    bill,

Old line State men are all about irony and pain, your points are taken. I appreciate the tone and depth.

Herb Sendek and dapper Dave were and are the perfect fits for State. From an architectural standpoint they are Bauhaus with a cheap paint. They look efficient but they lack balance, detail and are not functional whereas many other places are vitruvian in scale, balance and they work.

It is simple in essence. The mind knows when it works and when it does not.

I’d let a non affiliated, old school, non PCUSA Presbyterian minister (a man too boot) pick the coaches.

That is a new one on me.

I’d say building an international airport on Ocracoke would make as much sense as putting a vet school at A&T.

    bill,

I have written long and extensively about the unc attempt to deny ECU a medical school. The efforts were downright devious, all an effort to glorify the rectum of the state.

As for the MBA thing from State, I recall an old and long departed friend (class of 55) talking about one of first CHASS majors leaping from the library and killing himself. To a man (and State had men then, ROTC was required) they wondered why in the hell State bothered with such non-sense.

Now I’m going to watch an episode of Father Brown.

    I’ve never denied my simplicity.

In fact I think along such simple lines I knew cheesy Seinfeld out takes on a Jumbotron would come across as cheesy and cheap during a college football game. Braveheart charge clips and sound so loud it drowns out the band, not worth mentioning.

And that doesn’t even include notions of fake rocks in a tunnel or wet looking coyote statues being passed off as wolves.

    Carry on.

With past hires it’s almost like we are afraid of trying to be great.

They aren’t afraid. They don’t know how.

Find someone that knows people that know how and hire them to hire people that know how.

    1) unc and its supporters in the state legislature worked overtime to deny a public university medical school outside of the one in chapel hill. Their claim was that Duke and Wake Forest had medical schools and those would help serve the needs of the state properly. This was not a political position either like the denial of funds to expand Hwy 421 west of Winston-Salem because that section of the state leaned Republican in the 50s-60s but rather this was based on a desire to horde all of the funding for the one public medical school.

So for the funds and the glory of unc, its supporters were ready and willing to deny the people of eastern North Carolina a medical school which would have and has rendered excellent medical services and extension.

That should hang around unc’s neck like a millstone.

    2) I’ll SLUR all I want and as much as I like before, during or after OR WITHOUT a cold Old Milwaukee.

    Grow a pair.

Truth is… there’s always been a little something in the water between Hillsborough and Western…

Remember Lou, for all his faults, left, for among other reasons, a professor. And no, after 40 yrs, NCSU not the MIT of the South, either. With or without two campus, the latter being the unofficial future memorial to Gubernor Tuliplips, and in spite of the fact that NCState abdicated it’s charter and gave ECU an engineering school for the kids it no longer wanted…

    NCState is still NCState…. sorta….

Excellent tone and content. That statement, missed by the lesser in thought, just about covers it in total. A slap at one if the biggest cons in the history of North Carolina politics, on point about the overloading of CHASS hence the increased number of split tails from every cul de sac that has covered an old farm plot in Mecklenburg, Wake, Guilford or Forsyth County, and the acknowledgement that the “institution” can not even lay claim to fulfilling what it was created to do.

    Bravo.

If the above is indeed the case, as I believe it to be then dapper Dave Doeren is the perfect coach for a soulless, empty, vapid collection of buildings and mottos.

Thank you for the insight on the Herman situation. I think that hire is very instructional (ain’t they all) as to the proper path when seeking success. Herman had experience at multiple levels none of which involved head coaching but he was involved in the workings of high end programs (Ohio State) and the dramatic improvements in lower level programs (Iowa State).

One of the individuals that stands out to me is Mario Cristobal. He was involved in a dominate college program, he has head coaching as well as extensive positional coaching experience and he is currently the offensive line coach at Alabama. I have no knowledge of him personally but the template for turning a team quickly appears to be hiring off a coaching tree. Saban’s tree has some hits and some misses but I’d chance it before trusting the brain trust in Raleigh to do a damn thing.

I say she was hired in the same nonsense manner by which Sidney Lowe was hired.

Sentiment is for suckers and Saturday evening drinking/poetry readings.

    Rick,

Being free, white and 21 you can do as you please but I’d refrain from guilt by association.

You are not in a tough spot. The lunkheads in Raleigh and the sentimental cesspool of old tired folks that hired Yow are in the tough spot. Her record at Maryland spoke for itself, a decline in the revenue sports and a rise in Title Nine sports and non-revenue sports. There is probably some correlation between the testosterone found among successful football and basketball coaches and how that would come into conflict with Yow. The non-revenue folks are totally beholden to her, the revenue coaches will be inferior hires because she will not stand for a personality that outshines hers. Williams and Sir Fatass as Maryland famously did not get along with her if memory serves right.

She will stand by her hire. I expect he will have at least 5 years and as long as State people keep showing up then maybe another year or so.

As for other comments as to how Briles or a coach like him has no connection to the area thus is a risk, how dost thou continue with the Midwestern drone of dapper Dave?

    Old stand bys:

    Everybody loves a winner

    Good losers are frequent losers

    Just win baby

Three types of people-people that watch things happen, people that make things happen and people that don’t know what the hell happened.

    Losing is for losers.

    Learn to hate.

The talent level is not high in Raleigh nor is the coaching level. To suppose State will catch a break here or there, wishing for this or wishing for that are hyperbole. The o line play is weak, the wideouts lack speed experience and depth, QB play has no tangible experience, and the linebackers and secondary are weak(pretty weak last year for certain). The kicking game is in complete question but for some reason that is not mentioned much when you are pulling kids from unc-Pembroke.

State has depth on the defensive line and experience. There is depth at running back.

I attended a funeral and it sounds like I had a less miserable time than the rest of you.
It appears it takes five years to build a team to beat ECU but only one year to build a team to beat ncsu.

    That is pretty damn funny.

I’m watching a special on the Black Death and enjoying it much more than most any State sporting event.

Really neat part concerns the wills being written near death, good stuff.

NC State has needed an enema for 25 years plus.

They know they don’t have to hire well or manage well because they also know how loyal the fan base will remain.

To paraphrase a bunch of hippies:

Turn off, tune out, drop out.
