Rihanna’s concert not going so well … At least she’s pretty, so all is not lost.

… my going to a 6:30 wedding on S16 Friday night and making it back home before 7:30 tip off is going to be hard to beat

    True dedication. Most admirable.

    I lost. Solid effort though.

Same ref – two awful calls against Michigan St, both on the same player within 20 seconds.

I didn’t know Swofford had this kind of reach!

    Over/under 75 minutes… including drivetime…

Under. You can do it. I have faith.

I will never get tired of that Southwest commercial where the girl is dancing at all the weddings.

She’s funny … I like the catching of the bouquet and the opportunistic homey trying to swerve up on her on the dance floor.

Tweeking of the rules won’t help the inconsistency of the referees. Even this is fixable, but the conferences are going to have to want to fix it; instead of covering it up.

Agreed completely, VaWolf. I’d like to see the NCAA manage the referees and not the conferences.

^Both of these quotes fall in line with my thinking. There needs to be a hierarchy / one standard for all refs … not a committee suggesting ‘guidelines’ (which will be abandoned once conference play begins). The inconsistency is bonkers, and more than that it has gone a long way toward diluting the quality of the product. I won’t re-post my long diatribe from a couple of months ago, but I’m in full agreement with Jay Bilas on this issue. Nothing gets solved without the administrative process being handled correctly first and foremost.

Mike Greenburg of Mike & Mike whined and whined and whined about how tight the refs were calling the games during the NCAA tournament. That’s not a problem. The problem, as Bilas correctly pointed out, is that the game is called one way in the regular season and there is a ‘style’ for different conferences … then everybody gets to the NCAA tournament and the refs have to call it by the strict letter of the book. Plus, there’s not even consistency in ref groups/teams. That’s how you get West Virginia in as a 5-seed but looking more like a 16-seed against UK. They were allowed to punk their way through the regular season and then get b*tchslapped by a real basketball team in the tournament.

I could rail about this forever.

Seems to me that games use to have higher scores back in 60’s and 70’s before they had a 3 point line

^I hate the Cheats as much as the next person with reason and logic, but I agree with ol’ Roy when it comes to how the game is played. I give credit where it’s due – Roy and the Cheats play an absolutely beautiful style of basketball when they’re hitting on all cylinders. They’re an exception now, far from the rule. Roy favors expanding the lane, etc. and freedom of movement. I don’t like him, but I agree wholeheartedly.

Another thing diluting the product – take a look at these quotes from Kobe Bryant about growing up and learning the game in Europe. The guys who truly taught the game here in the US started doing it overseas, and the US was left with cookie cutter ‘instructors’ … read: opportunists and hangers-on.

I’ve posted that link here before, but imo it merits repeating. These are extremely salient comments.

This much rationality-based optimism has be terrified that someone is going to come over to my house (home office day, WOO!) and shit in my coffee.

The other shoe that always drops needs to drop somewhere else for a change, DAMMIT! (Preferably not in your coffee)

^Guy sticks to his guns, I respect him for that. Eventually that ego is going to be off-putting to more folks rather than less folks though.

He might rival Herb in the media manipulation department, and throwing not so subtle jabs at programs that express interest might burn him eventually. He lampooned State, and has been openly dismissive of other schools that would potentially court (or have courted) him.

Chapel Hill and their Rogue Squadron are liable, imo. Rogue Squadron were acting as representatives of the University – rogue or no. Actively steering athletes to fraudulent classes presents liability … I don’t see how this can be viewed otherwise. Their attempts at “state protection” and the “athletes waited too long” are both gutless and shameless. I hope they are deservedly held to the fire.

I think the NCAA has some wiggle room (unfortunately) on the legal front. All their rhetoric and double-talk could ultimately cost them though. Upholding the integrity of their sanctioned sports though is in the mission statement … watching them skate around all this is funny yet profoundly sad.

The NCAA needs to die … but that also means Chapel Hill gets a complete walk, sports wise. At least “The Way” is over … and nothing more than a joke now. The really sad thing is that when the NCAA inevitably does die, the Holes will hold themselves up as “those who enacted and enabled the necessary changes for the betterment of student athletes”. “We knew what direction all this was headed in, we were just ahead of the curve, see!”. Sure, to hell with all the athletes you used up and discarded.

If the Cheats skate on the NCAA front and the ‘Power 5’ form their own autonomous ‘league’ and that new league will not punish for “past behavior” then they get away with everything unless the legal side burns them. They are the ‘Cheats’ now for all eternity so far as I’m concerned.

The Herb Sendek era at NC State could be used as a case study in many areas:

    Fan psychology
    Media narrative (feels before reals)
    Media manipulation and ethics
Logical fallacies (The ‘Herb’ persona could do no wrong)
Fan self-esteem and sense of worth as tied to following sports
    The business of college sports
What qualifies as ‘success’ in college sports – results, image, etc?
Does a head coach have to ‘fit’ a program and fanbase?

And so many more … It’s fascinating. I believe a wide swath of the HSSS participated more so because it fell in line with the Monteith et al narrative of “we don’t cheat! we’re good guys!”. If the HSSS truly judged on merit and results then I have a hard time believing a high number of people would choose to retain after Year 5. Two kinds of people – those who exist and those who apologize for existing.

Add opportunistic media “personalities” to the mix and never before has “5 consecutive NCAA appearances!” been a darker time.

We just are getting some fresh air around the program. Thirty years without breathing takes a toll.

Anyhoo, sorry for my off-topic rant.

Has any mid-low major been sad enough to show any interest in HWSNBN?

Nothing that merits linking, but apparently Utah State flirted with HWSNBN.

Seems more likely to me that this was more media manipulation from Herb’s camp to help keep his name from being completely irrelevant in the coaching carousel. It must really fry sports columnists that most State fans have known for years about HWSNBN’s media tactics. I think we all know what quote merits repeating here …

“Herb Sendek has removed his name from consideration.”

I seriously do not see why. I’d love for this to actually be proven instead of just created through the power of the pen. These hacks can hold too much sway if they’re allowed to. I can’t see why any self-respecting AD would ever kowtow to the likes of Goodman.

Taking a look at potential candidates is all well and good and fun, but articles like this usually amount to as much good info as some (not all) Espn guys and their “sources”.

What’s irksome to me is a line like this: “It’s hard to imagine him turning down the job.”

Why? If the author is going to include a line like that, back it up.

Marshall has made it abundantly clear that he likes where he’s at and he’s not going to chase down shooting stars.

    That little girl is Few’s daughter … I believe…

Yeah I think so. Shitty producer decision to zoom in on her there. Few’s wife already hid from the cameras, so you hunt down a little girl?

    F you CBS.
