Coping With Another Hole Title (Updated 9am Tuesday)

“Our fans are comparing ourselves to Duke and North Carolina. Every program in the country doesn’t do well when you’re compared with those two on a day-to-day basis. I understand that our fans want to be able to compete with them; we all do. But you can be real good on a daily basis and not be better than those two programs.”

Don’t ignore yesterday’s look-in at all sports…but, this morning we have to discuss a little basketball.

Tuesday Update
When NC State gave up basketball in 1990 – the Wolfpack held two National Championships; UNC-CH held two, and Duke held none.

When Lee Fowler was hired as Athletics Director a decade ago – the Wolfpack held two National Championships, UNC-CH held three, and Duke held two.

After ten years of (lack of leadership) from Lee “I know basketball and I have a contract” Fowler – the Wolfpack STILL holds two National Championships, UNC-CH now has five, and Duke now has three.

Great work managing that program, Lee! I could only imagine where we would be if you didn’t ‘know basketball’!

We wrote this highly-trafficked entry when the Tarheels won their National Championship in 2005. We implore you to click on it and give it a read (the charts no longer work) as we see no reason to bust our ass to update it this morning since it still couldn’t be more relevant this morning. The following is a taste:

Good morning, sleepy head!!!

Did you sleep well? Heck, did you sleep at all? Regardless of if you tossed and turned all night, you have awoken to a New World Order!!! Sounds kind of ominous, doesn’t it? No matter, it is true –

You now live in an environment and under a set of circumstances that have LITERALLY NEVER existed as they do today — April 5, 2005. April 7, 2009.

For many, this N.W.O. is nothing that you haven’t felt inside or intuitively known since…oh….about 1995 or so. But, having ‘felt’ it for a decade still may not compensate or serve to ease many Wolfpackers pain this morning. You went to bed last night without letting all of the ramifications of your arch-rival’s newly minted National Championship sink into your system, and you have woken this morning to a landscape that has never existed in the history of NC State’s Basketball program.

As of THIS MORNING, NC State is further behind UNC-CH in National Basketball Titles (and ACC Titles) than we have been at any point in the entire history of college basketball. Additionally, there has never been a day on this earth where BOTH Carolina and Duke held this lead in ACC and National Championships over NC State.

Think about that for a moment…especially you jackasses that constantly degrade our tradition because you can’t grasp its magnitude…and you Fowlerites and Kennellites who openly proclaim that NC State athletics should not strive to contend for Championships or measure to the standards of Carolina and Duke. (I wish that someone would have told us this was NC State’s “not goal” [since we don’t have any goals or measurements] BEFORE we were solicited to pony-up tens of thousands of dollars just to sit in dead arena and watch the college version of the Washington Generals go out and tackle one of the nations worst non-conference schedules on an annual basis.)

[snip]

Lee Fowler is our Athletics Director, and as of THIS MORNING, the Athletics Department that he leads has NEVER, EVER been further behind Carolina’s and Duke’s in championships.

Surely you don’t wonder why this could be the case.

BJD on Monday night
As I have watched UNC play defense all tournament long and dispatch opponents with shocking ease, I have made my piece with Roy Boy getting his second ring. I sure as hell don’t like it, but I can accept it. Suggested coping methods (put yours in the comments):

1) Grudgingly admit that UNC is a worthy champion. Other than Hansbrough’s whiny antics, I have no real disgust for any of their players. They play hard, play together, and keep up an entertaining pace. Contrast that to Deano’s peak years.

2) It will really piss off Coach K. Roy’s run in Chapel Hill is making K so jealous that I believe he would blow Dwon Clifton on TV to sign John Wall. Sorry for the nightmare fuel. As queasy as we will be around 11:28 pm, you can take comfort that at least one man will be even more inconsolable.

3) Feel good for the nice Hole fans that you know. As you know, Hole fans are more prevalent than flies on dogshit in mid-August. Because the sheer numbers are so high, you have to know at least a few that you don’t want to punch. If you’re local, it’s possible a subset of those fans (well, probably all of them) actually went to school there. If you live in Boston, these are probably the same people who pretend that they liked the Patriots before they were good (and strangely don’t know who Steve Grogan is).

That’s all I have. Thank God it will be all over soon, save for the gayest riot you’ve ever seen.

SFN, would be nice if this were a family friendly site. Please put a filter on for all the F-bombs being dropped.

Glad it is over. Hansb is gone, thank god.
U do have to give credit to this team for getting it done. They by far were the best team this year. Lawson really made all the difference in contending versus winning.
U also would have to consider this team as one of the best of all time- hate to say that but not many teams walked through the tournament as easy as this team did.

Who is EVE CARSON ?Congrats to UNC for a great season well coached and great execution. Our dislike of UNC is nothing more than envy{” a desire for another’s attainment”}.ncsu sports sucks.

RE: Update- I agree Fowler is primarily responsible, but we can’t leave out the administrators and coaches that have let this happen as well.

  5. Noah 04/07/2009 at 8:00 AM #

The only team in the last 20 years as good as this UNC team is that UK team from, what, 1996? The one where Ron Mercer was the seventh man on the team.

^Whitefang, all you have to do is ask the wanna-be what does unx do for the state NOW and what have been their significant economic contributions, through education, to the state of NC in the last 50 years. I have found that to be a much better shut-down, shutup method than “did you actually go to unx”. That question will simply open a pandoras box of justifications. I have 2 good friends who went to the hole and they are both embarrrassed by the unx wearing t-shirt, sweatsuit, hat on backwards idiots who cannot shutup.

Congrats to the holes. You go out and get YOUR coach, who gets HIS players, coupled with absolute support from the administration and look what it produces in 5 years. If you want a model of success you don’t have to go far to find it. Thanks SFN for re-posting the foul-up article to illustrate once again how incompetence is being rewarded in the form of our AD. Money talks people. When it stops flowing we will see change.

Eve Carson was the UNC student body president who got car-jacked and murdered about a year ago. (horrible story…she seemed like the kind of girl everyone would want their son to marry)

…and I was just telling a coworker this morning that the only reason Carolina is so good is because NC State refuses to be anything other than bad.

I’m so disgusted at Oblinger, Fowler and Lowe that words can’t really be put on a message board. Instead of operating a meritocracy, Fowler and his gang have created a mediocracy. NC State should never settle for second best.

I can accept Carolina beating us. I can not accept refusing to compete. We have been refusing to compete since 1992.

This is a great UNC team, and they played a GREAT NCAA tournament, culminated by a dominating performance in the title game. I wouldn’t say this is the best team of the last 20 years though…they are ONE of the best. Others that could claim to be the ‘best of the last 20 years’:

1992 Duke (I think they lost 2 games..)
    1996 Kentucky
    2001 Duke
    2007 Florida

The 1999 Duke team that went undefeated in the ACC, won the ACC Tournament, and then romped to the NCAA title game and lost to UConn may have been the best of all. I think their average margin of victory in ACC GAMES that year was 20+ points.

If I had to pick the team that I thought was the best of the last 20 years, I’d go with the 1992 Duke team (Laettner, Hurley, Grant Hill..)

So, is the athletics dept ‘shake-up’ dead, or are we still waiting, or do we not know??

But you can be real good on a daily basis and not be better than those two programs.

If those were the only two programs that State has had problems with over the last decade, then he might have a point (but it’s still a loser’s point).

I have to say, I’m pretty dang gay today.

  12. Noah 04/07/2009 at 8:33 AM #

I have to say, I’m pretty dang happy today.

    Congratulations.

And as a State fan, I’m obliged to say:

F*** you! You suck! Go back to your own board! You’re gay! You’re liberal! I hate you! Waaaah! You cheated! It’s not fair! Mom likes you more! We’re better! We were robbed! Wait ’till next second/minute/hour/day/month/week/year/decade/century/millenia!

Isn’t that how little brothers act?

  13. Par Shooter 04/07/2009 at 8:39 AM #

To me coping with how horrible our program has been and how little interest anyone in power has in fixing the mess is much tougher than coping with unc-ch continuing to be good. Congrats to them.

  14. BillyTheKid 04/07/2009 at 8:40 AM #

That was great Noah but, I think of us more as the red headed step child than the little brother:>

  15. Daily Update 04/07/2009 at 8:40 AM #

UNC winning this title doesn’t bother me. They have all of the best players and somehow these guys stuck around for 3 or 4 years. Right now, I feel like UNC should go semi-pro and play at another level than a program like NC State. Or maybe we should drop down to the Southern Conference?

I will payoff my LTRs and give the minimum to keep them as long as Lee Fowler is at NC State. His continued employment makes absolutely no sense. His employment tells me that we have minimal expectations in the athletic department, so I am going to do my part as well and give the minimum.

  16. chris92heel 04/07/2009 at 8:49 AM #

    lol noah. And thanks.

keep up the good fight for state’s athletic soul.

  17. Cardiff Giant 04/07/2009 at 8:49 AM #

NC State is the Army of ACC basketball.

  18. choppack1 04/07/2009 at 8:51 AM #

I’m the last one to defend Fowler, but I can’t lay the blame of a lack of national championships on his feet. After all, he’s only been AD, for what 9 years?

Blaming him for the lack of national championships is kind of like blaming Obama for this recession – the conditions were very much in place at their arrival.

I do believe he is at least partially responsible for the overall dismal state of our athletic program. Then again, somehow, he’s keeping his job.

To me, this is no longer Lee’s fault. We all know what Lee does – he builds facilities and evidently he operates a respectable athletic budget. We all know what he doesn’t do.

If Lee hasn’t been run out of town – the blame lies w/ those w/ the power to make the decision…Murphy, Oblinger and our BOT who have tolerated him like a family tolerates a black sheep.

This is no longer about Lee Fowler. Just like in 1995 and 1996 – it was no longer about Les Robinson. It’s about NC State’s powerbrokers accepting pisspour results and not seeking to ruffle the feather’s of it’s stronger neighbor or embarass itself by admitting it’s trying. End of story.

  19. RickJ 04/07/2009 at 8:55 AM #

Here is another kick-in-the-nuts to look forward to – UNC loses seniors Hansbrough, Green & Frasor. Lawson & Ellington will go pro and I can hear it now – UNC is going to suck next year. Well guess what – this isn’t 2006. UNC’s roster will easily be the most talented in the ACC and still light years ahead of ours. At best, there will be 4 or 5 in the country with comparable talent. They have a great chance to win it again and again as far as the eye can see.

  20. Greywolf 04/07/2009 at 8:56 AM #

What IS all this about cutting donations to the WPC as a way to influence the BOT? Hello! I can hear them now, “Well, the fans finally woke up. They see it like we do. Sports aren’t very important at NCSU.”
    `
Wanna do something to get the BOT’s attention? Cut donations to the school, to the source of professor’s salaries. THAT, ladies and gentlemen, would get their attention.

  21. Wolfpack_1995 04/07/2009 at 9:01 AM #

    Really glad this site exists.

It exposes the true farce that NC State is sometimes.

We have been irrelevant for 20 years now except for a Sweet 16 appearance and a Gator Bowl victory.

Wonder if someone could do a metric on how much the average Wolfpack fan gets for their invested money in terms of seeing championships.

We have to be right up there with the Chicago Cubs, Detroit Lions, LA Clippers and other miserable franchises.

Why not make it 25 years of nothing and keep Lee for another 5 years?

    Numbness has set in.

NC STATE = STATE of IRRELEVANCE!

  22. Gene 04/07/2009 at 9:07 AM #

I wish the NCAA would give our athletics department the death penalty and put us out of our misery.

  23. BillyTheKid 04/07/2009 at 9:12 AM #

Greywolf, I thought you where going to stop talking?!?! If we suck at sports why not just do away with the place altogether, right?!?!?

  24. grizzlyman 04/07/2009 at 9:19 AM #

The next 2 BOT meetings are at the Angus Barn 4/15 @ 7 PM and 4/17 @ 9 AM at the Park Alumni Center on Centennial Campus. One way to get their attention would be to show up in mass and voice displeasure to them in person. Pitch forks would be optional I guess, but would add a nice touch. It shouldn’t be to hard to get the “Lunatic Fringe” together since its only a handful of people on a message board. Seriously though, almost being rid of Uncle Jed last week, seeing how abysmal the athletics department is doing in the All Sports Check In, and watching UNC win another title seems to have made very clear how bad NCSU athletics really is. Something has to give. The University needs to recommit its self to winning, or the fans need to resign themselves to losing.

Alpha: Time wounds all heels. I know that sounds HWSNBN-ish, but it’s true and now is a time to let things take their course prior to any mass protests.

  25. Alpha Wolf 04/07/2009 at 9:26 AM #

Interesting that ChrisHeel92 finds the time to wander over here, essentially to gloat.

Even in the glow of a national championship, some Heels fans want to bask in schaudenfraude.

That says more about them than even the most negative State fan’s post here.
