Sounded like Gott hoped Mav would play but didn’t, so would be interested to hear what happened there.

I do think Mav and 7 will make a difference with rebounding and depth. We’re essentially 6.5 players deep right now and really scrapping for rebound. Should be a nice boost and hopefully Mav is OK.

Second game in a row where Kapita has essentially the same stats as Abu without the turnovers and with less playing time. Pita actually has offensive moves that take him to the rim. He also gets ghost fouls like The Beard. He is your next Howell. Play him.

Was in the stands today, as usual. The advertised (SOLD) attendance was over 15K. There MUST have been a lot of people that needed to wash their hair this afternoon as I think less than 10K (if that many) showed up. The noise level was “yawning” of the Wolf-O-Meter.

Good news was that most folks brought a LOT of toys (Toys for Tots Day). There was almost $10K donated….WPF are generous and caring….The lady Marine said that there were more checks this year, as I handed her ours….and fewer Greenies….and it counted up.

A buddy in front of me yelled….”Where the HELL is our defense?” My wife quipped….”Bobby Lutz packed it up and it left when he did….”. Now, I do have a slightly non-objective opinion of Bobby….he is from my home county and shares, very passionately, my political viewpoints….based on a few “funnies” that I got in emails from him.

However, he was the DEFENSE. When we went to our Zone Junk and one of the coaches was directing traffic earlier, I had some faint hopes. Now having a good defense is about as likely as Jill Stein getting HRC elected….

Wonder if Jim Harrick is “consulting” on that. He has been at every game (including the trip to the Virgin Islands).

Maverick was in a “warmup” today….not an NCSU issued one, but a Red top and Black bottom sweat suit. Each game costs us development. He will be out of sync and also not physically conditioned. I CERTAINLY do not want him back until ALL the folks clear him….but he will take a while to get back up to speed.

Yurtseven….Only saw him twice in the Exhibition games. By the time he hs cleared, he will be a month behind….so I do NOT hold out much hope of him being the “Silver Bullet” that we will need. (Is it OK to say that today?) YES, we need some big MAN help, but he looked a little perplexed about “How you play the college” game” Will have to adapt to Gottfried’s style….which seems to NOT include defensive drills.

Teddy the Terrible. He played 17 minutes today. He fouled out. I was doing a mental count or clock each time. He hit my average of about 3.5 minutes per foul. SO, he was effective, but we need him out there more. He needs to DOUBLE his Minutes per Foul stat.

Dorn and Henderson were awesome. Smith was a little streaky….and finally came around. He DID play the Offense in the closing minutes and NOT to decide to do his ATLAS routine (like Cat and CJ) and “carry” the team and drive and jive on every play. Johnson was cool and effective. Needs to work on scoring…but very quick and has a nose for the ball.

Abu was off a little, but played a pretty solid game. We are STILL short….on depth that is.

BJ, what can I say. He did a “Lurch Hook” today….NOT to be confused with a Jump Hook. He did not clear the floor by more than a genital hair’s width….and there was NO thud when he came back down. FACTOID….Our two lightest players are Corch and Cameron (GOTT). They weigh 363 Pounds. By the end of the season, BJ will have taken his roster weight of 344 and surpass them. SO, we have ONE player that will be equal to TWO OTHERS….

Speaking of Cameron and Corch. We should have had in the scout team at the 5 minute mark with a 20 point lead over BU. Instead, we allowed them to make it a game and scare the digesting overpriced PNC food out of us….

The opening games are NOT giving me much to cheer about….I am updating Santa’s list as we speak….I gave up personal items and, for the good of NCSU, am asking for things like “BB Defense 101 Videos” for every squad roster player…and the “Dummies Guide to BB Defense….Advanced Course” series for Coach Gottfried.

Will Clemson hang on against VT? Probably. Mr. Shoe In Heisman, Bo Jackson’s kid, is NOT playing in the ACC Championship game…

Jumped in late on this thread and this may have been noted already but didn’t take time to find out. I think it was obvious that Gott was going to play Ted until he fouled out. Teaching moment. This kid has a abundance of energy and can direct it once he settles down. He is raw when it comes to knowing when to play with with more control and when to get after it. His two fouls against Illinois early were really over agressive when he had no chance to get the rebound. This will get better as gets more playing time.

As far as Abu goes he cannot play the top of a top low game. When he gets the ball at elbow and the defender closes on him he tries to drive the lane. He almost always turns the ball over. He has no dribbling skills. His 10 to 12 jump shot has gotten better to my surprise but teams know that he can’t drive the lane without turning it over. They are now forcing him to drive.

When Yurt is back this will help a lot. Imagine Yurt at the top of a zone defense and Abu and Ted working the baseline. Even having Mav back will help.

Wow, three pages after a win. There is some excitement brewing in Raleigh.
I think most realize where this is going. We’ve seen it before.

A few observations that WERE NOT previously enumerated:

    1) Complaints/nasty faces … DSJ and Ted are going to end up losing us a game or two, not with their play, but with their attitudes and ease at being goaded into contact with another player. There are many instances where DSJ is allowing an opponent to get to him. This will only increase during the conference season as coaches direct their ‘mix-it-up’ guys to needle DSJ.

    2) I was shocked to the core to see our players actually MOVING WITHOUT THE BALL during the second half. I know that offense is not where we need more immediate attention, but movement without the ball is going to generate much more for our three guards as more and more teams go to a zone defense.

    3) Henderson found the gaps … Also in the second half, Henderson found the little spaces in the 2-3 that he used to get off quality shots. Markell and Torin can be the same type of shooter, not necessarily a Mav streak shooter, but a consistent threat to keep those other teams from living with the zone as the trump card for our offense.

    4) Gott shaved? Usually I know this statement is usually a porn site search parameter, but I figured I would mention it. (You’re welcome, BotB!)

    5) I’m willing to give a little leeway for Gott not pulling Abu or Henderson quickly after both had complete meltdowns during the game and either turned the ball over or was lost on defense (it seems both have this particular penchant), took stupid shots, etc; but if the depth is there, you have to sit those guys. Boneheaded plays like Abu’s in the 2nd half will cost us a huge win in league play.

Later in the year if we actually have front court depth I don’t think that will be tolerated. But for not you do what you gotta do.

A lot of work to do, for sure. I never understood the preseason hype. We have the pieces to be a decent team, but they are going to have to put in the work.

Honestly what seems to be broke with this team can be fixed imo. Will it? We miss Freeman among the others mentioned.

I felt looked better defensively, at least for 25 mins of the game. Hate to mention it, but this is a team that could be real good next year (ducks head).

Hey guys, I’m working on a pretty in-depth post on some of our defensive problems, complete with some video breakdowns from the Illinois game. I’m wondering if it might be something SFN might want to put on the front page. Wasn’t sure how to contact anyone about it, so I figured I’d just drop this here. If not, I’ll just post it here on the forums, but I think it’s big enough and interesting enough that y’all might be interested in putting it on the site.

Xphoenix – be sure to include that clip of one of our guards sprinting down the court hoping to get a layup before the loose ball is ultimately corralled (by the opposition.)

Said guard is usually one of the first ones on the offensive side of the court, one of the last back on D. I won’t call him out, he isn’t pulled out by the coach, so I assume coach is cool with it.

If that was coach k o have a feeling he would have sat for a while, I don’t know if our coach noticed.
