I’m surprised. More optimism here than I expected. Certainly more than I have.

I would love to see our guys get rewarded for a pretty good year.
We lost a whole team at the end of last year. Four of those guys are getting paid to play basketball this year. (and maybe five – I’m looking at you, UConn)

Very quick, simplistic comparisons – assuming we win out: (BIG assumption)

Overall regular season record: 22/9 versus 20/11
    ACC record: 11/7 versus 10/8
Road wins: 3 ACC road, 2 neutral versus 4 ACC road, 2 OOC road
    Scoring: 77.4 pts / 70.2 points allowed versus 70.9 pts / 69.5 allowed

The point being, this could have been a train wreck year – and it wasn’t.

    WOW!
I am impressed!! I came to the site to say something about ‘not blaming the refs on our inadequacy’ and a bunch of you already did. Excellent! Carolina got more fouls called on them and they had the only guy foul out. And amazingly, there was exactly the same number of fouls called as last game (23 on UNC, 21 on State), and exactly the same number fouled out.

We had a chance and didn’t step up and get it done. I was at the game, and watched Paige have WAY too many good looks at the basket. Everyone is comparing Paige’s performance to TJ. There is no comparison. TJ hit one three point shot. He had to fight for every other shot. Every shot was contested. He was incredible.

This was a great, great basketball game. We were the better team offensively, because they were really tough defensively. We had to work hard for every point we got. But we got it done on the offensive end. We just couldn’t keep up with Paige on the other end.

We seem to have only three responses to a loss on this site.
    1) Kill the refs
    2) Kill the coach
    3) Kill both

I think any of those takes away from a great performance by our team. The coaches had them really well prepared and UNC really struggled with our defense at times. We got 10 blocked shots! TJ scored the most points since I watched Googs also score 36 on Carolina at Reynolds. Vandy didn’t foul out!

Sadly that great team performance was too little, too late.

    This is a sad day.
Maybe the Technician has decided, like the Tarheels, that this is no longer a rivalry so no longer warrants the effort.

“This game will be ugly, I mean Tammy Faye Baker ugly. “

Whoa! You sir, have said a mouthful!!!

(btw, if you do not know who Tammy is – DON’T LOOK HER UP! Too scary!)

If the players are reading this blog, I would be amazed. If so, someone please speak up and let us know. I think the majority of us are enjoying this team more than any in recent memory and are optimistic about the future.

If the coaches are reading us, then they are getting some priceless tips on raising their games. If you guys are out there, you’re welcome!

UNC by only 4?? Is that a typo? Should it be 14, 24, or 34? If I were a fan of the baby blue goats I think I might put a stack of cash on winning by more than 4.

Jig got it exactly right. The ‘just slow them down’ defensive and ‘out score them’ offensive strategy is not going to work in this scenario. We’d need either a defensive effort that I doubt we are capable of, or an across the board, career scoring high for several players.

Here’s how I see it playing out:
    1) Interior foul trouble – Vandy and TJ with two fouls by the 10 minute mark of the first half.
    2) Paige blows up from the start, eats Tyler’s lunch. Two fouls on Tyler early, Cat in the game and overwhelmed.
    3) Nasty game

The good news?? I doubt we’ll blame this loss on the refs.

I read the article, then all the posts. And then I realized I don’t care.

If the Pack gets good enough to do some damage some day, then I’ll care about the format and the seedings. For now, it’s about ‘how long can we avoid losing?’

And then the NIT. Is it even televised anymore? If so, I can’t imagine why.

I attribute this 100% to the Syracuse game. These are mostly 18-20 year old kids who almost pulled off the upset of the year in the ACC. The discouragement of giving the game away, all the grief they were apparently getting from the haters, imagining “what if”, and back to back travel. All that stuff did them in.

Not an acceptable excuse, no doubt about it. But that was not the team we’ve seen on the floor lately.

“…we can temporarily forget about how not only the refs and the ACC, but likely the NCAA, possibly the “establishment”, and maybe even the KGB has singled out NC State for long term pain.”

Well said!! (but you forgot Al Queda)

Swing game is right. We lose this one and any chance of making the NCAAT becomes very remote.

I think we have to win BC, VT, CU and UM to even be on the bubble. And probably need at least one upset at PITT or UNC plus some success in the ACCT to be in the Selection Sunday conversation.

The fact that they beat Duke scares me to death. Gonna be a tough one.

Well written. Especially the part about talk radio being all about ‘poking the bear’, not so much about accuracy or even expressing the true opinions of the hosts. That’s why I don’t let them get me too wound up.And also why I do not listen to that Joe and Adam show.

However, I want State to get credit for playing a great game against a really good team. I don’t want to hear that Syracuse was awful. We came in with a solid game plan, executed it well, and out played them.

Yea, we gave the game away. And as frequently is the case, there was a disputed call. It’s a loss. It’s over. I hate it. Let’s beat Clemson.

But give us credit for playing well.

Heck of a performance. We didn’t play exceptionally well, but still came within a basket of beating the #1 team in the country on their court in front of 30k of their fans.
I too am broken hearted, but not blaming anyone.
I never thought we’d still be in the game at the half.

Just read that the Syracuse guards are ranked #1 & #2 in the ACC in steals. Oh my.
There’s a big key to the game. Cat may set an ACC single game record for, “I’m going to try my patented cross-over, now you go lay it in the basket.”
And Dez is going to be right behind him.

“…we beat Cuse (somehow) and then we poop the bed against Clemson and VT.”

Yep, that sounds like us. For two days we’d be media darlings, then Clemson crushes us and we resume our obscurity.

Great to see the debate about the team. Great to have something to debate about. I wasn’t sure we would this year.

The ‘half full’ folks see a nine deep team (most in a long time) of talented youngsters (4 frosh, 2 rookies, 2 soph, 1 Australian) who are getting better and playing better than most expected this year. Nobody expected them to be a top tier team, we knew they would start slow and learn, and consistency (game to game, and within games) was going to be an issue. But they are a solid foundation for the future, and fun to watch. They see the UMD game w/o TJ as positive signs for next year. Discussing even the remote possiblity of making the tourney is an accomplishment.

The ‘half empty’ folks focus on the inconsistent, terrible play at times. (NC Central loss!!!) And the fact that we are not remotely able to compete with the top tier teams. They see TJ leaving as eliminating any chance of our being any good next year. And not being mentioned in the NCAAT discussion means failure.

I can see both opinions, but I agree with the ‘half full’ guys.

Last year’s SUPERSTAR team won 5 road games, two of which were on a neutral court in Puerto Rico. This year’s REBUILDING team has already won 4 true road games, and has a shot to win more. I really think that is a positive sign.

I know it is highly unlikely and there is probably money involved, but I would love it if Deb Yow decided we are never going to the NIT. Nobody cares about it. It is a sign of failure. And I don’t buy into the “tournament exposure helps us get ready for tourney play next year” crap. You ever hear anyone say, “the reason we did so well in the NCAAT this year is because we tore up the NIT last year”? Nope.

    I say, NCAAT or nothing.

    SFN does PSA! Awesome.

My daughter got stuck about a mile from the house. I went to the rescue in the 4WD pickup. Took 2 1/2 hours. Stay away from New Hope Church Rd. The hill going up to the Green Road intersection was completely stopped.

    Kyle “George” Washington.
I like him. He’s still a toddler figuring out NCAA level ball, but all the signs point to him developing into a very solid multi-year player. Painter seems like a good comparison, and we hated when he left.
Sometimes it feels like he shoots because he’s been told to (I.e. “if we get the ball to you right there, put it up”), rather than actually having a feel for when the shot is there. I think the shots he is taking are within his range, he just needs to settle down and put them down.
But let’s give him credit for getting that rebound at Miami that we really needed to avoid Miami putting it back up. And that foul on the desperation heave was brilliant! LOL

Yea, the numbers aren’t good so far, but I think all of these minutes he is getting now will pay off next year.

    MUST WIN!
We’ve got to have this one. Thank heavens it’s at home. Please – please – please make this one easier to watch than that last one. I was ready to jump out the window in the second half. It seemed like 30 seconds didn’t pass w/o a foul.

CMM is a game time decision? I’m thinking that is a sure recipe for a career high performance.

C’mon back Beejay, we need those five fouls on the court.
Turner / Lee need to score early and often
Lewis / Cat need to keep a tight handle on the ball
Wash – get that jump shot going again
TJ – don’t foul out please

I think we will have the better talent on the court, but they’ve got the better guy in the suit. Zone defense the whole game? Could be a catastrophe.

The only thing that tips in our favor a little is they aren’t very good offensively, so far. So they probably won’t run away from us. Hence, KenPom’s 4 point tip of the hat to the U.

I think the game hinges on our ability to hit a few threes in both halves. And that is a tough situation to be in for our guys. The weakest aspect of our team.

We really, really need both Miami games.

When is the last time we had such excitement in football? Very cool.
However, just like with basketball, it takes a while and multiple, consistent quality, incoming classes to turn a program around.

But improving over 2013 shouldn’t be much of a challenge.

So let’s all agree, there is no probable scenario that gets us in the NCAAT this year.

    I doubt that surprises anyone.
