November 23/24 Open Football Thread

There’s one good game (TAMU at LSU, CBS) and one snow game (Stormin’ Mormons at Gold-headed Catholics, NBC) on right now. Enjoy!

Don’t forget two key games later tonight – Mizzou at Ole Miss (7:45, ESPN) and Baylor at Okie State (8:00, ABC).

Beloved Pey Pey and crew invade the Massholes in the Sunday night game tomorrow.

Before that, the Panthers plan to Ice Up the Fins.

Looking that way so far at least.

They have a way of making things interesting sometimes though.

Coyotes trying to kill an early man down situation vs the Ducks for hooking. Still a scoreless tie.

If you soccer hooligans can have your fun then so can I 🙂

DAMMIT!!!! As I’m typing that the Ducks get the PP goal. 1-0 Anaheim.

“How did Steve addizio win at bc with less talent than state?”

So we’re back to throwing stones at our coach again? BC doesn’t have less talent. They have much more, including a better than servicable QB and a solid defense.

“So we’re back to throwing stones at our coach again?”

    Back to?

10-zip Mizzou…but they lettin’ Johnny Reb hang around just like they did the Chickens a few weeks back.

Interesting race to serve as cannon fodder for Roll Damn Tide.

    Oops. Good point, Wuf’

“I also wouldn’t bet a wooden nickel on Manziel’s NFL chances.”

I might, and even a little more, but only if I got the right odds.

    Like that Idaho moneyline? LOL

You know, when a sportsbook calls the line as 59.5, and the final margin is 60, you just have to think that betting on games is a bad idea.

I stayed today until the 4th Q, then had to leave. This game was much like the “Amato game” vs ECU, just prior to Chuck’s firing later that night. The main difference was that today, we were beaten much worse today than we were that infamous night several years ago.

As a season-ticket holder for both football and basketball, what happened this week has to raise a red flag about the future of Wolfpack sports, especially in basketball. When you lose at home by double-digits to NC Central and then have your heads handed to you 4 days later in C-F by ECU, you have to wonder just where we’re headed. UP is the logical answer, but to me it’s more like an uphill climb just to get to the bottom.

A testimony to this was the News & Observer’s front sports page last Thursday, in which the state of UNC’s basketball woes was headlined equally with our loss to Central. Carolina is SUPPOSED to be good, we are NOT!

I don’t follow recruiting the way many of you do, but honestly, we are bankrupt for talent right now in our revenue sports. I guess seeing the Burlesons, Holts and Caldwells of the past, paraded on the field this afternoon, makes you wonder when, if ever, we’ll bring any more potential hall of famers to our campus.

We’ve had some marginal ACC-level talent in basketball in the past few years, but the attitudes of many of these players makes me wish we’d quit taking guys like the two hot dogs from last season, and most know who I’m talking about. I’m not alarmed about our football and basketball coaches (not yet, anyway), but I swear, it seems to me that the good athletes, both physically and academically, simply aren’t coming here.

Our women’s basketball team hasn’t been good in some time, and the soccer teams can’t even make the ACCT while the league is dominating nationally. Baseball is very good right now, but wasn’t before Carlos Rodon arrived, and he’ll be gone after this coming season.

But honestly, folks- the mess on the field today is simply too broad to cover in one stroke of the brush. No coach, not even a Spurrier, could make anything out of this assembled bunch of supposed football players. We have no QBs, no O-line, no pass defense, no big-play people, and apparently a diminishing passion, not only on the field but in the stands. If you can’t get up for ECU, then just who CAN you get up for?

This is my observation of where we are right now, and please don’t think I’m being critical of Wolfpack sports, which I continue to support. But I feel that something’s got to change, and soon. I just don’t like the direction we seem to be headed in, and with the damned ACC expansion now thrust upon us, things could well get worse for us.

“….but I swear, it seems to me that the good athletes, both physically and academically, simply aren’t coming here.”

Given recent recruiting results, I’m not at all certain I understand your conclusion here.

Glad you guys got such a good return on your investment for selling out on your team today. Was heart-warming to be regaled by the chants of PURPLE….GOLD…PURPLE,,,GOLD in our own stadium.

    KMA….

  14. Wufpacker 11/23/2013 at 9:30 PM #

Cowboys looked tough on that drive. That was a helluva coupla tosses to finish that off.

Baylor better find something to play for at halftime. They look nearly as uninspired as….well, I won’t say it.

“It was a season of inches”, Chuck said hours before he was fired after the ECU loss.

    Still makes me giggle.

Hopefully DD is in DY’s office Monday morning, telling her we can’t schedule them ever again. Just a terrible environment for selling a program.

The people have spoken, and it’s about damned time that the decisionmakers hear them.

  17. Wufpacker 11/23/2013 at 9:37 PM #

Perhaps this is Baylor’s and UCLA’s problem collectively…

  18. BJD95 11/23/2013 at 9:41 PM #

You certainly can hold down the Baylor offense if the refs won’t call defensive holding. That dude was double arm barred for a full ten yards. Yeesh.

  19. Wufpacker 11/23/2013 at 9:50 PM #

UCLA making a push now, 38-33 FFS with 10 to play.

“what happened this week has to raise a red flag about the future of Wolfpack sports especially in basketball. ”

I’ve seen a lot of folks expressing similar sentiments. I don’t get it.

I look at their coach, their team from last year, and their returning players. I match that up in a mid Nov game against an NC State team with 2 sophomore “veterans”, one coming in with only 3 or 4 starts, a transfer, a JUCO, an injured tall, goofy Aussie, a bunch of freshmen, and a handfull of walk-ons.

If this game were in February, I’d expect a victory. As it was, I saw it as a close toss up. Considering the foul trouble, missed minutes, and 3 starters fouled out by the final OT buzzer, I’m not disheartened. In fact, this being a November game, I took away more positives than negatives.

2nd intermission, and the Ducks are raping the Coyotes without lube, 4-1.

Where’s highstick? He’d talk hockey with me.

You damn soccer hooligans….get off my lawn.

  22. BJD95 11/23/2013 at 9:56 PM #

I like the cut of UCLA’s jib. They are good tv, at least.

  23. Wufpacker 11/23/2013 at 9:57 PM #

And I was promised snow in Boulder. WTF???
