Weekend Sports Open Thread

Tonight, you have Louisville’s last legitimate chance to lose – and spare us the vomit-inducing “they can only play the schedule they have” pablum from the talking heads. As I have noted before, I wouldn’t have Louisville in my Top 10, and tOSU wouldn’t make my Top 5. Schedules matter, and fetishizing undefeatedness is stupid. There’s also my beloved baseball Cardinals trying to make Fox execs cry by eliminating the Dodgers.

The Pack also has its not-quite-midnight madness event tonight, and maybe some folks can report back. I believe its also streaming on GoPack.com this year, which is nice (if it works).

Tomorrow is headlined by Texas A&M vs. Auburn (3:30, CBS) and of course, Florida State at Clemson (8:00, ABC). This game is really the Noles’ first test, but not Clemson’s. I think that, plus home field, are sufficient to spring the Tiggers to victory. And into clear pole position if Bama or Oregon loses – Clemson is the one team that (in my humble but correct opinion) plays a tough enough slate to not need Bama to lose twice.

Sunday’s RedZone Channel-gasm will be a mere appetizer to Peyton Manning taking my beloved Broncos to Indy to shut Jim Irsay’s fat, stupid mouth. Run up the score, John Fox. My fantasy team needs it.

With the Pack on bye, we can just enjoy sports without the usual quota of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Plus the Holes have already lost. Huzzah.

    LSU also back within 17-7.

Seriously, FSU has to be averaging at least 10 yards per pass play (including QB scrambles).

Next week’s game will make prison rape look civilized by comparison.

Mak4dpak, add to that 8 other starters out. We may lose to FSU, but there are 5 other winnable games.

  4. BJD95 10/19/2013 at 9:21 PM #

Clemson is a fast team. And FSU makes them look like they are running through molasses.

  5. PackFamily 10/19/2013 at 9:22 PM #

    Boyd is definitely off tonight.

Poor field position management. Instead of at least getting into field goal position on 3rd and 16, Clemson nets like 21 yards on a punt.

At least Clemson’s cheerleaders brought their A game. I approve.

We’re gonna be warped, carded, woven, cut and sewn at the Doak next week.

And then after the first quarter is over… it will get worse.

So is that a WTF loss for Maryland??? I guess State will not be topping GT any time soon. Sweet time at Keenan Thursday night. Not as good as the 12-9 State win in the early 1990’s. I just love it when the UNX fans think they can win. Go Pack!

Speaking of prison rape…Clemson’s secondary just dropped the soap in the shower. Doh.

    New Top 5:

    1) Bama
    2) Oregon
    3) FSU
    4) Stanford
    5) Mizzou

There will be no joy in Tiger Town tonight.

Tajh Boyd is a beaten man. Clemson is a beaten team. I didn’t see this one coming, not one bit.

  13. Texpack 10/19/2013 at 9:57 PM #

Noles can put this one away with a TD before the half. Winston be the real deal.

Days like today remind me why I rarely gamble on sports. 😀

    Nite all

Tiggers are getting beat in more ways than one…

Noles will double down in the second half…

Ole Miss finding a way to keep the Bayou Bengals in the game.

So, is FSU back? I think so….best FSU team I’ve seen in 13 years. Their defense may not be 90s level, but it seems close. Jameis Winston is something else!

  19. Wufpacker 10/19/2013 at 10:29 PM #

Eminem isn’t as hot as Carrie Underwood. Or even Faith Hill for that matter.

That’s my takeaway wisdom for the evening.

Oh….and FSU is gonna murderize us next week.

  20. Texpack 10/19/2013 at 10:37 PM #

Winston makes Johnny Football look like Marcus Stone.

  21. Wulfpack 10/19/2013 at 10:37 PM #

FSU is back and Winston is the real deal. Night all.

  22. Texpack 10/19/2013 at 10:44 PM #

Ole Miss to the Top 10.

This means Bama might have their best win vs VT

  23. bill.onthebeach 10/19/2013 at 10:57 PM #

All over but the crying… down in Death Valley….

Boyd hadn’t run the ball this half and is not putting full weight on right foot when passing….

….. and now he’s dropped his head.

Rest of the Tigers to follow ….

Looks like the ACC is getting back to where it was in 1991, when FSU entered the league. It’s again FSU and everybody else. And everyone else is either the same or weaker than they were way back when.

If Alabama and Oregon run the table, they’re in the title game, even if FSU shuts out the rest of its opponents. Wake, Idaho, Syracuse and the Wolfpack will be left for the buzzards, and I don’t see a Miami team that should have lost in Chapel Hill winning in Tallahassee. The only trip-up for the ‘Noles could come in the Swamp on November 30, but this looks less likely with each passing week. If FSU wins the Atlantic Division, the ACC title game will be a cakewalk against the Coastal winner.

The ACC simply isn’t good enough anymore for its champion to be taken seriously on a national level, especially if anyone else from another BCS conference finishes undefeated. And don’t assume that the BCS will rank Ohio State behind FSU if both finish 13-0.

In any event, I’m not looking forward to next Saturday. The current BCS encourages the top teams to run it up and that’s just what will happen in all likelihood.
