Game Thread: Wolfpack Football vs Monarchs of Old Dominion

OK, so I know that a lot of folks are of the mindset of “WTF???  Why are we playing an away game vs ODU?”

There’s a lot of reasons, I’m sure.  But the biggest one(s) is we needed a game, and I suspect the payout was attractive enough.  There’s also that pesky little thing about the staff wanting to make some recruiting inroads in the area so, yeah.

The Pack will have the distinction of being the first BCS conference program to visit the Monarchs in Norfolk, so there’s that FWIW (I don’t have a citation to prove that, but I did hear it or read it somewhere earlier this week), which might also help with the ‘foot in the door’ type of thing as far as recruiting.

Personally, I don’t mind going on the road to ODU regardless of the ‘real‘ reasons, and my reasoning is much simpler.  Road games are a totally different animal from the comfort of the home atmosphere, and all which that implies.  I think it’s good for this team to get a road game under their belts early, and doing so against a lesser opponent allows for some adjusments, hopefully without taking an L.  No offense whatsoever to ODU is intended….but they ain’t exactly Virginia Tech or Florida State.  Or even Wake Forest for that matter….at least I don’t think they are.  Wake is pretty bad, though, in spite of what their 3 point thrashing of West Point might tell you differently.

That being said, Old Dominion IS an FBS program, even if only for a little over 14 months.

The point being, getting on the road and getting the road kinks out against that sort of an opponent might pay dividends later.

Or it might not.  It’s very possible I’m just talking out of my ass right now.  It’s been known to happen on occasion.

But like it or don’t, the Pack will take the field in Norfolk at 7pm.

And bear in mind, the win over ODU last year in Raleigh wasn’t exactly a cakewalk (see below).  Just saying.

There’s been some talk of the TV availability for tonight’s game.

It’s being carried by the American Sports Network (ASN), which locally will be carried on Channel 28 WRDC.  Which as we’ve been informed about here, is NOT actually channel number 28 on TWC cable, as if anyone gave a shit.  It might be 12, it might be 10, it might be 1215, who the fuq knows?  I would advise you to open your onscreen guide (and your eyes) and look for the fricking game at 7pm, if not earlier.  You’re all adults allegedly, I’m sure most of you can find it if you look hard enough.

The rest of the ASN affiliates listed nationwide can be found here.

For those who aren’t in an area where one of the ASN affiliates can reach you, check out that same SFN forums thread, as there is some info as far as how to get the game via interweb streaming there as well, which you might want to try out.

So I’m in a bit of quandary as to what to link to as far as mojo-vational type stuff.

Let’s try this….In no particular order…

Last week’s EKU win…

Last year’s ODU win in Raleigh…

And a little sumpin’ sumpin’ for you perverts…

35-0, go to a game. I get it smart asses, just saying it’d be nice to routinely beat teams of this caliber by more than 20 points.

Who’s this whiney ass? Did ‘Alum44 get an intern?

ODU is not top 25, but they are a solid team, solid program. Best team the ‘Pack has faced thus far in 2015. And unless my math is failing me, the Wolfpack did beat a team of that caliber by more than 20 points.

Also look at UW-Troy game in Madison today. The Big10 power at home struggled for a half and did not really pound them into submission.

My first trip to this high school type stadium. Great win for the team, especially with an ailing quarterback.

Haha, yes it was definitely a high school type stadium. I laughed when we tried to go out one gate for a beer at halftime, and were told re-entries aren’t allowed. So we went to the next gate where they were letting people go out to have a cigarette and come back in. The beer tasted just as good going out that gate.

Not a bad game overall, but I think there are still some things to clean up before we get into the ACC schedule. Pass coverage looks a little shaky, and we have been helped by the other team dropping passes in all three games. I’m worried we could get burned big time here. The other is we don’t seem to have any kind of a vertical passing game. I know we’re running the ball really well, and the short passes are working, but we need some semblance of a deep threat. So far it’s been a combination of the receivers not getting any separation, and Jacoby not looking their way when they do separate. I’m hoping its because DD is keeping things pretty vanilla until we play tougher teams.

I was also walking out beside Jacoby, and he had a noticeable limp. I think it might have happened on his long run late in the 3rd qtr. Hope it’s just a minor thing.

Hopefully after the next game. We will be ready for the ACC, and Louisville, running a non vanilla game. Anything less will not do.

Read somewhere that we are 6-0 ats – that’s impressive from both a coaching and execution standpoint.

Next week’s opponent is even so we will have to keep improving.

We are favored by about 16, not even. Not that we can waltz in and win going away.

I sometimes forget that the “line” we get is based on how much is being bet on one team or the other, not relative strengths. If you looked at last year’s record, you would think all our games would be closer than they are.

I could be mistaken, but I think he meant they were “even” at covering the spread, as compared to the Wolfpack, which is 6-0 in its last 6.

Or maybe he didn’t. Hell, I don’t know.

But does this mean I have to bet on the ‘Pack to cover again, to keep up the mojo?

    Yes.
