like it or not, regardless of what the NCAA does or does not do, Carolina has been punished. There will be a punishment in some form by the NCAA, but it won’t matter to the ABCers unless men’s basketball gets hammered. Like it or not that is the truth!

    BenStoneSays:
2 Final Fours and a National Championship. I’m sure most teams would love to be so punished.

    Wal-marter:
    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
BTW, none of these players had anything to do with what happened so don’t waste your time with that.

    BenStoneSays:
Who was it that mysteriously ‘found’ some additional violations in August of 2015? Was that UNC? http://www.espn.com/college-sports/story/_/id/13437563/north-carolina-tar-heels-uncover-potentially-more-violations-academic-scandal
    http://es.pn/1IOkD8z

    Wal-marter:
Did you see anything about men’s basketball in that article? I have said from day one that women’s basketball was in big trouble because they had direct contact with what had happened. I’m pretty sure that same person helped in men’s soccer so i’m not surprised that they will be in for some issues.

    BenStoneSays:
Read the second paragraph, which clearly states “Its [UNC’s] response to the NCAA, due next week, will be delayed.” If men’s basketball would not have been affected by the NCAA’s ruling, why would UNC delay their response? Second, if men’s basketball wasn’t involved, why did the NCAA issue a third Notice of Allegations that does mention men’s basketball?

    Wal-marter:
My fault. I quick skimmed and didn’t see that. However, No facts. Just guesses. I’m done. You have your view and I have mine and it doesn’t matter anyway because we aren’t in charge either way. Only fact I know for sure is as of Monday night we are the national champions in 2017 and that is really all I care about at this point.

    BenStoneSays:
    The Carolina Way.

    Wal-marter:
Whatever man! It is what it is.

With all the petulance I can muster, The Miller family is dead to me. Let Archie have IU or OSU. Let Sean continue to prosper in ‘Zona (if he is hired at UN* color me shocked … no way he passes Jordan’s approval). I’m hoping like crazy Keatts gets ‘Zona and Dayton on the schedule and soon. I want Keatts to succeed highly and to rub the Millers’ noses in our success. If you’re not on board, tough excrement. Stop donating, stop watching and stop blogging.

A diatribe: (No. 3241543 by my count)

    1) It is quite disappointing that Archie isn’t coming, but I don’t want a coach (alum or not) who isn’t 100% committed to being here long-term. I hate that Sean (and/or Dad) Miller played a role in this, but they are looking out for their brother/son. No reason to fret over that.

    2) Take solace in the fact that DY has at least ONE coach who is willing to say yes, AND that coach will be solidified shortly. This is a vast improvement from the last two coaching searches.

    3) Reminders of neighbors who have “made their big hires”:
Va Tech went through two years of James Johnson after ten years of Seth Greenberg who still has the last NCAA tourney win for Va Tech before getting Buzz, who lost in the First Round.

Wake Forest has Danny Manning now after four years of Jeff Bzdelik (No NCAA appearances) and three years of Dino Gaudio–both of whom were nowhere near the success of Skip Prosser.

Maryland has Mark Turgeon, who has won only three NCAA games in six years there. (Yes, they moved to the BigTENORMORE.)

Clemson is still not as good under Brad Brownell as under Oliver Purnell, and could possibly be ready to make yet another change. Larry Shyatt had his chance as well, and that wasn’t so great.

Georgia Tech stumbled through the 11 years of Paul Hewitt and then paid Brian Gregory to coach five years, before finding Josh Pastner, who appears to have them headed in the right direction.

Virginia has a laundry list of failures (Jones, Gillen, Leitao) until Tony Bennett arrived (and he may be looking to move now if the rumors are true).

Pitt is now in a funk with Kevin Stallings after Jamie Dixon kept the program going as strong as Ben Howland left it, but bolted for TCU.

Miami suffered through Leonard Hamilton, Perry Clark and Frank Haith before Larranaga (who is close to 70).

Florida State has been through 15 years of Leonard Hamilton and have one ACC title to show for it.

Louisville, Syracuse, The Asterisk and Duke are the exceptions, not the rule.

    4) Young coaches (unproven by the standards of the league) were exactly what Jim Valvano and Mike Kryzewski were when hired. Both turned out pretty good. But nothing they accomplished at their prior stops were ‘worthy’ (according to even my own unrealistic expectations) of the jobs they were given. Yet they excelled.

    5) Tempering expectations is the least fun part of being a fan. It doesn’t mean that we lower them, regardless of who is announced as the next coach. All of us agree that the bar is quite low given our last two seasons. I’m personally looking for much more effort and a team concept that seems engaging. The beauty of V’s teams was their flexibility. He could beat you with star players but he could also make adjustments and win with lesser talent (1987, for example). I’m hoping the next coach has that ability to see the game and get his players to adjust to the situation. That’s what it takes to win consistently in this league.

    6) My own take is that Keatts is probably the better recruiter and Wade is probably the better X-and-Os coach based on my viewing of the coaches and their teams in action. Let’s hope whichever coach we get (either of these or someone else) can improve on their weak areas quickly given the new home. From my own perspective, this is much like a choice between ice cream and cake; both are excellent desserts (take it from me, I’m quite rotund physically), but in this case we’ll be saddled with only one. Let’s enjoy it and not complain about what we don’t have.

A few observations that WERE NOT previously enumerated:

    1) Complaints/nasty faces … DSJ and Ted are going to end up losing us a game or two, not with their play, but with their attitudes and ease at being goaded into contact with another player. There are many instances where DSJ is allowing an opponent to get to him. This will only increase during the conference season as coaches direct their ‘mix-it-up’ guys to needle DSJ.

    2) I was shocked to the core to see our players actually MOVING WITHOUT THE BALL during the second half. I know that offense is not where we need more immediate attention, but movement without the ball is going to generate much more for our three guards as more and more teams go to a zone defense.

    3) Henderson found the gaps … Also in the second half, Henderson found the little spaces in the 2-3 that he used to get off quality shots. Markell and Torin can be the same type of shooter, not necessarily a Mav streak shooter, but a consistent threat to keep those other teams from living with the zone as the trump card for our offense.

    4) Gott shaved? Usually I know this statement is usually a porn site search parameter, but I figured I would mention it. (You’re welcome, BotB!)

    5) I’m willing to give a little leeway for Gott not pulling Abu or Henderson quickly after both had complete meltdowns during the game and either turned the ball over or was lost on defense (it seems both have this particular penchant), took stupid shots, etc; but if the depth is there, you have to sit those guys. Boneheaded plays like Abu’s in the 2nd half will cost us a huge win in league play.

I’ll impart my tale, though bereft of the style, muscle-memory and allure of CD’s. My formative years were spent in High Point; my father was a furniture factory worker and a life-long State fan. He played football at Grimsley, finished in ’67 and Extra-E Earle and Lispy Lou were his favorites, though his real affinity lay with Stormin’ Norman and the State roundballers.

David Thompson and Tommy Burleson were the heroes of my bedtime stories. Hardly a baseball game went by without the mention of Tim Stoddard (another star of the ’74 team) and my father reminding me of his days as a Power Forward under Sloan. So the stories are what made me a State fan. My contempt for blue was built much later, in adolescence and in maturity.

I got to Raleigh, living my father’s dream, in ’95 staying in the left ‘L’ for two years before getting re-located to AFC. Most of my anger and vitriol was made during the Sendek/O’Cain years with wonderful memories like: the Charlotte horse-collar, Kevin Matier (whom I knew personally) and the worst no-call prior to TA’s TD, the ESPN/Local Media ‘Know-your-Regional-Role’ campaign, Luke Buffum’s in-bound pass stolen away twice, etc.

After graduating, I got into media and broadcasting, and found much of State fan’s anger with equal representation much more accurate than they knew. Local radio was in fact the worst, and remains so to this day in every market in NC. As much as a story defines a culture, never has this been more true than for the tale of baby blue. What’s worse, and what continues to stoke the coals of my ire, is Blue’s successes are still regarded equally with other schools’ successes and/or failures. Despite public record proving that much of the blue’s victories came on the backs of ineligible players or coaches/administrators/staff/faculty that knowingly defied the rules, the full ramifications of those revelations have received very little honest discussion or debate in the local media. Now that I reside in GA, their local media provides a pleasant break from the white noise of “Carolina’s top-5” and “Marcus Paige is smarter than other basketball players.”

Geography isn’t enough (I know that MJ knows this to be true) to separate me from my dislike, distrust, disassociation with The Asterisk. I cannot tell you what my speed record is of correcting someone who attempts to congratulate ‘my Tarheels’ on a victory. I usually can stop them from finishing their sentence, but sometimes, I just retort “Congratulate someone else, like Charles Manson for teaching knife-wielding.”
