Leave the ACC. Leave it NOW! [Updated 11:50PM]

There is no fixing this league. There is no gaining respect when your level of play warrants it. It’s broken beyond repair. Somebody will take us. I don’t care who. I just want out of this bush league organization.

Addition by NCStatePride…

When I was at the hardware store the other day I saw a mother with her child.  The child kept reaching for candy at the counter and the mother kept saying no.  It went from the child asking for candy to reaching for candy to taking the candy to opening the candy.  Each time the mother said, “Stop it, sweetie.  Come on, stop it.  I’m serious, stop it.”

NC State has been saying “stop it” for a long time.  We’ve had a lot of discussion here on StateFansNation on the refs and even written article about the obvious/admitted bias of ACC officials towards certain programs.  Personally, when the discussion of leaving the ACC comes up, I feel it’s the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard.  You have a bunch of (mostly) younger fans who have this crazy idea that we should abandon being a ‘basketball school’ and focus on football and construct these elaborate ideas of why playing in the SEC would work.  The problem is that now I’m in a situation where I’m tired of saying “stop it” to the ACC officials and now just want to do something drastic for sh*ts and grins and to make a point.

It’s official, regardless of how good or bad I feel a move to leave the ACC would be, I am officially on-board with leaving the ACC if for no other reason than to send a message that this officiating is complete Bullshit.  Would it cause a dip in our performance?  I think it would.  Would it screw up some of our scheduling and maybe even our bottom line?  I have no clue; there are a lot of variables there.  The one thing I do know is that when NC State and Duke can play at Cameron, have matched defensive efforts (sort of), and NC State out shoot Duke both behind the arc and inside of it and STILL loose because we simply can’t play defense in the second half… I’m done.  I’m taking my ball and leaving.

On second thought, you guys are probably right.

If a majority of us think it’s rigged, what’s a college-aged player going to think?

The body language was probably more frustration of what was happening to/against them than anything else.

I’d be shocked at a win on Saturday.

And it’s not just the Duke game tonight. The sucktitude extends even farther. Tonight might have been the last Backyard Brawl between West Virginia and Pitt for a while. They are both leaving because Big East football fell apart. When did it start falling apart? When the ACC raided the Big East for BC, VT & Miami. So not only has the ACC ruined their own conference but they ruined the Big East too. Thanks for nothing Swofford.

Okay, the edit button brings up some sort of pop up flash thingy. Does not work so well on phones. I’ve tried dolphin, opera, and the standard internet explorer app that comes on android phones. None seem to work with the pop up edit window. Suggestions?

I have watched ACC BB for 40yrs and in the last few years it has not resembled the league that we were proud to say we were apart of.
They say change is good…but sometimes change can move you so far from your roots you no longer matter to the ones that care.It has really done that to me the last few years.Hope is a great road to be on,but when all detours led to the same Blue BS it will soon be few who care and alot that don’t anymore.YES AND ROBBERY CAN HAPPEN IN OTHER PLACES BESIDES BANKS!!

Tractor, if we are killing the #4 team in the country by 20, on their court…then lose the bulk of the starting line-up to BS officiating…and Duke comes back against our depleted team…how is it that we werent the better team tonight.
Also, it seems the ‘silly’ touch foul you are referring to is Howell’s hedge switching off the screen near midcourt. That was AFTER they had come back and taken the lead. He is expected to be out there on the switch, and we all know if he is anywhere near the ball on defense, they are blowing the whistle. Now, I think he did reach on that one…so that made exactly ONE foul that Howell actually earned all night. Im not sure CJ Williams actually fouled anyone all night. Anyway, obviously dont see it like you do.

Oh, and I like the black uniforms. I think they are awesome. We should wear them often.

    ‘foose,

Try contacting Swofford and Clougherty about that. They are good at fixing things.

NC State dominated Duke in EVERY aspect of the box score. Yet one thing stands out. Personal fouls for NC State starters: 5-3-5-0-5. Personal fouls for Duke starters: 1-2-1-4-2.

    I loved the black unis.

“… but I think Mike Geminiski made a really good point about this team.”

Mike Geminiski … another dookey/tarhole commentator the media is loaded up with. He, Seth Davis and the rest of those smug, patronizing pundits can die and bust hell wide open far as I’m concerned.

“So not only has the ACC ruined their own conference but they ruined the Big East too.”

Now that’s a really good point. The greed of the ACC leadership has led to this debacle. Ultimately, this over-expansion will be the ACC empire’s undoing.

If the guys had not done the “stupid shit” …
less of that than under previous coaches but still.

I’m very proud of the effort up until the 4:00 mark. Great show but time to learn what is needed to win in big time BB. Getting closer all the time.

I Hated the unis as much as I hated the unitards of the V era – but at least the unitards were in the proper colors …

As much as I despise G-man he had some good points.
Program on the rise – K and wonderboy better take notice.

I was infuriated with Gminski from the moment he said Alex Johnson “didn’t commit” on that charge he drew in the first half. At first I laughed, but then I realized that was one of the most moronic things I had ever heard.

I went to college…I got drunk at parties…I had roommates who were often in worse shape than I was. Despite these things, I have never heard any drunk person say something as straight fucking stupid as that.

CJ Williams just brushed his teeth before bed and got whistled for his 12th foul of the evening.

    ppf,

I gave them a call. They gave me a technical and threw me out of my house.

btw, I think this is Cartman’s first appearance on the main blog. Do I get any royalties?

When Gott fully turns this program around, and he will, these conversations will be forgotten. Hey, we’re all pissed tonight, it’s misplaced at this point. For all the hate of either Blue and the perception that the league props them up, what have we done over the last 20 years to change our own destiny? Foulup, Herb, and in desperation Sid?

Expansion is a fact of life in the NCAA. The ACC either did it or the league was going the way of say a Southern Conference. Money dictates today. If you’re league doesn’t fall in line with the status quo, you’ll lose. Can you remember the days when the ACC Tourney was the only one? And when winning it was the ticket to the Dance? It means nothing today except $$$$. And now everyone has one. And ESPN CBS televises them all. $$$$$!!! The Dance expanded to 64 teams. Why? $$$$$$!!! Yet one wonders about revenue. The thought process today is that Football is the only money making sport, all others lose or break even.

Pride mentions the following: “Would it screw up some of our scheduling and maybe even our bottom line? I have no clue; there are a lot of variables there.” Geez, haven’t we had enough people in our administration over the last 20 years without a clue?

Ms Yow is putting the pieces together to make this University successful on the field and I would expect on the bottom line. Coach Gott is the first building block. Before it’s over I think he’ll be kicking Roy and K around like old shoes. He’ll still be young when they quit.

The SEC is definitely not the answer, not unless you aspire to be a Miss. State or Kentucky in Football. In basketball you’d still be contending with Blue.

I contend that good days are just around the corner.

CJW got hosed on at least 3 calls tonight, possibly 4. Duke sets moving screen after moving screen. And not one off the ball call on them all night long. I thought the second credited to CJL was actually on Johnson. And the 4th on CJL was questionable but you you can make a case he got Rivers with the body; you’re going to see that called 50% of the time. I can live with most of the other calls. Howell had 2 tonight, not 1, where he ran over a guard or reached when hedging 20-30 feet from the basket. Thought one of the blocks called against him could’ve been a charge.

The 12 points in the last 11:33 was what sealed the deal. Not having CJW and Leslie in there hurt. Hindsight’s 20/20 but I’d have rolled the dice and played them. This game was critical for the NCAA resume. We took the pedal off the medal in the second half. If fouls were such a hugh concern, I know it’s risky against Duke but you could’ve gone zone to protect players and at least had them available on offense. We responded to most of Duke’s punches tonight, but we didn’t have the horses in to fight back at a critical juncture.

  19. hpack 02/17/2012 at 2:03 AM #

You know…At the half I told my wife and kids exactly what would happen. A couple of quick whistles to start the 2nd half, breaks our rhythm, gets our best players in foul trouble, the stage is set. Duke is already a very good team and knows what to do with the extra chances. Duke is better than us (in general) but they were not better than us tonight and there was no way they come back against CJ, Howell, and Calvin dominating the inside.

This is why ACC basketball now sux. You want an explanation for empty seats, here is is. The game is fixed. Everyone knows it and and it’s no fun anymore. Why play Charlie Brown to Swofford’s Lucy any more? With 1 fixed game against UNX and 1 fixed game against Duke every year, I see no reason to stay in the ACC. In the unlikely event that the SEC ever comes calling, I would highly recommend bolting without hesitation.

I am exhausted talking/thinking about the game, so I will just add that I liked the uniforms just fine.

It’s easy for a team to erase a 20 point lead when only one team is allowed to play defense.

I have to hand it to the ACC, the refs did their job. They called enough fouls on State’s key players to allow Duke to close the gap with FT’s and then gave Duke a chance to get into an offensive rhythm since no one on State could defend without picking up a foul and joining Williams, Leslie, & Howell on the bench most of the second half. State wasn’t complete angels, they actually did commit a few of those fouls. What was obvious was how the refs changed coming out of halftime to whistle key players for State and get them out of the game early while calling some fouls on role players for Duke. Then State couldn’t run their offense because when they’d go to the basket without being hacked but no foul was called. Once that was established State got the message from the refs, “You play defense like you did in 1st half and you’re out of the game.” So they backed off to keep from fouling out. Queue the wide open drives to the basket, wide open 3 point shots.

Once again the ACC puts the interest of the Blues over the rest of the league.

    ACC priorities:

UNX/Duke > Calling a consistent and even game where a State team would have earned a win over a top 5 team to get them in the NCAAT.

Screw the rest of the conference as long as they can promote their precious Blues.

  22. Astral Rain 02/17/2012 at 6:28 AM #

The best step is for Gott to walk his team off the court the next time it happens.

Seriously, I can’t remember the last time this happened on a major stage, and if you’re going to lose due to screwjob, why give the fans the satisfaction.

If it’s a game on national TV, it would make news- unsure if it would be positive or negative news. Make SURE you have all your ducks in a row, statistics, and other factors to back this up. You’re risking your career by doing this, so unsure if Gott would do this.

  23. BJD95 02/17/2012 at 6:53 AM #

At this point…I don’t even care if we ever play the blues again. It makes me so mad I want to spit, just imagining watching them (particularly Duke, as I have ZERO respect for how they play the game) take the court.

I couldn’t sleep last night, then when I finally drifted off around 2 – I fucking DREAMT about participating in ridiculously rigged contests. Many different contexts, one simple theme.

I hope the blues each lose in the first round, and I don’t care how much esteem and/or money it costs the league. I would trade our NCAAT bid to see that happen. With pleasure.

As one can tell, I’m even angrier this morning. I don’t know how I will be able to watch more games at this point. Especially Saturday, when all we will hear is how “awesome” Duke’s comeback was. Even muted…I will sense the assholes saying that. After all, the announcers are part of the corrupt system.

  24. wolfonthehill 02/17/2012 at 7:01 AM #

    Completely agree.

Dook pulled the same bullshit they always do. They came out in the 2nd half and fouled SO OFTEN that the refs simply couldn’t call them all. Result? Turnovers that shouldn’t have happened, worth about 10 points.

They came out & started flopping to create phantom fouls. Result? Devastating foul trouble the made our guys stop playing defense. Hell of a lot easier to drive to the bucket for layups when your guy can’t guard you & no one can rotate to help.

To beat dook or unc-ch, you have to beat them by 15… and that’s just not the way it oughtta be. At some point, Gott will need to blow a gasket in a game or in a post-game presser and get someone’s attention. Worked for K in the 80’s… he’ll need to do it now or be relegated to about a .100 winning percentage against the assholes in blue.

  25. 1.21 Jigawatts 02/17/2012 at 7:12 AM #

I sure as hell hope we don’t schedule OOC games against either Blues. We’d be better off playing Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan State, Ohio State, etc., at least we’d get a chance at get away from teams who “historically don’t foul”.

So much for even a loss benefiting us, we jumped from 50 at statsheet alllllll the way up to ….. 49.
