Weekend Sports Open Thread

Tonight, you have Louisville’s last legitimate chance to lose – and spare us the vomit-inducing “they can only play the schedule they have” pablum from the talking heads. As I have noted before, I wouldn’t have Louisville in my Top 10, and tOSU wouldn’t make my Top 5. Schedules matter, and fetishizing undefeatedness is stupid. There’s also my beloved baseball Cardinals trying to make Fox execs cry by eliminating the Dodgers.

The Pack also has its not-quite-midnight madness event tonight, and maybe some folks can report back. I believe its also streaming on GoPack.com this year, which is nice (if it works).

Tomorrow is headlined by Texas A&M vs. Auburn (3:30, CBS) and of course, Florida State at Clemson (8:00, ABC). This game is really the Noles’ first test, but not Clemson’s. I think that, plus home field, are sufficient to spring the Tiggers to victory. And into clear pole position if Bama or Oregon loses – Clemson is the one team that (in my humble but correct opinion) plays a tough enough slate to not need Bama to lose twice.

Sunday’s RedZone Channel-gasm will be a mere appetizer to Peyton Manning taking my beloved Broncos to Indy to shut Jim Irsay’s fat, stupid mouth. Run up the score, John Fox. My fantasy team needs it.

With the Pack on bye, we can just enjoy sports without the usual quota of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Plus the Holes have already lost. Huzzah.

Duke and UVa are playing today.

In case anyone had overlooked that marquee matchup.

    Cavs up 14-0.

The ACC today is a study in extremes. The best game of the year, and loads of hot garbage.

The first quarter of TAMU/Aubie took like 65 minutes. The game might last until the Death Valley kickoff (I would be happy about that).

By contrast, we are already under 5 minutes left in the HALF in Palo Alto.

The term “Dumpster Fire” has rarely been more apropos.

My hope is that the hype from Clemson, SC can live up.

Big drive for the Aggies here. Shocking that Iowa leads at halftime. They are lousy.

That Evans dude is ridiculously good.

    .. at the half….

    Wake…. 24
    twerps … 3

‘Cuse vs GT isn’t so much a statement about how bad the Wolfpack is, more so a statement about match ups.

Cougar Bowl is entertaining. 38-34 at the half.

It’s a little easier watching Campanaro tear up MD’s secondary. I can’t believe how poorly teams adjust to him. He is clearly going to come under zone coverage. Put your best man on him and shadow him every play.

I will predict this now – Johnny Manziel will be a whole lot of nothing at the NFL level.

Assuming the scores hold up (and Clemson wins), this would be my Top 5:

    1) Bama
    2) Oregon
    3) Clemson
    4) TAMU
    5) LSU

If Florida State wins, I have them 5th with the SEC Westers up a slot. I would have Mizzou ahead of tOSU, just according to the eye test.

Indiana/Michigan on BTN is an entertaining game between two pretty bad teams. Better entertainment than UCLA shitting themselves against Stanford.

You have to love a good jail break!

    Come on Auburn!

  16. Wulfpack 10/19/2013 at 6:18 PM #

Oregon is my number one. I don’t think anyone has played better this year. Then Bama and Clemson/FSU winner. Bama will have no easy time getting out of the West. It will be interesting to see what the first BCS standings show. FSU/Clemson winner needs Miami to keep winning. Could set up a very meaningful ACC Championship game for once.

  17. BJD95 10/19/2013 at 6:25 PM #

Good point re Miami. FSU especially would benefit from that, if they are the only team to beat Da U (once in regular season, once in title game). VPI or GT winning the Coastal would really tarnish the overall resume.

Nice fake FG from the Aggies. Probably a back breaker.

  19. BJD95 10/19/2013 at 6:41 PM #

Indiana scores to pull within 49-47. Still 12 minutes left. No defense in Ann Arbor.

  20. BJD95 10/19/2013 at 6:48 PM #

Aubie within 3 and Manziel is out with a shoulder injury (seemingly pretty serious).

  21. Wulfpack 10/19/2013 at 7:00 PM #

    Oh my.

  22. BJD95 10/19/2013 at 7:03 PM #

    Manziel gonna try to play.

    Malzahn for national COY.

  23. MrPlywood 10/19/2013 at 7:03 PM #

SEC refs clearly don’t know that you’re supposed to blow any sideline play dead if the runner within a foot of going out.

  24. BJD95 10/19/2013 at 7:05 PM #

He may be an asshole, but he’s tough. Not milking it, that dude is hurting bad.

  25. Texpack 10/19/2013 at 7:06 PM #

Auburn will be top 10 if they hold on.

If Clemson runs the table they should play for the title before Bama does based on better wins/schedule.
