I certainly hope not. Extending Gott while firing TOB would show she is too emotionally attached to Gott to think rationally.

Wasn’t the extension an automatic deal for making the NCAA in either one of his first two seasons or am I remembering that wrong?

initially the first ext was automatic but then before last season she extended him again until 2020 and give him a 20% raise to 2.5 mill/per

a lot of us were incredulous because she stated it was done to keep him here as if someone was trying to hire him away.

Are you joking or are you serious that you can’t figure this out?

Thanks for catching the incorrect spelling of complementary. It was NOT a COMPLIMENT but a COMPLEMENT.

I wondered if hiring Lutz was a compliment to Gott… or something like that.

The quotation marks had me question the intent. I’m not the grammar or spelling police type. Had the quotation marks not been there, I would not have raised the question. I too thought the two were complementary.

I’m not much of a basketball fan these days — not since V’s days as our coach, so I don’t read or watch much and don’t remember much of anything I do read. You know, CRS. Sorry if I sounded “corrective.”

Football is a different deal for me. I’m surprised no one has commented on Coach Nielsen leaving and going to the Saints as their DL coach. All most the same day we hired another DL coach so it wasn’t a “sneak off” affair. We will miss him but the new hire seems to be well liked by those who know that sort of thing.

We’ve lost four coaches recently — 2all 2 last year and 2 this year — to promotions or better paying jobs. No coaches are splitting to get away from Doeren. Canada was fired, not leaving on his own.

I believe the word that fits here is called “apathy”. For the most part nobody cares. Yow says there is “progress” but anyone with a brain can see through that. He gets next season so I would imagine most of us are in a wait and see mode. I know you like DD but you have to admit he hasnt built any excited around the program.

Hopefully she is saying to respect what he has accomplished, but ultimately if he loses enough to get fired she will address that at the end of the season.

hopefully. But point out the unc score from 2 years ago seems like a mighty big reach and feels like she is trying to pad his stats

What is she supposed to say to an emailer? I know it is a huge dumpster fire, and he will be fired after the last game is played?

I agree but cherry picking the positives from his tenure is an odd look when the natives are restless

    Bass,

That, IMHO, is a “Canned” response. I typically do 5 or so emails, annually, with AD Yow. That response is not her style or prose. I can also tell you from experience that if you push back a couple of times and disagree with her logic, she will calmly and quickly shut you down (almost becoming defensive…such as “in the overall scheme of things, this is not a big deal so We need to move on…”.

The fact that she has left the door open is interesting. It MAY be that there is too much chatter to just keep ignoring the 800 pound primate…..who knows.

    Thanks for sharing.

I am not sure why she would even bring up that stuff if she wasnt at least contemplating giving him another year. Holy crap next year would be lollerific if so

The four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, 2 sweet 16s, beating
the number one regional seed in Villanova two years ago, the win
against UNCCH where we held them to the lowest point total in Dean
Dome history two years ago and the win at Duke this year for the first
time in 22 years are all appreciated.

In the spirit of the Pack,

    Debbie Yow ”

Holy crap this part scares the hell out of me. Seems like she is laying the groundwork (excuse) for another year. What the hell does the chapel hill point total have to do with anything?

I’m starting to believe that its it time for Gott to go, but there is no point in that if we replace him with another great hire like Less, Herb or Sidney. One positive of the basketball situation is that I no longer loose sleep over our games.

    starting?

While watching the game Saturday a few friends and I got into a discussion about State. The non State fans all still think Gott is a decent coach. That is until I asked them 2 questions. First give me a player under GOTT that got significantly better year over year. They couldn’t. Secondly, name one coach in the ACC you would take Gott over. They couldn’t. Then they all agreed it was time for him to go. Regardless of what happens from a firing standpoint, I feel like if we dump Gott the media will treat us the same way. Much like they did with Sendek (even though we didnt fire him). I don’t want that to hinder the search. If we are going to fire him there needs to be a quiet push to the media that he isnt cutting it immediately. Focus on the results etc.

I personally think Gott is going to “resign” and use the health/life style/less stress excuse. He and Yow will work out compensation so everyones happy.

I think however if Yow has to straight fire him he could pose a problem if he started running his mouth about us and the program about expectations and what he has achieved.

Thanks for that post. I too, email here on occasion….not to discuss political issues or to exchange BBQ Sauce preferences. IT is usually about a specific situation and I offer feedback or will ask a question.

I HAVE avoided the issue with her as I did not know how sensitive that she might be. She DOES respond, as you know, almost immediately and her responses are curt and to the point.

For those that are now keeping up with the contracts. She will be Outta here mid (memory) 2019. Coach Doeren’s contract expires or runs through 12/31/2019. Coach Gottfried’s contract runs through the “END” of the 2019/20 season…..Of course, both dates are reviewed each year based on performance.

When the Coach Doeren situation came up about mid season, there was a LOT of chatter in the higher levels of the Big Donors and also the WPC members (NOT from Bobby Purcell). The consensus was that she was RELUCTANT to pull the pin on Coach Doeren and eventually she decided to give him ONE MORE SHOT.

I have NOT heard any comments, either way, from these individuals…..but I rarely see them during BB season….I drop over to their tailgates during FB season and it WAS, at the final game, a MAJOR topic….and There was little or any support for Coach Doeren. Seems like beating UNC gets you extra points or tips the scale.

I can NOT believe that Coach Gottfried has any “political capital” left. His personal issues a few years ago soured a lot of boosters and then he and EA (Baseball) becoming roomies was a concern. She, supposedly, called him into her office for a Dutch Aunt talk about his philandering and then again for his “Odd Couple” arrangement with EA. His recent heart issues was supposed to be resolved so that he could focus on his job and his GF seems to be pretty steady, so he does not have to go on sordies for relief….

NOW, I was NOT there, but the comments came from well placed sources that talk to the other coaches and members of his (Gottfried) staff.

Dont forget Elizabeth kicking him out before the puerto rico trip and the assistant coaches ie. Lutz having a “come to Jesus” meeting with him or intervention if you will.

Yeah he has used up any good will previously built up among some fans and people in the administration. Its not a good look to see your bball coach drinking at bars in n raleigh.

I’d rather sit through two to three years of losing seasons with a young not so talented roster than watch just one more gd game where we give up 30 open, uncontested three point shots or allowing opposing team players to have career nights. Good luck in the NBA Dennis, thank you for the pack family loyalty. Yurt7, check you on a D league roster if not another D1 squad that will properly develop you (probably your better route). Malik, good luck young man, Mav…sorry bro, graduate early and get the f out that way you could play immediately somewhere and get some exposure.

Seriously, just checked the box score, seriously….Kapita and Markel played just 2 minutes each. Stellar, absolutely stellar job Gott

Its almost as if he is trying to get them to transfer

What, pray tell, was wrong with running Fowler, TOB, or Sendek off? Hasn’t the market shown we were 3-for-3 on those??

Actually there was nothing wrong with running off those 3 but once we got a taste of the blood, we start the run off as soon as the replacement arrives. I don’t want to start a sh1t storm but I found the insults, lies, and characterizations of the ones we run off distasteful. I haven’t seen the same character assassination I saw in the past. My biggest laugh was seeing Fowler called a hick by people on the site of an agricultural school. It’s as if we could care less if we ruin someone’s life as long as we run them off. I also think we sometimes run the wrong one off. The chancellor should have been run off before Fowler. Fowler stayed beyond his time. Mary Ann Fox would have given Fowler different orders than that ass Oblinger or what ever his name was.

The biggest problem we have at NC State IMO is we want a Cadillac ride but only want to pay for a Ford. Not only that but we think we deserve a Cadillac ride.

You are a married guy. If you look for faults, you can find reasons why your wife is the worst in your group of friends. If you look for the good points, you will find she is the best. The same is true with Doeren. With a few exceptions, most on this board look for reasons he is the worst. It’s a good thing our FG kicker cost us a few game otherwise we would be hard pressed to prove Doeren is a lousy coach and he will never win more than 8 or 9 games a year.

But I agree 2 of those 3 needed removing. I give TOB a pass because of the health issues his staff had. I also think he was behind the times with recruiting methods. Maybe that should be 3 out of 3.

Gott is paid in the top 25

other than that I honest to God dont know what point you are trying to make. DD gets a 5th year, he has exactly one year to get above the 3-5 mark in conference. But again I am sure when the new coach comes in you will be screaming at the top of your lungs that there is no talent to work with so we should be patient. You see how this goes?

If (when) we lose to USC then I think all hell breaks loose and the floodgates open.

I have been very respectful to your “we are one step from awesome” opinion. What I have learned is you believe you know more than anyone. So thank you for that “lesson”.

You got me there. I do believe I know more about Wolfpack football than someone who only watched 30 minutes last year. You know way more about Wolfpack basketball than I do. I’m waiting to hear WTF is going on in that sport.

    Top 75 class. Good grief.

At first glance it does seem bad but a low ranked class that fills needs is better than a high ranked class that duplicates needs with 4-star recruits. One other thing I don’t know for sure about is how JUCO additions affect ratings but we got a JUCO All America defensive tackle Wednesday after Doeren’s pressor. This would put us ranked at about 37th with most of our needs in 2019 & 20 filled.

Don’t let the “star-counters” get to you. We are not nearly as bad off as it might seem.

No offense but you are absolutely insane with that point, just more ridiculous spin from you. Just acknowledge its a lackluster class and move on. No need to dig your heels in, circle the wagons or whatever because DD is getting a 5th season.

But I can see it now, a new coach comes in and the excuses for his under performing will be the lack of talent that DD left him with. Thats how you guys like to play the game

The thing that makes me scratch my head is not the size, but rather why we didn’t get some bigger pieces if we could be more selective. Looks like we went even more under the radar than usual, like one ordinarily does when filling larger classes.

We recruited ‘needs’ — 6 D-linemen and 3 LBs. Except one JUCO AA from Louisburg College who came out of nowhere, our recruits all have the frames to add good weight i.e., muscle and fit our desire for length and height. These guys will be ready to go 2 and 3 seasons from now when our current crop of linemen are gone. Just damn smart recruiting. Want details? One of these guys grew 5 inches in height in one year. He opted to go to prep school because he and his HS coach knew he wasn’t physically ready for college. IIRC most of these guys are smart and many were team captains. The also played multiple sports in HS — think Russell Wilson.

We are picking up TE recruits that are projected to switch to OL ala Bradford. These are not just “coach-up” projects, these are projections after Thunder Dan does his thing. They are not being conned. They fully expect the physical transformations to occur. I just found out that we keep before and after photos of current players to show recruits that we can change their bodies to make them better players and more productive.

One of the LBs looks ready to play as a freshman. We have 6 or 8 preferred walk-ons and except for a kicker all are 6-2 and weigh over 200 lbs. Our scout teams are going to make our skollies better players. Some may wind up on special teams and some will wind up with skollies. All seem to want to be part of our future.

I can’t go on from memory but this is actually a good class that fills our needs, just not a “stary” class. The commitments we are getting for 2018 and 19 indicate we will be getting the stars we all want.

Being talked to death is a terrible way to die — even if it is the written word — so I’m going to stop here cause I killed 4 people on another board last week. Besides this should give the non-believers plenty to laugh about.

Darn, McCallum. I thought I was going to slide that one by you. LOL

Thats just spin on the whole thing and you could apply this statement to any school and any class. Just admit its not a good one, in fact our recruiting has been descending for 3 years now, and DD has to get it done this year or is fired. Not sure why that is so hard. The cards are on the table at this point but this class is not a good one.

There’s a lot of similarities between the rankings of DD’s last few classes and TOB’s.

The similarities end with the fact that both consisted of HS football players. Many of TOB recruits, like Amado’s never made it on campus. Doeren’s all seem to make it. How many of TOB’s class of 2012 graduated? About 5 or 6. Tough to have seniors and senior leaders on your team if they aren’t in school.

well that is certainly one way to defend this craptastic class

owen: Is Marshall really going to turn down the Koch brothers’ money? Are we really going to pay that premium? I don’t know. My first call would be to Arch. I’d happily take Marshall, but am just not as sure about that one working out. I would definitely engage with Keats as well as what he has done at UNCW has impressed me, but there’s more risk there than with Arch or Marshall. My longer shots would be Randy Bennett (am very impressed with what he’s done at St. Mary’s) and then a desperation hire of Vinny.

Yes I think if a school can pay comparable then he is gone. He interviewed with Bama and was supposedly interested in the Texas job. I think he knows the limits of where he is at now and has done all he can. He probably wants to see what happens when he can recruit the top 1-50 and go from there. Why not do it in the ACC back on his home turf. I honestly believe he would come back if we went hat in hand with a good offer. Seriously why wouldnt he. Look Duke and UNC are both going to be making moves in the not so distant future. Its imperative that we are set up to capitalize on this. Remember nobody wants to follow immediately after coaches like K or Roy so we have some breathing room. I think we get Marshall or Arch for that matter here and established when those guys go then we can be sitting pretty. We let Gott have another year and we are now looking for a coach the same time those other schools are then are place in line is way back.

Again I think Marshall would jump at the UNC, Duke or NCSU job as long as the pay was substantial. He would be an incredible coach for either three.

Gregg Marshall is ready to leave WS.

State should stop being State and go hire his a$$.

The dummies in Raleigh could have had him years ago if that hadn’t been the dummies they’ve always been.

    McCallum

I have said this along since the gott ship started sinking. I think if we ante up Marshall will come here. I think he has done all that he can with that program and he knows it. He is from this area and I would bet he wants to come back, especially considering that K and Roy will be gone within a couple of seasons.

On the flip side he would be an absolute nightmare if UNC chooses to hire him.

If Yow makes a move (which I still dont believe will happen) then its imperative to reach out to Marshall then if that falls through throw the money at Arch and pray. Keats would have to be the 3rd option. But I really think Marshall is ready to move one. The dude seriously considered going to Bama of all places. I have to think NCSU can reel him in this time.

I dont see any way he can possibly be our coach next season. I just dont.

Now how that happens is a a mystery because of the Yow factor. Personally I dont see her simply retiring she is too head strong and likes her power too much. Someone much smarter than me is going to have to come up with a plan and implement it. I just dont see any possible way we can keep gott. By my count we have no transfers coming in and an undersized shooting guard as the only recruit to date. Add that to a group of Frosh/soph that dont see the court then we are in big trouble next year regardless of the coach.

Go hat in hand to Gregg Marshall, then archie and if it gets to that point Keats. Not sure if the first 2 would come but damn I have to think it would be a lock for Keats.

You seem to take issue with my posts, so what’s your opinion?

I don’t take issue with them. I enjoy them because they are generally articulate and informed, and you provide a lot of substance for discussion. Not the case with everyone who posts here (perhaps including myself).

    2. Looking back over his tenure, IMO it is clear that Gott is better than all of our coaches since V, although that is a low bar. It is equally clear he isn’t as good as V, Sloan, et al. I think he has raised the standing of the program, which could potentially bear on my last point below.

Personally I think Herb was better here than gott. The last five years anyway
