Coping With Another Hole Title (Updated 9am Tuesday)

“Our fans are comparing ourselves to Duke and North Carolina. Every program in the country doesn’t do well when you’re compared with those two on a day-to-day basis. I understand that our fans want to be able to compete with them; we all do. But you can be real good on a daily basis and not be better than those two programs.”

Don’t ignore yesterday’s look-in at all sports…but, this morning we have to discuss a little basketball.

Tuesday Update
When NC State gave up basketball in 1990 – the Wolfpack held two National Championships; UNC-CH held two, and Duke held none.

When Lee Fowler was hired as Athletics Director a decade ago – the Wolfpack held two National Championships, UNC-CH held three, and Duke held two.

After ten years of (lack of leadership) from Lee “I know basketball and I have a contract” Fowler – the Wolfpack STILL holds two National Championships, UNC-CH now has five, and Duke now has three.

Great work managing that program, Lee! I could only imagine where we would be if you didn’t ‘know basketball’!

We wrote this highly-trafficked entry when the Tarheels won their National Championship in 2005. We implore you to click on it and give it a read (the charts no longer work) as we see no reason to bust our ass to update it this morning since it still couldn’t be more relevant this morning. The following is a taste:

Good morning, sleepy head!!!

Did you sleep well? Heck, did you sleep at all? Regardless of if you tossed and turned all night, you have awoken to a New World Order!!! Sounds kind of ominous, doesn’t it? No matter, it is true –

You now live in an environment and under a set of circumstances that have LITERALLY NEVER existed as they do today — April 5, 2005. April 7, 2009.

For many, this N.W.O. is nothing that you haven’t felt inside or intuitively known since…oh….about 1995 or so. But, having ‘felt’ it for a decade still may not compensate or serve to ease many Wolfpackers pain this morning. You went to bed last night without letting all of the ramifications of your arch-rival’s newly minted National Championship sink into your system, and you have woken this morning to a landscape that has never existed in the history of NC State’s Basketball program.

As of THIS MORNING, NC State is further behind UNC-CH in National Basketball Titles (and ACC Titles) than we have been at any point in the entire history of college basketball. Additionally, there has never been a day on this earth where BOTH Carolina and Duke held this lead in ACC and National Championships over NC State.

Think about that for a moment…especially you jackasses that constantly degrade our tradition because you can’t grasp its magnitude…and you Fowlerites and Kennellites who openly proclaim that NC State athletics should not strive to contend for Championships or measure to the standards of Carolina and Duke. (I wish that someone would have told us this was NC State’s “not goal” [since we don’t have any goals or measurements] BEFORE we were solicited to pony-up tens of thousands of dollars just to sit in dead arena and watch the college version of the Washington Generals go out and tackle one of the nations worst non-conference schedules on an annual basis.)

[snip]

Lee Fowler is our Athletics Director, and as of THIS MORNING, the Athletics Department that he leads has NEVER, EVER been further behind Carolina’s and Duke’s in championships.

Surely you don’t wonder why this could be the case.

BJD on Monday night
As I have watched UNC play defense all tournament long and dispatch opponents with shocking ease, I have made my piece with Roy Boy getting his second ring. I sure as hell don’t like it, but I can accept it. Suggested coping methods (put yours in the comments):

1) Grudgingly admit that UNC is a worthy champion. Other than Hansbrough’s whiny antics, I have no real disgust for any of their players. They play hard, play together, and keep up an entertaining pace. Contrast that to Deano’s peak years.

2) It will really piss off Coach K. Roy’s run in Chapel Hill is making K so jealous that I believe he would blow Dwon Clifton on TV to sign John Wall. Sorry for the nightmare fuel. As queasy as we will be around 11:28 pm, you can take comfort that at least one man will be even more inconsolable.

3) Feel good for the nice Hole fans that you know. As you know, Hole fans are more prevalent than flies on dogshit in mid-August. Because the sheer numbers are so high, you have to know at least a few that you don’t want to punch. If you’re local, it’s possible a subset of those fans (well, probably all of them) actually went to school there. If you live in Boston, these are probably the same people who pretend that they liked the Patriots before they were good (and strangely don’t know who Steve Grogan is).

That’s all I have. Thank God it will be all over soon, save for the gayest riot you’ve ever seen.

What’s the difference between liking and loving?
    Spitting and swallowing
Coach K must be loving Wall.

It’s not a hatred of Carolina so much that is Jealousy. Damn Straight. I ENVY the Holes Success! We are so far removed from that greatness. Really at this point it is out of my hands. And I find myself relating this shit to dookie and hole fans and they seem somewhat understanding but I know in the back of their mind they are thinking—- Extend Sid’s Contract, Give Fowler some more time. Those holes dont want change for the better. Things are fine just the way they are in their eyes. And BTW, hwsnbn was the best thing since sliced bread according to HOLES.

And to think these Holes will probably win this championship. 6 NCAA Tourney Victories in one year. We have 5 wins since 1991. Pathetic and pitiful. DAMNIT!!!!

    Dear Wolfpacker:

Attached to this email is a link that will direct you to a survey being conducted by a graduate student to help determine what motivates donors to give to athletic fundraising organizations. The survey is also being conducted at two other universities. We have met with this student and instructed him to ensure that all individual results remain confidential. The Wolfpack Club is sending this email directly to you, so that none of your personal information (name, address, email, etc.) will be distributed to an outside party.

Please know that we are only participating in this survey to help us gain an understanding of how we can better serve you.

This link will take you directly to the survey:

Maybe 7 of their players will go pro after this game and the 5 players (22 stars combined) coming in all suck ass for four years.

  6. BladenWolf 04/06/2009 at 9:44 PM #

First of all, let me just say I hate Carolina. I really, really, hate Carolina.
Secondly, this will tangentially bring more pressure on Lowe to “keep up” with the neighborhood competition…Dook and UNX.

    …the National Champions… UNX.

If K lands Wall then the Gods are against us…

  7. Wulfpack 04/06/2009 at 9:46 PM #

Thanks for sharing the survey, BJD. I just ripped it a new one!

  8. LKNpackfan 04/06/2009 at 9:47 PM #

I got the same email, received exactly 2 hrs before this game. If the NCSU administration wasn’t a complete joke I’d surmise it be a clever experiment of the psych dept.

Here’s my “free response” answer at the end:

I wish North Carolina State would show a real commitment to winning instead of just taking my money and telling me to eat my cold, lumpy oatmeal and like it. I wish we proactively sought to compete for championships instead of paying it lip service. NC State athletics acts as if is afraid to succeed, to dare consider that a major state university with a high donor base and rabid fans doesn’t need to be happy with being mediocre or worse.

NC State’s athletic director regularly insults the fans, and continues to bungle even the most obvious personnel situations. Most NC State graduates (like myself) are expected to produce results. Objective, bottom line results. The current NC State administration doesn’t seem to care. Or if they do care, they don’t do anything about it.

Our method seems to be to hope for more Tom O’Brien’s to fall into our laps. Hope is not a strategy.

When I see a strategy (which must include a new athletic director, at least moderate accountability for non-revenue sports, and a basketball coach with a clue how to win at this level), I will pitch in more. Not just skate by (Sendek) or even worse (Lowe).

My family has strong future income potential. I would gladly double my giving level now if NC State athletics would just show me that my money won’t be wasted.

If not, you will get my minimum donation to keep my family’s LTRs until my kids grow up and leave the house (and we drop back to the cellar when O’Brien retires). Because I know NC State will go cheap and take the path of least resistance.

Thanks for the survey. I just sent off a smoking comment.

Who ever reads my comments on the survey eyes are going to start bleeding with the comments I left.
YES- I feel sorry for all those students having to work their asses off and for what a 8-24 season-thats BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
LEADERSHIP OR SHIT ABOUT THE SAME!
    It’s a damn shame- I really loved the university,but now all I get is pain & ulcers.DAMNIT!

  13. GAWolf 04/06/2009 at 10:52 PM #

Congrats to the Heels. They’ve got MCDAA’s passing out water bottles. We’ll never compete with them again until 1) they get a death penalty like investigation and punishment from the NCAA OR we win a national championship in football.

Truthfully, I like Carolina and their players. They talk well, they deserve it for coming back, and I wish I could hate them and Roy. I just can’t.

The fans… totally different situation. My neighbors are outside hollering right now. Honestly, if it were the Pack winning a national championship, I’d be shooting holes in the wall of their homes. So what can I really say other than, “Congrats.”

  14. GAWolf 04/06/2009 at 10:55 PM #

I watched the first half of the game in a bar in Raleigh. I didn’t hear a single Carolina fan mutter a single word of humility. I long for the day Wolfpack fans can be equally as confident. Honestly, it’s not arrogance. They have reason to be that way. Did anyone doubt they’d repeat the beatin’ they put on the Spartans earlier this year? Nope.

  15. bluelena69 04/06/2009 at 10:59 PM #

I sat and watched the whole game. It is numbing. However, it is not the fact that they won. It’s the fact that I look at what they will lose this year…then I consider how badly they should smoke us again next year. Then I think about how there is no real reason why we cannot have what they have. Duke aspires to it. Wake Forest aspires to it. Why don’t we? Hell, I just want to have some hope…or a respectable product on the floor. The only thing holding us back is the leadership at our school.

I hate to say this, but good for them. They DO put a winning product on the floor. They do it right. They don’t have guys loafing up and down the floor. They know how to put the ball in the hole. Then they hustle back and play some nasty good defense. They even got rid of the towel waving punk at the end of the bench.

They show that they have a commitment to winning. They seem to be doing it without a win at all costs mindset too. To say that we cannot compete with them is just unacceptable (and it has been said, as we all know). If we think that, then we should drop intercollegiate athletics altogether. Hell, we should at least aspire to put a product on the floor that can compete with them…to take advantage of some of their mojo, but we cannot even do that right. Instead, we get to be the bastard children…the laughingstock…the scrubs in the hotbed of college basketball. Thanks Coach Fowler and the administration of NC State.

  16. GAWolf 04/06/2009 at 11:05 PM #

They also get the pick of the litter when it comes to highschool basketball players. I could go in there next year, shoot some highschool seniors some shitty jokes and land a top 10 recruiting class. As it is, it will take a major disaster on their end (NCAA violations) or a national championship on our end in football (which undoubtedly raises all of the sports at a university) for us to ever catch up. As long as the status quo remains, we’ll be stuck “shooting threes to catch up to their dunks”. Only a miracle will give us a chance to catch up minus an extraordinary circumstance.

  17. turnoffthetv 04/06/2009 at 11:05 PM #

Just goes to show what a 5 star coach surrounded by 5 star players can accomplish.

Will We ever catch up with the Heels??????

BUT,,,,,,,,,,Just because Lee Fowler has a contract till 2013 doesn’t mean I have to support that SCUMBAG Arrogant LOSER’S BULLSHIT till then.

    I ain’t signed SHIT!

  18. JeremyH 04/06/2009 at 11:07 PM #

“They’ve got MCDAA’s passing out water bottles.”

So true; this was a stacked team, that actually had a backlog of talent because they didn’t finish it up last year. They just have more players with more talent, and taking into account the last game played was just a couple days ago–that makes a huge difference. You can also blame UConn and Pittsburgh, two teams with size and ability to rough up UNC (their only weakness: toughness), for not pulling through.

This was just stupid, now go get drafted and have mediocre careers.

  19. LRM 04/06/2009 at 11:08 PM #

Times like this…it really sucks to be a State fan.

  20. RonTrout 04/06/2009 at 11:09 PM #

I remember feeling this same sense of hopelessness back in 2005. Watching them win a N.C. knowing or coach is a clueless sack of crap and our AD is worse. Things still haven’t changed.

I’m falling on the side of respecting them for what they do, but hate their fans who don’t understand how lucky they are and how hard it is to stay at the levels they do. As much as people rag the guy, I wish we had Baddour. At least he saw what a train wreck Doh was and fired him. We should be so lucky in the next 5 years. I doubt it.

  21. Garrett 04/06/2009 at 11:12 PM #

I usually don’t comment negatively..which is odd considering how much i thoroughly enjoy heated discussion on a myriad of topics from sports to politics to religion.

But, and I am of the variety who thinks a 4th season for sidney was needed ALL things considered, I am so tired of this shit. Congrats to the holes..they were the best team as all thought they would be. But next year its time for sidney and the pack to perform..no questions asked. NCAA tournament or its time to find the coach who will make our program relevant and nationally competitive again.

And as always, thanks to SFN for allowing a place for healthy discussion..and for venting!

  22. packof81 04/06/2009 at 11:14 PM #

I filled out their Mickey Mouse survey and left this comment.

I’ve been out of it for as long as the BBall program has been on life support. It’s clear the administration is not concerned with winning. Their actions or the lack thereof demonstrate that. Has there ever been a more despised AD than we have now? In Chapel Hill tonight, they are painting the town while we sit at home, eating our humble pie. The Wolfpack Club needs to grow some teeth if they want my support.

  23. GAWolf 04/06/2009 at 11:16 PM #

It’s really not “venting” when you’re talking truisms.

So now WRAL is back to “we lost the ACC Tournament on purpose.” But truthfully, it’s sad to say, but Carolina has grown bigger than the ACC Tournament.. that which started it all, “March Madness”. And who started that? We did. And where are we now? Lost.

Cursing does not do us justice.

  24. GAWolf 04/06/2009 at 11:21 PM #

What makes people want to jump over fire? Seriously. I’ve never understood that.
