IF it’s kinda hard to get someone of ANY AGE to WANT to do some thing….
WHEN they are absolutely certain… they don’t NEED to do whatever some thing is….

    OR… as discussed elsewhere…

WHEN they are equally as certain that they WONT BE HERE long enough
for what whatever some thing, if done, to matter….

HOW MUCH MORE FUN can you have with a bunch of pampered 18-20yr olds whose hormones and endorphins are raging ????

I agree with everyone on board here so far…. really wish the best for Tyler in RED.

    But… here’s what really bothering me….

last year the ‘head cases’ were CJ and Lo
two years before that… I think… was Ryan Harrow’s last season.

over on the Hill … Uncle Roy has had LittleMac, PJ, LDII and the Ware bros and a few others in recent years….

over in Durham… according to my friends from Duke….Coach K sacrificed a shot at a National Championship a couple seasons ago by starting a known one-and-doner (who had been sitting for months due to a toe injury ) in the Championship game and totally blew his Senior leader and the backbone of that year’s team Nolan Smith OFF… if the freshman sits and Smith plays well in that game — Duke gets the rings.

over in Winston… our 6’11” local HS superstar of a few years back — who everybody said was automatic to the NBA — matriculated. He stayed up there five years, got kicked off the team a couple of times after the coaching change and is now back in town playing on the blacktop, I think.

so Tyler does whatever Tyler is going to do after the end of the season….

As SF alluded…. you heard it here first… NUMBER ONE on next season’s Head Case Watchlist is Mr. Cat… who ain’t going to like being “challenged” by Mr. Lacey.

The point is…. I’m turning into a Head Case because all these other Head Cases are keeping me from watching the quality of basketball I have become accustomed to enjoying for the last fifty plus years…. and there is no sign that anything is going to change for the better.

And if the truth were told, I’m not the only one here at SFN who thinks and feels that way.

There just ain’t a whole lot of “Tobacco” on Tobacco Road anymore.

I was really, really hoping that we might wait until the end of the season to start this thread….
It’s not that this topic is not of legitimate concern… for it most certainly is.

    It’s that this Sh%t is contagious…..

Remember a couple weeks and games ago… when the VANDWAGON was rolling at full steam???
How many times during those couple of weeks did somebody comment that Tyler was Vandy’s new best friend on the court and how they both helped each other??

Ya’ll can fill in the rest of the blanks on that on your own.

Just suffice it to say… that….

This same Sh%t is going on in most every Major D1 bball program across the country… one might suggest the “bigger” the program the worse the Sh%t is….

    Dook
    UNx
    Kentucky
    da ‘Ville
    Indiana

and others… they all got the same Sh%t… and the Sh$t ain’t going away…

because this is what Coaching is all about these days… it certainly ain’t Xs && Os….

    more fuel for the fire…

Some coaches think ‘good offense starts on the defensive end of the floor’.

Now this is 100% accurate but about 50% complete… and that’s what makes the difference.

    Let’s say for the season….
your team averages 75 points a game,
    shoots 50% from the floor,
and is good for 15 free throws a game.

    that’s about 60 possessions a game…

Now just say that your team is a running team that plays great defense.
On your best nights… your guys can fast break 2 out of every 3 possessions.

That means you STILL have to run a half court offense 20 times a game.
And that those half court possessions on average are worth 25 points a game.

If your guys suck in the half court offense…. there is no way you can make up 25 points a game by playing better defense and running more.

If they suck at defense and make a lot unforced turnovers on the fast break… then you GOTT your work cut out for you.

    Capice ???

In every case, if you are one of those coaches…. you still GOTT to teach and coach your guys to play solid half court offense and IF THEY WANT TO PLAY and be successful… your guys better WORK THEIR BUTTS OFF.

Otherwise, what you see if what you GOTT.

OR just ask Uncle Roy… whose young Holes just lost to the Demon Deacons for the first time in four years and GOTT to ride the bus from Winston back to Chapel Hill.

“Zones are a matter of teaching. ”

Well.. Mr. Dog returns from the holidays… and as is his custom… succinctly hits the nail on the head..

Well… given the fact that our “Zone offense” is virtually non-existent at this point of season… we will be seeing more zones than might otherwise be expected.

If you watch some film… you will see our interior guys standing and waiting on the ball.
They’ll be waiting until March… cause they just ain’t open.

You GOTT to move (rotate thru the lane) to get open inside any zone.

And I am 100% sure that our Coaches have already “mentioned” this to our players.
Some days… there ain’t a whole lot of difference between coaching and teaching.

As Mr. Dog mentioned… we have seen “some games” where our bench/in-game coaching lead by Coach Gott was fantastic… especially in rivalry games.

That said, might we reasonably expect more consistency at the higher level against non-rival opponents ???

    #1 above should have read… (Cat should…)

” Keep his head UP at top speed all the time ”

It’s a common thing with guys who “dance” when they make that quick first step….
When their head bobbles their eyes close… and court vision is impaired until as you said they are two or steps down the floor.
Same thing happens to wide receivers on the football field… If their head bobbles when they run fast… they end up playing defensive back.

And if you missed it…. the “view” from the baseline is posted here…

Wufpup… there is no question that our bigs have plenty of room for improvement especially the rookies… Anya and Freeman.

BUT… it won’t happen if they don’t touch the ball in a place and position where they have a high percentage of success. Now, as I see it…

Coach is responsible for their Place (Where they need to be on the floor)… We saw the Vandwagon working very enthusiastically ABOVE the free throw line 10 times more often than we saw him down low on the blocks during last night’s game. And there’s no question he was doing exactly what he was told to do. Unfortunately, that begs the obvious question “Why is your 7-footer consistently setting up 20 feet from the basket when his defender was 6’7”??? “. I’m pretty sure somebody else can set that high screen for Mr. Cat.

The Bigs are responsible for Position… getting to the Place where the Coach told them to be at the right time AND on balance, hands up, ready to receive the ball and with a clear idea in their head of what they are going to do next (Roll left, Roll right, hook shot, dunk… whatever). We’re getting in position SOME of the time… but the rest of that equation needs a lot of work.

The perimeter players, especially the point guard, are responsible for getting the Bigs the Touch (the Ball ) with a “catchable” pass. Speaking of point guards…. let’s finish that here…

NC State Wolfpack vs UNC-Greensboro Spartans

Practice leads to confidence, Confidence leads to Success, Success creates Enthusiam and Energy.
With Success… Fatigue and Attitude become non-issues and the rest is history.

Unless the Bigs start bringing the ball down the floor, the other members of the Team have GOTT to do their jobs first to get our Bigs going.

To work all this out…. at the rate we’re going….we MIGHT NOT be ready to go by the beginning of NEXT season…

    ———–
I’m thinkin… Richard Howell if he was on this team….would have taken a couple of freshman out behind the woodshed by now and “persuaded” them to get him the ball when and where he wanted it by now.

Outside of the fatigue and attitude factors, it’s clear that this ain’t Cuz’s problem.

Let’s just say for discussion purposes in the absence of good numbers… that in 15 games this season, Cuz has gotten 1/3 of his points on fast breaks; 1/3 of his points on offensive rebounds/loose balls and putbacks and 1/3 of his points off set plays while averaging around 34 minutes per game.

That means that teams who are trying to shut Cuz down… might be successful on one third of our offensive possessions.

Now ya’ll can play with the numbers if you wish, but it won’t impact the obvious conclusion.

To summarize more in-depth discussion by numerous posters on the game threads and elsewhere….

“Our strategy, fundamentals, spacing and execution in the half court offense against any type of defense (man or zone) has not improved significantly ( and that might be too polite an understatement ) since the first game of the year.”

The season is basically half over (15 games and 50+ legal practices, maybe more )and we are still trying to figure way too many things out… during the games. At this point in the season, we shouldn’t even be having this conversation as most “everything” should have been a known entity before now.

In short…. Fix the half court offense and a whole lot of things will straighten themselves out.

    ————

The question was asked during last night’s game… “What do these guys do during practice?” Maybe Mr. Dog can send one of his spies over to watch for a couple of days and let us know when he returns from his self-imposed exile.

In the meantime…. I’m thinking maybe we ought to put Patrick Wallace in the starting lineup for a couple of games and see what happens…. of course, the results might depend on whether or not anybody can get the ball to him in a position where he can do something positive.

… How does one edit these posts ???

    —————
I heard that some sports writer asked Glennon after a game down in Tampa which included several sacks which failed to rattle the rookie…

“What do you think about the (NFL) pass rush… those guys are pretty big and fast aren’t they ??”

To which Glennon replied…. “Yeah they are… but I learned how to handle the pass rush at NC STATE…”

Considering how Mike stepped in to a “bad situation” — no pun intended… and responded under fire…. there are just too many other “bad” teams in the NFL for him to sit on the sidelines…

He’s gotten every GM’s attention and he’s gonna play …. somewhere. Could be as a starter or a the backup for a couple of years while he continues to learn… either way, he’s gonna play… if he’s healthy.

And there just might be worse places and worse teams to play for than Tampa.

    ———–

Glennon’s first year stats in Tampa… don’t help to end the TOB/Russell/Glennon debate — fact is — they are more fuel for the fire that will burn on for several more years.

Not that the debate matters one bit to either Russell or Mike… one of this season’s highlights was definitely the Seahawks-Bucs game in Seattle… both on the field and off.

I guess if you want to be a NFL quarterback, NC STATE has to be one of the five schools that have to be considered.

Either that or go to Charlottesville and play for ol’ TOB.

The Cat is a freshman and he will get better…

    One observation…

He likes the ball at the top of key and his first impulse is to use his quickness to beat his man on the dance/dribble/drive.

OK… he doesn’t seem to have a whole lot of problems getting by people but…

He’s predictable… 90% to left; maybe 10% to the right… and he drops his head every time he goes by someone.

Which creates the “problem”… when he drops his head he can’t see his team mates who are open for a pass. By the time (two steps later) he get’s his head back up… the defense has collapsed on him and he’s up in the air with two or three defenders on him with no where to go and nothing to do but shoot what’s now a low percentage shot and “hope” for a whistle or try to make a pass somewhere….

If he makes the shot or gets the foul called… he’s golden but fundamentally these percentages are very much against him…

Solution: Practice, Practice, Practice… and more Practice….

    1. Keep his head at top speed
    2. See where his teammates are supposed to be… there should be one
on the blocks for the layout
sitting on the wing for the open jumper,
and one behind for the outlet…
and see where they actually are.
    3. Think defensive help is always on the way…
And read the defense… see who’s collapsing and who’s not…
    4. If the D collapses, Look for the pass first as the reads on #2 and #3 above indicate… and the shot second
If not, shoot the 8 foot jumper or take the ball to the basket…
    5. Once he GOTT “all of this” working to the left…Develop the same move to the right with an equal effectiveness…

Until he stops dropping his head… none of the rest of them will matter much…

For a demo… just watch how Tyler does it… most of the time…

The “big bonus” is that at the same time he’s doing all this… he making his team mates play better. Most of Vandy’s problems last night were that he just didn’t touch the ball enough… same for a few other of our guys.

But the way I see it…

We played two “short” teams in a row…. The same “game plan”, IF EFFECTIVELY EXECUTED, ( the entry pass to BIGS ON THE BLOCKS OFF A SET PLAY ) should have brought us two DOUBLE DIGIT wins.

And I ain’t taking NO for an answer… and neither should anybody else.
