Maryland Game Thread/Semi-Live Blog

I enjoyed semi-live blogging the Wake game, so I’ll try to do the same tonight. I am very confident tonight, and expect a fairly comfortable (8-12 point) win. Of course, NC State is like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get. Place your thoughts, reactions, and happy/angry utterances in the comments. You can also let us know if and when it starts snowing where you are.

Keep praying for Wolfpack alum Corey Smith and the other people missing at sea.

7:39 – If FSN’s HD feed doesn’t start working soon, I’m going to start swearing. Bastards.

7:41 – HD finally here. I guess the game will have to make me say the F word. I can’t believe “Best Damn Sports Show” is still on the air. Who watches that shit?

7:52 – Maryland is aggressively pushing Javi when he handles the ball. That’s a very good strategy. We need to adjust or shift more minutes to Degand, because our half-court offense has trouble getting started. 11-7 Terps.

7:59 – I hope Tracy is ready to play 35 plus tonight.

8:04 – Apparently, we missed committing turnovers, and are back in the saddle tonight.

8:08 – OK, Degand is sucking really bad tonight. Time for Mays? Terps by 7.

8:11 – Dinnertime makes things better. Mmmmmmm…jambalaya.

8:21 – Finally, a nice run of non-shitty play. A 9-point lead goes down to 3, and it’s Wolfpack ball. Should have 2 possessions left to Maryland’s 1, if we play it intelligently.

Halftime – You have to feel great about only being down 1, given how bad we played for most of the half. Unfortunately, it looks like Costner might have checked out for good.

8:41 – What’s the deal with all the Hooters and creepy “Just for Men” hair color ads? I have to switch the channel with my kids in the room!

8:47 – Back to extreme shittiness.

8:53 – We finally score, but still look awful. Luckily, so does Maryland – and the deficit is only three.

8:57 – Dead crowd, dead team.

9:03 – McCauley asserting himself in the second half. A very welcome development. Maybe we’ll even start guarding Vasquez!

9:09 – Smith puts the Pack in front, I think for the first time all night!

9:15 – Vasquez is eviscerating us.

9:21 – I’m pretty sure that’s your ballgame. Jesus, what a shitty half of basketball we are playing.

9:24 – A late call. A shitty call. Just when it looked like we might have one last run. Damn it.

9:31 – Don’t worry, it will be football season soon enough.

Your final score – Maryland 71, NC State 60.

Jesus this looks like a Pac 10 game, setting offense back about 40 years.

Seriously, does State know that it’s not illegal to play defense??

  3. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 8:50 PM #

Rochester: A lot of our mistakes are the same mistakes over and over… it’s not limited to just turnovers.

That certainly was not a walk. At least not to Duke standards. Damn. 3 point turnover. How many of our turnovers result in a 3 point swing?

    “Costner slouches back oncourt…”

His nickname is the Big Lazy.
I have started calling my idiot dog this name.

  5. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 8:51 PM #

Costner and McCauley have made a couple of good plays together. Maybe they can pick it up…

I am old and would be a better PG than what we have.

Vasquez is going to have another30 point game.

  7. Rick 03/01/2009 at 8:53 PM #

That was the worst flop I have ever seen.

This looks like the Wake game all over. We’re behind, but can’t keep anyone from scoring. We will look great losing by five when all is said and done.

Put Johnny Thomas in and let him make Vazquez pay for coming into the lane. Just once. He’ll cut that shit out.

Hey, BTW, is Maryland still eligible for consideration?

Damnit, There’s fells running to NO WHERE and right by his man, easy two.

  11. Wulfpack 03/01/2009 at 8:54 PM #

Yea Fells is getting lit up tonight. Vasquez is a savy player and really knows how to use his screens. Our advantage is in the interior and we need to continue to try to establish it.

Our lane is the Red Carpet for Greivis

If McCauley can keep picking up fouls on the Twerps we might catch up at the line and foul some of their guys out.

In case, like me, you wondered how in the hell a shooter like that got from Venezuela to Turtle U:

t Montrose Christian: Played under head coach Stu Vetter at Montrose Christian … helped the Mustangs post a 43-5 record over his junior and senior seasons … guided the team to a 20-2 record in 2006… finished the year as the No. 9 high school in the USA Today Super 25 rankings … earned first team All-Met honors from the Washington Post … averaged 12.8 points, 7.4 rebounds, 5.9 assists, and 2.5 steals for the Mustangs … connected on 31 three-pointers and shot 76 percent from the free throw line … tallied a season-high 20 points in a 77-61 win over Mercersburg Academy … scored in double figures 14 times during his senior campaign … named to the All-Tournament Team at the Charm City Challenge after scoring 27 points in 26 minutes … as a junior Vasquez posted 12.6 points, 6.1 assists, and 5.3 rebounds per game.

Personal: Son of Ivis Rodriguez and Gregorio Vasquez … has one brother Ingerman Sanoya (30) … played in high school with Kevin Durant of the Seattle Supersonics … lists Michael Jordan as his favorite player … majoring in American studies.

Why are only trying to pass the ball to the interior, IF we had someone penetrating this thing would open up on it’s own. Either that or UM bigs would be fouling even more.

  16. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 8:59 PM #

That might have been the worst turnover of the year.

  17. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 9:00 PM #

    Lazy passes we have mastered.

  18. Rick 03/01/2009 at 9:00 PM #

Costner moves like he is chest deep in water.

  19. Rick 03/01/2009 at 9:01 PM #

I like the box and 1

  20. Rick 03/01/2009 at 9:01 PM #

    Nice hustle by Horner

  21. MrPlywood 03/01/2009 at 9:02 PM #

    Good god.

  22. Rick 03/01/2009 at 9:02 PM #

    Finally some energy

  23. Wulfpack 03/01/2009 at 9:02 PM #

The fact that we just took the lead in this game is mind boggling considering how we have played.

  24. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 9:02 PM #

Ahahah. You can hear OUR fans OOOH-ING at our passes.

YEAH TRACY SMITH! He’s our MVP for the year.

  25. redfred2 03/01/2009 at 9:02 PM #

    Where is Smith?

    OH, there.
