I gave up on the UVA game at 19-4. If necessary, I will do the same on Sat.

State needs better quality victories than just a sweep of WF.

The realist is separated from the optimist by understanding the differential in meaning between “hope” and “expect.” :D

Much like the pessimist is separated from the optimist by experience.

I hope the game is less hideously played

I always knew that BJD was an optimist at heart.

    Here was Miami’s first-half schedule

    Top = SYR(x2), Duke, Pitt
    In-between – @UNC, FSU
    Middle= @UMD
    Bottom – VT, @GT

Their home loss to VT in Dec approaches inexcusable, but that’s a tough schedule.

One word of caution about the Dance Card…..State’s current position is based on two Top-50 wins (Tenn and FSU). It is possible for State’s position to degrade even with two wins over the next week if Tenn and/or FSU drop out of the Top 50 (both currently in the 40’s).

The credit for any successes and the blame for any failures of State’s programs lie solely within the confines of State’s athletic dept. To be more specific, you can blame/thank the head coaches. They hire their staffs, recruit their roster, pick the big-pictures strategy, teach the kids, and make the in-game decisions that can win/lose ball games.

I just realized that I did an entry on this very subject as excuses for Herb were flowing like rain-water. (The entry was done a week before Herb fled to the desert.) We’ve lost a table and the punctuation has been scrambled during the various site-upgrades, but it’s just as valid today as the day I wrote it.

    UNC undecided?
    No way! They’re IN.

I clearly said that UNC had worked above the screening criteria that I use for bubble….and I have never said in any of these entries that UNC wouldn’t make the NCAAT. Here’s what I wrote:

since UNC and FSU can’t decide where they fit in the conference, I’m done with picking for them. So I’ll call both schools “undecided” until they work out their issues:

Do UNC and/or FSU deserve to be considered among the best in the conference or are they at the top of the “mess in the middle”? Time will tell.

PS – Your claims about ESPN influencing the NCAAT selection sound pretty silly. I would suggest dropping that claim unless you have some pretty damning evidence.

A sarcastic person would quip that State’s athletic dept has worked to minimize the number of kids that grow up State fans over the last 25 years.

State can’t use tradition or success to entice kids to come play. Doreen is selling hopes/dreams along with playing time. I wish him well no matter where he is finding kids. He will only have a short period of time to make the transition from selling dreams to selling a winning program.

When I talk of 1 or 2 acc tourney wins I am considering what these will do for our RPI.

I wasn’t talking about you or anyone in particular since I haven’t seen that particular discussion yet. But experience says that it’s coming.

With the new ACCT format, the bottom six teams play on Wed…and the ACC certainly doesn’t have any bubble teams down that far. If a bubble team wins on Thurs, they are nearly guaranteed a note-worthy opponent on Friday (against #1-#4 seeds)….meaning that two ACCT wins should be a big boost for any bubble teams.

If you haven’t seen it, here’s the new ACCT Format:

Keep in mind, you can win two games Wed and Thu in the ACCT this year and neither of them be considered quality.

Damnit. I should have dissected this nonsense at the same time as the 20 wins.

There are alot of people that love to make predictions based on “one” or “two” wins in the ACCT without understanding that expansion has severely diluted the ACCT. In my experience, these people are at least as rabid as the group touting total wins.

Another thing to keep in mind, dance card uses old RPI formula

This is an interesting point that I’ve been wanting to discuss. Let start with a few more facts before drawing conclusions:

    – The net effect of the new RPI formula is to elevate teams at the top of the mid-major conferences versus teams in the middle of the power conferences.
    – The Dance Card is only concerned with clearing the bubble…not seeding. They say that the old RPI formula shows better correlation than the new one and I’m not going to argue statistics with a couple of PHDs.
    – The NCAAT Selection Committee is concerned with both the bubble and seeding the entire field.
    – You can get copies of the “nitty-gritty” sheets that the Selection Committee uses and there is only one RPI listed.
    – Jerry Palm (formerly collegerpi.com and now on cbs.com) has said for years that about 3/4 of the field is seeded within one spot of what you would calculate from RPI.

So, the conclusion that I’ve drawn is that if the change in RPI hasn’t really affected the selection process, then it must be mostly used for seeding.

Good recruiting is essential to any program. But strangely enough, my interest in following it has dropped to nearly zero. All too often, the recruiting news turns into “a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”.

Hopefully, this year’s recruiting will yield more fruit in BB as well as FB.

I think that BobLee has somewhat missed the mark.

It’s true that too many FB and BB players are unprepared for college-level work.
It’s true that most of those that are unprepared are black.
It’s true that schools have set up eligibility majors for years.

But none of those facts lie at the heart of the UNC issue. UNC lowered themselves into the same cesspool as the lowest of the low-end mail order degree programs. In other words, write us a check and we’ll give you a degree.

I can’t tell if you’re serious or not, but in last year’s NCAAT, I count 19 teams (including UNC and NCSU) who got at-large bids without 25 wins. (That’s a little over half of the at-large bids.) In other words, not a very useful criteria.

Herbal did manage to shut the pundits up. No?

Some days I’m a little slow. But since the media would never admit that they were ever wrong, Herb did indeed shut them up.

I’m tired of talking about UNC or refs and its a long time until Sat. I laughed when I saw the article and thought that it might be fun to see how.many would laugh too….and how.many would complain about bringing up an old sore point.

Personally, I don’t believe that there is such a thing as good loss. I believe that the best you can hope for is that your losses are not face-palm worthy and truly embarrassing.

I’m also not convinced that the so-called bad losses matter all that much when it comes down to picking through the bubble. Usually every team among the last 5-10 to pick from has warts on their resume. It’s alot easier to see who the Bubble teams have beaten than trying to decide how to evaluate a 20-pt loss to #10 versus a 2-pt loss to #25.
