While i think Haith is a good coach, is he really in a class that should be above names like Wright and Calipari? Don’t understand why they would not be above him on the wish list, at least to contact first should Barnes not come.

The names that have been tossed around are names that I think would bring some much needed energy to the program. Even though there is energy at this point due to the change of scenery, I don’t know that Haith will sustain that, at least until he delivered some really positive results on the court.

  2. BJD95 04/04/2006 at 11:02 AM #

From what I’ve heard, Haith is in 4th or 5th position. Think he very well may be the “fallback” candidate, but not the #2.

  3. Jim 04/04/2006 at 11:10 AM #

It is likely that Haith’s raised profile is due to him being a conduit to Barnes at this time.

    Good point, Jim.

BTW, longhornnation.com has its list of reasons why Barnes will not leave Texas for NC State. It’s pretty stupid. Barnes very well MAY stay in Texas, but it won’t be because “Texas … is the class of the Big 12 [but] NC State is not even close to the class of the ACC” or that Texas has a nice practice facility.

They’d have made a better argument by referring to a post further down noting that Elisha Cuthbert is from Texas. Yowza.

I just read at this link that Barnes says he’s staying and has gotten a raise.

  6. Clarksa 04/04/2006 at 11:38 AM #

That link says nothing different than what we have already heard….

  7. PackPride83 04/04/2006 at 11:39 AM #

Boy… you scored pretty low on reading comprehension tests I bet.

  8. Chemba 04/04/2006 at 11:39 AM #

Booman, where in that article does it say that Barnes is “staying and has gotten a raise”? I missed it. I did read that the AD is working on getting him a raise and that NCSU has not officially contacted him.

  9. yannes 04/04/2006 at 11:39 AM #

    booman_Group:
Yeah, that article came out this morning. But it doesn’t say anywhere that BARNES says that he isn’t leaving. He is getting a raise and his AD wants to keep him there, but Barnes personally says that he hasn’t been contacted, yet.

this is what we expected! we knew texas was going to offer more money, but still barnes only said he likes texas and never once said I don’t want to coach at State! Until this happens all things are still open. Both schools are just throwing money at him and he still hasn’t made a final choice! We need to get him here for the visit quickly!!!

Shouldn’t someone be sending the Barnes clan a basket of NC goodies: Some Boj, some bbq, some blue ridge apples, some Outer Banks seafood, some “UNC people think they’re better than you” quotes, some pictures of wild ponies… something even the cowboys of Texas probably don’t have, some clips of V looking for someone to hug, some Hickory furniture, some good clean oil-less sand, some invitations to a quality Carter-Finley tailgate, a Pinehurst cap (or membership if any of y’all can “swing” it)….

Get off the interweb and get to work guys…

I’m hearing that Haith is in the mix. Interesting…

Maybe jb could verify via BC, if he is still in Miami.

Like the majority here I like the idea of the big three (RB, JW & JC) as our first choice but don’t dismiss Haith. Everyone that knows him likes him and he is supposedly one of the best recruiters around, which is significant IMHO.

I just thought this was funny, from an AP article on espn.com:

“Barnes said he has not received a job offer from North Carolina State.

‘I haven’t talked to anybody from North Carolina State,’ he said.”

Reminds me of a fake documentary, or someone just trying to pad the article with more words. You would think that they could leave one or the other line out of the article whole-sale.

He is not still in Miami.

I also heard Glenn and just wanted to clarify something that he said. He indicated that the 3 coaches that he could “confirm” have been contacted through back channels were Barnes, Montgomery and Haith. He went on to say that he was “sure” that others had been contacted but those were the only 3 names he could confirm. I’d say there is a pretty good chance that Wright is included in the folks who have been contacted but DG can’t confirm it (pure speculation on my part). Personally, I’d be much more enthusiastic about Haith as a fallback when compared to Odom or Larrangia (sp?).

Just an FYI – troll comments from handles obscenely derogating a potential coaching candidate will be deleted post haste. Don’t waste your time.

  18. Alpha Wolf 04/04/2006 at 12:35 PM #

People are saying on PP that Barnes officially turned it down.

  19. Alpha Wolf 04/04/2006 at 12:36 PM #

^ forgot to add that that is per 1090.

  20. BJD95 04/04/2006 at 12:46 PM #

The 1090 rumor is not confirmed. According to our information, 1090 am is not well-informed in general regarding this process.

I am a crazy statefan, from NC, went to NCSU, go back for games all the time…I also went to UT for grad school and lived in Austin during this time. Austin is a better city to live in with better quality of life. Unlike Raleigh, Austin loves the University. ALL sports at UT are important to Texas fans. Yes, it is dominated by football, but where else are there packed stands for women’s bball games, track meets, and volleyball games as well? Not in NC. No matter WHAT happens UT fans always support their team and are behind their coach. They don’t leave games early. I have never heard nothing but words of encouragement of support from fans.

One of the saddest moments in my NCSU bball viewing history was when Herb was BOOed by his own school. I have never been so embarassed. I don’t care how much the team is sucking….Texas fans would never do that.

Bottom line. I love NC State and I think that Rick Barnes would be a great fit for our school, but I don’t think we can top the $+Assured Fan Support that he has at Texas. If Barnes comes to NCSU and doesn’t have a winning season one year or fails to make the tourney he will be hanging on by a thread for his job and will be the butt end of many jokes.

I hope he takes the offer (that I hope we make) but my eggs aren’t all in that basket.

  22. Clarksa 04/04/2006 at 12:58 PM #

They are probably going off the Statesmen article…The Wolfpacker has a thread pinned saying “Barnes gets a raise” and it points to the article…

    Several thoughts:

    1) We can’t hire Odom. That would be a huge disappointment. I definitely agree that Haith would be better than Odom. Why start with a guy who has already failed on this stage? This whole thing for me is about hope. For the first time in 6 or 7 years I have some hope that our program is on the rise. Bringing in Odom would completely domolish that feeling for me.

    2) While Haith might wind up here and might do a fine job, I can’t help but cringe at ’74’s statement above. Anyone remember back to Herb’s hire and why he was hired? Two primary reasons: everyone likes him and he is a great recruiter.

    4) We just have to stay on the big 3 until all hope is lost. Then we can address who of the up-and-comers we want. Question: how much does the offer decrease if we’re forced to look second-tier?

And, apparently, Texas fans are not generally well-informed regarding Elisha Cuthbert who is, as I thought, Canadian:
