    I’m calling it now…

If, and I mean IF, FSU upsets Clemson tonight we win out the rest of our season. Logic:

We just hit rock bottom, expectations cannot be any lower, the team/coaching cannot be any worse. FSU will come in high and mighty and expect to coast against a team that just loss 3 in a row and couldn’t beat the worst team in the league on homecoming. We play like we did at Clemson because that’s what you do when you hit rock bottom. Not to mention the Carter Finley curse that haunts FSU. The momentum from this win then propels us past Syracuse and we have two games left against teams we are capable of beating. We close out a close one against Miami at home and we are licking our chops to ruin the end of UNCs season and we are riding high, playing with confidence, after knocking off 3 straight.

Sounds crazy, probably is crazy. We finish 8-4 and get a decent bowl. DD is back for year 5.

^The Yurtseven decision won’t come until the fall, most likely just before the season starts and possibly even into it. The NCAA focuses on the red tape for the fall sports first before they move onto winter.

Just saw this article on Rivals. Apparently we are the 3rd best at recruiting the State of North Carolina in football. I’m not sure I totally agree with Clemson being ahead of us. They’ve pulled one more elite recruit than us in that timeframe but we have recruited twice as many players as a whole. If the rating system were considering ratio then Clemson would win as they generally only pull a top recruit and no other school even comes close to their 11:23 ratio. The UNC thing is just a shame. I guess playing for a three way split – Coastal division championship is better than no championship at all…

Here’s the link. My mistake, it’s his revised way-to-early top 25.

Just read Eammon Brennan’s way to early top 25 for college basketball next year on ESPN. No mention of State. Not even in the honorable mentions. FSU made the top 25 with Miami and VT honorable mentions. The more I think about it, the more I like that we are under the radar. We generally wilt in the preseason spotlight and it’s much more gratifying when they never see you coming.

    Got it. Agreed.

If we sign some studs in 2017 then we could start to develop a year to year consistency. We’ve offered 35 plus in the 2017 class with the vast majority being ranked. As long as we can win the transfer game (which will always be the case with Gottfrieds short rotation) then we can maintain some form of relevance. I’ll take 2-3 years of competing for a top five spot in the ACC.

^Doubt Johnson would start at PG. Dennis is our PG. consider this in terms of NBA potential. Dennis will be a PG at the next level so that is where he will play in college. Not saying you won’t see a 2 PG lineup at times, but DSJ is our primary.

Anyone know where Markell would be ranked if he is 2016?

Either Johnson would be great, we need depth at both positions. If we got both then we could return 9 scholarship players (including Newman) in 2017. Hard not to be optimistic.

I hope we land Gibson Johnson. He would give us a stretch 4 that would be a solid backup for Abu and could free up the paint for Yurtseven given his 3 point range. He would also give us an experienced player to go alongside Freeman in 2017. My only concern is if we land Johnson then Darius Hicks will transfer after his freshmen year. Gottfried will never play 5 post players consistently across 2 spots. Never. odds are we will sign two top 100 posts for the 2017 class. On top of that we will probably land two guards. Understand we are targeting a solid portion of the 2017 class that is ranked in the top 100. Land 3 or 4 guys and 2017 is a young but capable team. Gottfried made the right move in his Pierre and Schroyer hires. I believe those dividends will pay off in 2017.

Having 2 guys go in the lottery next year will help too :). Abu could even be a first rounder.

Doom and gloom. We should be excited that we could potentially field a top 6 team in the ACC next year (dependent on Yurtsevens eligibility). We actually have a talented roster and a legitimate starting 5 that all rank as top 50 recruits coming out of high school. Not many teams have that. Give credit where credit is due and get off your pedalstool. Gottfried is a good coach and an exceptional recruiter and has assembled a great recruiting staff. Yes, we lack defensive identity. And yes, we lose transfers regularly but who doesn’t? There were almost 1,000 transfers this year. It’s an epidemic. I say good riddance to the Martin twins. They were inconsistent and were hardly ACC caliber starters. Unless you want to be Wake Forest or BC? Any takers?

The fact is since Valvano, State has struggled to regain our identity as a premiere basketball program. And now with an absolutely loaded ACC, the challenge is even harder. I am patient enough to recognize that we have a good situation with Gottfried as he has proven multiple times that he has the ability to field a competitive ball club and make a run in the dance. I can live with a sweet 16 and elite 8 run every 4 years. If you expect more than that then you’re probably voting for Bernie Sanders. Understand this is a marathon and not a 100 meter dash. It takes time to return to prominence. Enjoy the ride. With the exception of last year, it has been invigorating to watch Gottfried’s teams in action across a season. You cannot deny that he always has them playing their best basketball in March.

Thanks for the forum info Wufpacker. It’s been a long while since I’ve posted so I didn’t realize the rise of the forums. I appreciate everything you guys do with this site. Every State fan needs an outlet.

I’m not a troll. I graduated in ’06 with a BS in Food Science. maybe the fact that I’m 33 makes me a troll. I was born not long before Whittenberg’s “pass.” The Gator Bowl win against ND is the best win I’ve seen in person. Good times…

Surprised there hasn’t been a post regarding the amended NOA the Cheats received. Seems to me this site has really been slacking. No Yurtseven post either? Glad baseball has been doing well. Wrestling for that matter too. I miss the bread and butter though…

The effort was surely there tonight. Our kids played hard but the challenge was too great. It takes a lot to go on the road and play an undefeated, top ten team and come out with a win. Virginia’s defense speaks for itself, it is tough, aggressive, well-disciplined play from all five guys. Our team is young, which by the way is not designed to be an excuse, it is a simple fact. Outside of Turner, Lacey and Lee (who I don’t think played tonight), our roster is all freshmen and sophomores. Considering the challenge, I thought our team played to its ability…and it kept us in the game. Maybe by the end of the year we can win a game like that. Ultimately the guards need to be better at running the offense and the post needs to be more productive. You can’t run the high post offense without a capable post. Part of the reason for the struggle at point is this very reason.

The refs were highly disappointing (big shocker there). They were not the reason we lost the game, but the unwarranted bias that defensive teams like Virginia get is ridiculous. We saw it in the West Virginia game earlier this year: teams that play physical and constantly push, body check, reach in, and flat out go over/through people rarely get the whistle for what is an obvious foul. I remember seeing Lacey literally get shoved after he caught the ball in the lane on an in-bounds play in the second half…no call. “Defensive” teams get rewarded for playing physical whereas “average, NC State type teams” get the whistle everytime. Ref bias is a part of today’s game and it goes beyond the Karl Hess/Ted Valentine NC State hate-fest; it has become a playing style bias. That and Duke and Carolina can’t do wrong either. Can’t wait to watch the whistles in those games.

    On to the next one…

All in all I would not consider tonight’s loss a bad loss. Unfortunately it comes at a bad time as we have to play the best team in the conference next, followed by you know who.

Anybody else think his arms look swole as hell in the picture at the top of the thread? They didn’t look that big on the field LOL

Bo is a good kid, wish him the best. Maurice Trowell will fill in nicely.
