Maryland Game Thread/Semi-Live Blog

I enjoyed semi-live blogging the Wake game, so I’ll try to do the same tonight. I am very confident tonight, and expect a fairly comfortable (8-12 point) win. Of course, NC State is like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get. Place your thoughts, reactions, and happy/angry utterances in the comments. You can also let us know if and when it starts snowing where you are.

Keep praying for Wolfpack alum Corey Smith and the other people missing at sea.

7:39 – If FSN’s HD feed doesn’t start working soon, I’m going to start swearing. Bastards.

7:41 – HD finally here. I guess the game will have to make me say the F word. I can’t believe “Best Damn Sports Show” is still on the air. Who watches that shit?

7:52 – Maryland is aggressively pushing Javi when he handles the ball. That’s a very good strategy. We need to adjust or shift more minutes to Degand, because our half-court offense has trouble getting started. 11-7 Terps.

7:59 – I hope Tracy is ready to play 35 plus tonight.

8:04 – Apparently, we missed committing turnovers, and are back in the saddle tonight.

8:08 – OK, Degand is sucking really bad tonight. Time for Mays? Terps by 7.

8:11 – Dinnertime makes things better. Mmmmmmm…jambalaya.

8:21 – Finally, a nice run of non-shitty play. A 9-point lead goes down to 3, and it’s Wolfpack ball. Should have 2 possessions left to Maryland’s 1, if we play it intelligently.

Halftime – You have to feel great about only being down 1, given how bad we played for most of the half. Unfortunately, it looks like Costner might have checked out for good.

8:41 – What’s the deal with all the Hooters and creepy “Just for Men” hair color ads? I have to switch the channel with my kids in the room!

8:47 – Back to extreme shittiness.

8:53 – We finally score, but still look awful. Luckily, so does Maryland – and the deficit is only three.

8:57 – Dead crowd, dead team.

9:03 – McCauley asserting himself in the second half. A very welcome development. Maybe we’ll even start guarding Vasquez!

9:09 – Smith puts the Pack in front, I think for the first time all night!

9:15 – Vasquez is eviscerating us.

9:21 – I’m pretty sure that’s your ballgame. Jesus, what a shitty half of basketball we are playing.

9:24 – A late call. A shitty call. Just when it looked like we might have one last run. Damn it.

9:31 – Don’t worry, it will be football season soon enough.

Your final score – Maryland 71, NC State 60.

“Anyone else thinking about taking the trek to Atlanta?”

I thought about it. I even have a brother in law who lives there (and has two apartments above his above his garage). But I have a feeling it would be a short trip for NCSU.

for both football and basketball, the next two respective seasons will show how “on the cusp of doing something special” we really are.

I am really disappointed in COSTNER- it’s like he doesn’t care-please get out of this funk man please!!!!!!!!!!!

We are fortunate to be down just 1. Our defense has been bad, and we haven’t valued the ball. Bad first half for Javi and Degand. We’ve got to find Smith down low, let him dominate, then kick it out for open threes when the Terps collapse.

Shore up the careless TOs, find Vasquez and Neal, and we can win this one and stay in NIT contention.

Atlanta is a pretty fun town in case we lose early. I’m just waiting to see when disaster sets in. If we play well in these last games, I can get motivated with the slightest hope the trip won’t be a total waste. Truthfully, as a lifelong State fan I’ve learned how to hold on to the slightest bit of hope.

    Lloyd, clearly a Pack fan:

Lloyd: What are the chances of a guy like you and a girl like me… ending up together?
Mary: Well, that’s pretty difficult to say.
Lloyd: Hit me with it! I’ve come a long way to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
    Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Mary: I’d say more like one out of a million.
    [pause]
Lloyd: So you’re telling me there’s a chance.

We should have one play in the 2nd half – get it to Tracy inside. Once they figure out how to stop him, then we can go to play #2. Of course, we have to be able to get the ball to him without turning it over first.

As a State alum I take a little pride in the Dennis-Miller-look-alike commercials. They’re much better than anything we’ve dispersed before.

  8. Wulfpack 03/01/2009 at 8:36 PM #

Smith HAS to finish those! Come on!

  9. Rick 03/01/2009 at 8:37 PM #

Costner is sitting. Something is wrong with him, mentally.

He did not even look like he cared.

  10. Wulfpack 03/01/2009 at 8:38 PM #

Costner is a gonner after this year…you can just tell.

  11. 1.21 Jigawatts 03/01/2009 at 8:39 PM #

That was crap. The refs haven’t called over the back all night and NOW they call it on Smith. Here we go again with the bipolar ACC refs.

  12. Rick 03/01/2009 at 8:39 PM #

“Costner is a gonner after this year…you can just tell.”

That is exactly what I thought.

  13. Wulfpack 03/01/2009 at 8:40 PM #

Javi is having an awful game. Come on, kid.

  14. Rick 03/01/2009 at 8:41 PM #

What is Courtney doing? He is really bad.

  15. SaccoV 03/01/2009 at 8:41 PM #

Wow, this game is quickly turning into a super snoozer. I hate to say that I’m disinterested.

  16. redfred2 03/01/2009 at 8:41 PM #

What the hell is up with Javi? Is Lowe throttling him too hard? He needs to be moving, going into no man’s land, and making things happen, TO’s or not.

  17. Rick 03/01/2009 at 8:42 PM #

It looks like all three seniors are mailing it in.

IMO we should just bench them and play for next year.

  18. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 8:42 PM #

Ahahahaha. “Check the backboard… there should be a dent from that one.” That sounded like a Major League quote from Bob Ueker.

  19. Wulfpack 03/01/2009 at 8:43 PM #

I think it’s time Sid play Mays. We haven’t seen him in about 6 games, and he can’t possibly be worse than Javi and Degand at this stage. Give the kid a chance when the guys in front of him aren’t getting it done, maybe he can give us a spark.

  20. Rochester 03/01/2009 at 8:43 PM #

A lot of our turnovers are the same turnover, over and over. We’re trying the soft little bounce pass into the post and it’s getting picked off, easily, every time. Learn from your mistakes, come on.

  21. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 8:45 PM #

Jebus. We cannot tie the game.

  22. Dogbreath 03/01/2009 at 8:46 PM #

Hey guys, in cased you missed the first sixty-right times its been mentioned tonight, but Maryland is playing this game for an at large bid.

  23. MrPlywood 03/01/2009 at 8:48 PM #

    Ugh. NO energy.

Agreed Rochester. I could pick off those passes. They are telegraphed.

  24. 1.21 Jigawatts 03/01/2009 at 8:48 PM #

I’m guessing the players went on spring break with the students. At least I’m hoping that’s why they are playing worse then camel dung.
