Leave the ACC. Leave it NOW! [Updated 11:50PM]

There is no fixing this league. There is no gaining respect when your level of play warrants it. It’s broken beyond repair. Somebody will take us. I don’t care who. I just want out of this bush league organization.

Addition by NCStatePride…

When I was at the hardware store the other day I saw a mother with her child. The child kept reaching for candy at the counter and the mother kept saying no. It went from the child asking for candy to reaching for candy to taking the candy to opening the candy. Each time the mother said, “Stop it, sweetie. Come on, stop it. I’m serious, stop it.”

NC State has been saying “stop it” for a long time. We’ve had a lot of discussion here on StateFansNation on the refs and even written article about the obvious/admitted bias of ACC officials towards certain programs. Personally, when the discussion of leaving the ACC comes up, I feel it’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard. You have a bunch of (mostly) younger fans who have this crazy idea that we should abandon being a ‘basketball school’ and focus on football and construct these elaborate ideas of why playing in the SEC would work. The problem is that now I’m in a situation where I’m tired of saying “stop it” to the ACC officials and now just want to do something drastic for sh*ts and grins and to make a point.

It’s official, regardless of how good or bad I feel a move to leave the ACC would be, I am officially on-board with leaving the ACC if for no other reason than to send a message that this officiating is complete Bullshit. Would it cause a dip in our performance? I think it would. Would it screw up some of our scheduling and maybe even our bottom line? I have no clue; there are a lot of variables there. The one thing I do know is that when NC State and Duke can play at Cameron, have matched defensive efforts (sort of), and NC State out shoot Duke both behind the arc and inside of it and STILL loose because we simply can’t play defense in the second half… I’m done. I’m taking my ball and leaving.

Think of it this way, “Welcome back to the disenfranchised ACC guys” (as promoted from the irrelevant ACC).

As a graduate/fans of two different ACC basketball schools-not-named-Dook, welcome back into the club of schools playing Dook close enough to even get screwed by their refs. You guys don’t want to hear this, but Dook’s been getting called over everybody (Yes, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mL1y8HoVtY0"”>EVERYBODY) since the late 1990’s.

Basically, since that Capel shot went in and Dookie V emptied his bowels live on air, Dook’s been the dSPN franchise in this market. Their money has done more to damage the integrity of the officiating (and therefore, the competitive balance in this league than expansion). Dirty, unkept, open secret #1 of this conference. dSPN and See B.S. Sports have each told the ACC to deliver their precious, root-smooching Blew Devils unharmed so that the selection committee can soft-seed them into playing, Salem, Broughton, Meredith, Peace, the School for the Deaf and then Butler for a national title.

Welcome back to the Circle of Sodomites that is the other 11 teams. Oliver Purnell says he’s sorry he missed you.

Part of developing a program is developing quality depth. Richard Howell was on the bench last night because he committed three stupid fouls 20 ft from the basket. His ability to rebound would have really helped eliminate some of the Duke second chance points. They made a lot of 25 footers in the second half. The foul calls on CJW were pretty bad. He is the best option we have in the half court. I think that is why Gott chose to keep pushing the ball. Someone mentioned the sequence with Painter in the second half and I agree that was very big. I posted early in the second half that we needed to get to 82 points and we just didn’t have enough weapons to get that done.

I really want us to come out hard against FSU on Saturday. That will reveal a lot about this team.

The refs are who they are, we all know that no one is going to say boo to the league, there is too much money involved in the dookies and tar holes, to change anything. I believe the rest of the league’s teams have all bought in that we have to have them at the top in basketball every year. The ACC is never going to be conference that it was because of this. Until we have an unbiased, no connection to anyone, commisioner it is never going to be anything but a two team league with the sometimes team like FSU from time to time. We know we are 5 to 10 points in the hole when we play these two teams, we need smart plays 100% of the time, we can’t give the refs the chance to make some of the crappy calls like Howell had last night. I did see an interesting article on Mr. SEC (mrsec.com), saying that State and VT could be the next teams that the SEC looks at. I say go,if the invite comes, it would takes some years to be respectable there in football, but we could do it, and we could be right there at the top in basketball in short order. I wanted to punch a hole in the wall last night with 2 minutes to go, and after a good nights sleep I still want to punch a hole in something. Correct me if I am wrong, we had 3 guys foul out, the dookies had one guy with 4 fouls at the end of regulation.

What is the point of even playing rigged games? the spectacle? Evidently, the ACC, NCAA and broadcasters must think enough people perceive these games as fair that they can continue to make money off them. It’s the big lie. They are taking a lie and repeating it loud enough and often enough that it will be believed. So far, they are getting away with it. Or maybe people just don’t care, sort of like the indifference toward games at the fair or casinos.

A poster suggested walking off the court. That would be dramatic. But instead, how about forfeiting games with them? Seriously. Why bother? Use it as a bye week and prepare for the next non-rigged game.

Yeah, Go all the way to the SEC if it’s offered, but I’d even take the Big 12 right now.

“Correct me if I am wrong, we had 3 guys foul out, the dookies had one guy with 4 fouls at the end of regulation.”

Correction – we had 3 STARTERS foul out, they had 1 starter with 4 fouls.

I can imagine it went something like this in the pre-game officials locker room.

“So I hear carolina state has a 7 man rotation. If we can get 3 of their key players in early foul trouble, then dook should have no issues winning. Let’s first start out by getting their best defensive stopper and only senior in early foul trouble. Next we can do the same to their best rebounder. And once these two guys take a seat, we’ll hit up their best shot blocker and inside threat.”

Half-time – dook down 16, back in the same locker room

“ok guys, our plan isn’t working quite like we hoped. This carolina state team is really putting it to our beloved dook. We need to call some early fouls at the start of the half on those three guys again, but at the same time, we need to make it look like we are calling fouls on dook. So let’s just get a couple fouls on role players for dook. It will look like we are calling both ways, but the fouls on carolina state will cause them to back off leaving wide open lanes and uncontested 3’s for dook. Alright – BREAK”

I through with this shit. I told my wife and a buddy of mine exactly how the second have was going to start. I was almost 100% correct, except for the fact I said it would take about 5 mins for us to accumulate 4 quick fouls, when in reality, it took less than 3. We completely dominated this dook team. The only chance they had in that game was for us to get into foul trouble and have to back off our defensive intensity. I don’t agree with others on here that said we gave up. Our guys hands were tied behind their backs for roughly the last 12 minutes. Poor CJ Williams, last game at Cameron, had to sit out basically the whole game and was never given the chance to get in rhythm. I hope Yow and Co are voicing their concerns. GO STATE!

  7. Wolfpack93 02/17/2012 at 8:27 AM #

Well, I was going to check in this AM to say how I thought our boys played a GREAT game with the only issue being depth of the bench. I was confident that with a few more players next season (assuming no one bolts early) we would be a real threat in the ACC.

Then I read this article. While I agree that there were some bad calls, especially to open the 2nd half, I’m not sure it was quite as lopsided as you think. I really believe that our dependency on our starting 5 is our Achilles’ heel and that we could have weathered the “whistle party” if we had enough talent on the bench.

For me, that was the most positive I have come away from a loss in a long time. I am loving our chances going forward, regardless of which conference we play in.

Duke and UNC have been inextricably linked to ESPN since 1994. The PREMIER regular season matchup that season was Duke/UNC (last 3 NCAA Championships) and ESPN had recently launched their ESPN2 network. That basketball game was placed on ESPN2 and the uproar of fans (as most companies did not carry this network) caused cable companies to add ESPN2 to their regular cable packages. ESPN owes both schools for allowing their network to crap-alanche into the eleventy billion channel garbage-fest you see today.

For those too young to know why ESPN has this love for the blues, there you go. That Duke/UNC game made ESPN filthy friggin rich.

  9. packplantpath 02/17/2012 at 8:37 AM #

I personally have no problem with any foul called last night. Sure, some were questionable but nothing serious. I do have a problem with a lot of the fouls that were not called. Duke had a player foul every single time one of their guys shot a foul shot. Every time. Not a single call. We couldn’t effectively box out after foul shots because we were getting pushed and pulled around.

One of the Plumlees has a bad habit of crashing into the paint dangerously hard to get a rebound. No fouls. Ever.

  10. modobrew 02/17/2012 at 8:40 AM #

^ppp, and to add to that, is hand checking or over the back ever called on dook?

“Correct me if I am wrong, we had 3 guys foul out, the dookies had one guy with 4 fouls at the end of regulation.”

edit – I posted a comment early and its not showing up. Is there a character limit or something?

Just be glad the game wasn’t on ESPN last night or we would have had to listen to Dukie V all night. I probably would have killed myself.

I’ve never been so nervous with a 20-point lead as I was last night. But I really thought we could finish them off. We don’t have the depth to withstand getting jobbed on calls like that. When Thomas DeThaey hits the floor instead of Howell or CJL you can forget it. And when they come back out and aren’t allowed to guard anyone, why bother? CJL was the best player on the floor once again, but he wasn’t on it long enough.

Duke will get rolled in the NCAAT by a team that plays good perimeter defense and has a big body inside to beat on the Plumlees. Unless, of course, last night’s crew is reffing the game.

What I saw was a team playing to keep from losing the last 10 minutes. Duke came down the floor looking to score while we came down the court looking to “run some time off the clock.”

Yes, the refs were ‘giving us the business’ but that’s not why we lost.

As to the lead in to this thread, hell yes, go with the SEC. Just the threat of NC State leaving should be a wake-up call for the league office. Besides, if we go, how much worse can it be?

  14. Wulfpack 02/17/2012 at 9:02 AM #

That is an incredibly difficult loss to digest. I think we all agree the officiating was and has been very bad. However, we STILL had a chance to win that game, and we didn’t do the things that needed to be done.

We are lacking confidence and mental toughness in late game situations. When Howell and Calvin fouled out, their expressions said it all. We STILL had a chance to win that game at that point. We missed free throws (Wood included). We let Rivers, Dawkins and Curry get wide open, and they torched us. We’re not strong with the ball, and we weren’t aggressive enough to handle the Duke pressure. The Plumlees also got inside to keep the ball alive for second chance points, something we shut down first half.

So while one can certainly blame the officials, I’m also looking at the play on the court (like Zo stepping out of bounds on a crucial possession with no real pressure on him), and we just didn’t step up when we needed to.

Tough environment, I know. Officials working against you, certainly. But toughness, that’s what we have to develop. And it would be nice to actually get a good last shot off. The late game plays against UVA and Duke have been terrible. There was a timeout in the pocket when things broke down and we just threw up some junk, when we could have tied the game.

So I am very happy with the way we played the first 20 minutes. But I am not at all pleased with the last 20. Despite the biased officiating, we STILL had a very good chance to win, and we blew it, and it was not all due to the officiating. So now FSU comes in on a high after a last second shot to beat VT, stil with a chance to win the ACC. We come in dejected. Who is going to pick us up? Because you now have two options. You can feel sorry for yourself with your tail between your legs and lay down, or you can brush this one off (and hopefully learn from it) and become a better team and make the NCAA Tournament. That goal is still very reachable at this point in time, but you cannot allow the losses to compound at this point in the season.

  15. BJD95 02/17/2012 at 9:05 AM #

Had we kept playing aggressively, we would have had 4 guys foul out and lost by 20.

Jhmd is right to bring up Purnell – in either his last or penultimate year, he received a rogering far worse than us. Blatant clock manipulation in Cameron gave the “most favored nation” just enough time to win at the buzzer. Refs didn’t even check the monitor.

Shortly theeafter, he bolts for the worst high-paying job in D-1. Do the math.

  16. Wulfpack 02/17/2012 at 9:09 AM #

“Had we kept playing aggressively, we would have had 4 guys foul out and lost by 20.”

So be it. But go down swinging. I did not like our extemely tentative play the last 11 minutes. And I surely did not like the severe lack of poise and execution.

I’m just mad. I’m mad at the refs, I’m mad at the conference, I’m mad at ESPN, I’m even mad at my fiance. She had nothing to do with the loss, but she is from Tennessee. So I’m mad that she thinks she understands why I’m mad, but she really has no Friggin clue. I’m mad about the uniforms. I’m mad about being fat. I’m mad about being mad.

I was even so mad last night, I posted a message on facebook, and I hate facebook. I’m mad that I posted on facebook last night, and I’m mad that only one person responded to my post.

    I’m so mad.

I am glad to be at a CLE today and not in the office. I would kill the first Duke fan (even though the ones I work with would hang their heads and apologize) who so much as looked at me.

In solidarity and mourning, I dressed in all black today.

  19. BJD95 02/17/2012 at 9:28 AM #

There is one asshole here in a Duke sweatshirt. I could always kill him, I suppose.

Just another glorious morning in the life of a State fan.

  21. RegularExpression 02/17/2012 at 9:34 AM #

Funny thing is, I thought the game was officiated pretty well in the first half. Duke clearly came out trying to go inside with the Plumlees, but Howell played good defense and CJL threw several of their weak sauce shots into the stands. From that point, the Plumlees were a non-factor. They tried a few drives, but they threw up off balance crap shots because they knew CJL would pull their pants down and spank them again.

Then in the 2nd half it changed. The refs suddenly decided that they needed to get control of a game that wasn’t out of control. There were 10 fouls called before the first TV timeout. And then when Duke was making their comeback and the Plumlees and Ryan Kelly were crashing over backs to get offensive rebounds, the whistles went silent again. Meanwhile, we had three starters on the bench with fouls.

  22. Daily Update 02/17/2012 at 9:38 AM #

I haven’t read any posts and I don’t have time to blog.

I was greatly encourgaged by last night’s play. We lost because the program doesn’t have depth. Well, help is on the way in the form of 3 McD AAs! We didn’t lose because of talent in the starting five. We didn’t lose because of bad play. We didn’t lose because we weren’t prepared. And we didn’t lose because of coaching.

Next year we win that game…which is exactly what we want from our program.

I see everyone talking about coming back from a demoralizing loss. I don’t see last night as demoralizing at all. It proves we are one of the best teams in the league and it proves we are an NCAA caliber team. For whatever reason, I feel really good about our chances vs. FSU. A lot better than before last night.

  23. sjmac11 02/17/2012 at 9:41 AM #

Carolina pushes and bangs down low, probably one of the most if not the most physical teams in the country…..never ever have anyone in foul trouble. Duke to the reverse is as soft down low as a team can be, yes even with the wanna be Plumlee’s. They play exclusively the inside out game which should draw little to know fouls just by the definition of the game, instead four of our starting 5 end up with 4 fouls and eventually foul out. But all of this aside, when up big to endure a “run” all you need is one person to step up and settle down the team. We don’t have anyone who can do that, that’s what knowing how to win means.

The foul situation will never change, never. As long as Roy and Mike loom on the sidelines any opposing team is behind the eight ball. It is frustrating but so are the gas prices. All we can do is play as best we can and leaving anyone from Duke with the slightest opening on the perimeter is not the best we can do.

    Hard one to swallow

  24. BJD95 02/17/2012 at 9:42 AM #

Exactly! The calls don’t have to be one-sided (they weren’t, for the most part) to deliberately skew the game. The pattern of “tight vs loose” whistles were clearly and deliberately designed to favor Duke. And not the least bit consistent or logical over the flow of game.

  25. 1.21 Jigawatts 02/17/2012 at 9:49 AM #

State adjusted to the refs in the first half and we had a 16 point lead. Duke couldn’t do anything against us.

2nd half…the refs completely changed how they called the game coming out of the half and then changed 5 minutes later…only to change again after we pushed the lead out to 20 points. How can you play if how fouls are called are constantly changing?
