Weekend Sports Open Thread

Tonight, you have Louisville’s last legitimate chance to lose – and spare us the vomit-inducing “they can only play the schedule they have” pablum from the talking heads. As I have noted before, I wouldn’t have Louisville in my Top 10, and tOSU wouldn’t make my Top 5. Schedules matter, and fetishizing undefeatedness is stupid. There’s also my beloved baseball Cardinals trying to make Fox execs cry by eliminating the Dodgers.

The Pack also has its not-quite-midnight madness event tonight, and maybe some folks can report back. I believe its also streaming on GoPack.com this year, which is nice (if it works).

Tomorrow is headlined by Texas A&M vs. Auburn (3:30, CBS) and of course, Florida State at Clemson (8:00, ABC). This game is really the Noles’ first test, but not Clemson’s. I think that, plus home field, are sufficient to spring the Tiggers to victory. And into clear pole position if Bama or Oregon loses – Clemson is the one team that (in my humble but correct opinion) plays a tough enough slate to not need Bama to lose twice.

Sunday’s RedZone Channel-gasm will be a mere appetizer to Peyton Manning taking my beloved Broncos to Indy to shut Jim Irsay’s fat, stupid mouth. Run up the score, John Fox. My fantasy team needs it.

With the Pack on bye, we can just enjoy sports without the usual quota of wailing and gnashing of teeth. Plus the Holes have already lost. Huzzah.

Totally unrelated to football, but the White Sox signing Jose Abreu has had me on Cloud 9, 10, 11 and 12 since the news broke last night.

I just worry that he’ll hit a baseball up here and knock me off.

    Woohoo, loved that 3rd inning.

Congratulations BJD. As a lifelong Dodger fan, I hate the Cardinals almost as much as I hate the Giants, but wish them well since we can’t hit Wacha if we were swinging two bats and had seven strikes.

    Go Cards!

Matt Carpenter got it going with that incredible 11 pitch at bat. Great battle of wills between my 1-2 in the MVP voting.

The Dodgers should contend for years to come, though. Very good rotation, and money to burn.

    ‘Ville is trying.

Louisville will lose without a Hail Mary or a defensive penalty.

Nice win for the Fake Resumes!

  9. Wufpacker 10/18/2013 at 11:26 PM #

23 seconds likely wasn’t enough in any case, but they didn’t use it particularly wisely.

LMAO @ the FFR’s of UCF.

  11. Alpha Wolf 10/18/2013 at 11:32 PM #

Great win for UCF, and the first of at least two top ten teams has gone down. Make fun of the résumé all you want, but O’Leary coached a great game and his players played one hell of a second half.

On another note, I just love the atmosphere and the game presentation inside Papa John’s Cardinals Stadium. They had the place rocking all night and it will definitely not be a great place to visit for mid-tier (or lower) ACC teams starting next year.

Yup, they needed some quick slants. No excuse not to at least get 3 plays off before last heave or long FG try.

Your Redbirds one strike away. …

  14. Wufpacker 10/18/2013 at 11:38 PM #

And now….lots of sad Dodger blue.

Tis a happy fun night, no doubt.

    Not in L.A.

    Not in Louisville.

Oh, and probably still not in Chapel Hill either. 🙂

    Anybody but Boston. In anything.

  18. Wufpacker 10/18/2013 at 11:48 PM #

    ^ Damn right.

  19. MrPlywood 10/18/2013 at 11:51 PM #

Woooo – what a beatdown. Great at bats by the Cards, clutch RISP hitting and Beltran gets to the Series. So happy to see Carpenter back at it. Wacha continues to impress. Nice move by Matheny to put Robinson in.

And Puig, LA’s “emotional entertainer”, certainly entertained me tonight.

Mark Gottfried was asked to draw the Wolfpack mascot…

The rest of the ACC’s attempts at their mascots.

Yikes. MG apparently related to Picasso.

Not much art talent in the ACC’s coaching ranks.

Big night for the ACC. The college football world watches as two top five teams vie in a raucous environment. National championship implications. Perhaps Heisman implications.

The ACC is the only league with three remaining unbeatens. Three top 10 teams, and Miami is now sure to move up after Lville’s loss. And Va Tech is quietly moving up in the polls and in the standings, setting up a rumble with Miami in the Coastal for the bid to Charlotte. Good times. Watch and enjoy.

Other games of interest (for me) include Tennessee/South Carolina, Florida/Mizzou, UCLA/Stanford, and Iowa/Ohio State.

  23. BJD95 10/19/2013 at 12:36 PM #

The ACC is still a distant third in conference strength, after the SEC and Pac-12. But that beats distant 5th any day, and the ACC is significantly better than the B1G this year. More than a baby step towards respectability.

Problem is there’s a big dropoff after FSU and Clemson, then another one after Miami and VPI.

Miami will not finish as a Top 10, or even Top 15 team, mark my words.

    ABB (oston)… check
    ABC…. check….
    ABD (odgers)… check….

UofL will add some “spice” to the ACC…. check…

    Now…… LET ‘S GO NOLES !!!

    Kick some tigger arse…..
