Pack Loses Thursday Off, ACC Loses Last Shred of Credibility

In the most incompetently officiated game I have ever seen, on any level…NC State falls to the 5th seed and 11-7.

Anyone who doesn’t want to leave this bullshit joke of a conference needs their head examined.

And it’s not a one-sided thing. Ghost 5th foul and T on Ian Miller (the other guy did foul Talibeard, but not Miller). The attempted T call on the fan ejection. Taking a free throw off the board because THEY FORGOT to disqualify Zo for his 5th foul.

This kind of bush league shite wouldn’t fly in a YMCA rec league.

All the hand-wringing over the officiating is just silly. Sure it sucks, but it didn’t cost us the game. Not even close.

And why some are worrying about match-ups and seeding is beyond me. Is there anything about this team that tells you they have even the remotest chance of winning anything? They aren’t winners….at least the ones you need to be able to rely on.

They’ll win the first ACC tourney game, regardless of the match-up and probably lose the second one. I wouldn’t be surprised to see us get bounced in the first round of the NCAAs. We definitely won’t make it pa
    st the Sweet 16.

I just got back from the game here is my 2 cents for what its worth probably not that much.

I thought State came out lackluster like they seem to do sometimes. No fire, no energy. Then things started to get chipy. (Gott was even issued a bench warning during the game for yelling at the refs.) The refs talked to the players on both teams. I must say I am surprised that our upper classmen can not adjust to the refs calling the game. I said to the person next to me now the refs are going to start calling the game tight so they dont think it will get out of hand.

They start calling them left and right. The reaching and slapping stuff away from the basket was being called a lot but our guys just seemed to keep doing it.

I saw a ref. try to talk to Wood during a time out and was telling him something and Wood shook his head and waved him away in disgust. The next time down the floor the ref called a foul on him as soon as his guy had the ball for his 3rd I think. Even if you dont respect the ref and what he is saying do you disrespect him by blowing him off?

I thought the team played with more passion and hustle when by necessity the freshmen were in on the 3 guard line up.

To bad Calvin did not foul out early in my opinion.

I thought we lost the game on the free throw line and by losing our cool in a tough environment.

I can sum the game up today in one word

    “FUSTERCLUCK”

and this team is driving me nucking futs

I disagree. When one team’s starters are in foul trouble the whole game and the other team’s not then that changes the very complexity of the game. How do you figure it does not?

  6. Wulfpack 03/09/2013 at 6:26 PM #

Has anybody said that, Rick? I don’t think so. I think some, including myself, are raising legitimate questions.

We have top 10 talent. We have a robust freshman class. We have a stellar outside shooter. However, no bench whatsoever. Not Gott’s fault.

The preseason expectations were clearly unreasonable. However, both Gott and DY said they expected to be there by the end of the season. Many believe we have what it takes to be an elite team. I am one of those. So when it doesn’t happen, and you go 11-7 and are no where around the top 25, I don’t think it is unreasonable to ask questions. Add to that the lack of team chemistry. That is an issue. Not saying it is solvable this year, or on Gott at all, but it is certainly an issue.

I am very happy with Gott. I know he has what it takes. But he isn’t made of gold. He isn’t untouchable.

    Alpha….
and we ain’t Omri as well.
he had the Assyrians in retreat.
they called Palestine the Land of Omri.
    ok.
    enough history.
we should start establishing our own.
make UNX and DOOK call this state: STATE.

“We played bad because we never were allowed to play well.” So much for intelligent debate and criticism.

  9. BJD95 03/09/2013 at 6:29 PM #

I agree, not every MG criticism is unreasonable. But some of what’s in this thread certainly qualifies.

Overall, I still think he’s done an even better job this year than last. I like his upside going forward, too.

I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised if we made the Elite Eight, regardless of seed.

Except for the one fan who threw something on the floor, the people around me said it was a NC State fan, I thought we were well represented. There was even a 22 person contingent that drove up from Tampa to the game.

  12. BJD95 03/09/2013 at 6:32 PM #

I would be surprised if we won the ACCT. That deck is always stacked for the blues. A non-blue won last year, it won’t be allowed to happen in consecutive seasons.

“So much for intelligent debate and criticism.”

I see you ignored my comments about the starters as it argues your point.

“I agree, not every MG criticism is unreasonable. But some of what’s in this thread certainly qualifies.”

Agreed, I have some myself. However the same people come on the board and do nothing but complain. And whiteshoes I am not referring to you so I am not sure why your dander is up.

  15. Whiteshoes67 03/09/2013 at 6:34 PM #

Rick, FSU always goes to the bench. There starter minutes had nothing to do with the outcome. Our coach chose to sit players in the second half when the game started to unravel (about the 11 or 10 minute mark), same thing last year versus UNC and Duke. Nobody said that was the only reason we lost. It’s a questionable coaching decision given the hand we were dealt.

And it wasn’t FSU’s starters that hurt us down the stretch. Ian Miller was huge for them with some key assists and bucket. He fouled out in 17 minutes, including some cheap ones. In a game versus a very physical and big team, we couldn’t have had a worse 5 on the court for some of the stretch between 10 and 5 minutes to go. But if you think it’s the zebras fault, then so be it. Just don’t go misrepresenting criticism and debate with your own worthless vomit

“I disagree. When one team’s starters are in foul trouble the whole game and the other team’s not then that changes the very complexity of the game. How do you figure it does not?”

It wasn’t officiating. It was players not being able to adjust to the way the game is being called. Technical foul for jawing at the ref? Reaching in rather than being in position to defend? Etc…..

Also, when our starters were on the bench (the ones making, yet again, bonehead plays during the critical part of the game when they need to play well) at the end of the first half, the non-starters played very well (exception Vandy). We actually unbelievably went into the half with a one point lead.

Whether they’re on the bench or not, the starters can’t seem to find a way to finish.

  17. BJD95 03/09/2013 at 6:35 PM #

And even the cherry-picked portion of Rick’s comment is exactly right. The officials set the tone for something that clearly wasn’t basketball. Whoever lost that game would be right to feel cheated. I would certainly want a refund as a fan. Fortunately, I already payed the correct price. 😀

That loss cost Gott $750k by the way. Win 12 league games and he was to get the bonus. Wow. Bad day. Go have a scotch, shake it off, and get the boys ready for the tourney.

Certainly in hind sight it appears to be the wrong move. Had he brought them back in and they fouled out quickly then what? I thought he should have brought Calvin in earlier but same problem.
My point was FSU did NOT have to deal with these problems. They could play whoever they wanted whenever they wanted. But apparently you do not think that is an advantage.

I’ve been trying to think of a good analogy for the way I feel about the officiating and have yet to be successful. I’ll keep trying though.

Some peeps think officiating had no impact, some feel like it caused State’s demise. I’m somewhere in the middle.

I think it’s disingenuous to say the answer is “you have to adjust to it” – how is that possible when their standards of a foul changes from minute to minute?

That said, I do think you can control how you react to the situation, i.e. not getting technicals, and taking advantage when the calls do go your way, i.e. hitting free throws (CJ and Howell), and playing smart, i.e. avoiding dumb fouls and turnovers.

Perhaps that’s the line of demarcation defining State as a good team as opposed to a great team. What’s that saying about things the things you can and can’t control, and the wisdom to know the difference?

  21. john of sparta 03/09/2013 at 6:42 PM #

just as UNX went “small- ball”,
can we adjust to CJL as a sixth man?
same ole ain’t working on the road,
and there’s no more home games.

Beej- how many times have I come in here and called NCAA reffing pandemic? I get it. Believe me, I get it.

But when the obvious reasons for a loss, or a win are right there in front of our faces…

I get embarrassed by the deflections…can’t help it.

F…, you think I didn’t bitch about the strike zone, the holds on the route, or even back to high school if I got called for the charge?

Hell yes…for about 5 seconds. Then I’d recall how I mighta just pulled out on a good pitch, right before the bullshit strike, or remembered that I missed a key block on the bastard that was holding me, and maybe right before that charge call, missed the front end of the 1-1.

    I am a bad fan.

“And even the cherry-picked portion of Rick’s comment is exactly right. The officials set the tone for something that clearly wasn’t basketbal”

I said in the game thread, this game is the reason college basketball is dying. Inconsistent reffing, overly physical play which causes boring, low scoring games. If the NCAA and the ACC does not fix this, basketball will become irrelvant.
I am a huge basketball fan. Been watching for 30+ years. I used to watch basketball all the time but I never watch any games that State is not in because they are almost always boring.

    Plywood,
great post. You stated what I have been trying to much better than I could. I am not sure how anyone could argue with that post.
