CJ Leslie Officially Re-Opens Recruitment

As most regular readers know, SFN has hinted at this development since January, but now that Dave Telep is bringing it into the public domain (note – this is a premium article, so we won’t post any content), we can be more explicit. CJ Leslie has re-opened his commitment, and is no longer an NC State verbal.

We have definitely heard that Memphis will be heavily involved. I have lamented that April 11, 2006 was the day that NC State’s basketball program died, after many years on life support. That was the day John Calipari, arguably the perfect coach for NC State, said no. Go ahead, re-read the Dan Wetzel article we linked and try not to slit your wrists.

And Calipari is the gift that keeps on giving for NC State. Despite self-serving and transparently jealous/defense mechanism comments from some calling Calipari a “thug” or a guy who could only get his players in at Memphis – please note we are fishing from the same waters. DeMarcus Cousins, probably John Wall, and now maybe CJ Leslie. The only difference is that Calipari actually wins these recruiting battles. Does anyone have any doubt who would have come out on top if Calipari was at NC State, and Lowe at Memphis? Didn’t think so.

Now, it’s important to note what this does not mean. We have not been told that Leslie has definitely decided to go elsewhere. He maystill end up at NC State. But publicly de-committing is a very, very bad omen for Sidney Lowe and the health of his program entering the crucial 2009-10 season.

As far as the timing is concerned, we were told that CJ would re-open his commitment at the end of the basketball season. This weekend, he made good on what we were told he would do.

Comon guys obviously its our fault as fans!!!

    BLAME THE FANSS!!!!

We are so impatient and hostile. Its not like we have sat around for 20 years waiting to see some type of bball championship and continue to see a downward spiral.

    Fowlers Blame checklist:
    1. Not Enough Money
    2. Not Enough Time
    3. Fans Fault
    4. ACC’s Fault
    5. Gods Fault

    BJD95,

    You are spot-on!!

EVERY major university has its own incarnation of SFN, and every one yells just as loudly when their teams are wallowing in irrelevance, such as we.

If “negative” comments on blogs caused athletes to decommit, or entire programs to flounder, there would be few–if any–committed recruits and virtually no successful programs.

BJD95 knows whereof he speaks. . . Incompetence at nearly every level is the problem. It IS systemic, and deep.

    Football is my only–ONLY–tonic. TGFTOB!

Hey LRM, better to have hope than known mediocrity anyday.

Screw calamari and Leslie. If it’s what CJ wants they desrve each other.

  4. BJD95 03/15/2009 at 3:19 PM #

And no reason to feel bad for Lowe, either. He will go right back to doing what he was before (assisting in the pros), having made some nice money and being given a college diploma in the interim.

Whatever you think of SFN, you should be grateful that we don’t lie to you or deceive you into thinking everything is OK when it’s not. Others in the marketplace will do that, and charge you a monthly fee to boot.

I think that our beloved Chancellor, Jim Oblinger, should have two names on his speed dial just in case we do not get an NIT bid tonight: 1) Terry Holland (ECU) and 2) Charlie Cobb (App. State). I would think one or both of these men would jump at the chance to lead our athletics department, and both are light years more capable than our current AD. Then we could let one of them decide Coach Lowe’s fate (start over this year or give him one more shot)–after that, they can move on to rebuilding some of our other struggling/failing programs (soccer, volleyball, etc.).

  7. JeremyH 03/15/2009 at 3:26 PM #

Ok, so let’s get to the bottom of it. We are not good because leadership at the top are not committed to excellence in athletics. So are these the people we should blame?

I only came back to register a thought on this site because these developments with a five * PF decommitting don’t happen everyday and are obviously unfortunate. I’ll get this done since I won’t be typing in and clicking to this pissy pitty party anymore.

The 8 vs 9 game in the ACC tourney represents the mendoza line of good vs no good. Va Tech had Deraney and Miami had who cares at PG- look and find that every team got gradually worse at the position towards the bottom. Out of the top 8 the most suspect team at PG was Clemson- whoops what happened there. The other team that I thought had questions coming was Duke until they employed an Atsur like PG in Scheyer who played brilliantly- weird huh. The best example is the UNC has a gross and absurd talent advantage over everyone else akin to team USA vs the world IMO. Take out Lawson and they not only lose but there wouldn’t have been free biscuits unless the games go five OT’s.

Why bother using the rationale that the game has insanely become tipped toward backcourt dominance, I don’t know, maybe because that is so true that is blasse by now. We have had the cart pulling the horse for three years now- plain and simple. Why does it matter whether Costner was soft, if Hickson brought cancerous chemistry or if GG banged every teamates girlfriend. Who cares if Lowe had appeased all you arm chair administrators by showing that the cart had shown improvements each and every game- is it still sitting still w/o a horse pulling it? What, one combo SR combo guard who was torn up during Lowes first year couldn’t suffice for building a healthy program- man if you think that it works that way then your clueless. We could have had Ced and Brackman on that team and still sucked.

Why bring this up? Partly because most of you could use a slip and fall on your thick head and also because I know BDJ will scream NO EVIDENCE!!! Show me EVIDENCE!!, and that alone is worth it. So we lose Leslie, which was bound to happen, but we get Harrow next year because he and Zo Brown are so tight and he is arguably the best PG in the ’10 class no matter what Dave Telep is sniffing. Compare what he has done thru his current age to what John Wall had done and you see some eye opening stuff. Basically all Wall had done is burn down every bridge imaginable that had been offered as healthy guidance- Harrow is electrifying and fearless- and oh snap a decent well grounded person. Let’s not thank Lowe for getting the edge here to solve the cart before the horse problem, instead lets piss and moan about of sweet rims we could have had on our cart- sounds PAR for this handicapped flight.

And the Noah was way out in front before any of the rest of us- WTF. THe only poster way out in from was ShootingGuard who had brilliant and well written posts. He was way out in front when he disappeared from sight of this tabloid. Three people suffering from dementia discussing flashbacks of the past together provide more r elevation then Noah could ever muster. Peace out, sell your season tix and let us talk amongst ourselves about who nice it is not having you constantly beating about the section.

Does anyone else see some irony in a person joining a blog, writing on a blog just to blame other people on a blog??

Trust me friend, we are an itch on the administrations ass.

  11. turfpack 03/15/2009 at 3:43 PM #

When you don’t have ANYONE on the three All ACC teams-that’s a problem for the future. Also I can’t remember the last time state didn’t have anyone on those teams.
We are still 3rd in ACC championships(10) after 20yrs of crap BB in the ACC?How can that be?Last ACCT win 1987.All we need is some kind of leadership in the university and a good BB coach-we could close that gap in the next 20yrs-when I’m 70yrs old.My wife said- stay positive, but she’s a UNX grad.
RECUITS WANT TO PLAY FOR TEAM THAT HAVE A BRIGHT FUTURE AND CAN WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP OF SOME KIND.
It’s not all about playing time, but about winning and having a chance to win.
Will we or can we win now at NCState? That’s the million dollar question.

The fact that we have no one on ANY of the ALL ACC teams can mean the exact opposite, too: that being that Jesus H. Christ himself couldn’t win with the bunch we have now. Even without CJ Leslie I think the recruits we have that have not (yet?) “decommitted” are still ranked higher than any of the groups we have to put on the court now. ESPECIALLY the senior class… the leaders… the ones who set the tone for the program for the year.

  16. Wulfpack 03/15/2009 at 3:58 PM #

Yea, no “negativity” on the blogs/message boards over at Duke and UNC. None whatsoever…

Guys, if there is a kid out there that reads this crap, and makes his decision because his feelings are hurt, we don’t want that kid anyways. That’s a ridiculous argument.

What do you want from us, apathy? Well if we aren’t careful, it’s coming, and coming real soon.

    WTNY, Right?

So Far, This is How Sids 2009 recruiting class stacks up to Matt Doherty’s 2002 recruiting class at UNC.

    SIDNEY LOWE
    Lorenzo brown–4 stars(#8) Shooting guard
    Richard Howell-4 stars(#19) Power Forward
    Scott Wood—–3 Stars(#29)Shooting Guard

    MATT DOHERTY
    Raymond Felton-5 stars(#1) Point Guard
    Rashad Mccants-5 Stars(#1) Shooting Guard
    Sean May——-5 Stars(#5) Power Forward
    Damion Grant—4 Stars(NR) Center
    David Noel—–3 Stars(NR) Small Forward

This Freshmen class in 2002-2003 season went (19-16) overall(6-10) in The ACC and reached the Quartefinals of the NIT.

The reasons for this comparison? A lot of times I think about Doherty when I think about SID. Look at the talented freshmen class that Doherty had that year and look at the final results. OL ROY didnt do much better the next year (19-11)overall an(8-8) ACC but did manage to salvage an NCAA bid (2nd Round). That class is clearly more talented ON PAPER than what we have coming in next year at this point.

I was somewhat pleased with Sid’s coaching in year one. Hell Matt Doherty was voted “AP National Coach of the Year” in his first year.

I dont know where I am going with this but all I know is that ultimately my dream is for State Basketball to become an UNSTOPPABLE Powerhouse. But Sadly we are no longer a force to be reckoned with and a WINNER of Championships (like we were when V was here), Nor are we Medoicre(that previous dudes last 5 years)—– we have been reduced once again to SUCKTITUDE(The Les Years and that previous dudes first 5 years).

There is no evidence to me to indicate that we will even be on the MEDIOCRE BUBBLE next year much less a force or a powerhouse.

Look, I just hate sucking SO BAD!!!!

    The Future looks so BRIGHT?
    Wait til Next Year, RIGHT?

Bad news. But realistically, after watching the last two seasons, I can’t say that I’d advise my own son to do any different.
Besides, Memphis is the perfect destination for a one-and-done player. Academic aren’t an issue, neither for eligibility nor during enrollment, you immediately join a championship-caliber team, and beating up on weak C-USA teams all year makes your own skills look even better and increases your draft stock.

  22. turfpack 03/15/2009 at 4:17 PM #

We need some real answers to these problems-Ad.leadership(from where?)A.D.(LOL!SEEYA!)Coaching(Hoping or pull the tigger).JUST HOW LOW DO YOU THINK THE BASKETBALL PROGRAM HAS FALLIN?PLEASE ANSWER TRUTHFULLY.

I’d just like to remind you guys that the Guy who cut down the nets in Atlanta today had an even worse start to his ACC Coaching career. Alot of you sound like the “instant gratification freaks” that is solely associated with my generation. Building a program takes time and I’m not ashamed of what Sid has done trying to completely change systems of offense and build something from nothing. What I am sick of is people calling for a coaches job after 3 tough years. Get over yourselves!

sidney will be here at least 2 more seasons, everyone here knows it. les was given 5 and herb was given a 6th to field a decent squad. the man who granted herb a 6th is still the a.d. harrow will still come as he and lo brown are tight. pack bball didnt die when calipari decided against us, it died when claude sitton and cd spangler strangled us in 1990. i will wait for a resurrection with or without mr.leslie. no pressure harrow and brown, but please be special.
