Maryland Game Thread/Semi-Live Blog

I enjoyed semi-live blogging the Wake game, so I’ll try to do the same tonight. I am very confident tonight, and expect a fairly comfortable (8-12 point) win. Of course, NC State is like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get. Place your thoughts, reactions, and happy/angry utterances in the comments. You can also let us know if and when it starts snowing where you are.

Keep praying for Wolfpack alum Corey Smith and the other people missing at sea.

7:39 – If FSN’s HD feed doesn’t start working soon, I’m going to start swearing. Bastards.

7:41 – HD finally here. I guess the game will have to make me say the F word. I can’t believe “Best Damn Sports Show” is still on the air. Who watches that shit?

7:52 – Maryland is aggressively pushing Javi when he handles the ball. That’s a very good strategy. We need to adjust or shift more minutes to Degand, because our half-court offense has trouble getting started. 11-7 Terps.

7:59 – I hope Tracy is ready to play 35 plus tonight.

8:04 – Apparently, we missed committing turnovers, and are back in the saddle tonight.

8:08 – OK, Degand is sucking really bad tonight. Time for Mays? Terps by 7.

8:11 – Dinnertime makes things better. Mmmmmmm…jambalaya.

8:21 – Finally, a nice run of non-shitty play. A 9-point lead goes down to 3, and it’s Wolfpack ball. Should have 2 possessions left to Maryland’s 1, if we play it intelligently.

Halftime – You have to feel great about only being down 1, given how bad we played for most of the half. Unfortunately, it looks like Costner might have checked out for good.

8:41 – What’s the deal with all the Hooters and creepy “Just for Men” hair color ads? I have to switch the channel with my kids in the room!

8:47 – Back to extreme shittiness.

8:53 – We finally score, but still look awful. Luckily, so does Maryland – and the deficit is only three.

8:57 – Dead crowd, dead team.

9:03 – McCauley asserting himself in the second half. A very welcome development. Maybe we’ll even start guarding Vasquez!

9:09 – Smith puts the Pack in front, I think for the first time all night!

9:15 – Vasquez is eviscerating us.

9:21 – I’m pretty sure that’s your ballgame. Jesus, what a shitty half of basketball we are playing.

9:24 – A late call. A shitty call. Just when it looked like we might have one last run. Damn it.

9:31 – Don’t worry, it will be football season soon enough.

Your final score – Maryland 71, NC State 60.

Vaquez is htting. We will struggle to win this one.

    Smith is really impressing.

  2. Rick 03/01/2009 at 7:58 PM #

7 TOs in 11 min. We will be over 25 at this rate.

  3. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 7:59 PM #

Please take Dagand out. He’s killing us. Killing us.

  4. Rick 03/01/2009 at 8:00 PM #

What is Degand doing? He is really clueless. How much worse can Mays be?

As bad as we are playing we are only down 4.

“Please take Dagand out. He’s killing us. Killing us.”

He turns it over and then heaves a 25 ft shot. He is awful. What happened, he really looked to be turning a corner.

Degand is a one man wrecking crew. He stands at the top of the key and either turns the ball over or drives to nowhere or jacks a hapless three. He has not initiated an offense yet.

I agree with Bomani Jones—all props to Farnold Degand for mind-tricking TWO D-1 programs to give him schollies!
    Unreal…

“As bad as we’re playing we’re only down by 4”. This is exactly what I was talking about above. We RARELY take advantage of opportunity it seems. The Snappers are all but giving us a chance to take control of this game.

While I do not disagree the same (if not worse) can be said about Md.

How many wide open threes are we going to give Vasquez? How many does he have to hit before we bother to guard it?

  11. Rick 03/01/2009 at 8:08 PM #

I blame Javi for Fells turnover.
Anyone with a brain knows you do not give it to Fells when he has to make an actual decision.

  12. Rick 03/01/2009 at 8:09 PM #

    For the love of…
Fells throws at behind his head. Then Costner has to top that by throwing it all the way out of bounds.

Has the team in WHITE ever met before tonight because they look like a pick-up team. Don’t know who to throw it too, don’t know who to guard.

Tracy Smith is all by himself reason for us to be optimistic for the future of NC State basketball.

  15. DT44 03/01/2009 at 8:14 PM #

Did we have a scouting report on Neal?? Evidently not, he’s wiiide open again.

  16. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 8:15 PM #

That was actually GREAT transition D on the long rebound run from Maryland.

  17. Rick 03/01/2009 at 8:15 PM #

“Tracy Smith is all by himself reason for us to be optimistic for the future of NC State basketball.”

Best big man we have had in a while. I am just glad we played him with the seniors so the “green monster:” would not rear its ugly head.

  18. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 8:16 PM #

We don’t have enough guys who can play D well enough to cover them all regardless of a scouting report might say. Just look back to the Wake game for further evidence. There’s a reason we’re seeing a trend.

So Daily Update is trying to coax me into going to Atlanta. If we can win this game and don’t crap the bed in the last two, I think I will. We’ve got enough x-factor to wreck a bracket.

Decent finish to take some momentum back going into the half.

  20. DT44 03/01/2009 at 8:19 PM #

    Nice ending run.

  21. Rick 03/01/2009 at 8:19 PM #

Given how many turnovers we had 1 point is not too bad.

  22. GAWolf 03/01/2009 at 8:21 PM #

Anyone else thinking about taking the trek to Atlanta?

  23. turfpack 03/01/2009 at 8:21 PM #

Played like shit only down 1 at the half-I”ll take it every time…

  24. redfred2 03/01/2009 at 8:22 PM #

Except for Smith’s offense, it can’t look more disjointed or get much sloppier than that.

LET’S HOPE that is a GOOD omen.

    Oh yeah, GOOOOOOOOO WOOOOOOLFPACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
